  • Eight-month-old baby found dead inside drum of water

An eight-month-old baby simply identified as Abdulaziz, was on Thursday found dead inside a four-feet drum of water in Benin.

The incident occurred early Thursday morning at number 53 Obakhavbaye Street, Benin City.

It was gathered that mother of the baby had gone to urinate outside at about 6 a.m, but did not find the baby where she kept him.

After three hours of searching around the house, the baby was eventually found inside the drum of water dead.

Landlord of the house, Mr Ali Abubakar, said he was observing his prayers when he heard shouting and wailing.

Ali said he went downstairs and was told that Abdulaziz died inside a drum of water.

“It is difficult for that baby to open that drum and enter inside. We don’t know what happened yet but it is a mystery’’ Abubakar said.

A neighbour, who gave her name as Blessing Akpo, said that it was only God that could unravel the baby’s killers.

“I have never seen where a baby of eight months old will open a drum of water, enter inside and close it,’’ she said.

Mother of the baby could not talk as she was still in shock.

Some policemen from Aideyan Police station were also observed at the residence to investigate the incident.

When contacted, DSP Chidi Nwanbuzour, the Command’s PPRO said that he had just been briefed about the case.

He added that the command was already investigating the circumstances leading to the death of the boy.

  • NGO bemoans plight of babies born in prisons

An NGO, Citizens United for the Rehabilitation of Errant (CURE-Nigeria), has bemoaned the plight of babies whose mothers are serving jail terms in various prisons across the federation.

The Executive Director of CURE-Nigeria, Mr Sylvester Uhaa said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Thursday, that it was sad such children reside in prisons bereft of facilities and services to meet their peculiar needs.

According to him, mothers of such children should be given parole, community service, suspended sentences and probation instead of allowing them to nurse their children in prison.

Uhaa urged the Federal Government to consider those alternatives to replace confinement of errant pregnant women and nursing mothers to the prisons.

The executive director said such mothers constitute a special group to whom incarceration should only be a last resort.

“Some of these children were either born in prison or accompanied their mothers to prison.

“Our survey revealed that the needs of these children are ignored, as the babies lack feeding, access to immunisation, blankets as well as recreational and educational facilities.

“Their mothers, on the other hand, lack access to sanitary pads, nutrition, rehabilitation programmes, legal aid and the psychological support they need,’’ he said.

Parent catches babysitter raping one-year-old daughter

Father of a one-year-old girl caught a babysitter who didn’t know her parents were going to return early from a visit to a food store molesting her.

Jayson Newlun from Missouri had been babysitting the girl on the night of June 29th and thought he was alone when the child’s parents left to get some food.

Metro Uk report says the girl’s mother forgot something and had to return home to pick it up and noticed that the babysitter, Newlun, was not on the couch anymore and their daughter’s bedroom door was open

She allegedly saw Newlun taking inappropriate photos of her child before touching her genitals while inappropriately touching himself when she walked into her room.

According to court documents, Newlun screamed before he was reportedly punched several times by the girl’s father and hit with a dresser drawer.

A neighbour had to step in to stop the father continuing the attack on Newlun.

Family members said 26-year-old was a family friend of the child’s parents and that they were only gone for five to ten minutes.

  • Tragic! Court sentences eight-week-old baby to death

European Human Rights Court has given its verdict on a case of human rights that will compel a couple to allow their sick baby to die.

The parents of the baby Chris Gard and Connie Yates have been in a long legal battle to save their baby who is suffering from a serious genetic illness.

The baby is currently on life support while treatment options were being considered.

At 8 weeks old, Charlie was diagnosed with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome and is considered to be only one of 16 babies worldwide with this disease.

His condition is progressive and currently incurable and eventually fatal.

Meanwhile, doctors are developing treatments for the various mitochondrial conditions, including the nucleoside treatment Charlie’s parents have been fighting for.

Charlie’s parents prayed the court to determine if they, as parents, have the right to continue to provide medical treatments for their son or if he should be allowed to die

The parents of the 10-months old baby want the court to let them use a potentially life-saving drug from the U.S. on their son.

They believed that the drug (which is still experimental), would help their son’s genetic condition rather than allow him to die as doctors have recommended.

However, a June 27 ruling of the court held that the application by the parents was ‘inadmissible’.

The court said that the baby was being exposed to continued pain, suffering and distress in pursuit of treatments that were unsure.

It added that any additional treatment would continue to cause harm to the baby stressing that its ruling is “Final”.

“The EHRC also removed the interim measure to keep Charlie’s life support in place.

A spokesman for Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie has been treated since October, has told the parents that there is “no rush” to remove Charlie’s life support.

The spokesman said that any future treatment will involve careful planning and discussion.”

The hospital has said that though there is a deadline in place for Charlie, they wouldn’t have to follow it exactly. The discussion and planning will take some days to work out.

Meanwhile, Charlie’s parents have so far raised over £1.3 million through a GoFundMe account for his treatment.

With the ruling of the court, the parents are unsure what they want to do with the money.

They plan to donate some to the U.S. hospital willing to treat Charlie, while the rest will be put into a charity for other children with similar mitochondrial conditions “so that nobody else ever has to go through what we have.”

She said, “We’d like to save other babies and children because these medications have been proven to work and we honestly have so much belief in them.”

Panic as 7 day-old-baby, WASSCE results burn in fire accidents

There was pandemonium at the Makoko and Satellite Town areas of Lagos State as a seven-day-old baby was killed, while copies of West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, results were burnt after fire broke out.

TheNewsGuru.com learnt that the baby was burnt to death in Makoko after the fire started around 6pm.

It was gathered that a resident was cooking on a stove, but later left it unattended to.

A firefighter said, “We gathered that a woman was cooking food; she left the place and forgot it.

“The fire started from there and razed a lot of makeshift structures to the ground.

“In the confusion that greeted the incident, the parents of the child left him inside the house. By the time they remembered that he was in the house and tried to rescue him, it was too late. The child had been burnt to death. He was supposed to be named on Sunday.

“Four fire trucks from the Lagos State Fire Service responded to a distress call from the area and put out the fire in the early hours of Sunday.”

According to a report by The Punch, in the second fire incident an electric spark from a cable triggered the fire, which damaged 32 flats.

Investigations revealed that the house used to be a school, known as Stepping Stone Comprehensive Girls College.

A firefighter, who was at the scene, said while a woman was injured, copies of burnt WASSCE results were found in the building.

He said, “The place used to be a school. It was converted to 32 apartments. A woman was injured, while WASSCE results of many former students were burnt. We cannot tell the number of results, but they were many.

“Also, 11 gas cylinders were burnt, with seven air conditioners. About 20 families were affected. It was the state fire service that initially responded before the Federal Fire Service was also called. The fire was put out around 12.25am on Sunday.”

The spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency, South West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, said the agency’s zonal Coordinator, Alhaji Suleiman Yakubu, advised the owner of the complex to gather the mutilated certificates and report the incident to WASSCE for issuance of Certified True Copies of the affected certificates.

Farinloye, who said he could not explain why the certificates were still in the building after the conversion of the building to residential flats, said investigations were ongoing.
