Yusuf Abdullahi, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Bauchi, says no fewer than eight persons lost their lives in a road accident that occurred in Bauchi on Saturday.

Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident in Bauchi on Sunday, said the accident which involved an Opel Vectra car with plate number AA 954 GYD and one Tipper Mercedes Benz with number plate NIN 279 SA, happened in Goltukurwa village along Dass-Bauchi road at 9:30 pm.

The Sector Commander, who said that it took personnel of the Corps about seven minutes to arrive at the scene to clear the site, attributed the accident to overloading, speed violation and head-on-collision.

He explained that nine people were involved in the crash, comprising two males, six females and a male child.

Abdullahi, however, revealed that all the eight passengers in the Opel Vectra car which ran into the tipper, lost their lives while only the driver of the tipper, whose name was simply identified as Abubakar Mohammed was unscathed.

The FRSC boss said that his personnel had cleared the obstructions at the crash scene, adding that the corpses of the deceased have also been taken to the General Hospital, Dass.

“This is the December period and we have always been sensitising motorists in the state about the dangers associated with over speeding and overloading.

“I want to use this opportunity to plead with motorists to always be conscious of all traffic rules and regulations as well as weather conditions before embarking on their journeys.

“They should also remember that only the living souls, not the dead, would live to celebrate the Christmas and new year festivities,” he stated.

Devil has taken over Bauchi roads — FRSC

Bauchi State Sector Command of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) says the “devil has taken over roads in the state”.

Sector Commander, Yusuf Abdullahi, made the declaration while lamenting that within the 30 days of the month of November, not less than 35 people were killed in various auto accidents across the state.

Yusuf Abdullahi who was addressing members of the Special Marshall of the Sector at the FRSC Base during their end of the year meeting said that, “I am very sorry to say, but the fact is that, the devil has taken over our roads in Bauchi State. We really need to stand up and do something to reclaim the roads”.

He said that, “the situation is so terrible, in the month of November, it was a case of one death per day because we had not less than 35 deaths from accidents across the state. This is worrisome and disturbing, something has to be done quickly”.

Yusuf Abdullahi added that, “on the Bauchi – Kano road, we had accidents that claimed over 15 lives involving lone accidents as well a Keke NAPEP which had a lone accident before an oncoming Sharon ran into it” .

A visibly worried Sector Commander also said that, “on the Bauchi – Jos highway, we had a few head on collision accidents involving mass transit buses which claimed not less than 15 lives with some of them burnt to ashes”.

He lamented that, “All the efforts of the Sector to solicit for support from individuals in the state on how to check the accidents has proved abortive. We had a stakeholders meeting on the need for collaboration but it is a pity that no favorable response is forthcoming”.

Yusuf Abdullahi also picked the Darazo – Dukku – Gombe road as another bad spot particularly the bridge before Dukku which he said has failed and is now death trap for motorists plying the road saying however that, “the Sector Command was able to get some empty drums from the FERMA office which were sandfilled and placed strategically to serve as a caution to the road users”.

He then called on members of the Special Marshall to always collaborate with the Regular Marshall stressing that, “all the departments of the Road Corps are working for one goal – reduce road crashes, avoid deaths through accidents that are caused by negligence of the road users”.

“He is not a governor that is actually ruling or governing you, he is a governor who is serving you,” he said.

Abubakar also commended the state House of Assembly for its continued support to the executive , despite the fact that it’s being controlled by an opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“It is a working opposition party. In other words, the development of the state is far more important to them than the differences in political beliefs.

“Mr Speaker, I want you to convey my appreciation to members of the state assembly for the cooperation you have been giving to the governor and I believe you will continue to give him,” Abubakar said.

The former vice president also appreciated the state governor and the people of Bauchi state for inviting him to commission the road as well as naming it after him, and called on all and sundry in the state to keep supporting the state government.

He added that their support would pave way for creation of more economic empowerments due to the antecedent of the governor, when he was the FCT minister under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Gumau said that the decision was reached after thorough investigation of the matter by a committee set up by the institution.

He said that Baba was a lecturer in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics while Mr Sunday was a lecturer of the Department of General Studies.

“This is the final verdict of all that has been making waves in the media concerning the issue of our staff reported on alleged case of rape.

“This issue of Abubakar Baba came up on the Aug. 4, 2021. In the rules of the Polytechnic, if an issue of this magnitude happens, the complainant has to write and immediately she wrote.

“I asked the staff to be queried.

“When we queried him, the suspect replied and the reply was not satisfactory, and we established a committee to investigate the matter thoroughly to logical conclusion.

“We did that and after the committee submitted its report, the Senior Staff Appointment and Disciplinary Committee met, invited the suspects, cross examined and we made our recommendation to the council.

“Today; the council has finally approved the dismissal of Abubakar Baba from the services of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi,” said the Rector.

  • 2023: Bauchi Senator kicks against electronic transmission of election results

Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Sen. Lawal Gumau, on Friday, kicked against moves to amend the Electoral Act to give room for electronic transmission of results ahead of 2023 General Elections.

Gumau who stated this while speaking to newsmen in Abuja said Nigeria was not ripe for electronic transmission of results .

Gumau said: “I’m not in support of electronic transmission of result. We are not ready. It is best if we are equipped and ready to secure the website that nobody can hack.

“If we say for 2023, we are going to do transmit results electronically, is it possible? Everybody knows that it is only the person with the highest number of votes that will get it.

“So results should be announced at the Polling Units and Collation Centres where applicable.

“Let us not start what we cannot do,” he said.

On the outcome of the screening of Ms Lauretta Onochie, a National Commissioner nominee for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Gumau, a member of the Senate Committee on INEC said that let justice be served.

“If the justice is that we don’t screen her, screen her our. If the justice is allow her to get the position, that is where I support.

“I like seeing myself fighting for justice whenever there is injustice. I want to be a bridge-builder so that justice must exist.

“Whether we like it or not, a national commissioner must come from south-south and it is the same President that will appoint him.

“President Buhari appointed Onochie, we can’t see Onochie as a northerner or as southerner we have to see Onochie as a presidential nominee.

“In our duties as legislators, we work with the law and not with any member’s sentiment, not with CSO’s sentiments.

“I’m supporting the law. If the law says Onochie should not go in as INEC commissioner, that is my position.”

NAN reports that the nomination of Onochie had triggered an outcry from opposition parties, the media and some Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

The CSOs had petitioned the Senate Committee on INEC, alleging that Onochie was a card-carrying member of a political party, hence not qualified to be appointed as an INEC national commissioner.
