Lagos to establish coconut processing factory in Badagry

The Lagos State Government says it will establish a coconut processing factory in Badagry to further optimize the use of coconut and harness the economic potentials in the value chain.

The State Acting Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms Abisola Olusanya, stated this Wednesday at the Year 2020 Coconut Day Celebration at Lagos Farm Centre, Agege.

The event was organised by the Lagos State Coconut Development Authority.

She said that the factory would be solely dedicated for the processing of coconut husk to coir, and cocopeat among others, under a Public Private Partnership arrangement.

She noted that these initiatives further reinforced the state’s position as the number one coconut producer in Nigeria in addition to providing employment opportunities for the teeming citizens.

She said the processing factory would also catalyze the entire industry, such that more people would come within the sub sector and create more business opportunities in the value chain.

According to him, Lagos State is the largest coconut producing state in Nigeria, contributing over 70 per cent to what the nation produced.

“I believe Nigeria as a whole produces over 350,000 tonnes of coconut annually but it is far behind what the likes of Philippines, Malaysia and other Asians countries are producing on an annual bases.

“We are very much far behind. To further optimize the use of coconut value chain, the state has proposed to establish a coconut factory in Badagry, solely dedicated for the processing of Coconut husk to Coir, coco peat etc. under a PPP arrangement in her 2021 Annual Work Plan and Budget (AWPB).

“It is believed that with all these efforts, Lagos State will continue to be number one coconut producer in Nigeria. This will to a great extent provide jobs and employment for teeming citizens.

“The support will also lead to various job creation in other areas aside the above mentioned and contribute to export and foreign exchange earnings for Nigeria,” she said.

Olusanya reiterated Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to adopting a much more robust food security strategy for the state next year.

The acting commissioner said the theme of this year’s celebration, “Coconut in the 21st Century Economy,” was aimed at creating awareness for the promotion of production, processing, utilization and commercialization of the coconut value chain.

She said that the occasion took into cognizance the fact that Nigeria ranked l8 among over 92 coconut producing countries of the world, of which Lagos State contributes about 70 per cent of national production of coconut and its products.

“Undoubtedly, agriculture remains the fulcrum of human survival with majority of the resources donated by nature.

“As such, it is not an overstatement that the crop we are celebrating today is perhaps one of the most single useful crop known to man in terms of versatility, product utilisation and longevity.

“This occasion, therefore, serves as another timely wake up to go back to the basics and rekindle the interests and values of coconut and its plethora of products for social, environmental, economic and wellness advantages as seen to be practiced and enjoyed sustainably by coconut driven economies.

‘Lagos has comparative advantage for coconut production, processing, utilisation and commercialisation and as of today, remains the hub of coconut in Nigeria and all coconuts traversing the West Coast of Africa,” she said.

Olusanya noted that the implementation of many initiatives in coconut sub-sector by the state government was to further bring awareness to the potentials in the coconut subsector of Agriculture that has not been fully tapped.

She congratulated all the coconut value chain actors and assured them of continuous government’s support in providing an enabling environment to unleash potentials of the wonder crop to an enviable level.

“I strongly advise actors in this value chain to make optimal use of the opportunities of this year’s commemoration of World Coconut Day to network, share information and diversify innovation among others in order to better their lots.

“The government alone cannot drive the initiative therefore, more investors are invited to partner with the state government by investing in the sub-sector to ensure sustainable job creation and food security.

“The development of the state can only be achieved if all hands are on deck,” she added.

In his presentation, Dr Joshua Odewale of the Nigeria Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), Benin Ciy, urged government to set up an endowment fund for coconut and coconut products national consumption and export for about 20 years, noting that Philippines set a 25 year endowment fund goal.

He said there was need for government to take coconut as a personal crop with focus on development for enhancement of survival as if there was an international lockdown restrictions on importation of any coconut product both secondary and downstream products.

He said government must know the crop and identify the genuine stakeholders in the coconut industry as well as identify the secondary industry product need of the industry.

  • Jubilation in Lagos as JAMB suspends use of NIN for 2020 UTME

Jubilation in Lagos as JAMB suspends use of NIN for 2020 UTME

Some candidates from Badagry who were preparing for the forthcoming 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) expressed joy on Saturday as JAMB suspended the National Identification Number ( NIN) registration.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews that it was a welcome development.

NAN also reports that some of the parents whose children had undergone various challenges in an attempt to register for the NIN took to the streets expressing their happiness over the suspension.

They lauded the timely suspension of the NIN registration which was one of the requirements needed by potential candidates to register for the 2020 UTME.

They thanked the registrar of JAMB, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, for his timely intervention on the issue.

The registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, had announced the suspension of using NIN as a requirement to be met by candidates intending to write the 2020 UTME while addressing journalists in Abuja on Saturday.

He said that the move was to provide more time for candidates to get their national identification numbers.

He said the the suspension was also to address the technical challenges experienced at some centres.

Oloyede told potential candidates to disregard the use of NIN for the 2020 registration and strictly comply with other procedures for the registration.

Mr Felix Godonu, a parent and the President of Hengo Badagry Youth Association, told NAN that the suspension was prompt and a welcome development.

“This will save the time during which students queue for the collection of NIN which has also given room for extortion from the students.

“The stress that the students have been going through in last few months is uncalled for.

“The Federal Government should decentralise the registration process by using banks , tertiary institutions and online registration method.

“Our association had to support some students with transportation fares before they could travel to Ogun to register for NIN.

“It is high time for our government to have an up-to-date data base; these students had written examinations conducted by WAEC, NECO and GCE in the past.

“Even, the JAMB registration process is enough for the government to generate NIN for their intending candidates,” he said.

Godonu urged JAMB to use the period between now and when next candidates would be registering for UTME to find a lasting solution to NIN registration.

According to him, this will save the students and their parents from the stress they had gone through in recent weeks because some of the children’s health cannot withstand such.

Mrs Tonia Kalu, a Deputy Director, National Population Commission (NPC), commended the Federal Government for its current action.

“When government is ready, they should make available adequate equipment to match the teeming population of students seeking admission into the country’s universities,” she said.

Mrs Sewede Pot-Balogun, a parent and the Coordinator, Badagry Women Development Forum, commended the Federal Government for suspending the exercise.

“I always feel sad every morning while passing through the NIMC office in Badagry and seeing our youths on endless queue waiting for NIN registration.

“Most of the periods they would have used to study were being wasted on the exercise. Some of our children have not been able to get it done in the past one month.

“Touts had hijacked the exercise thus extorting money from our children. This is bad and we are grateful that the pain has ended for the main time,” she said.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos Command, on Wednesday said it had arrested eight suspects, including four Beninese, for pipeline vandalism, vowing to intensify the fight against the crime in the state.

“I enjoin the populace to avail the corps and other security agencies with necessary intelligence information to rid the state of all forms of crimes,” Otoibhi said.

Ex-Beauty Queen calls for prompt rehabilitation of Lagos-Badagry Expressroad, waterways

An appeal has gone to the Federal and Lagos State Governments to complete very quickly the ongoing recontruction of the Lagos -Badagry Expressroad and its waterways.
Mrs Ebele Enemchukwu, a former Mrs Nigeria United Nations and Mrs Tourism United Nations at different times, made the appeal on Saturday.
Enemchukwu spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) during a tour of tourism sites and where slave masters used to chain their slaves in the ancient town of Badagry.
NAN reports that the tour was part of the activities ahead of the 15th AKWAABA African Travel and Tourism Market slated for Sept. 22, 2019 to Sept.24, 2019 in Lagos.
The programme was also to welcome Africans in the Diaspora back to their root and commemorate 400 years after the first slave ship was docked in South America in 1619 with slaves from Africa.
She said that after 400 years of freedom from slavery, Badagry was still playing a significant role in Africa slave history and must not be abandoned; rather it should be guarded and be promoted for international recognition.
Enemchukwu who spoke about her experience during a boat cruise to Badagry and a return trip to Lagos from Badagry through the road decried the deplorable state of the road network and the waterways.
She, however, called on the Federal Government to rehabilitate the road network leading to Badagry considering the relevance of the ancient town to history and tourism development in the country.
” This is an amazing experience; beautiful, very enriching culturally and otherwise; this is my first time on a boat cruise for a long distance and has really added to my wealth of experience.
” I enjoyed the Badagry biscuits “Ajangun” prepared locally which reminded me of Pringles; this tells us that we have a lot that are unique to us.
” But I am not actually impressed with the road and waterways networks to Badagry, this is going to be a discouraging factor for intending tourists.
” If this place must survive, grow and made sustainable contributions to national development, the road network must be promptly worked on and the waterways sanitised of water debris.
” Government has to promote the sites here because the tourism potential are huge, everything we are looking for outside is here and it is good for people to connect to their root,” she said.
The ex- beauty queen urged Africans in the Diaspora to start considering retracing their steps back to their roots and get connected to where their history began.
” Badagry is home, no place like home; I advise Africans all over the world to visit their roots and celebrate freedom from slavery but celebrate Africa’s victory,” she said.

  • Badagry king mysteriously signed CAC documents 9 years after death

The Police Special Fraud Unit (SFU) has alleged at an Ikeja Special Offences Court that late Oba Afolabi James of Kweme, Badagry in Lagos had mysteriously signed some Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) forms in 2011, nine years after his death.
The king died on Jan. 30, 2002.
The SFU claimed that while investigating Semasa James, a son to the late king, accused of defrauding his 26 siblings of their N500 million inheritance, they uncovered suspicious signatures purportedly signed by the dead king in documents of CAJ Industrial Enterprises, the deceased’s company.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Friday during trial of Semasa and Afolabi Kazeem, his personal assistant over the alleged fraud, Mr Oluwafemi Olabisi, the Prosecutor for the SFU in order to prove that the king’s signature on the company’s document was forged, had subpoenaed the CAC as a witness.
Representing the CAC was Mr Christopher Etim, a compliance officer, who testified as the 13the prosecution witness.
While being led in evidence by Olabisi, Etim said that he had brought before the court, copies of some CAC documents namely; Form CAC 2.1 – particulars of company secretary- Form CAC 3 -change of registered address and Form CAC 7, particulars of directors.
The CAC compliance officer informed the court that the late king’s signature and the defendant’s signature were appended in CAC forms in the years 2011 and 2012.
Etim said: “In form CAC 7, James Afolabi Ogungbe, the late king is named as the first director; the second director is named James Kola Semasa, the first defendant.
“On the column for remarks: it states appointed, and there are no directors aside the first and second directors.
“The signature on the second page belongs to James Afolabi Ogungbe and the signature was signed on Nov. 28, 2011.
“The resolution is signed by the first director James Afolabi Ogungbe. I arrived at that conclusion from Form CAC 7.
“Form CAC 2.1, is particulars of persons who is the company secretary of the company or any person therein, it was signed by Mr James Kola Semasa and Mr James Afolabi Ogungbe on March 21, 2012.
“Form CAC 3, is the notice of situation or change of registered address.
“Mr James Kola Semasa signed as a director in this form and there is a resolution attached to same, signed by Mr James Kola Semasa and Mr James Afolabi Ogungbe on Nov. 24, 2016.”
While being cross-examined by the defence counsel, Mr Martin Oyigbo, Etim reiterated that although he was not a signature or handwriting expert, as a legal practitioner and compliance officer, he was conversant with the documents he presented before the court.
The witness also emphasised that the signatures in all the CAC forms he presented before the court were consistent and the same.
“When documents are presented for verification, all these stamps are not on it. If you look closely at these signatures you will safely conclude that they are the same.
“The original resolution was signed by the same person. The signature on the left hand side is Mr James Kola Semasa while that on the right is Mr James Afolabi Ogungbe.
“These documents come before us at CAC every other day. I can safely say that these signatures contained in Form CAC 7 are the same in the other documents,” Etim said.
Following Etim’s testimony, Olabisi informed the court that the SFU would be closing their case against the defendants.
Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo adjourned the case until Oct. 16 and Oct.17 for defence.
NAN reports that Semasa is facing a five-count charge of stealing, forging of company resolution, fraudulent disposing of trust property and forgery.
Kazeem and the Badagry prince are jointly charged with two-counts of conspiracy to defraud and cheating.
The SFU alleged that the prince abused his position of trust as an administrator of his late father’s estate by fraudulently converting N500 million property from 2000 to 2017 in Lagos.
“According to the second count of the charge, the defendant had in 2011, forged the resolution of a company called CAJ Industrial Enterprises, dated Nov. 28, 2011.
“He had purported that the resolution was signed by his father, who was one of the directors of the company. Meanwhile, his father had died nine years earlier on Jan. 30, 2002.
“The defendant had forged the resolution with the intent that it will be acted upon as genuine to the prejudice of any person,” he said.
The prosecutor noted that Semasa had fraudulently sold a property, belonging to the late king’s estate, located at Plot 1440, Ilesanmi St., Itire Road, Surulere, to a private individual.
He also illegally leased another estate property, located at Plot 282 Ajose Adeogun St., Victoria Island, Lagos to Ecobank Plc.
The SFU prosecutor also threw some light on Kazeem’s alleged role as an accomplice in defrauding the late king’s estate.
“Sometime in 2017 in Lagos, Semasa and Kazeem fraudulently tricked and cheated the beneficiaries of the late king of N150 million which was part of the proceeds of sale of a property, located at Dideolu Estate, Victoria Island, Lagos,” Olabisi said.
The prosecutor noted that Semasa had also forged a purchase receipt, dated Nov. 15, 2004 and an undated deed of assignment between himself, Bolarinwa James, Mrs Alakija – nee James, Hon. Justice Adebayo Adeniji and Mrs Saidat Taiwo.
The offences contravene Sections 383(1), 383(2)(f), 390(9), 421,434, 465 and 467 of the Criminal Code, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

APC candidate to adopt Alaba Market model in empowering constituents

An APC House of Representatives candidate, Mr Babatunde Hunpe. Has pledged to adopt the Alaba International market model to empower members of his constituency and tackle poverty, if elected.

Hunpe, who is a Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, made the promise in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, in Badagry.

According to the candidate, there is a model Igbos at the Alaba International Market have been using to assist the younger ones by empowering them after they have served them for a number of years.

“We have gone to the Alaba International market to study this model and we are going to adopt this model in empowering our people.

“This will help to tackle poverty amongst our people.

“The model is that a master will train his apprentices for a couple of years. After the training, he will establish shops for them and follow them up for a year or two.

“After assisting them and seeing that they can now stand on their own, the master will then leave them,’’ he said.

Hunpe said that if elected, he would use the model to train people who are jobless, thas well as those youths that are unemployed.

“After they have been trained in different professions, we will establish them and follow them up for a year or two, and when they are able to stand on their own, we will leave them.

“We will do it in such a way that people will see the impact in them. I will use the office to stem poverty among our people.

“I don’t believe in giving my people N10, 000 or N20, 000 for empowerment. They will use the money for food and drinks and when next you see them, you won’t feel the impact.

“Whatever I do, I will ensure that it impacts appropriately on them,’’ he said.

Hunpe said that he would set up a `Think Tank’ among the youths from the local government and the two Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Badagry.

“These youths, who will come from different professions, will be advising us on the needs of their people.

“They will advise us on what to present to the House, as regards the challenges in their communities.

“These young ones will be reasoning for us because two good heads are better than one,’’ he said.

The APC candidate said that he had set up a Media Committee headed by Dr Paul Thovoethin, to ensure that all the activities of the party in Badagry get to the people.

“We want the people to know what we are doing in the party,’’ he said.
