I was once addicted to pornography – Banky W

Singer Banky W who also doubles as a pastor has revealed he once struggled with promiscuity and pornography.

In a recent interview with The Visibility Lunch Hour, the media personalty added that God helped him with his struggles. “In the eyes of the world I was a successful artiste, but I still felt empty and wretched. There were things I was struggling with on a personal basis. Everything from promiscuity to pornography just, real things that people struggled with on a personal basis.

This is now getting to areas where one feel that one is in bondage and one is trying to clean oneself. So you are just stuck in this place of feeling far from God, feeling separated from God. Feeling that I have made a little bit of money but I am still not happy.

“I have been fortunate to be able to do what I love for a living, for a long time. I am grateful for the small success we have experienced in music, in film, in other ventures. But there is what I like to call a God shaped void inside every man.Until you start to fill that void with God, you will find that you will come up short regardless of what success you have or how successful or happy you may seem.in the eyes of the world.

There is an emptiness you feel when you are disconnected from that source. It is a purpose thing, not a pay thing. It’s a meaning thing not about money. That’s why you see some of this billionaires pass away on their own account,” he said.

How I handle fame- Banky W

Actor, filmmaker and musician, Banky W has opened up on how he handles fame.

Speaking in a chat with Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo, the entertainer said being famous can make a person thinks he is perfect.

According to him: “Entertainment business can fool you to think you are the best thing since sliced bread.2baba has had his own fair share of issues but the one thing people say about him is that he is a humble man. You sit with him and his humility just comes across. The number one tool for me in coping with fame is remembering to stay humble. Remembering that everything you have is a gift, it doesn’t belong to you. You are a steward, so you just try to steward it as best as you can. You use it in service to God, others and in service to society”.

Those who should be in jail holding political offices-Banky W

Singer cum politician, Banky said those who should be in jail are the ones contesting elections and holding political offices in the country.

The award winning entertainer made this known when he featured on Daily Digest, a Nigeria Info FM programme, on Tuesday.

Banky W said the trend is enabled by the growing apathy for political participation among Nigerians.

He said the people cannot continue to run away from politics because they consider it to be “dirty” and expect positive change in the country’s socio-political landscape.

“We can’t sit around and during the election season, people who should be in jail or exile are the ones on the campaign posters around and are the ones who keep getting into these powerful offices in the country,” he said.

“The truth is, it will always be dirty and dangerous if everybody who is good and everybody who is credible and everybody who has good interest at heart forever sits out of the process.

“Because then we will leave the scum of the earth that we have here to occupy these seats and then we will turn around and complain that Nigeria is bad.

“But it will always be bad if we continue to indulge in apathy. And I really think that apathy is one of our biggest problems.”

On why he joined politics, Banky W said :“Honestly, I would say it was frustration that got me into politics. Frustration with the status quo and the plights of young Nigerians. For many today, it’s no longer about how to thrive, it’s about survival. For me, that’s a thing of frustration”.

Nigeria, U.S tops countries with high rate of depression -Banky W

Iconic singer and actor, Banky W has averred that having money and attaining success, doesn’t guarantee fulfillment.

The ‘Final Say’ crooner made this known recently when he spoke at The Water Brook Church in Lagos.

According to him, one can be prosperous without having peace of mind.

“You can have prosperity without peace, you can have cash without contentment. If money were the key to happiness why do so many wealthy people commit suicide? Meaning is more than money, it’s not about pay, and it’s about purpose.

I was doing some research for this message and I looked up the top ten countries that deal with depression and anxiety. It may surprise you to know that two of this top ten countries that deal with depression and anxiety, were Nigerian and America. That is interesting to me because it is clear that it is not a financial thing. Because ‘Yankee’, they have money, even the poorest people there are on welfare. The government supports them in one way or form. These are two countries on different ends of the financial spectrum in terms of earning power, in terms of GDP, in terms of revenue, in terms of income. Yet when you look up depression and mental illness, US is there, Nigeria is there”.

The politician who contested in the National Assembly election to represent Eti-Osa constituency in 2019 said: ”You know what else these countries struggle with? Top ten for drug abuse and alcohol abuse. There is a correlation between depression, anxiety and substance abuse. People are searching for meaning, even people that have success and money. When you don’t find the reason you are here, you will look for it in the wrong places. True success can only be measured by fulfillment”.

Wizkid one of the fastest songwriters I have ever encountered -Banky W

Banky W, former co-founder of the defunct Empire Mates Entertainment(EME) has stated that Wizkid whom he signed on his label back then, is the fastest songwriter he has ever known.

Banky W made this known in a docuseries in celebration of Wizkid’s debut album “Superstar”.

In his words:” Wizkid for a long time in his life was not fortunate enough to be able to pay for studio time.He was a studio rat, so he would just go to any studio where they will let them hangout and he would hangout all day and pray for the end of the day, so that the engineer or producer would just take pity on him and say ‘come and records for 15 minutes. Because obviously, he couldn’t pay for his sessions. All day long, he would be working on hooks and melodies so that he could jump on them whenever he is given an opportunity. This has helped him in songwriting. He is one of the fastest songwriters that I have ever encountered in my life”.

Ace comedian, Alibaba also added that WIzkid did not forget his roots.

“Wizkid was not taken away from his reality, his roots. He grew up in Ojuelegba area.He owned it.It’s not like he started growing and felt like, let me belong to V.I or let me belong to any other place. Even if he lived in any other place, he still did not disconnect from his root.It showed in his songs”.

Wizkid snagged his first-ever Grammy award last March for his role in ‘Brown Skin Girl’, a song by Beyonce.

#Twitterban: Nigerian government out of touch with plight of young people- Banky W

The indefinite suspension of Twitter in Nigeria by the Federal Government has aroused reactions from Nigerian celebrities.

TheNewsGuru had earlier reported that the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension of Twitter activities on Friday via an official statement on the micro-blogging site.

In his reaction, Nigerian singer and filmmaker, Banky W stated that the federal government is out of touch with the plight of young people.

“They can’t stop kidnapping, armed robbery and terrorism. The country is as unsafe as ever, yet they can seize passports and block bank accounts of peaceful protesters. They ban cryptocurrency, they ban Twitter. FG is completely out of touch with the plight of young people.

“The retirement age in Nigeria is 65. What if we decide not to vote for anyone over the age of 65? Regardless of party. If you’ll be over 65 at the time of elections, we won’t vote for you. It’ll at least eliminate an entire group that has had enough opportunities to fix this mess

“We did #NotTooYoungToRun. Can we consider doing #NowToOldToRule? If you’re over 65, you’ve had your chance to help fix this mess. Isn’t it time for that entire generation to rest? The Nigerian Government should not be a retirement home. It’s worth a thought. It’s worth a shot”.

    I sold CDs in barbershops-Banky W

Banky W, Nigerian singer has recounted how he and his colleagues sold CDs across barbershops.

The politician cum entertainer made this known during the second part of an episode of The Waterbrook series titled ‘Final Say Faith’.

The 40-year-old movie star revealed that they toured saloons and barbershops in his neighborhood.

According to him, they sold CDs from the trunk of their car after creating a record label from the comfort of his dormitory room.

“When I was moving, I was in Yankee. I felt a leaning that I have to come back to do this music thing. I spoke to my best friend Tunde. It took us back to when we first started music. We didn’t have connections or money,” he said.

“We started a record label in my dorm room. The label was not worth the piece of paper that we used to register it. Myself, Tunde, and Tini, the three of us said, ‘nobody will come and save us in this dorm room.’

“We recorded the music and went to every hair salon, and barbershop in the neighborhood and begged the owners to allow us to sing for their customers. Sometimes, they would throw us out. Other times they allowed us.

“I would tell them we had CDs for sale in the trunk of our car. That’s how EME that has done endorsement deals signed artistes, being a stepping stone. That what led me to what we’ve done in music, movies, food.”

Banky W said it was in the process that they hit gold with EME, a record label he said was a stepping stone.

“I’m in the food business now. Even though it wasn’t in line with purpose, if I didn’t do that then, I won’t be here. Use every arrow. The opportunity of a lifetime must be used within the lifetime of that opportunity,” he stated.

“Opportunities don’t last forever. Mike Edwards from Big Brother is my friend, we’ve worked together. Sometimes you see Mike doing his workout. He has muscles in places I didn’t know muscles existed.

“When I was young, I probably had the same potential to be an athlete. I’m 40 years old now. That opportunity is gone. There’s nothing I can do to compete with Mike. Opportunities have a window, a lifetime.”
