  • Last time I stepped into a bank was in 1985 – Pastor Bakare

Senior Pastor of Latter Rain Ministry, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said that the last time he stepped into a banking hall for any financial transaction was in 1985.

The Pastor said the other times he had stepped into a banking hall would be to sanctify a new branch as banks always come to his home for transactions.

Speaking on the topic: A Healthy, Robust Heavenly Bank Account, the cleric said, “I am not showing off as you will call it, I am only provoking you to charge up yourself.

“My mother was not a rich woman, but someone once told her that she would have bank accounts abroad and she laughed, but right now, she has a son that has bank accounts abroad.

“These things don’t really have anything to do with education…”

Pastor Bakare said: If I can run bank accounts without visiting the banks, you too can. I don’t have two heads, neither does Dangote. Paying your tithe and offering doesn’t mean you have a heavenly bank account.”

“If you think I am going to rush this sermon, you missed. I am going to go slow, after all, our president is ‘Baba Go Slow’ and I am his very good friend…

“To store up a treasure in heaven requires a different approach. Holding loosely and sharing freely and giving away heartily treasure for God’s kingdom purpose,” Bakare said.

The incident which occurred on Wednesday in Benin City, Edo State, at one of the new generation banks located along Sapele Road, caused commotion inside the banking hall, when the victim (name withheld), raised the alarm over the alleged disappearance of his genital.

He alleged that his genital mysteriously disappeared after the suspect who was behind him on the queue, touched him.

The commotion that ensued disrupted banking activities for several minutes, as the man stripped himself naked and wept uncontrollably.

The loud noise also attracted youths from the neighbourhood who dragged the suspect outside the banking hall and descended on him.

Attempts made by the management of the bank to rescue the suspect failed, as the youths insisted that the suspect must pay for his sin.

The prompt arrival of police operatives saved the suspect from the rage of youths from the neighbourhood who were bent on lynching him.

  • Tribunal reverses N29.2m VAT imposed by FIRS on bank

The Tax Appeal Tribunal, sitting in Abuja on Wednesday, reversed N29.2 million Federal Inland Revenue Service’s (FIRS) imposed as value added tax on Infinity Trust Mortgage Bank.

The bank had challenged FIRS’s imposition of the amount.

The tribunal chairman, Mrs Alice Iriogbe, delivering judgment, held that FIRS failed to prove that those services carried out by the bank were VATable.

He held further that the bank were not liable to be taxed on those services according to the VAT Act and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2011 as amended.

Iriogbe further held that the FIRS Service Information Status number 9 also supports the fact that such services by Mortgage Institutions were not VATable.

” In this circumstance, the tribunal holds that the VAT assessment dated May 17, 2018, in the sum of N29.2 million and the Respondent’s Demand Notice dated July 5, 2018 are hereby discharged, ” The tribunal held.

The appellant (the bank) had sought the order of the tribunal for the annulment of the FIRS’s assessment or demand notice dated May 17 and July 6, served on it with penalty at 10 per cent and interest at 15 per cent.

In its defence, FIRS argued that the letter of review and audited accounts were valid and issued in accordance with the relevant provisions of the law.

It, therefore, asked the tribunal to declare that the VAT demand served on the Bank was valid and made in accordance with the law.

The respondent further sought for a declaration that the VAT transaction by the appellant outside the main objectives of its business was liable to VAT.

FIRS further sought for an order compelling the appellant to pay to the respondent the sum of N29. 2 million, being its VAT liability for the period of 2015 to 2016 as contained in the demand letter.
