Barca CEO and former president arrested by police

Former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has been arrested following a raid on the club’s offices on Monday.

Barca CEO Oscar Grau and Roman Gómez Ponti, the club’s head of legal, were also arrested.

It comes amid the continued investigation into ‘BarcaGate’, in which club officials were accused of launching a smear campaign against current and former players who were critical of the club and then-president Bartomeu, The Mirror reports.

He and his board of directors resigned last year in controversy.

Local authorities from Mossos d’Esquadra entered Barcelona’s stadium in a search and seize operation, the club confirmed.

Police have confirmed that arrests have been made and while they aren’t declaring who, multiple sources in Spain have declared Bartomeu and Grau are among those, as well as Gomez Ponti and Jaume Masferrer, Bartomeu’s former right-hand man.

Xavi ready to coach Barca – Cazorla

Al Sadd star Santi Cazorla is convinced coach Xavi will eventually take charge of Barcelona.

Cazorla admits there’s constantly rumours about Xavi leaving Al Sadd for the Blaugrana.

He told RAC1: “Here there are a lot of rumours surrounding Xavi with the election, but he is very calm.

“It is clear that his dream is to be a Barça coach. I don’t know if it’s for now, tomorrow or in five years, but he doesn’t hide it.

“He is ready to coach Barça. He knows the club perfectly. He knows how things can be for him and what he has to endure at a club like Barça. And in terms of technical capacities, he is perfectly prepared.”

  • Arsenal chief to make new swap bid for Barca fullback

Arsenal chief to make new swap bid for Barca fullback

Arsenal chief Edu is weighing up a move for Barcelona fullback Junior Firpo.

The Mirror says Arsenal could play the uncertainty over Hector Bellerin’s future to their advantage by completing Edu’s dream swap deal.

The Gunners’ full-back is reportedly ready to call time on his spell in North London, as CBS Sports claim Bellerin will quit Arsenal at the end of the season, with two clubs leading the race for his signature.

Paris-Saint Germain are in the running having expressed an interest in the Spaniard last summer, while a return to his former club Barcelona is also a possibility.

The latter would appeal to Arsenal’s technical director Edu, who may use the opportunity to reignite the club’s interest in Barca’s Firpo.

Arsenal tried to sign the left-back on loan last month until the end of this campaign, but failed to agree a deal.

Their interest in the 24-year-old has not gone away, though, and Bellerin’s stance could bring both clubs back to the negotiating table.

  • Man City denies making offer for Barca star

Premier League club Manchester City say they have not made any offer to Lionel Messi, with the Barcelona forward’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The Argentine superstar is free to speak to non-Spanish clubs and has been linked with several leading European sides, with City and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain seen as the leading candidates.

The Sun reported City offered the 33-year-old a five-year deal worth £600m last summer but have now presented the Barca captain with a new package of £430m, but a club spokesperson has told Goal that the speculation is not true and that there have been no talks.

It is also reported that City want Messi on a two-year deal at the Etihad with a 12-month option before another two seasons in the MLS at sister club New York City.

  • Barca rejected signing Mbappe in 2017

Barca rejected signing Mbappe in 2017

La Liga giant Barcelona rejected the chance to sign PSG star Kylian Mbappe in 2017, it has been revealed.

Junior Minguella, the son of experienced agent Josep Maria Minguella, told Cadena COPE how Mbappe was an option for Barca.

“I can confirm it,” he said. “More now than ever because a director confirmed it and gave his version of the story, it’s totally true. My father knew that Neymar had an agreement with PSG and was going there. The directors didn’t know or didn’t believe it. They didn’t want to take nay moves before he left.

“Then at the moment Neymar left, the staff and president had doubts over who to sign, and they thought Dembele fitted the team better than Mbappe.

“Some even said Mbappe was a ghost, who hadn’t achieved anything. We had a deal for 130m euros plus 25m in incentives, Mbappe would get 10-16m euros net.”

  • Mbappe hat-trick helps PSG thrash Barca, Liverpool win at RB Leipzig

Mbappe hat-trick helps PSG thrash Barca, Liverpool win at RB Leipzig

A hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe helped Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) hammer FC Barcelona 4-1 at the Camp Nou on Tuesday in the 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool, just like PSG, are also on course for the quarter-finals of the competition, after having won 2-0 away to RB Leipzig.

The elite tournament resumed with the first knock-out ties of the last 16 in the continental competition played during the coronavirus pandemic.

Barca hosted PSG behind closed doors while RB Leipzig welcomed Liverpool to Budapest as Germany is currently not allowing non-citizens/residents to enter the country from the UK.

Lionel Messi’s penalty kick gave FC Barcelona the lead but Mbappe struck either side of half-time.

Moise Kean added another and Mbappe completed his hat-trick with a superb finish as PSG took control of the tie that was a repeat of the sensational encounter at this stage in 2017.

On that occasion, FC Barcelona overturned a 4-0 first leg deficit 6-1 at home and must now launch a similar comeback attempt – this time in Paris on March 10.

That is when six-time champions Liverpool, last winners in 2019, will expect to finish the job against RB Leipzig at Anfield.

Second half goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane earned them a deserved win in the duel between German bosses Juergen Klopp and Julian Nagelsmann in the Hungarian capital.

On Wednesday, FC Porto meet Juventus and Sevilla host Borussia Dortmund while holders Bayern Munich resume away to Lazio next Tuesday.

Neymar was influential in turning the tie with PSG in FC Barcelona’s favour four years ago but the Brazilian star missed the match with his former club due to injury.

But PSG – with 22-year-old Mbappe almost untouchable – scarcely missed him.

Mbappe’s quick-feet in the penalty box after a nice flick from Marco Verrati levelled the match.

His clinical finish when Marc-Andre ter Stegen could only parry a 65th minute cross put PSG in front.

Ter Stegen had previously denied Mbappe on several occasions and did so again before Kean was given space at a free-kick to head home unchallenged with 20 minutes left.

Barca tried to rally but left themselves exposed and Mbappe curled into the top corner after Julian Draxler raced clear on the counter to cap a glorious night for Maurico Pochettino.

He had coached PSG only since early this year.

PSG, who beat RB Leipzig in the semi-finals last season, were superior even when Messi gave the hosts the lead from the penalty kick spot. That was after Layvin Kurzawa accidentally clipped Frenkie de Jong in the 27th minute.

RB Leipzig too are up against it, having come within inches of the opener at the Puskas Arena when Dani Olmo headed off the post in just two minutes.

Liverpool slowly took control and had already threatened several times before RB Leipzig imploded with two horrific errors early in the second half.

Marcel Sabitzer’s pass inadvertently released Salah to finish well.

And when Dayot Upamecano – who confirmed a move to Bayern Munich this week – fluffed a 58th minute clearance, Mane showed no mercy.

Liverpool, who are riddled with defensive problems and injuries all season, are out of contention to retain their Premier League title but at least one more round in the Champions League looks likely.

Barca gave me everything – PSG midfielder

PSG midfielder Rafinha is ready to return to Barcelona tonight for UEFA Champions League showdown.

PSG meet Barca in the Champions League round 16 first-leg on Tuesday at the Nou Camp, with Rafinha set to face his former club.

He told Le Parisian: “Barça? They gave me everything. I learned almost everything at the Barça training center.

“I have a lot of affection for this period. I grew up in Barcelona, I lived there for 13 years, I also feel Catalan. I learned as a footballer with Barça but also as a person in this city.

“For me, Barça will always be special.”

I’ll follow Messi wherever he goes – Cafu

Brazil World Cup winner Cafu says he’ll follow Lionel Messi wherever he plays next season.

Messi’s contract at Barca expires in June.

Cafu said, “It doesn’t matter where he goes, I will be with him. If he stays at Barça, I would encourage him.

“If he goes to another team, I would encourage him as well. Even if he retires. I don’t know where Lionel Messi’s fate is, but I do know that he will be followed wherever he goes.

“I recommend that he continues to bring joy to people, to fans and to be happy, whether at Barca or elsewhere.”

  • Stop asking me about Suarez – Koeman

Stop asking me about Suarez – Koeman

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has dismissed questions about Luis Suarez.

Suarez has starred for LaLiga leaders Atletico Madrid ever since he was pushed out of Barcelona this summer.

Suarez was again brought up in Friday’s press conference, with the player that Koeman shipped off to Atletico Madrid in the summer now the joint-top scorer of LaLiga Santander

“I don’t like to answer these questions,” the coach replied.

“He’s a great player, but we took the decision that we took.

“If you ask me every time he scores…”

  • PSG a good option for Messi – Rivaldo

PSG a good option for Messi – Rivaldo

Barcelona great Rivaldo says PSG would be a good destination for Lionel Messi.

PSG are just one of the clubs interested in Messi’s services and Rivaldo sees it as a good fit.

“They would be a good option for him, especially as the club has an Argentine manager in Mauricio Pochettino,” Rivaldo said in a column for Betfair.

“Messi would also be reunited with his friend Neymar, so he has a few reasons to say ‘yes’ to the club if a proposal comes.

“In Ligue 1, he should shine without problems as it is a weaker league than LaLiga [Santander] and the Premier League, and it would also allow him to manage his fitness throughout the season for the big Champions League matches.”

As well as the football side of the argument, Rivaldo also made the case for PSG’s financial power being a reason to join.

“Financially, few clubs can pay him better than PSG,” RIvaldo added.

“So I think it would be a great option for Messi.

“French football would also benefit a lot from his presence in terms of media and sponsorship.”
