FCT residents task government on proactive, speedy measures on insecurity

Some residents of Bwari Area Council of the FCT have tasked government at all levels, including security operatives, to be proactive and speedy in dealing with criminality in the territory.

The residents, who spoke in separate interviews on Friday in Abuja, said that practical measures were needed to end the menace.

There had been a spike in the abduction and killing of residents by bandits, especially in Bwari Area Council.

Mr Ahmed Aliyu, a public servant and resident of Bwari, said that all hands must be on deck to tackle the challenge as no one was safe anymore.

“All in charge, the leaders, stakeholders, including the heads of security operatives must join hands and end this menace, not just in the FCT but also neighbouring states.

“We cannot continue to wait for terror to happen before we begin to meet and strategise on how to address the challenge while lives are being wasted daily.

“We are tax payers and expect the government to protect us as they have sworn oaths, individually, to do. People are scared; no one is sleeping for fear of kidnappers.

“We also expect that the security agents should have gotten information aforehand on these attacks, not always coming after the attacks have been carried out and people killed.

“This is getting too much,” Aliyu said.

He added that the fear of kidnappers in especially the remote communities of the area had left residents taking refuge in the township where he also added, had seemed insecured.

Another resident, Mr John Maxwell, a business man in the area also said that it was only logical for the masses to expect so much from their leaders as the leaders expect much from their followers.

He said that no one should wait to be told what to do when it came to their jobs.

Maxwell, however, advised that tactical teams must be directed around the locations recently attacked by kidnappers and beyond, with a view to clamping on the criminals infiltrating the FCT.

“People should not die before those in charge take up to their responsibilities.

“Kidnappings have been going on in some of these areas since last year and not much has been done yet and it keeps reoccurring.

“They expect us to believe they have no security alert on these criminalities or is it hard to nip this issue in the bud.

“Please, we are begging now; enough is enough; those responsible for our safety should brace up to their jobs; they cannot continue to move at their pace at the detriment of the people,” he said.

Similarly, Mrs Agnes Nnoli, another resident, advised that people must continue to remain prayerful and vigilant at all times, while also taking note of strangers or alien activities around them.

She explained that in as much as human efforts were needed to secure people from incessant security challenges, it was the duty of individuals to pray for divine intervention.

Nnoli also prayed to God to touch the heart of leaders to do the right thing for the benefit of the people and not for their selfish interests, while also praying for the total collapse of criminal syndicates in the country.

The Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday, said that the FCT Administration was taking steps to address the security challenges affecting some sections of the territory.

The minister, who acknowledged the challenges, urged residents not to panic, as government had taken measures to address the ugly situation.

The protesting priests carried placards with the inscription, ”We are Catholic priests and not terrorists”

Speaking at the Queen of Apostle Catholic Church, Archbishop of Kaduna Archdiocese, Most Reverend Matthew Ndagoso, lamented the rising insecurity in the country.

He stated that Nigeria has become a failed state under President Muhammadu Buhari due to the country’s security condition.

According to him, Nigerians live in perpetual fear and have become hopeless due to the rising attacks and killings, while the Federal Government seems to be incapacitated to tackle the problem.

The Bishop called on the government to establish state police to protect the vulnerable communities against bandits attacks since those saddled with the responsibility of protecting the lives and property of the citizens have failed to do so

Reacting to the killing of  Rev Fr. Vitus Borogo via his twitter handle, former Kaduna central senator  Shehu Sani,   condemned the killing of the cleric, saying something drastic must be done to nip banditry in the bud.

His tweet reads: “The killing of Reverend Father Vitrus Bogoro of the Kaduna polytechnic Catholic Church by terrorists in his farm in Kaduna is sad, unfortunate, and condemnable. My condolences to the Catholic community in Kaduna and his relations.”

  • Shehu Sani promises to end banditry in Kaduna if elected Governor

Shehu Sani promises to end banditry in Kaduna if elected Governor

An aspirant of the PDP in next year’s governorship election in Kaduna State, Senator Shehu Sani has promised to end banditry in the state if elected.

Senator Sani said his candidature would being sucviur to the people of Kaduna state who have suffered the consequences of banditry and other forms of security challenges under Governor Nasir Elrufai and the APC.

Sani who represented the Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly said he also plans to revive the textile industries.

He stressed that it was unacceptable that bandits decide the fate of citizens of the state, adding that residents could only sleep with their two eyes closed in just two of the 23 Local Government Areas of the state.

The PDP governorship hopeful spoke while addressing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ Secretariat in Kaduna on Tuesday ahead of the party’s primary.

He maintained that he remained the only aspirant that could defeat the ruling party in the state in the race to the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House.

The former legislator noted that he was not disputing the facts that all the six other governorship aspirants of the platform were eminently qualified, but added that he was the only aspirant that could confront the state Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai.

In his words, “my aspiration is not a do or die affair. my aspiration is informed by the fact that the state is badly governed by the APC, and I have a list of agendas on the ground to solve the problems.

“I am out to unite the people of Kaduna State. I am a bridge that can unite the people of southern and northern parts of Kaduna who have been divided on so many fronts. I want to correct the inequality created by this APC government.

“I will also address the security challenges in the state. Kaduna has become a bad example as one of the most insecure states in Nigeria, with the government being helpless.

“There are 23 local government areas in Kaduna state and 21 local governments are under security siege. It is only in Kaduna North and Kaduna South that you sleep with your eyes closed.

“It has been 49 days since people have been kidnapped in the Abuja-Kaduna train and the victims are still in captivity.

“As governor, I will ensure that security is manned by experts who are well trained to address insecurity and not journalists.

Sani added, “Kaduna State people today are at the mercy of bandits who now decide who dies and who survives. How come there is no Banditry in most parts of the North but Kaduna, TheNewsGuru.com learnt.

He continued; “I want to address the security challenges in the state. I will not be a governor that will say the security of my people is in the hands of the FG, I will answer my name as the chief security officer.

“When leaders cannot protect you from bandits and terrorists, they have no business being govt. The people of Kaduna are at the mercy of bandits.

“Another major agenda I have is the reactivation of moribund textile industries in Kaduna and provide necessary employment to our people.

“I will also embark on infrastructural development which will not only be about the city. I will spread development across all the local government areas.

“Kaduna is presently under tyranny. Therefore, I will discontinue bad legacies of the APC but continue with local government election where even the opposition can will election.”
