NDLEA: D-General’s arrest waste of tax payers’ money – Basketmouth

Comedian, Basketmouth, has berated operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA, for arresting skit maker, Sunday Joshua aka D-General, over what he described as a ”pinch of weed”.

NDLEA operatives stormed DGeneral’s home in Lagos on Wednesday January 12, and arrested him. A video of the operatives manhandling him after they invaded his home to arrest him was shared online.

In a statement released, NDLEA said illicit drugs including 200 sachets of 225mg Tramadol and 1.5kilograms of cannabis sativa were recovered from the skit makers house.

In a video shared on his Instastories, Basketmouth said Nigeria has bigger issues to contend with than arresting the skit maker.

He said the NDLEA operatives know those who carry weed and that they should have ”small shame” and stop embarrassing people.

Basketmouth said: “When I saw the news I thought NDLEA saw like 300kg of drugs in the comedian’s house or he’ll be a drug dealer but I saw just a small quantity that can just roll two or three sticks.

“I’m thinking how the NDLEA feel after the raid, you should have small shame you know people carrying weed in large quantities.

“We have bigger problems to worry about, these boys need those things to smoke because headlines in Nigeria recently can make you take cocaine. This country you need it to normalize yourself.

“All these things the boys are doing is therapeutic. I’m not supporting the use of marijuana but I’m saying you guys are wasting taxpayers’ money to arrest the likes of Degeneral with small ‘Igbo’.”

“Most people do not know this but music was my first love, then TV before comedy,” he wrote.

“I had to do it backwards as the timing wasn’t right & I hadn’t met a producer that can see music the way I see it……in its true form & color. God bless the day I met you.”

TheNewsGuru recalls that Basketmouth recently teamed up with 2Baba and Blaqbonez for the delivery of ‘Trouble,’ his much anticipated single.

In an interview, Basketmouth stated that his children do not attend his comedy shows.

” They don’t see Basketmouth at all. The only person they see is Bright Okpocha, their father. The only time they experience Basketmouth is when we go out and people want to take pictures with me. They (my children) don’t really come to my shows, and even if they do, they stay in a hotel because of the kind of ‘rubbish’ I say on stage some times.

However, there are times an element of Basketmouth pops out and I see them laughing so hard. I try as much as possible to separate myself from my work before entering the house”.

Popular Nigerian Comedian and filmmaker, Basketmouth has opened up on feud with Ayo Makun, AKA AY.

Basketmouth in a Black Box interview with media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, noted that he fell out with AY because the comedian messed with loyalty.

He further explained that AY has apologized and they have made peace.

“I’d have stayed where the competition is. I still do standup comedy but not with great energy because I’m targeting all-around entertainment now. My competition is me. There’s nothing [like a feud] between AY and I.

“He came in my space; messed with loyalty by saying something to my lawyer Magnus that I told him in private. It was nothing but it was enough to cause a rift and have me put up the walls. We made peace and he apologised. I have no single problem with AY as claimed. We don’t talk.

“We made peace and he apologised,” he said.

Also, in the interview, Basketmouth played down the speculation that he fell out with AY because he took his former protégé, Bovi from him.

I did not snatch Bovi. Bovi is not a girl,” the comedian said before recounting that he met Bovi for the first time at a comedy event in Abuja, and from there, they became friends.

Asked why he is no longer close to Bovi, he said :“Hustle, everybody is hustling; Bovi stepped into a new world. He is busy, and he does not have my time. Me, I’m hustling,” Basketmouth said.

I am a failed rapper- Basketmouth

Popular comedian, Basketmouth has averred that he is a failed rapper. The comedian spoke of his outset in the entertainment industry during a chat with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, TV host.

Baskemouth noted that he accepted his his failed rap career after being booed while performing during a campus show at the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

“Those guys are wicked. They came at us. My guys walked off. I came back, told DJ to stop the music,” he said.

“That was when the loud criticism started. They were hitting me and I was getting back at them, using their bodily features as diss material. It was rowdy at first but the hall became quiet. All of a sudden, people started laughing.

“When I was done, some guy walked up to me and said, ‘man, you get basket mouth o’ and walked away. I told my guys my name would be just that if I were to do comedy. My colleague advised me to leave the rap thing.

“My brother felt bad since I was in a music group with him. But he didn’t tell me. He supported me instead. Now that I think of it, I feel bad too. Bayo Adekeye became my manager. That was when I decided to quit rap.

“I was popular in UNIBEN as the only comedian that was kicking it. When I left, they started seeing me on TV.”

Basketmouth stated he had worked on projects with top singers like Wizkid but didn’t release them for fear of criticism.

“I decided to create ‘Papa Benji’, a sitcom. I needed music for the beer palour [scenes]. I didn’t want to start asking people for their songs. I used the opportunity to create ‘Yabasi’, a blend of highlife and hip hop,” he added.

“We had three weeks to create the album and one to mix. We pulled it off and everything was done in one month.

“I’m a failed rapper. Yes, I failed as a rapper. But I didn’t fail because it was a case of [not delivering]. On stage, I was funny, but all my friends were funny so I didn’t know it was a gift. I thought it was a normal thing,” he said.

Like Twitter, FG will soon find excuses to ban other social media platforms- Basketmouth

Comedian and filmmaker, Bright Okpocha a.k.a Basketmouth has said the federal government will soon find excuses to also ban Facebook and Instagram following the suspension of Twitter’s operations in Nigeria.

The outspoken entertainer on Sunday said the ongoing move to control social media will not end with the suspension of Twitter.

“Do you know that our leaders are the most straightforward in the world? They’ve been dropping hints about what’s happening now before but we didn’t pay attention then,” he said in a video on his Instagram page.
“This whole thing with not end with the ban on Twitter. Soon, they would claim that IPOB is using Instagram for their meeting and the next thing you’ll hear is that it has been banned.

“Then the government would shift attention to Facebook that it’s what bandits use to track people’s identities before kidnapping them and thereafter also ban it.

“At that point, they would have banned everything. Twitter is just the first. They’ll soon find excuses to also ban the other social media platforms including TikTok. Their plan is to ban everything so that we won’t be able to communicate with the outside world again.”

Why INEC may not conduct election in 2023 – Basketmouth

Popular comedian, Basketmouth has warned that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC may not conduct the 2023 general election if hoodlums continue burning the electoral body’s offices across the country.

TheNewsGuru recalls that in the past few weeks, INEC has recorded fire incidences in its offices across Nigeria.

Two of its offices in Ebonyi State was recently burnt down.

Fire incidents were recorded in Borno, Ebonyi, Jigawa, Kano, Ondo, Plateau and Rivers, Abuja was also affected.

It was learned that while 11 offices were burnt by hoodlums, eight others were gutted under mysterious circumstances or by electrical faults.

But speaking against the recent trend, Basketmouth noted that the burning of INEC offices could give President Muhammadu Buhari’s government an excuse to stay longer if the commission is unable to conduct an election in 2023.

In a video shared on his Instagram page, Basketmouth said, “I’ve been reading the news and seen reports of INEC offices razed by fire. These guys are definitely upset with the way things are and burning the offices.

“But what if INEC says due to burnt offices and materials they can’t conduct election in 2023 that means this government will continue to rule and your vex will last for a long time.

“With the way I’m looking at this country, fuel will increase drastically next year.

“If you keep burning the offices, you will give them an excuse to stay in power.”

Why my album isn’t about bum shaking -Basketmouth

Revered Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth has revealed why he approached Flavour and Phyno before starting work on his debut album, ‘Yabasi.’

The creative entrepreneur disclosed during an Instagram live session with participants of the Tony Elumelu Foundation.

According to Basketmouth, ‘Yabasi,’ a highlife album released in November 2020, was a purpose-made music project that had all tracks produced by Duktor Sett.

“As long as you are partnering with the right person you can hardly go wrong. When I was creating the Yabasi album, I wasn’t selfish with the process, yes I rap but I didn’t hear myself on the album, I wasn’t there.

The first people I went to talk to about the album were Flavour and Phyno, this is what I did, I didn’t do it over the phone, I went to visit them and I told them a story, told them what I wanted to do, I made them understand the end goal, purpose and when they agreed I started talking to other people,” the producer of ‘My Flatmates’ said.

Speaking further, Basketmouth said, “I called a much as I could and I was trying to create a force, an army but beyond the fact that these guys might want to do it for me based on relationship and love I need to give them something that will interest them so the first thing I did was to get the right producer, Duktor Sett that can give the right beats.”

On why he collaborated with over eight established music acts, he said, “I needed numbers as well, I needed people that had a good following and because of the kind of music I was making if you listen to the Yabasi album closely you will find out that we didn’t talk about shaking your bum and all those things, I am not saying it is wrong but I was like we do not have an album that is clean, that you can play with the family, that the young and old can listen to so when I was selecting these guys and I didn’t select them based on friendship I selected them based on who can deliver the goods.”
