2027: Our party not distracted – APC to Bauchi Governor

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says the party is not distracted by 2027 politicking. Lagos APC Spokesman, Seye Oladejo, made this remark in a statement on Friday.

Oladejo was reacting to the recent remarks made by Bauchi Gov. Bala Mohammed, in which he accused the APC and the Federal Government of prioritising politics over governance ahead of the 2027 elections.

Describing the accusation as a misplaced outburst from a frustrated opposition, Oladejo said President Bola Tinubu and the APC remained concentrated on its governance agenda.

“Tinubu, the APC remains fully focused on its governance agenda — with bold reforms in economy, security, infrastructure, and institutional development.

“This administration has chosen to face the tough challenges of nation-building head-on, while some in the opposition are busy grandstanding in the media and chasing shadows.

“We also urge Gov. Mohammed to look to Lagos as an example of what consistent, visionary, and people-centred governance under the APC can achieve.

“Governance is not a press statement; it is the hard work of delivering real results.

“The APC is not distracted by 2027. When the time for elections comes, our performance will be our campaign,” Oladejo said.

He said that while the party respected the right of opposition leaders to express their views, it found it both ironic and regrettable that such a statement would come from Mohammed.

He urged the governor to direct his energy towards governance of the state rather than toward baseless attacks on the APC and the Federal Government.

“We encourage Gov. Mohammed to channel his energy into addressing the pressing developmental needs of the good people of Bauchi State.

Police call for calm amidst soldier’s death in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command has called on residents to remain calm after a soldier was shot dead in the State.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Ahmed Wakil, made the call on behalf of the Commissioner of Police in the state, Sani Omolori-Aliyu.

Omolori-Aliyu stated that inter-agency security forces had initiated thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident that led to the death of the soldier.

He recalled how a blogger narrated the incident in which a member of the Nigerian Army attached to the 33 Artillery Brigade was fatally shot by a mobile police inspector, allegedly on illegal duty.

He said the incident happened while the soldier attempted to intercept a truck suspected to be transporting solid minerals from an illegal mining site in Futuk, Alkaleri Local Government Area of the state.

“The blogger also said that the incident occurred at about 7:50 p.m.on August 25, when personnel from the 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi, purportedly stopped a truck with the registration number: Gombe 676-BLG at a checkpoint in Futuk Village.

“The report added that the truck driver refused to comply, prompting the Guard Commander, Master Warrant Officer, Ali Haruna, now deceased, to pursue the vehicle with his team on motorbikes until they managed to intercept it.

“And upon stopping the truck, Insp. Yusuf Ibrahim, a mobile police officer, exited his vehicle and opened fire on the guard commander, striking him in the abdomen.

“The blogger added that the soldiers at the scene overpowered the policeman and disarmed him.

”The injured officer was transported to Gombe Specialist Hospital for urgent medical attention but tragically succumbed to the gunshot wound,” Omolori-Aliyu added.

He, however, stated that preliminary investigations revealed that the truck was associated with Guruje Mining Company Limited and ZURFI Company Limited, which possessed valid legal licences in Gwana, Alkaleri LGA.

He added that the authorisation pertained to the extraction of lead and zinc minerals, which was obtained from the Mining Cadastre Office on May 12, 2023.

He also stated that the companies had complied with all the mining operational protocols of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act of 2007 and possessed a certificate of incorporation pursuant to the Companies and Allied Matters Act of 2020.

“The mobile police officers attached to these companies were formally requested and approved to provide security for the safety of expatriate workers and fulfil other security responsibilities associated with the company. Insp. Ibrahim was among those assigned to this duty.

“The company successfully extracted a substantial quantity of lead and zinc minerals, which were proposed for export, and relevant fees as revenue paid to the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, referenced by RRR code 3212-7561-4841.

“The state police command has constituted an investigation team of experienced detectives in collaboration with the Nigerian Army Military Police and are tasked with collecting and assessing all relevant information surrounding the incident’s remote and immediate causes,” Omolori-Aliyu stated.

Nigerian police officer shoots soldier dead in Bauchi

An officer of the Nigeria Police Force was arrested after the fatal shooting of a soldier in Futuk, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG)eports that the incident, which occurred on Monday evening, sparked tension in the community and prompted a swift joint investigation by both the Nigerian Army and the Police Force.

The Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 33 Artillery Brigade Bauchi, Atang Hallet Solomon, confirmed the development, saying the officer had been taken into custody.

“The case is currently under joint investigation by the Police and the Army. Discussions are ongoing between the two agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and to prevent escalation,” Hallet told Daily Trust.

Local hunters and vigilantes in Futuk told newsmen that the clash stemmed from a dispute involving a truck allegedly linked to a Chinese mining company.

The truck, reportedly loaded with minerals from the Yalo mining site, was intercepted after its driver ignored an order to stop at a military checkpoint.

Soldiers from the 33 Artillery Brigade pursued and halted the vehicle near a bridge.

Eyewitnesses said a heated argument broke out between the commanding officer of the soldiers and a Mobile Police (MOPOL) officer assigned to escort the truck.

“During the altercation, the policeman raised his rifle and shot the army officer in the back,” a witness said.

TNG learnt that the shooting triggered panic in Futuk, with traders hurriedly closing shops for fear of reprisals. The truck driver reportedly fled the scene in the confusion.

Local government officials, however, commended the soldiers for showing restraint.

Instead of retaliating, they disarmed the MOPOL officer, arrested both him and the driver, and transferred them to Bauchi for further action.

The wounded soldier was rushed to a hospital in Gombe but later died from his injuries. His remains have been deposited in the morgue, with burial arrangements ongoing in line with military tradition.

The police officer remains in custody, while the impounded truck is being held as evidence.

Hunters and vigilantes alleged that the minerals were illegally extracted and hinted that the policeman may have been on an unlawful escort mission.

They argued that the refusal of the truck to stop at a checkpoint, the decision of a trained officer to shoot a soldier, and the driver’s escape all raised suspicions that require a “thorough and transparent investigation.”

According to Daily Trust, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police met with the Commander of the 33 Artillery Brigade, Brig.-Gen. U.J. Simon, to douse tension and ensure the matter is handled without sparking inter-agency conflict.

  • NAFDAC warns against breast milk substitutes marketing

NAFDAC warns against breast milk substitutes marketing

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting and protecting breastfeeding through effective advocacy and strict monitoring of Breast Milk Substitutes (BMS).

Mr Hamis Yahya, the NAFDAC State Coordinator, Bauchi State office, said this during a press conference on Thursday to mark the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week.

“NAFDAC is mandated to advocate for and monitor compliance with the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes.

“Nigeria is a signatory to this international code, and NAFDAC plays a critical role in its enforcement,” he said.

Yahya emphasised the agency’s promotion of exclusive breastfeeding for infants from birth to six months, discouraging the use of infant formula or substitutes unless medically necessary and prescribed by a qualified health professional.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that every child receives breast milk exclusively during their first six months of life, after which appropriate complementary feeding should be introduced,” he said.

He explained that the approach ensured optimal nutrition and supported the healthy development of Nigerian infants.

Yahya outlined the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, noting that colostrum, the first milk, contained vital antibodies that strengthened a baby’s immune system and protected against childhood illnesses.

“Breast milk supports brain development, physical growth, and provides all the nutrients a baby needs in the first six months.

“For mothers, it reduces post-delivery bleeding, aids recovery, strengthens the mother-child bond, and acts as a natural contraceptive method for child spacing,” he added.

He also warned that bottle-feeding posed risks in low-resource settings, where water quality and sanitation might be poor.

Speaking on NAFDAC’s role, Yahya said the agency actively monitored BMS Code compliance across public and private institutions and raised concerns over unethical marketing practices by some manufacturers and distributors.

“We conduct advocacy visits to hospitals, orphanages, pharmacies, and supermarkets to ensure that no one violated the Code. We’re also supporting the establishment of breastfeeding-friendly spaces in workplaces and public facilities.”

While advocacy and monitoring are ongoing, Yahya warned that enforcement measures would follow.

“Some companies offer branded gifts, free samples, or promotional items to mothers and healthcare workers during antenatal visits.

“These practices directly violate the Code and mislead mothers into thinking substitutes are equal to or better than breast milk, which is dangerous and unacceptable,” he stated.

He stressed that the BMS Code had been fully gazetted into Nigerian law, and violators, including healthcare providers and institutions, would face sanctions.

Yahya also revealed that the Bauchi NAFDAC office planned to launch state-wide awareness campaigns across print and electronic media to further protect public health.
