Xavi resignation at Barca didn’t surprise me – Fabregas

Former Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas says he wasn’t surprised by Xavi’s resignation announcement.

Xavi will leave the job at the end of the season.

Cesc told Radio Cataluyna: “Xavi’s farewell didn’t surprise me, I’ve been in football for many years and I’ve seen everything. I know Xavi as a person and a player, but not as a coach.

“He is a very positive, happy person, he always wants the best, to win… He always believes in what he does. I believed that Barça needed a person like that. Many young people have grown up with him; the moment it’s not easy but Barça is one of the three biggest clubs in the world and the pressure is high.”

The Como chief was asked about coaching Barca in the future and said: “In the end it’s something you can’t know. I think that first I have to grow, take steps forward… That’s why I’m happy to be where I am, because I don’t have very high pressure.

“Football it changes, the dynamics change and the work you do day after day counts.”

Real thumped Barca 4-1 on Sunday night.

Deco later said: “We must congratulate Real Madrid, because they played a spectacular game. We have not managed to nullify their strengths: the depth of Vinicius, Rodrygo… they had this danger but we have not neutralised them.

“With 2-1 on the scoreboard, it seemed like we could improve, but 3-1 has hurt us quite a bit.

“It’s a title we wanted to win. It’s a tough defeat, 4-1, and we couldn’t fight. But we have to continue and think about the Cup. There is nothing else to do. We have to continue.”

Asked about Xavi’s future, he added: “The question doesn’t make sense. It’s a final. This is not the time to talk about Xavi’s future.

“He has the confidence of the president, the sports management… It’s a tough defeat that has to be discussed, but it doesn’t change anything.”

“There is still room for improvement and I still have time, but I would prefer to be there as soon as possible.

“Being decisive is usually linked to goals and assists. For my position it is different. I want to be important in another way. I can still take steps forward and I’m still not where I want to be.

“We have a talented squad but we haven’t been consistent enough. I don’t know the exact reasons behind that.”

‘We have made history’ – Girona coach on thrashing Barca

Girona coach Michel declared his players “have made history” after their 4-2 win at Barcelona.

The result confirmed Girona’s title credentials.

Michel said: “We are saved, with 41 points. We have reached the figure before. We have made history, it is a game to remember. It has been a great game. Any fan will have seen two teams that had the intention of winning.

“We have done a great favor to the LaLiga, playing face to face and hurting the rival. We have defended at some moments, but it is to be happy. I’m very happy. We have made Barça run backwards. We did it. And if we do it with these players we can do it with anyone. This is entering another dimension.

“I’m happy with the performance. I don’t know if we are capable of holding up to the level of Barça, Real and Atlético throughout the season, but the performance makes me happy. The players are making history. Today football fans are a little bit of Girona. Many people will say: ‘these guys play football well.’

“I don’t know if we can win LaLiga.

“It is not our goal, it is the pressure from Barça, I have told Xavi.”

Important to leave my comfort zone – Gundogan on City exit

Ilkay Gundogan insists he has no regrets joining Barcelona.

The former Manchester City captain has been critical of his teammates at times this season.

But he told Die Welt: “From a sporting point of view, things are going well, but we still need to improve in many aspects. That’s why they bought me. The coach told me to pass on my experience to the boys. Even if everything doesn’t work perfectly yet due to the language, I can convey certain things to my young teammates just with my behavior.

“Barcelona trusts La Masía players. There are also foreigners like me who provide stability. The club has recently lost personalities, such as Lionel Messi, who marked an era. Success will not come overnight, it is a process always in collaboration with the fans.

“It’s a completely new challenge. After seven years at Manchester City with Pep Guardiola, I thought it was important to get out of my comfort zone again. Not only on a football level, but also on a personal level.”

La Liga: Barcelona, Sevilla eye Super Eagles Midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi

Spanish clubsides, Barcelona and Sevilla have joined the race to sign Nigerian midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi on free next summer.

Findings show that the Los Nervionense are in the process of rebuilding their Midfield and Nigeria’s Ndidi has been penciled down.

However, there are reports that Ndidi would be given a paycut to star for Sevilla for season 2024/2025.

Meanwhile, Ndidi and Leicester are yet to agree terms on a new deal and the 26-year-old will likely leave the Foxes on the expiry of his contract.

He is judged by many to be a much better player than that of Championship standard, but he has been forced to play in England’s second tier this season after he was unable to secure a move away in the summer.

The Nigeria international has made 12 appearances in the Championship this season.

He has also played three times in the Carabao Cup this term, having previously featured in both the Premier League and Europa League in his 252 appearances for the Foxes since joining for £14m from Genk in 2017.

Other European clubsides,  Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Juventus have all had an eye on signing Ndidi and a free transfer at the end of the season would be the perfect deal for Sevilla.

  • Alleged Tax Fraud: Shakira faces jail term in Spain

Alleged Tax Fraud: Shakira faces jail term in Spain

Grammy Award winning  Colombian music sensation, Shakira is facing jail terms in Barcelona, Spain over alleged tax fraud.

The 46-year old singer is being accused of defrauding the Spanish state of 14.5 million euros ($15.7 million) in income earned between 2012 and 2014.

Shakira denies the charges, maintaining that she only moved to Spain full-time in 2015.

According to Spanish authorities, she spent more than half of that period in Spain and should have paid taxes in the country, claiming that Shakira utilized a network of companies based in tax havens to avoid paying taxes in Spain.

The singer’s lawyer argues that until 2014, she led a “nomadic life,” earning most of her income from international tours, stating that she permanently moved to Barcelona just before the birth of her second son in January 2015.

Shakira also shed more light on the allegations in an interview she had with Elle magazine in 2022, Shakira asserted,

“I’ve paid everything they claimed I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit. So, as of today, I owe zero to them.”

Shakira’s trial, scheduled to run until December 14, commenced today at a Barcelona court. The court is set to hear from nearly 120 witnesses.

The prosecution seeks a jail term of eight years and two months, along with a fine of nearly 24 million euros ($24 million) for the singer.

While Shakira is expected to testify during the opening session, she may request permission to be absent from the remaining hearings.

The trial is anticipated to shed light on details of her private life, with Spanish prosecutors conducting a meticulous investigation, including interviews with neighbours, tracking social media activity, and examining payments at local establishments.

The global music icon’s financial affairs were previously brought into the spotlight in the “Pandora Papers” leak in October 2021, revealing details related to her residence in the Bahamas.

Shakira’s trial follows Spain’s crackdown on tax evasion by celebrities, including football stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The outcome of this high-profile case will be closely watched, given the recent legal actions against prominent figures for similar financial matters in the country.

  • I benefited from Guardiola’s idea at Barca – Cucurella

I benefited from Guardiola’s idea at Barca – Cucurella

Chelsea fullback Marc Cucurella has revealed he learnt a lot from Pep Guardiola’s philosophy during his time at FC Barcelona.

The Manchester City manager, Guardiola, and Cucurella came through the La Masia system at the Spanish club.

“He changed the mentality at Barcelona,” Cucurella told Sky Sports.

“Before Guardiola, Barcelona were a good team and when he came, they changed the philosophy, they played amazing football – I think one of the best teams in the history of football. They played at another level.

“The philosophy in the Barcelona academy changed because all the time, they play the same style, the same formation with the same mentality and I think this is very good. We can see they do the same here at Manchester City.

“The team plays really well and they have good things to show; every year they change some things to try to improve on this.

“I don’t have a relationship with him, I’ve seen him at some events and I can speak a little bit with him. He’s a very good person.

“Not for me personally but in my academy stage, they showed me a lot because they changed their mentality and a lot of things I can learn are from his ideas that he brought to Barcelona,” Cucurella added.
