28 premature babies transferred to Egypt from Gaza

Twenty-eight premature babies have been transferred to Egypt from the Gaza Strip to be taken to hospitals in Cairo and North Sinai.

Al-Qahera News television reported that the Palestinian Red Crescent said ambulances departed on Monday from Gaza’s Emirati Hospital carrying 28 premature infants to the Rafah crossing.

Minister of Health Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar oversaw the process in footage on Al-Qahera News that showed each baby transferred into an incubator, and then into an Egyptian ambulance.

Earlier, 31 premature infants were taken from the besieged al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza and to the Emirati hospital in the southern part of the enclave, after two babies died before the evacuation.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), doctors in Gaza said all the babies are fighting serious infections due to a lack of medical supplies and several were in critical condition.

None of the infants were accompanied by relatives, as the Palestinian Ministry of Health could not find close family members, WHO added.

  • SAD! How nurse killed seven newborn babies at UK hospital

SAD! How nurse killed seven newborn babies at UK hospital

A British nurse, Lucy Letby, was on Friday, August 18, 2023, found guilty of murdering seven newborn babies and trying to murder six others at the hospital neonatal unit where she worked, becoming the UK’s most prolific killer of children.

Letby, 33 – on trial since last October – was accused of injecting her young victims, who were either sick or born prematurely, with air, overfeeding them milk and poisoning them with insulin.

The jury at Manchester Crown Court in northern England reached all of its verdicts after deliberating for 22 days.

Letby was arrested following a string of baby deaths at the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England between June 2015 and June 2016.

Described by the prosecution as a “calculating” woman who used methods of killing that “didn’t leave much of a trace”, Letby had repeatedly denied harming the children.

“Lucy Letby was entrusted to protect some of the most vulnerable babies. Little did those working alongside her know that there was a murderer in their midst,” Senior Crown Prosecutor, Pascale Jones, said in a statement.

“Time and again, she harmed babies, in an environment which should have been safe for them and their families,” the prosecutor added, calling the killings “a complete betrayal of the trust placed in her”.

The court heard that colleagues raised concerns after noticing that Letby was on shift when each of the babies collapsed, with some of the newborns attacked just as their parents left their cots.

Prosecutor Nick Johnson said Letby “gaslighted” her colleagues into believing the string of deaths were “just a run of bad luck”.

According to AFP, Letby’s final victims were two triplet boys, referred to in court as babies O and P.

Child O died shortly after the nurse returned from a holiday in Ibiza in June 2016, while child P died a day after their sibling.

Letby was also said to have attempted to kill the third triplet, child Q, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the charge.

Johnson said that by that time Letby was “completely out of control”, adding that “she was in effect playing God”.

Letby was arrested and released twice. On her third arrest in 2020 she was formally charged and held in custody.

During searches at her home, police found hospital paperwork and a handwritten note on which Letby had written: “I am evil, I did this.”

The nurse later tried to explain the note by saying she wrote it after being placed on clerical duties following the death of the two triplets.

She said that decision to remove her from medical duties had left her feeling like she had “done something wrong”.

Barrister Ben Myers, defending Letby, told the court she was “hardworking, deeply committed” and “loved her work”.

He pointed to the fragile health of the babies, many of whom were born prematurely, and said the neonatal unit was overstretched and understaffed.

Letby also suggested that a “gang” of four senior doctors pinned blame on her to cover for the hospital’s failings.

When Letby took the stand at her trial, she insisted she “always wanted to work with children” and said it was “devastating” to find out she was blamed for the deaths.

The case revived memories of two of Britain’s infamous medical murderers, doctor Harold Shipman and nurse Beverley Allitt.

Shipman, a general practitioner, hanged himself in prison in 2004, four years after being convicted of killing 15 of his patients.

A later public inquiry concluded he killed about 250 patients with lethal morphine injections between 1971 and 1998.

Allitt – a nurse dubbed the “angel of death” – was jailed for life in 1993 after being convicted of murdering four young children in her care, attempting to murder three others and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to six more.

Angry mob nab Fake mentally retarded man with sack filled with dead babies

An angry mob has apprehended a yet-to-be-identified young man pretending to be mentally retarded with a sack filled with dead babies in Lagos.

On Sunday, the fake mentally retarded man was caught along the Cele Expressway, Lagos by onlookers who noticed his bag dripping with blood.

When questioned, he was said to have given flimsy reasons before making a run for it and diving into the lake to escape capture.

According to an eyewitness, he was captured and handed over to the police after being tortured by the mob.

“We noticed his sack was dripping blood and we enjoined some street urchins to help us query the man further. He quickly ran into a lake but he was caught. We opened the sack and saw fresh dead babies.

When we interrogated him on what he was doing with the gory items, he refused to answer but noted that he killed the mother of the babies. We handed him over to the police for fear of him being lynched,” an eyewitness stated.

Meanwhile, operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT on Monday rescued 10 crew members of a capsized fishing trawler within Lagos channel.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the vessel christened OLOKUM XII was said to have capsized in the early hours of November 7 while it was being towed by another fishing trawler.

According to a statement on Monday night by Western Naval Command’s (WNC) Information Officer, Commander Edward Yeibo, the fishing trawler collided with a Merchant Vessel, MSC CORUNA, which led to its capsize.

“Fortunately, NNS BEECROFT patrol team was on routine patrol which led to the prompt rescue of 10 crew members from the trawler. Thereafter, the rescued crew were handed over to the officials of the company, named Barnaly Fishing Company Limited,” he said.

Yeibo said the Commander, NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Malami Haruna, commiserated with the fishing company over the “sad incident”, adding that he urged sea-farers to navigate with caution and due consideration to the international regulation for prevention of collision when transiting within the nation’s maritime domain.

  • Babies conceived by women above 35 years stand the risk of Down syndrome – Therapist

Babies conceived by women above 35 years stand the risk of Down syndrome – Therapist

Women who conceive pregnancies after the age of 35 years stand the risk of being delivered of babies with Down syndrome, a speech therapist, Maryam Ibrahim-Maifada, has said.

“The older the mother, the higher the risk of having a baby with Down syndrome,’’ Ibrahim-Maifada told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Friday.

“Down syndrome is a genetic disorder. Most babies are born with 23 pairs of chromosomes within each cell for a total of 46. Majority of babies with Down syndrome are born with an extra chromosome,’’ she said.

She noted that babies born with Down syndrome faced physical and mental challenges throughout life.

They typically have distinctive body and facial features that set them apart. They are more likely to develop slowly, and are more at risk of some medical conditions, she said.

Ibrahim-Maifada listed some of the medical conditions as delays in speech and language development, attention problems, sleep difficulties, stubbornness and tantrums, delays in recognition, and delayed toilet training.

She also listed physical signs of Down syndrome to include short, stocky physical size; with a short neck, poor muscle tone, flattened facial features, especially the bridge of the nose, and small ears.

Others are almond-shaped eyes that slant upward, small hands and feet, single deep crease across the center of the palm.

She listed other medical conditions associated with Down syndrome to include heart problems, thyroid abnormalities, auditory and vision problems and low fertility rate males.

“About 50 per cent of women with Down syndrome are able to bear children. The possibility of risk of their children having the condition is between 35 per cent and 50 per cent,’’ Ibrahim-Maifada.

10 newborn babies die in Indian hospital fire

Ten newborn babies died on Saturday in a fire at a state-run hospital in western India, officials said.

There were 17 infants in the unit for sick newborn babies when the fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday at the Bhandara District General Hospital in Maharashtra state.

Seven infants died due to smoke suffocation, and three from burn injuries, Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope told reporters.

Seven babies were rescued by the nurses and ward staff.

All the infants were aged between a few days and three months, Bhandara district health official Prashant Uike said.

The government has ordered a probe into the incident and a safety audit of all neo-natal care units in the state.

Initial reports indicated that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit in one of the incubators, Tope said.

“The staff said the ward quickly filled with lots of black smoke,” the minister added.

Legal requirements for a post-mortem had been waived and the bodies of the children handed to their families, Tope added.

Families of the victims would be given compensation of 500,000 rupees (about 6,814 dollars) each.

  • Pst. Adeboye: God told me only those whose time had come will die of Coronavirus [Video]

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), on Sunday said God revealed to him that only those whose time have come will be killed by Covid-19, he added that great things will come out of the lockdown imposed due to the deadly coronavirus.

Adeboye in a sermon during a live broadcast to his members on Sunday, predicted that many babies will be birthed in early 2021.

The cleric, who informed Christians to rejoice during the lockdown, identified David and Elijah and Joseph in the Bible, as persons who became great as a result of lockdown in their lives.

He said, “let me warn pastors, now I’m busy you are resting. Early next year you will be very busy.

“As a result of the lockdown you will have a lot of baby naming ceremonies.

“David, Elijah, Joseph, and some others became great during a lockdown.”

He, therefore, added that the best thing to do during a lockdown is rejoice, praise God, study the Bible and pray.

“Visions usually come during lockdown. Plan towards actualizing the vision and when you finish planing you need to hand it over to God.”

He also said God told him not to worry about persons who died due to coronavirus.

According to him, God allowed it because he wants to prove that he is the Almighty, hence the low COVID-19 deaths recorded globally.

The cleric said, “God said I should not worry about those who will die due to coronavirus.

“Ain’t you amazed at the number of people who have been recovered compared to the number of those who died? All over the world the number of those who died is less than 10 percent.

“If you research, you will know that the number of people who have died due to coronavirus is lesser than those who have died because of accident or other means.

“This is because God just wanted to prove himself that he is the almighty that he can lockdown the whole world.

“I’m appealing to those who haven’t give their life to Christ love your self by seeking him.If you find him you will fine life and if you hate him.

“To those who think they are big and mighty where is it now. The almighty God says sit down at home.”

  • Woman dies hours after giving birth to five babies

Woman dies hours after giving birth to five babies

Emmanuel Ezunu, Head, Clinical Services and Training, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, has confirmed the death of a housewife who died 15 hours after she was delivered of a set of quintuplet.

Mr Ezunu who made the confirmation to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Asaba, said Chukwunonso Onyejekwe, 29, died of complications after delivery.

According to him, the deceased suffered acute respiratory failure and died after a successful Cesarean Session (CS) delivery.

NAN gathered that late Mrs Onyejekwe was delivered of a set of five female babies.

Mr Ezumu said that the woman was brought into the hospital as an un-booked patient, and due to her emergency condition, she was taken straight to the theatre.

The woman in question was brought to the FMC, on the 28th of January 2019, un-booked; that is to say, she was not a registered patient here.

Also, when she came, we noticed that her blood pressure was so high and the condition put her in a high risk for a normal delivery.

So, we recommended a caesarean session for safe delivery and she was moved to the theatre for an emergency CS,” he said.

According to the medical officer, the woman never knew she was carrying a set of five babies.

He said late Mrs Onyejekwe told the hospital that the last scan she had revealed she was carrying a set of triplet.

Mr Ezunu said that doctors in the hospital successfully delivered the woman of a set of quintuplet at about 9 p.m. same day.

We delivered the woman of a set of quintuplet, but moments after the delivery she developed respiratory failure.

We had to rush her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where doctors and nurses battled unsuccessfully to stabilise her deteriorating condition.

Unfortunately, the woman gave up at about noon the next day,” he narrated.

Also speaking, Oyefara Babatunde, the Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the hospital, corroborated Mr Ezunu’s position on the unfortunate incident.

Mr Babatunde, whose department handled the emergency delivery, disclosed that the babies were 31 weeks old upon delivery.

He said after the delivery the woman twice suffered cardiac arrest in a space of thirty minutes while at the ICU.

After delivery, the woman developed a respiratory problem known as Pulmonary Throb Embolism (PTE).

It is a complication that has to do with difficulty in breathing. We tried to stabilise her and while we were battling with that she fell into cardiac arrest.

We were able to resuscitate her but moments later she fell into a second cardiac arrest. The complications were multiple; they were also occasioned by her high-risk quintuplet pregnancy.

Pulmonary Throb Embolism is a condition of abnormal blood clot formed in the lower limbs and released massively into the lungs.

It is so unfortunate that the woman died because after the successful delivery of five babies, the whole hospital was jubilating.

But our joy and jubilation was turned into sadness and cries. It is really a sad incident.

However, the five babies are currently under intensive care at the hospital and I can inform you that they are doing fine, “he said. (NAN)
