Barca, Real Madrid, Juventus could still be sanctioned – UEFA

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus could yet face sanctions for refusing to back down in their idea of forming a Super League.

The three were the only founding clubs not to renounce the widely-derided Super League after the breakaway project’s collapse in April 2021.

Last month, a Madrid court lifted precautionary measures preventing UEFA from punishing the trio, who have continued to voice their backing for a new competition.

Their insistence was in spite of the withdrawals of the other nine founding members.

The UEFA president hinted on Saturday that sanctions against the trio could be on the horizon and hit out at the “incredible arrogance” of the clubs.

Ceferin, who assumed his post in 2016 after succeeding Michel Platini, also said the clubs were free to do whatever they liked.

He however warned that they would not be allowed to participate in UEFA competitions if the venture was revived.

“Of course it’s possible [to sanction the clubs], but let’s see what happens,” Ceferin said.

“The only ‘hello’ UEFA got from them came from the courts, as they tried to challenge us everywhere.

“We never said that they couldn’t play their own competition, because they can if they want. But it’s funny that these were the clubs that first registered in the UEFA Champions League.

“If they play other tournaments, they cannot play in our competitions. That is not a monopoly. They can create their own UEFA and do what they think is right.

“I showed them a lot of respect in the past. I don’t want to talk about the president of Juventus [Andrea Agnelli], but my relationship with him was very open and honest.

“I never said this before, but I invited the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, to Nyon before it all happened to talk about future competitions.

“He called off the meeting with a text message just 24 hours earlier because of ‘a basketball-related event’. With [former Barca president Josep Maria] Bartomeu I never spoke.

“Everyone had a chance to speak, and we’ve never been pushy or arrogant.

“The announcement of that project was an act of incredible arrogance on their part, and that’s probably why they don’t want to communicate with UEFA.

“But that has never influenced how we treat them in our tournaments.

“You can see it in their successes: Real Madrid will play in the Champions League final and Barca will play in the Women’s Champions League.

“That is a clear sign that our competitions are healthy, fair and correct.

“Football must remain open to all, and we will not back down one millimetre to defend the European sporting model.

“What they want is theirs, and they are free to get together and do what they want.”

Amid their refusal to back down on their support for the Super League, Real Madrid will appear in their 17th European Cup/Champions League final later this month.

That was after a remarkable 6-5 aggregate triumph over Manchester City in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, UEFA has faced criticism for proposed Champions League reforms which could allow two qualification places to be awarded based on historical performances.

Ceferin said the demise of the Super League made (it) clear that continental football must remain open to all.

“I was glad it happened because it was always up in the air,” he added.

“When it finally came out, we ended once and for all with this nonsense that football can be bought, that football is only for the elite, only for the rich.

    “That will never happen.

“People warned me that the same people killed basketball, but I told them, ‘Basketball is not football. It will never be football.’

“Football is part of our history. It is part of our traditions.”

Xavi reacts to Barca midfielder joining Man Utd

Barcelona manager, Xavi has ruled out any possibility that Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong will be joining Manchester United.

Xavi believes De Jong must continue at Barcelona to become one of the best midfielders in the world.

Reports had emerged that De Jong had been linked with a move to the Premier League side, with his former manager Erik ten Hag taking charge at Old Trafford this summer.

However, Xavi has hinted that he is happy with De Jong and wants him to remain at Camp Nou.

Asked about speculations linking De Jong to Man United, Xavi was quoted by Goal as saying: “I have not talked with him about his future.

“He is playing at a very good level and has to continue here – he can be one of the best midfielders in the world for years to come.

“If it were up to me, I would continue here for many more years. He is very important and can mark an era here. He has to score, assist, and he has to be the protagonist.”

De Jong’s contract with Blaugrana will expire in 2026.

The former Ajax star has scored four times in 42 appearances across competitions for Barcelona this season.

  • La Liga: Rayo Vallecano shock Barca at Camp Nou

La Liga: Rayo Vallecano shock Barca at Camp Nou

FC Barcelona suffered a shock 0-1 home loss to Rayo Vallecano to tell Real Madrid they can step up plans for another Spanish LaLiga title party.

This was a third consecutive home loss for the Catalans, only the second time that FC Barcelona have suffered such a fate in their history.

Alvaro Garcia’s early strike made the difference between the teams.

It means Real Madrid’s lead at the top is 15 points with five games remaining, putting Los Blancos on the brink of being crowned champions.

That will be confirmed if Carlo Ancelotti’s team avoid defeat to Espanyol next Saturday.

Xavi’s FC Barcelona have also slackened their grip on second place with this setback.

Rayo Vallecano, sitting 14th in LaLiga before their arrival at Camp Nou, snatched a seventh-minute lead.

That was when Garcia made a smart run into space to meet a chipped pass from Isi Palazon and fire sharply into the bottom right corner.

Jordi Alba curled a shot which flicked wide off the post as FC Barcelona chased an equaliser.

Then Gavi wanted a penalty kick when he slumped to the turf under a nothing challenge from Santiago Comesana.

Referee Isidro Diaz de Mera Escuderos was unimpressed and booked coach Xavi for taking his complaints too far.

A clever floated shot from Gavi hit the crossbar shortly before half-time, and although Ferran Torres lobbed the ball in from the rebound, he had been in an offside position.

Jordi Alba had a shot deflected over as FC Barcelona pushed early in the second half, but the home side were horribly flat.

Torres and Frenkie de Jong were replaced by Memphis Depay and Nico Gonzalez as Xavi looked to inject some energy.

Depay had a close-range shot blocked by Nikola Maras, and the Dutch striker saw a stinging 20-yard strike punched over the bar by Stole Dimitrievski, but the equaliser would not come.

To some, the result could mean that Barca are on the slide

FC Barcelona had won their last seven home games against Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga, and were seeking eight in a row against them for the first time in the competition.

But this was poor from them.

This is a bad time of the season to get stuck in a rut.

Camp Nou defeats to Cadiz in LaLiga and Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League have been followed by another aberration.

FC Barcelona led the shot count 17-3 in this game but in spite of playing 14 minutes of second-half stoppage time, they could not produce a clinical finish.

Rayo Vallecano, who came up through the Segunda Division play-offs last term, have become the fourth promoted team to win both of their games against FC Barcelona in a LaLiga campaign.

They are also the first since UD Salamanca in 1997/1998.

They have also improved their record when leading at half-time in LaLiga this season to Win 8, Draw 1 and Lose 0.

Of all on the night,it was a famous one for Andoni Iraola.

After his team’s 1-0 win at home in October, Iraola has become the first head coach to beat FC Barcelona home and away in his first season in LaLiga.

That is the first since Quique Hernandez for Hercules in the 1996/1997 campaign.

The home win in the autumn was a result that was followed by FC Barcelona sacking Ronald Koeman, leading to Xavi’s appointment.

FC Barcelona will now have home advantage again next Sunday when Real Mallorca visit Camp Nou.

As for Rayo Vallecano, they are also back on duty next Sunday, hosting Real Sociedad.

Barca expected to beat Eintracht Frankfurt in style – Xavi

Barcelona coach Xavi admits his team is expected to defeat Eintracht Frankfurt in second-leg of their Europa League quarterfinal encounter.

On reaching the final, Xavi said, “For the whole group, a step forward to achieve one of the objectives of the season. We wanted to win the Champions League but circumstances have led us to play this one and we are excited.

“Yesterday we watched it from home. It must hurt us not to be in the Champions League and that’s what we work for. It would be an important step for the whole group to win tomorrow. Show ourselves that we can compete in Europe.

“But this is Barca. We have the obligation to win and play well. It’s not worth it for us to win 1-0 and in the 90th minute. We are Barca. It’s about being excellent in everything we do. There is no comparison. Barça is the most difficult and demanding club. We have an obligation to win by playing well. This is the difficult thing in football. That is why this is the most difficult club in the world.”

  • Barca coach Xavi waves away Rudiger transfer talk

Barca coach Xavi waves away Rudiger transfer talk

Xavi refused to be drawn on talk of FC Barcelona signing Chelsea defender Antonio Rüdiger ahead of Sunday’s LaLiga showdown with Sevilla.

Sahr Senesie, RÜdiger’s half-brother and agent, was this week pictured entering a hotel in Barcelona with Blaugrana director of football Mateu Alemany and technical director Jordi Cruyff.

The Germany centre-back is out of contract at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season and has been free to talk to clubs from overseas since January.

But Barca head coach Xavi is focused on masterminding a win at Camp Nou this weekend that would move his side above Sevilla into second place, rather than potential new recruits.

He said during a press conference on Saturday: “I’m not going to talk about signings, we have a lot at stake.

“It is true that Mateu, Jordi and the board are working for next season, but our [job] is to go for second place tomorrow.”

Ousmane Dembele is in a similar situation to Rüdiger, with his Barca deal expiring at the conclusion of the campaign.

Xavi praised the France winger’s professionalism amid uncertainty over his future and says only the 24-year-old can decide where he will be playing next season.

He said: “I haven’t had a single complaint about Dembele at a professional level since I arrived. He’s a footballer of many levels, well worked.

“I still think he can be the best in his position. It’s up to him, the renewal depends on him.”

Meanwhile, the Barca coach is optimistic Gavi and Ronald Araujo, who are both under contract until the end of next season, will sign new deals.

“The club cannot afford to lose Gavi and Araujo. They are very important to us and I show it with the minutes I give them. I am optimistic and I hope a solution is reached,” Xavi said.

Barca are unbeaten in 12 matches and have won five consecutive games in the Spanish top-flight.

The last of the wins was a 4-0 Clasico thrashing of Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu before the international break.

The Catalan giants are 12 points adrift of Los Blancos with a game in hand and Xavi has demanded they maintain their momentum at the expense of Sevilla.

“The message is to continue, not to let our guard down, not to relax,” he said.

“The Bernabeu was good, but the goals are to be as high as possible in the league and win the Europa League.”

The coach added: “The break could have been good for us. It is a final sprint in which we have to grit our teeth.”

Luuk de Jong will not face his parent club after testing positive for coronavirus, while Sergino Dest, Samuel Umtiti, Ansu Fati and Sergi Roberto are ruled out due to injury.

Leeds winger Raphinha agrees five-year deal with Barca

Leeds winger Raphinha has found an agreement on personal terms with Barcelona.

The Brazilian right-sided flyer is hoping to complete a move to a big club this summer.

According to Sport, Raphinha has agreed on a five-year contract with the Catalan giants.

However, Leeds are not in the mood to sell Raphinha on the cheap.

He has a contract until 2024, which means any move this summer would be on their terms.

  • Chelsea captain agrees to make Barca move

Chelsea captain agrees to make Barca move

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta is ready to make a switch to La Liga side Barcelona.

Football Insider claims the versatile defender, 32, has snubbed several offers from the Blues to extend his deal past the end of this season.

And Azpilicueta has now reached an ‘agreement in principle’ to swap Stamford Bridge for the Nou Camp in July.

The Spain international has been at Chelsea for ten years, winning numerous trophies including two titles and last year’s Champions League.

But the opportunity to see out his final years back home with another top European side has been too good to turn down.

Lionel Messi unhappy at PSG – Dani Alves

Barcelona fullback Daniel Alves expects Lionel Messi to leave PSG this summer.

Alves is a former PSG player, himself, and won everything in the game alongside Messi at Barca.

He told ESPM, “For me, Leo isn’t enjoying himself, for me he’s out of place there.

“I’m going to say something that Leo always told me: ‘where are you going to be better than here?’ And I proved it.

“And hopefully he can come back, if he comes, let him come here with me.”

On the El Clasico against Real Madrid on Sunday night, Alves also said: “Now we can beat anyone, but knowing that we have to put all these things together and not lose our style, which is what makes us all different.”

  • Again, Ronald Koeman slams Barca president Laporta

Again, Ronald Koeman slams Barca president Laporta

Former Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has taken a new swipe at president Joan Laporta.

Koeman has recalled how he was axed earlier this season.

He said, “How did Laporta fire me? One thing that hurt me was that the players were sitting behind us on the plane, while I had to go sit next to him.

“He is always saying it, that I am a legend of the club… Prove it then!

“I immediately understood that I was not Laporta’s coach. He didn’t choose me. They didn’t give me the same time they are giving Xavi. Then he told me a thousand times that he would never choose him because he lacked experience. However, I am happy that the team is better now, I also see (Frenkie) De Jong more involved in the game.”

Chelsea defender completes second Barca medical

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen was undergoing the second part of his Barcelona medical yesterday.

Christensen, 25, passed the first phase of his medical last week, reports Sport.

His agent will arrive in Barcelona between now and Thursday to formally complete the Bosman agreement.

Christensen’s talks with Chelsea broke down earlier this season, opening the door for Barca to swoop.

Bayern Munich had also been courting the Dane’s signature, but Xavi and Co have won the race after upping their offer last week.

Premier League teams were also interested, although Christensen reportedly snubbed them out of respect for Chelsea.
