Founder and Senior Pastor, The Citadel Global Community Church, CGCC, Tunde Bakare has offered part of his church facilities at Akilo, Ogba area of Lagos to the Lagos State Government to be used as isolation centre for the treatment of Coronavirus patients.

Bakare commended the state government, well meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies for the effort at curtailing the spread of Coronavirus.

“We commend the LASG and well meaning individuals and corporate bodies for their efforts at controlling the spread of this pandemic in Lagos and by extension Nigeria.

“We pray for divine health, wisdom and energy for the leadership of Lagos State and frontline healthcare workers

“The CGCC is offering the LASG parts of our current Church facilities at Akilo Road, Ogba, to be used as an isolation centre for COVID-19 cases.

“The CGCC Medical Missions will onboard LASG officials to ensure the best utilization of this space,” he said on Sunday.

Bakare added his church, formerly known as Latter Rain Assembly, has also offered its private residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State to the state government to be used as isolation centre.

He said the church should desist from condemning the government, but rather support them to fight the virus.

Court adjourns trial of Sowore, Bakare till April

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has adjourned the trial of the Convener of #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu adjourned the trial until April 1 and 2 in a ruling on Wednesday following the objection raised by the counsel to the defendants, Femi Falana.

Falana had challenged the testimony of the first witness presented by the prosecution, for giving evidence outside his written statement.

But the prosecutor, Kayode Halilu, insisted that he served a summary of the witness statement on the defendants’ counsel and the witness.

The witness is one Rasheed Olawale, a Principal Staff Officer of the Department of State Services (DSS) in charge of Surveillance and Communication Intelligence at the Lagos State Command.

After listening to both counsels, the trial judge ruled that the witness cannot be allowed to depose to a four-paragraph statement and give a 10-page of evidence.

She subsequently adjourned the trial to enable the prosecutor to reproduce the witness’ statement.

Sowore and Bakare are facing trial over treason and money laundering charges filed against them by the Federal Government.

They have, however, pleaded not guilty and have since been granted bail by the court.

The government had filed a motion on notice praying the court to grant an order excluding persons other than lawyers and accredited members of the press from witnessing the proceedings.

It also sought an order to clear the court whenever the prosecution witnesses were testifying, such that only the trial judge, parties and legal representatives, as well as accredited members of the press, would be able to see them.

The prosecution also asked for an order that the real names and addresses of the prosecution witnesses in the proceedings should not be disclosed.

Shortly before Sowore and Bakare’s trial began on Wednesday, Justice Ojukwu adjourned ruling on an application by the prosecution seeking to have witnesses shielded in the trial of the defendants.

This followed the request of Halilu who informed the court that the defence team served him a counter-affidavit and he needed time to reply to it.

  • Amotekun: Pastor Bakare praises South West governors

The Serving Overseer, Citadel Global Community Church, formerly known as Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said the efforts of the South-West governors over the region’s security outfit, codenamed ‘Operation Amotekun’ is commendable.

Bakare also said the raging debate over Operation Amotekun is a reminder that Nigeria has yet to address its foundation issues.

In an address titled, “No amount of ringworm medicine can cure leprosy,” which he delivered in his church on Sunday, Bakare said the Operation Amotekun debate showed that the nation could not sweep the foundation issues under the carpet unaddressed or run away from them.

Rather, the cleric said the way forward for the nation was “to travel downwards to revisit the constitutional foundations.”

He said, “When one considers the argument for and against Amotekun, one will find a recurring reference to the issues which we, as a nation, have failed to deal with in past decades.

“The proponents of Amotekun, particularly in the South, justify the move by referencing the Sharia police or Hisbah as a northern version of regional policing. The opponents, on the other hand, particularly from the North, express fears of possible regional political motivations.

“These are clear indications that the issues we swept under the carpet in past decades are still staring us in the face. We cannot continue to hide under the umbrella of one finger. It is time to address the underlying issues of nationhood and reset Nigeria on the path to predictable progress. No amount of ringworm medicine can cure leprosy.”

Bakare said while it was good that the South-West governors and the Federal Government had ironed out their differences over Operation Amotekun, the South-West states would do well to give legal backing to Operation Amotekun, by enacting the appropriate laws.

He said such laws should address “recruitment, screening, training and deployment procedures, as well as seamless tactical operations between the outfit on the one hand, and the conventional federal police commissions in the South-West states on the other hand”.

He, however, said the nation must capitalise on the Operation Amotekun debate to address its nagging foundation issue.

Bakare said, “The agreement between the Federal Government and the South-West governors notwithstanding, we must not let this moment pass by without once again telling ourselves some home truths regarding the underlying issues of constitutional federalism that have continued to confront us.

“We must not lose sight of the main issue in the Operation Amotekun debate, which is that the current mono-level security architecture has proved inadequate to combat the security challenges that confront not just the South-West but every zone in our nation – security challenges such as kidnapping, herdsmen attacks, cattle rustling, terrorism and the porosity of our borders.”

“We must not forget that, while the debate over the legality or otherwise of regional security efforts like Amotekun were raging during the past week, Nigeria was, once again, plunged into mourning with the murder of a chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Lawan Andimi, by regional terrorists.

“We must not forget the fact that tens of thousands have lost their lives to criminal elements who have taken advantage of the national security gaps in the respective zones of our federation.

This is why I believe that, even though the efforts of the South-West governors towards taking responsibility for the security of the zone are commendable, our nation needs a more strategically effective approach to national, regional and local security.”

  • I never asked Buhari to ‘handpick’ successor

Pastor ‘Tunde Bakare, the Serving Overseer of The Citadel Global Community Church (formerly known as The Latter Rain Assembly), on Sunday clarified that his remarks on succession was quoted out of context, noting that he never insinuated at any point that President Muhammadu Buhari should ‘pick’ or ‘choose’ his successor as widely reported in the media.

Bakare had in his state of the nation address titled, “Unveiling the true enemies of Nigeria” last Sunday tasked President Buhari to facilitate a system of “accurate succession.”

However, addressing the congregation on Sunday, he decried what he called the “unrecognisable reconstruction” of his utterances on succession.

According to him, his remarks were “interpreted as me asking Buhari to foist his choice on the nation in flagrant disregard of democratic principles.”

“I neither did this, nor did I insinuate at any point that Buhari should “pick” or “choose” his successor as some news outlets have conjured,” he said. Bakare in his rejoinder today, titled, “Much Ado About Succession”, reiterated that “Succession is about casting long term visions, building stable institutions and raising the next generation.”

He stressed that he was convinced that free, fair and credible election remains the only vehicle for achieving a succession from one democratically elected president to another.

He said there was nowhere in his statement he asked Buhari to choose a successor. He quoted his exact words as contained in the address: ‘…the third pivotal objective of governance should be to build a strong post-Buhari legacy facilitated by accurate succession…Therefore, even as we build institutions of democratic governance, a key responsibility that history has bestowed on President Muhammadu Buhari at this turning point in our journey to nationhood is to institutionalise systems of accurate succession that will build and sustain the Nigeria we desire.”

The reference to China, he added “had nothing to do with the Chinese system of government but more to do with Deng Xiaoping’s deliberate move to discover, develop and strategically deploy young leadership talents over an extended period as that country began a path to modernisation.” “Similarly, my reference to Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew was to underscore the role of pioneer or pivotal leaders of nations in institutionalising or resuscitating foundational values.

“Furthermore, the example of Mandela’s Succession Plan in South Africa was done within the proper democratic framework of a free, fair and credible election,” he added. Bakare said his “overriding concern in offering propositions was to forestall the emergence of a new iteration of recycled enemies who will once again seek to lock us into a cycle of doom and gloom at the turn of a new decade.”

“If we have been excellent at anything in Nigeria, it has been at creating a succession pipeline of the worst of us ruling over the best of us. On my part, I remain committed to facilitating, however God enables me, the emergence of the best, brightest, fittest and most competent Nigerians across every gamut of our national life,” he said.

  • Adesina knocks Bakare over call to manipulate, pick successor come 2023

Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, says his principal will not handpick his successor in 2023.

Speaking at a programme on Channels Television on Monday, Adesina said Buhari is interested in who succeeds him, but will not manipulate the process to favour anyone.

The presidential spokesperson was reacting to a statement by Tunde Bakare, serving overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly (LRA), who urged the president to be involved in the choice of his successor in order not destroy his legacies.

“By May 2023 God willing he would have finished his second term as president, he would not have stood for another term and he will be exiting. So, he has that at the back of his mind,” Adesina said.

“Pastor Bakare said he should be interested in who succeeds him, yes I’m sure the president will be interested in who succeeds him but he will not manipulate the process, to pick a successor.

“The president will not pick a successor. We know him, he is not somebody like that. Will he be interested in the process? Yes, he will. He will ensure that there is a free, fair and credible election; that nobody will come to use money and resources to bamboozle his way into the leadership of the country. It will not happen. The president will ensure free, fair and credible process; but to handpick a successor? No, he will not do that.”

Adesina said Buhari will not hand “Nigeria over to those who will take her back or hand Nigeria over to looters once again.

“One thing that is clear is that the president will do whatever is needful before the next set of general elections. Early enough is relative but the president will do whatever is needful,”he said.

  • 2023: Pick your successor, Pastor Bakare tells Buhari

The Serving Overseer, Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari, not to leave the choice of his successor in 2023 to chance.

Recall TheNewsGuru published a report on Bakare’s nationwide live broadcast held in his church on Sunday.

In the course of the programme, Bakare said it was important for the retired Major General to influence who would emerge his successor in 2023 so that his legacies would not be rubbished.

Buhari had last year declared that he had no intention of grooming anyone to succeed him in office.

“Succession is very funny because if I did find anybody, I will create more problems for him or her. Let those who want to be President try as much as I did,” Buhari had said last July.

But Bakare, who had declared his intention to be Nigeria’s 16th President after Buhari, who is number 15, said there was a risk that a looter might take over if Buhari did not deliberately plan and determine who his successor would be.

Bakare said, “God is into succession. Anyone in government that does not concern himself about succession is destroying his own legacy because the person coming after you can just mess up everything.

“Let us ask God for grace of accurate succession; that he (Buhari) will not hand over the baton of government and governance to thieves and perverts, to corrupt and power-drunk individuals, but those who are true patriots, who will serve like our founding fathers served; though not perfect, they did their best.”

Bakare said by institutionalising a system of succession, Buhari would join the league of strong world leaders like the late Deng Xiaoping of China; the late Nelson Mandela of South Africa and Goh Chok Tong of Singapore.

He said, “As the government of President Muhammadu Buhari ushers us into the second decade of the 21st century, the third pivotal objective of governance should be to build a strong post-Buhari legacy facilitated by accurate succession.

“In this regard, Nigeria must learn from some of the best succession examples in recent history. Of note is the legacy of Deng Xiaoping, a second-generation Chinese leader who laid the foundation for today’s China. Xiaoping flagged off the ‘Four Modernisations’ programme, which searched around the country for leaders who, in his words, were ‘revolutionary, younger, more knowledgeable, and more specialised.’

“In three decades, that programme gave China a succession of leaders who piloted China’s economic transformation, including the current President, Xi Jinping. Without their foresight, we would not be running to China today to finance our shortsightedness.

“We must also learn from Nelson Mandela who stepped aside after one term, but not without positioning the likes of Thabo Mbeki and Cyril Ramaphosa. We must learn from the success story of Singapore, whose former Prime Minister, Goh Chok Tong, once said, ‘Mr Lee Kuan Yew has always emphasised political succession, and when I took over, likewise, I planned for succession…Prime Minister Lee is also working very hard to plan for succession.’

“Therefore, even as we build institutions of democratic governance, a key responsibility that history has bestowed on President Muhammadu Buhari at this turning point in our journey to nationhood is to institutionalise systems of accurate succession that will build and sustain the Nigeria we desire. This is a task that must be done.”

  • Last time I stepped into a bank was in 1985 – Pastor Bakare

Senior Pastor of Latter Rain Ministry, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said that the last time he stepped into a banking hall for any financial transaction was in 1985.

The Pastor said the other times he had stepped into a banking hall would be to sanctify a new branch as banks always come to his home for transactions.

Speaking on the topic: A Healthy, Robust Heavenly Bank Account, the cleric said, “I am not showing off as you will call it, I am only provoking you to charge up yourself.

“My mother was not a rich woman, but someone once told her that she would have bank accounts abroad and she laughed, but right now, she has a son that has bank accounts abroad.

“These things don’t really have anything to do with education…”

Pastor Bakare said: If I can run bank accounts without visiting the banks, you too can. I don’t have two heads, neither does Dangote. Paying your tithe and offering doesn’t mean you have a heavenly bank account.”

“If you think I am going to rush this sermon, you missed. I am going to go slow, after all, our president is ‘Baba Go Slow’ and I am his very good friend…

“To store up a treasure in heaven requires a different approach. Holding loosely and sharing freely and giving away heartily treasure for God’s kingdom purpose,” Bakare said.

  • Bakare faults Nigeria’s education system, recommends total overhaul

Tunde Bakare, the senior pastor of Latter Rain Assembly, says Nigeria’s education system needs a total overhaul to create productive graduates.

Bakare made the statement on the sidelines of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Annual Goalkeepers meetings in New York, on Friday.

He said 50% of Nigerian youths are not employed while 25% are unemployable.

According to him, the current system has huge implications on the economic development and life outcomes of young people.

“In the past, when you are coming out from the university, there are regular jobs, car loan and other facilities that will keep you in the country,” Bakare said.

“Right now, because of the lack of jobs, job creation has become a major issue. Our young people are now taking to crime and are benefiting from proceeds of crime and kidnapping.

“But with the right policy in place, we can inject new ideas that will create jobs for our people.

“I trust God that the right leadership will come. I call them a new breed without greed that will consider others and begin to create opportunities for us within our countries.

“About 50% of our youth are not employed and 25% of them are not employable. So, there is something fundamentally wrong with our education system that is producing semi-illiterates.”

The pastor, therefore, called on the government to review the education curriculum saying Nigeria would need better-educated graduates to cope and compete in the world.

Bakare had trended at the weekend after a February 2018 video recording where he said he is “number 16” after President Muhammadu Buhari, who he says is “number 15″ in the ”scheme of things” resurfaced.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Goalkeeper’s report, which measures the state of performance of the SDGs across the world, had said there is inequality in almost every location in the world.

According to the report, the quality of education people receive differs depending on the state or local government area they live in.

The report showed that a girl born in Ado Ekiti will most likely finish her secondary education, but if the same girl were born in Garki local government in Jigawa, she will not complete primary education.

  • 2023: Buhari not Nigeria’s Moses neither are you Joshua, Fani-Kayode blasts Tunde Bakare

Former Aviation Minister and Peoples Democratic Party’s chieftain, Femi Fani-Kayode has reacted to the Senior Pastor and founder, Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare’s dream of taking over from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

According to Bakare, in a viral video, while Buhari is number 15, he would be the 16th president of Nigeria. He also said he was born for that purpose to be president.

The controversial pastor said God had prepared him for this job for more than 30 years.

In his reaction, Fani-Kayode disagreed with the clergyman and also lambasted him for supporting President Buhari.

In his tweet, Fani-Kayode also said Buhari is not leading the country to the Promise Land.

“If you say Buhari is Moses and you are Joshua that will succeed him then something is wrong. Buhari is NOT Moses and NO-ONE that endorses his vicious, divisive and sectional policies can be described as Joshua. He is NOT leading us to the Promise Land, he is leading us to HELL!”
