Ronald Koeman reacts after Barcelona sacking

Sacked Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has ducked questions about his future plans.

The Dutchman was fired by Barca president Joan Laporta while on their flight together back from defeat to Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday night.

Koeman, 58, was approached by AD for a reaction to his firing, but he was reluctant to speak.

“I don’t speak to the press. I’m just going to take a good rest for a while now,” he said.

The Dutchman’s agent is now entering talks with Barca about a payoff for the remainder of his contract.

Xavi responds to Barca questions after Al Sadd meeting

Al Sadd have informed Xavi he can leave for Barcelona so long as his buyout clause is met.

It’s understood Xavi’s contract carries a €1m release clause should Barca come calling.

Meanwhile, Marca reports Xavi met with the leaders of the Qatar club on Thursday, intimating his desire to taken the newly vacant job at the Camp Nou, and the meeting went well with the Al-Sadd board making clear they would allow him to leave for a buyout fee.

The negotiating of that fee isn’t thought to be a problem, although the Qatari club are determined to keep him until after November 3, which would prevent him from taking charge of Los Cules’ Champions League meeting with Dynamo Kiev.

“I’m focused on my work with Al-Sadd,” Xavi explained in a press conference. “I cannot talk about anything else.”

From the start of the international break, Xavi would be free to make concrete his agreement with the Catalan giants and officially take charge, and it’s expected that negotiations will be closed in the coming days.

La Liga: Barcelona sack Koeman after Rayo Vallecano defeat

La Liga club Barcelona have announced the sacking of coach Ronald Koeman.

The board has relieved the Dutchman of his duties as head coach on Wednesday following the 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

After months of speculation regarding his future, the defeat to Real Madrid in Sunday’s Clasico coupled with the loss away at Rayo on Wednesday proved to be the final straw.

Despite Koeman being a club legend himself during his playing days, a disappointing end to the 2020/21 LaLiga Santander campaign, coupled with an even worse start to the current season – where Barcelona find themselves ninth in the table – convinced the board that the Dutchman would not be able to turn the tide.

In a statement on Wednesday evening, Barca announced:

“FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first team coach. The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva.

“FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the Club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.”

I want to enjoy my time left at Barca – Koeman

Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman says he wants to “enjoy the time I have left” as Blaugrana manager as he faces mounting pressure following the defeat by Real Madrid in El Clasico.

Barca were beaten 2-1 at home by their biggest rivals on Sunday, which leaves them ninth in La Liga.

They travel to in-form Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday and Koeman says his side “cannot afford back-to-back losses”.

“I’m a grown up and I know how these things work,” Koeman said on Tuesday.

“I want to enjoy the time that I have left, if it is eight years, six months, one year, or some weeks. I think it’s important that we win this game in Madrid, we cannot afford back-to-back losses.”

I’ll retire rather than be Barca reserve – Pique

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique says he won’t outstay his welcome at Camp Nou.

The veteran insists he’d rather retire than become a regular reserve.

He told El Pais: “I will retire at Barça. That is for sure. What I will not accept is to retire as a substitute. See, if it’s the last three months of a season and it’s my turn, well, well. But a whole year on the bench? No, I don’t feel like it.”

Pique admits he still doesn’t understand why Lionel Messi was allowed to leave for PSG. Pique was among senior players who had agreed to major pay-cuts to help the club fund Messi’s new contract.

He continued: “I understand numbers but the Fair Play issue is difficult for me to understand. I don’t know. Me, I feel with the president and it is clear yes I have to reach an agreement because otherwise you cannot sign up a transfer. And I think that if Leo was renewed the numbers would be very complicated … I don’t know if it was feasible or not with everyone making a monumental effort.

    “I don’t have the information.”

La Liga: David Alaba scores first Madrid goal in Barca win

Real Madrid beat Barcelona in a new-look El Clasico to go top of La Liga and leave Ronald Koeman’s side down in eighth in the table.

It was the first Clasico without Barca icon Lionel Messi or Real legend Sergio Ramos – who both joined Paris St-Germain in the summer – since 2004.

David Alaba started and finished a counter attack for the first and Lucas Vazquez got a second in added time.

Sergio Aguero scored his first Barca goal but it was almost the last kick.

Alaba’s goal was the best of the game. The former Bayern Munich defender won the ball from Barca striker Memphis Depay on the edge of his box before starting a counter-attack.

He finished it off by running onto Rodrygo’s pass before slamming a shot across home keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen into the far corner.

It was his first goal for Real Madrid, who he joined in the summer, on his El Clasico debut.

The final two goals came in injury time with Vazquez tapping in after Marco Asensio’s shot was saved by Ter Stegen.

Substitute Aguero buried Sergino Dest’s cross, in what was only Barcelona’s second shot on target, but the final whistle went seconds later.

  • My idea is to coach Barca – Xavi

My idea is to coach Barca – Xavi

Al Sadd coach Xavi says his ambition to return to Barcelona remains.

Xavi famously turned down Barca 18 months ago, convinced he wasn’t ready for the job at the time.

However, the former Blaugrana captain now says: “My idea is to coach Barcelona.

“I have never hidden it, it is my goal and my dream. I don’t know if it will happen or not, if they will need me or not, but at the moment I am happy to be in Al-Sadd and very proud of it.

“If an offer comes in, it will be evaluated and then we will try to decide, but at the moment I am very happy here.”

  • I still don’t know who wanted me out at Barca – Suarez

I still don’t know who wanted me out at Barca – Suarez

Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez has revisited his bitter split from La Liga giant Barcelona 18 months ago.

The former Barca star admits the way he was treated still burns.

He recalled to ESPN: “I regret the way it turned out. As I explained, if you have a player who has been at the club for ten years, the third top scorer, the president, or the coach, could have warned me. We could have met one day to have the situation explained to me. It would have been better, it would have been totally different.

“But a week before, the media had already announced: ‘They will tell Luis Suárez when he leaves’. Suárez this, Suárez that. So I already knew that. And when the coach called me to tell me that I was no longer in his plans, it hurt me.

“I tried to terminate my contract, because the club didn’t want me anymore and I was at an age where no one wanted to pay for me. Everything was ready for the termination of the contract and I was going to sign with Atlético. And the coach said: ‘I have already told the president that if he does not make up his mind tomorrow, Sunday, against Villarreal, I am counting on you’. I said, ‘How can you count on me if I wasn’t in your plans?’ (And he replied) ‘You weren’t, but now you are’.

“I did not understand if I was not in the plans of the coach, or if it was the board of directors who did not want me anymore.”

Suarez would eventually leave for Atletico and subsequently help them win last season’s LaLiga title.

He said: “At the end of the season, I distinguished myself with Atlético, scoring the winning goal and winning the Spanish championship. This is priceless, I thank Atlético for having opened its doors to me.”

  • I’ll run for Barca president again – Bartomeu

I’ll run for Barca president again – Bartomeu

Former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu regrets not being more aggressive in the transfer market in 2019.

The ex-president admits to wishing he had started to change things as soon as the Blaugrana fell to their humiliating Champions League defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

“Not assessing things after the Liverpool loss was a mistake,” Bartomeu confessed to Esport3 “We had to have a generational change.

“I listened to the players and I was wrong. We were at our limit financially and then the pandemic caught us all by surprise.”

Bartomeu oversaw a number of transfers in his last few years at the club that didn’t exactly go to plan, as well as a failed attempt to sign Kylian Mbappe.

“His [Mbappe’s] signing was on the table,” Bartomeu said, before passing the blame, “but the coaches preferred [Ousmane] Dembele because they wanted a player who could open up the pitch.

“Some of those we signed haven’t met expectations. There were players who cost a lot of money, but these things happen in football. When these two players [Dembele and Philippe Coutinho] were signed, they were applauded by everyone.

“Coutinho came because [Andres] Iniesta was leaving. He was the Premier League’s best player. Dembele came because of Neymar’s exit.

“As for [Antoine] Griezmann, the coaches asked for him and insisted on his signing for a year, they thought he was essential to bring in because Luis Suarez was injured a lot that season. He was a different forward, a global star, and a team player.”

Bartomeu has also announced he intends to again run for the presidency.

“I will present myself for elections again,” Bartomeu said. “I have spent 12 seasons with the club, with [Joan] Laporta, [Sandro] Rosell and then as president myself.”

  • The downfall of Barcelona F.C: why los blaugraunas should be bankrupt

The downfall of Barcelona F.C: why los blaugraunas should be bankrupt

They’re one of the most famous names in world football, with a history full of glorious moments and some of the greatest players ever to play the game. Their nickname is even ‘Més que un club’ (more than a club), which sums up what they mean to the millions of their fans.

Yet the last few years have been some of the darkest in the club’s existence. Persistent financial problems have led to the sale of Leo Messi, their greatest ever player, and a freefall into vast amounts of debt.

The 2020-21 financial year saw the club record the biggest losses in their history, with chief executive Ferran Reverter saying that they were ‘technically bankrupt’. But how did this happen to one of the most prestigious names in the game, and can they get out this mess?

A debt of over €1 billion

Barcelona’s debt is incredible even by the standards of football’s money-obsessed world. Already owing close to €1 billion, in the financial year of 2020-21, they amassed further borrowings of €481 million, the most in the club’s history.

The officials coming into the club pointed to a culture where money didn’t seem to matter. Instead of cutting back on its costs, the previous administration spent more money in a bid to put things right, something that a person with problem gambling issues might do instead of a professional football club.

But how did their debt get so high? Well, there are three main factors: transfers, wages and the pandemic.

The two standout transfers are surely Ousmane Dembélé and Philippe Coutinho. Both signed in the 2017-2018 season, their combined transfer figures came to around €300 million, an eye-watering figure for any pair of players. To make things worse, both have suffered from extensive injury problems, particularly Coutinho who was even jeered by Barça fans on occasions.

It doesn’t end there. Antoine Griezmann for €120 million – who they recently agreed to sell to Atlético Madrid for a third of that – played well enough but did nowhere near enough to justify his incredible cost; while the likes of Malcolm, Arda Turan and Andre Gomes all failed to live up to their price tags.

With big transfers come big wages. Sports website The Athletic calculated their salary bill to be €520 million per season at its peak in 2019. This included star player Messi’s astronomical wages, thought to be around €140 million alone.

When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in early 2020, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. The club lost out on millions matchday revenue, in terms of ticket sales, merchandise and food and drink. While most big clubs had reserves to fall back on, Barça had very little. A world crisis made a club crisis even worse, which led to the club’s new management taking drastic action.

    The sale of a legend

When Leo Messi declared his desire to stay at Barça forever in 2019, most fans believed him – and why wouldn’t they? The club had just won their 26th La Liga title, and there was very little public talk of their financial worries.

Fast forward 18 months, and the picture was very different. Barça were on the brink of the unthinkable – selling their greatest-ever player to a Champions League rival, PSG.

The deal sent a shockwave through not just the club, but the city, too. It meant that for the first time since 2003, the club would be facing a season without their icon.

No amount of money could compensate for that – which was just as well, Barça didn’t get any money for Messi: they just saved his eye-watering wages.

How Barça survived and their road to recovery

So, with Barcelona FC in such a horrific financial situation – how on earth are they not bankrupt? Clubs have gone under with much lower levels of debt in the past.

The simple answer is the club’s status as a ‘registered association’. Unlike a limited company, it’s not possible to buy shares in the club, only memberships. Barça, then, are not subject to the same insolvency measures as a Public Limited Company (Plc). Even the new chairman Joan Laporta said that if the club had been a Plc, it would have been dissolved a while ago.

Another measure that has secured their short-term future is a restructuring of the club’s debt – the driving force behind the Messi sale. It also means that Barça have to commit to a much lower wage ceiling, thought to be around €160 million – a little over a third of their previous figure. Existing players have agreed to drastic pay cuts, and new signings must fit into the structure.

The club have also radically altered their player recruitment policy. Gone are the hundred-million-Euro signings to be replaced with a focus on La Masia, the club’s youth academy that has been a conveyor belt of talent in the past. It may not be a bad idea: 18-year-old Pedri was one of the star players at Euro 2020; Gavi, almost two years younger, has just made his debut for the national team; Riqui Puig, Ilaix Moriba and Oscar Mingueza are other recent graduates.

Joan Laporta put the academy at the centre of his plans for the next ten years. It might be difficult for Barca fans to get used to, but it looks like the only way back to the glory days of yesteryear for the Catalan club.
