Police kill ‘two bandits’ along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Ogun state police command on Saturday said two persons have been gunned down during a gun duel with suspected kidnappers.

The police said it also recovered two AK 47 riffles at Bere forest in Onigaari along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

In a press statement made available to journalists in Abeokuta police spokesperson Abimbola Oyeyemi said this was made possible as a result of information received by the command from members of the public that the AK-47 bearing hoodlums, numbering about six, were sighted in the forest, possibly waiting for the appropriate time to strike.

“Upon the information, the commissioner of police, Edward Ajogun quickly deployed the command’s tactical teams, coordinated by the DPO Owode Egba division, CSP Olusola Oniyiku to the forest in search of the bandits,” the statement said.

“While the combing was going on, the hoodlums, on sighting the policemen, opened fire and a gun battle ensued.”

At the end of the encounter, he said that one of the bandits was shot dead on the spot, while others escaped with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

“Searching the forest further, one of the bandits with bullets wound was arrested in the bush but gave up the ghost few minutes after.

“Two AK-47 riffles with breech numbers 1983NF1040 and 1987-3-CA-1212 with five rounds of ammunition were recovered from them.

“The latest riffle recovery makes it four AK-47 riffles recovered by the command within the period of two weeks. ”

He said that sachets of tramadol and assorted charms were also recovered from the bandits.

“The commissioner of police, CP Edward Ajogun, has ordered for massive manhunt for the remaining members of the gang,” the statement added.

“He also appealed to members of the public, especially hospitals not to hesitate to inform the police if anyone with gunshot injuries is seen in their area.”

  • How ‘bandits’ hired private jets to attend Buhari son’s wedding in Kano – Sheikh Gumi

How ‘bandits’ hired private jets to attend Buhari son’s wedding in Kano – Sheikh Gumi

Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has condemned the hiring of private jets by politicians to attend the wedding ceremony of Yusuf Buhari, the son of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The cleric described the politicians who hired private jets to attend Buhari son’s wedding in Kano as bandits.

Recall that President Buhari’s son married Zarah Bayero, the daughter of Emir of Bichi, Nasiru Bayero in a grand ceremony held in Bichi, Kano on Friday.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the wedding was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, serving and former governors, traditional rulers, as well as prominent personalities from within and outside the country.

However, Gumi faulted Nigerian politicians for hiring private jets to attend the wedding during a preaching programme at Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna.

Except from the controversial cleric’s preaching below:

“Umar bn Kattab once took 16 dinar, which is equivalent to N2,040,000 today, from the treasury as estacode to Hajj. After their return, Umar admitted to Abdallah that they wasted public funds.

“Somebody told me private jets in Nigeria were all hired for the wedding of Buhari’s son. With your money, you can’t get a private jet because they were all booked.

“Some people are in captivity in both the bush and cities. Hunger is everywhere. People are facing all manner of problems, yet politicians spent public funds on private jets.

“When Prophet Mohammed married off his daughter, who came from Mecca or Yemen? In the entire Medina no righteous persons to oversee the solemnisation?

“First it was not an obligatory religious gathering. Umar bn Kattab went to Hajj. Second, public funds were taken to hire the private jets.

The cleric lamented about how politicians corrupted the clergy, saying religious leaders have become subservient to politicians.

“Some religious leaders cannot survive without behaving in a servile manner towards politicians.

“Politicians have spoilt the clerics. Atrocities are committed in the country but no one can speak up.

“You are spending money to hire jets to go to the wedding, while criminals are holding people to ransom in the bush. The criminals (bandits) are milking the people.

“Some people have never earned N1million in their life, but bandits would demand N10million. How many people sold their houses, farms, everything… and collected loans to pay a ransom?

“People think only those in the bush (bandits) milk us dry, no! Even our leaders milk us dry. Where did they get the money to hire all these jets?

“In one of the states, some pictures of a dilapidated hospital were sent to me. The roof was blown off and a patient was lying on the bed. That governor is in Kano to attend the wedding.

“How many schools were rehabilitated? The money that should be used to cater for the people is the one they hire private jets to junket around. Are you not also a bandit?

“We vent our anger against ourselves, other tribes. People are left killing themselves because of poor leadership,” Mr Gumi added.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Gambo Isah, who confirmed the abduction of the pupils, said the pupils were abducted by the hoodlums last Tuesday.

Isah, who did not disclose the name of the school, explained that the pupils were kidnapped by the marauding bandits while returning home from the Islamic school after closing hours.

He said: “Yesterday (Tuesday), after closing from school, some pupils while on their way going to their respective houses were abducted by bandits who went into Sakkai village.

“Nine of them (pupils) were abducted by the bandits but we are making frantic efforts with the view to rescue them from the hand of the hoodlums. Effort is in top gear”.

  • Buy guns, protect yourselves against bandits, Masari tells Katsina residents

Buy guns, protect yourselves against bandits, Masari tells Katsina residents

Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari, has called on residents in the areas prone to banditry to acquire weapons and defend themselves against the outlaws.

While noting that prayers are important, the governor said it was morally wrong for people to submit meekly to the bandits without any attempt to defend themselves.

“We must intensify prayers with clean minds to seek God’s forgiveness and intervention.

“We must all rise up to counter the insecurity challenge, we must not seat and watch some people buying guns attacking our Houses, we too should buy the guns and protect ourselves,” he said.

The governor said this on Tuesday when he paid a condolence and sympathy visit to families of 10 persons who were killed after being hit by a Nigeria Customs vehicle.

He also believes that it is the people’s meek submission that emboldens the bandits to continue with their heinous activities, stressing that people must divorce their minds from the mistaken notion that security is the sole responsibility of the government.

Addressing the issue of the incident, Governor Masari assured the people that the government was perusing all the necessary legal steps to seek redress for the families of the deceased, as well as those who sustained various degrees of injuries.

He added that legal experts had already been consulted to advise on the way forward to ensure speedy (legal) resolution of the matter.

The governor, however, cautioned the families of the victims not to succumb to any covert enticement from the Nigerian Customs Service, saying that doing so will compromise the government’s efforts to secure justice for the bereaved and injured.

“What Customs operatives are doing is wrong, and therefore, unacceptable,” Governor Masari said.

“Do not succumb to any covert enticement from the customs service, no matter what they offer or promise to do for you.

“Whatever they want to do for you, let it be in the open, not in secret.

“If you accept any secret offer, then you will be truncating the government’s efforts to seek justice for you, but if you resist any untoward move, the organisation will then have to rethink its attitude towards its host community”.

  • Criticising Buhari’s handling of bandits, secessionists is ‘pure hatred’ – Presidency

Criticising Buhari’s handling of bandits, secessionists is ‘pure hatred’ – Presidency

Those accusing the President of handling bandits and terrorists with a softer hand than the way secessionists are being treated have full of hatred, Mr Femi Adesina has said.

Adesina, who is President Muhammadu Buhari’s media adviser, made the statement while defending his principal in a piece titled ‘See How They’re Being Sent To God To Answer For Their Crimes’.

“It amazes, even confounds, to hear some people say President Muhammadu Buhari should go after Boko Haram terrorists and bandits with the same gusto he has displayed against separatists in the country,” he said.

“Amazing and confounding because what the Buhari government does daily in the north-east, north-west, and north-central parts of the country, where terrorists and bandits abound, is send them to God to answer for their crimes.

“Why then do some people claim that certain troublers of the country are being treated with softer hands, than some others? This could be due to deliberate ignorance, mischief, or pure hatred.”

The President’s spokesman stated that it was not new as his position had been confirmed by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya, on the day he was decorated with his new rank.

He reminded critics of the President’s directives to the nation’s security forces to crush all violent criminals and those sponsoring insurrection in the country.

Amid the continued outcry that the Nigerian leader had been softer on bandits than separatists, Adesina insisted that President Buhari’s order was carried out without fear or favour.

Those who keenly follow the war against insurgency and banditry in the North, according to him, will honestly admit that every effort is being made to extirpate the evil from the nation.

The presidential spokesman insisted that the present administration was cleaning the country of vermin.

“The baby that swears that his mother will not sleep, will himself keep forceful vigil. All over the country, terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, all types of criminals are being spoken to in the language they understand.

“And the victory of good over evil is sure, inexorable. Yet some people say they see nothing that the government is doing. Pitiable souls. Of all men most miserable,” he said.

Adesina added, “May God bless our troops. May He protect them, reward their labour of love. As for the cynics and skeptics, may God have mercy on them, open their eyes, and help them not to hate their own country any longer.”
