  • Nollywood producers used funds from streaming platforms to buy houses, cars – Basketmouth

Nollywood producers used funds from streaming platforms to buy houses, cars – Basketmouth

Veteran Nigerian comedian cum film-maker, Basketmouth has alleged that Nollywood producers mismanaged funds provided by global streaming platforms, using most of it to fund their personal lifestyle.

Basketmouth made this known during a recent interview with Arise TV, where he accused many producers of using only 10 percent of the allotted budget for film production while diverting the rest.

He claimed streaming platforms eventually started paying actors directly to bypass dishonest producers.

The standup comedian added that producers, however, allegedly found a way around it by demanding actors return half of their pay.

He said, “When the streaming platforms came in, they gave money to these producers, and I’ll tell you point blank: these producers would take the money $1.5 million or whatever they give them and use about 10% of that money to make the movie.

“Even to the point where the streaming platforms stepped in and said, ‘You know what? We are going to be paying the actors directly,’ these guys would still go behind and tell the actors to pay half of that money back to them. You can verify the information anywhere.”

He argued that the fraudulent practice has taken a serious toll on the quality of Nollywood films.

“So, when you do that and expect your movie to be 100%, it can’t. It’s impossible.  But these guys? They’ll cut, buy houses, buy cars. And that’s why when you see our movies, some of our epic movies look like stage plays,” he added.

  • How Funke Akindele stopped picking my calls after sharing my movie idea – Basketmouth

How Funke Akindele stopped picking my calls after sharing my movie idea – Basketmouth

Nigerian comedian, actor and filmmaker Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has narrated how popular Nollywood actress cum film maker, Funke Akindele stopped picking his calls while creating his first major cinema project, ‘A Ghetto Love Story’.

Basketmouth spoke about the experience during a recent interview with Arise TV, where he opened up about the struggles he faced whilst delving into the details of his filmmaking journey.

According to the veteran comedian, Funke Akindele was his initial choice, he further recounted their first conversation in August, which he said was filled with excitement and promise.

He stated that what followed was a series of unreturned calls, unanswered texts, leading to a long silence.

He averred that the actress might have been caught up in her own film work or simply unavailable due to other commitments.

Following the setback, he decided to reach out to another film maker, Mo Abudu and she responded with enthusiasm and immediately embraced his vision, stepping in to fill the gap and help bring ‘A Ghetto Love Story’ to life.

He said: “With collaborations with filmmakers, it was dramatic. When I started calling all these like Mo Abudu and the rest of them, you know, I had a plan. I was going to start with Funke Akindele, and just run it all through.

“But when I called Funke, she was excited and that was in August, and then the next thing, she never picked up my calls again. But she was making a movie, maybe she was busy, or her phone is on silent, or maybe the phone got spoilt. But yeah, I hope she pick up or responds to my messages”.

“I’ve sent over like 25 messages or whatever, but she didn’t respond. So I had to change the whole plan and re-strategize. I had to go to Mo, this and that, but the rest of them came through.

“I called Mo and normally she doesn’t do stuff like that, but she jumped on it. Sooner or later, I believe that filmmakers in Nigeria will get to understand that collaboration is the new competition”.

Why I stopped being MC at Nigerian weddings – Basketmouth spills

Veteran standup comedian, Bright Okpocha better known as Basketmouth has opened up on the reason why he stopped being the master of ceremonies (MC) at wedding events.

According to the 46-year-old entertainer during a chat with journalists at the premiere of his first feature film ‘A Ghetto Love Story,‘ his decision was a necessary sacrifice to preserve his artistic integrity.

“Hosting events as an MC feels like adulterating the art,” he said

The comedian turn film maker clarified that he only stopped being MC at private gigs like weddings, not entirely quitting duties as host.

He added that if invited to a private gig, “I will be doing standup comedy, not the MC”.

He continued saying, “The only thing I have stopped is private gigs like weddings and all. It is a sacrifice I have to make because I do standup comedy, that is what I do. I did not enter this industry to be an MC of a wedding and all that.

“So I felt like I was adulterating the art, I felt bad about it and I had to stop. So if I am doing a private gig, I be doing standup comedy, not the MC.

“Let me just do my 30 minutes and bounce, but not as the MC of any event. I cannot do it anymore, that is like I am cheating on my craft. I am losing a lot of money but it is not about the money now.”

“Then the third year, it seemed like people were spreading more rumours about the feud till it lasted that long. It lasted too long”.

AY emphasised the feud’s impact on younger comedians. “Our feud caused some damages because in a way we were like providers for people,” he said.

Basketmouth added: “Most times people swear allegiance by default. So when we were not on good terms some people made it their business”.

“…A comedian called me to tell me AY reached out to him for a gig and was asking if it was okay to work with AY. I told him it was okay and I was happy it happened because people would know it was okay to work for either of us because it was about more money and opportunities.

“There was a guy who picked a side and came at me. Now that we are cool, he would be confused. It is collaboration over competition.”
