Multiple deaths in Badagry not due to poisonous rice – Official

Dr Dorcas Oladunjoye,  Medical Officer of Health, Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State,  says   suspected cholera outbreak in Zongo community, an Hausa/Fulani settlement in Badagry is behind deaths in the area.

Oladunjoye made the clarification in an interview with newsmen in Badagry on Thursday.

Recall that the Badagry area was in panic over multiple deaths that  was attributed to alleged consumption of poisonous rice seized from smugglers and sold by  Customs.

The Seme Area  Customs Command on Sunday, dismissed the allegation of releasing poisoned rice seized from smugglers, which had reportedly resulted in the  multiple deaths in the town.

The spokesman for the command, CSC Isah Sulaiman, denied the allegation in a statement in Seme, Lagos.

Oladunjoye said that a case of suspected cholera outbreak was discovered in one healthcare centre in Ajara, Badagry, two weeks ago, when a patient was brought from a community in Seme, stooling and vomiting.

“We swung into action, when it was further confirmed that they had been experiencing the sickness for many days which resulted in many deaths in the area.

“It was even the patient that made us to know that people had  been stooling and vomiting in that community for some days.

“We went into the community with some of our staff and took permission from their leader  (Seriki) to investigate the problems.

“We discovered that many of the residents are suffering from the suspected disease, we contacted  the Lagos state Ministry of Health and relevant agencies.

“We are aware of a suspected cholera outbreak in Zongo community. There is absolutely no evidence of poisonous rice being the cause of the deaths,” she said.

Oladunjoye said that teams from the Lagos state ministry of health, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Primary Health Care Board, and Health District V had visited the affected community.

She said that food and water samples had been collected and sent for laboratory analysis but results are still pending.

According to her, Zongo community’s living conditions are alarmingly unsanitary, and their primary sources of water are contaminated.

Also speaking, Mr Sao Temitope, a Medical Health Laboratory Officer with Badagry-West LCDA, said he personally observed the same symptoms in the victims.

“There’s no doubt that we’re dealing with something waterborne, possibly cholera. The community is severely dirty. Safe water is nonexistent. This is a clear public health crisis,” he said.

Temitope confirmed that the council chairman, Joseph Gbenu had  already initiated a rapid response.

“Plans are underway to launch a full-scale public health sensitisation campaign across the community.

“Health educators will teach residents how to purify their water, practice better sanitation, and avoid food contamination,” he said.

Recall  that on May 6, the Oglogbo Community Development Association (CDA) issued a public warning, citing a sudden spike in deaths within five days.

The notice, signed by its chairman, Mr Timothy Semasa, urged residents, particularly food vendors  to act fast by boiling water, keeping their surroundings clean, and observing basic hygiene protocols.

“The three ladies decided to follow her because she promised to give them good job and good salary.

“She called her husband,  who is a citizen of Benin Republic ,and they arranged how to transport the three ladies and the child to Burkina Faso.

“The traveling expenses and feeding for the 6 persons were paid by the couple,” he said.

The controller said that the victims would be handed over to National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to help reunite them with their families.

NAFDAC dismantles illegal alcohol factory in Badagry

In a bid to rid the country of fake and substandard products, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has dismantled an illegal alcohol factory in Badagry.

The agency, in a statement on Sunday in Lagos, by Mr Sayo Akintola, NAFDAC Resident Media Consultant, said its enforcement team was aided by the Nigerian Army 15 Field Engineering Regiment in Badagry.

Akintola alleged that the factory belonged to one Mr Chinedu Okafor, a suspected illegal drinks manufacturer, operating from his residence at No. O24, MTN Road, Badagry.

“Okafor’s suspicious activities caught the attention of the Nigerian Army, leading to his arrest and subsequent handover to NAFDAC officers at the Ports Inspection Directorate, Seme Border.

“Upon inspection, officers evacuated all equipment and materials used in the production of illicit drinks, and effectively shut down the illegal factory.

“Investigations revealed that Okafor’s longstanding involvement in criminal activities has compromised regulated alcohol drinks in the area,” he said,

He also said that the suspect would be prosecuted.

Akintola noted that NAFDAC emphasised the need for public vigilance, while urging Nigerians to report suspicious activities to safeguard public health.

He said the agency warned Nigerians on the consumption of adulterated alcohol, adding that it could lead to kidney and liver failure or even death.

Akintola called on Nigerians to always consider the “4 Ps” (Place, Price, Packaging, Product) before buying any alcoholic product.

“The World Health Organisation (WHO), in their Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health, estimated that more than three million people died all over the world as a result of alcohol poisoning.

“The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) says that one of every 10 cancer cases in Nigeria can be traced to alcohol and 4.7 percent of overall cancer cases in Nigeria in 2019 can be attributed to consumption of adulterated alcohol.

“Nigerians must remain vigilant and scrutinize branded drinks to distinguish them from counterfeits before consuming them,” he said.

The media consultant assured that NAFDAC would continue to ensure that the level of counterfeit products nationwide was brought to the barest minimum, so that people would consume only healthy and safe products.

He enjoined the public to report any suspicious activity of illegal producers of adulterated products or similar activities to the nearest NAFDAC office nationwide.

  • BREAKING: Petrol hits N1,000 per litre in Badagry

BREAKING: Petrol hits N1,000 per litre in Badagry

Some residents of Badagry in Lagos State were stranded on Tuesday as most commercial vehicles plying the area were off the road due to scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise called petrol.

A correspondent, who monitored the situation, reports that many workers and businessmen were sighted waiting endlessly at some bus stops due to unavailability of vehicles.

The situation led to hike in transport fare as a litre of petrol in the area now sells as high as N1,000, while fare rose from N800 to N1, 500 from Badagry to Mile 2.

At some popular bus stations in Badagry – Aradagun, Mowo and Agemowo, scores of residents were seen struggling to enter a few available taxis and commercial buses.

Mr Johnson Afilaka, a Badagry resident, said he could not go to work on Monday due to increase in transport fare from Badagry to Mile 2.

“Today, we have queued up for buses, but none has come. A few taxis that came raised their fares so high.

“Government should come to our aid in Badagry by providing some of the Lagos BRT buses for us here,” he said.

Mrs Christiana Adigun, a staff of the National Population Commission (NPC), said she could not drive to her office due to difficulty in getting petrol for her car.

She said that in spite of the fact that she was willing to buy a litre at N1,000, it was difficult to get the product, adding that getting a commercial vehicle to her office also posed another challenge.

On sales of petrol in Badagry, NAN reports that only the NNPC fuel station at Aradagun and Mobil fuel station in Badagry were selling at official prices of N568 and N610 respectively.

However, other independent marketers with fuel stations were selling between N950 and N1,000 per litre.

Mr Friday Ajasa, a motorist, said his car had been on the queue at NNPC Aradagun since 7.00.a.m, adding that as at 12.00.noon, he was yet to get the product.

“When we blame government for the scarcity, we should as well blame petrol marketers in Badagry for the hike because they are not helping the situation.

“Some of the cars on queue at the fuel stations in Badagry belong to cross- border illegal petrol dealers who usually take the product to Benin Republic to re-sell.

“Most of the major marketers here prefer to sell to them rather than sell to residents and this is the height of unpatriotic conduct.

“When these people enter, they buy up to 350 litres of petrol inside one car, and for us who just wanted 15 litres in our vehicles, they will tell you that petrol has finished,” he said.

Mrs Funke Alabi, a motorist on queue at Mobil filling station, called on security agents to check excesses of petrol pump attendants in the area.

Explaining the reason for petrol scarcity, Alhaji Abdul-Ganiyu Adelani, the Chairman, Independent Petroleum Marketers, Badagry, blamed the scarcity on lack of product at NNPC tank farm.

Adelani urged the NNPC to make available more petrol in their tank farms so that all filling stations in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria would get enough supply.
