    Low voter turnout mars Bauchi LG poll

    Low voters turnout characterised the local government election held in Bauchi State on Saturday.

    Correspondents, who monitored the exercise in Bauchi, Dass and Tafawa Balewa LGAs report that voting  commenced in most polling centres at about 11:00 am, due to the late arrival of election officials and materials.

    Voting commenced late at Junior Secondary School Gwallameji; Kofar Sarkin-Gwalameji, Sa’adu Zungur Comprehensive Secondary School, and GSS Baba-Sidi polling units amid voter apathy.

    The voters were queueing orderly and peacefully as election officials and materials arrived the venue, to facilitate smooth conduct of the exercise in most centres visited.

    It was observed that there was adequate deployment of security personnel at the centres while most of the residents were going about their normal businesses.

    A group of election monitors expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the exercise in the areas visited.

    Mr Mamman Eri, the Lead Observer, commended the voters, polling clerks and security agents for the smooth conduct of the exercise.

    Eri, who is also the Chairman, Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), led other States’ Electoral Commissioners in motoring the exercise.

    “We have gone round some polling units, the election was peaceful, people conduct themselves and the agents of political parties present at the polling units  is commendable,” Eri said.

    Bauchi constitutes LG election petition tribunals

    The Bauchi State High Court has constituted three petition tribunals and an appeal panel, to treat cases on the Aug. 17 local government councils election.

    Recall the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission had fixed August 17 for election into the 20 local government councils of the State.

    Hajiya Fatima Abubakar, Chief Registrar, Bauchi State High Court stated this at a news conference on Friday in Bauchi.

    She said the State Chief Judge, Justice Rabi Umar had sworn in the chairmen and members of the petition tribunals as well as the appeal panel on Aug. 12.

    Abubakar said the action was in tandem with the provisions of the Bauchi State Electoral Law, 2008, which empowered the Chief Judge to carry out the task.

    “Provision of the Section 60 Sub Section 2 of the Law, said an aggrieved party has 21 days within which to file his/her petition from the date of the declaration of the result.

    “For the appeal, dissatisfied parties has 14 days from the decision of the tribunal within which to file an appeal,” she said.

    According to Abubakar, the tribunal will commence sitting on Aug. 19, adding that the court would have three centres at Bauchi, Ningi and Azare.

    “With the time frame of two months for the tribunal and one month for the appeal”.

    She said the tribunals would be headed by Magistrate Garba Kundak for Bauchi North Senatorial Zone; Magistrate Isma’il Adam, Bauchi Central Senatorial Zone and Magistrate Safiya Salihu, Bauchi South Senatorial.

    While the appeal panel would be headed by Justice Mohammed Sambo.

    The statement quoted the Chief Judge, as charging members of the tribunal and the appeal panel to work with the fear of God and ensure quick disposition of matters before them.

    20 dead, many displaced as flood wreaks havoc in Jigawa, Bauchi

    The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed 16 persons killed and 3,936 houses destroyed to flood disaster.

    It said the flood also submerged 2,744 hectres of farmlands following torrential rainfalls since the commencement of the 2024 rainy season.

    The Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr Haruna Mariga, who stated this in Dutse on Wednesday, said the disaster affected 10 local government areas of the state.

    Mairiga said the deaths were as result of building collapse, drowning and canoe mishaps.

    “The disaster resulted in 16 deaths with 3,936 persons displaced while 2,744 hectares of farmlands submerged,” he said, adding that the situation might escalate due to anticipated high volume of rainfall.

    Mairiga said the agency had provided temporary shelter and distributed relief materials to the displaced persons to mitigate their sufferings.

    He listed the items to include rice, maize, maize grits, blankets, pasta, and mats.

    SEMA confirms 4 killed in Bauchi flood

    Similarly, the Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed four persons dead in recent flood disaster in the state.

    The flood also destroyed houses, submerged farmlands and washed away some sections of the Kano-Maiduguri expressway.

    Mr Masud Aliyu, the Director-General of the agency, said this in an interview on Wednesday in Bauchi.

    He said the flood affected Shira, Giade and Katagum Local Government Areas of the state, following torrential rains in the past days.

    “The flood left thousands homeless, submerged farmlands and cut-off roads, The affected roads Include Giade-Isawa, and Kano-Maiduguri expressway,” he said.

    Aliyu said the state government had mobilised contractors to repair the failed sections of the roads, to provide an alternative route for road users.

    He, therefore, urged the people to heed to the warnings by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) about impeding flood disaster.

    The collapsed section of the Kano-Maiduguri expressway had disrupted movement of goods and services in the area.

    The road links Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Borno and Yobe in  North-East.

    Bauchi shuts 39 illegal schools

    The Bauchi State Government has closed down 39 private colleges of education due to lack of registration.

    The Commissioner for Higher Education, Mrs Lydia Tsammani stated this at a news conference in Bauchi on Thursday.

    Tsammani said the affected institutions did not got the approval of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), or put in place tangible infrastructu.

    “A total of 39 colleges were found to be without anything. They are operating in primary schools and when the school closes, then the NCE programmes start with even primary and secondary school teachers as their teachers.

    “They even borrowed teachers because they don’t have anything to make them stand as a college,” she said.

    According to Tsammaani, the ministry issues a notice to unregistered colleges with approved structures, to complete their registration with six months or face sanction.

    She said that 12 colleges operating with NCCE’s approval would be allowed to continue only after they engaged qualified staff and paid their registration fees to the ministry.

    “They must ensure that they admit only qualified candidates because it was discovered that some of them are just interested in the school fees.

    “They must also ensure continuous upgrade of school facilities and equipment. Some of them are still using analogue typewriters in their offices in this digital era”.

    BASIEC fixes date to conduct LG election in Bauchi

    The Bauchi  State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) has fixed Aug. 19, 2024, for local government elections in the State.

    The Chairman of the commission, Alhaji Ahmad Makama, who disclosed this at a news conference on Tuesday in Bauchi, said all necessary arrangements have been concluded to ensure free and fair elections.

    He reiterated the commitment of the commission to conduct credible and transparent election, urging citizens to come out and vote for their preferred candidates across all parties on the election day.

    He denied any alleged rigging plan in the elections, noting that previous elections were free and fair.

    Makama said the commission had organised series of meetings with political parties, security chiefs and relevant stakeholders, as part of the election preparations.

    He urged the public to support the commission to ensure hitch-free local government elections.

    Bauchi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ahmad Aliyu Jalam has lost his life in an auto crash.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Jalam died in the ghastly motor accident that occurred on the busy Misau-Darazo highway on Saturday.

    Meanwhile, Governor Bala Mohammed has expressed his condolence to the members of his immediate family and the entire people of the State

    In a statement issued in the early hours of Sunday, Mohammed described the deceased as a dedicated public servant, whose commitment to the development and well-being of his local communities was unwavering.

    The Governor said: “During his lifetime, he championed numerous initiatives aimed at improving good governance and community relations.

    “Late Ahmed Jalam was known for his tireless work, integrity, and compassion for the people he served and his service will be remembered and cherished by all.

    “His demise is deeply felt by all and the countless individuals whose lives he touched during his lifetime.”

    Mohammed, on behalf of his family, government and the good people of the state, extended his deepest condolences to the members of the late commissioner’s family and the entire people of the state.

    He also prayed that the Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest.

    The Governor said that the late commissioner, who left behind wives and many children, would be buried on Sunday in his hometown in Dambam Local Government Area according to Islamic rites.

    Man arrested for selling 5-year-old daughter for 1.5 million

    A Bauchi based man has been apprehended by personnel of the Nigerian Police Force in Bauchi for attempting to sell his five-year-old daughter for N1.5 million.

    The suspect whose names was given  as Yusuf Umar, 49, claimed to be a staff of the Warji Local Government Council.

    Umar had already arranged to hand over the child to an unknown person, unaware that the potential buyer was an undercover police detective according to report.

    “On the 26th of May 2024, the accused to the infant 5-year-old daughter from the estranged wife in Warji LGA under the pretence that he would take her to his sister in Bauchi town

    “Unknown to the mother, he had already arranged to hand the daughter to an unknown person not knowing that he is a police detective,” the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi Auwal Mohammed said.

    According to Mohammed, the suspect was arrested in a hotel in Bauchi.

    Meanwhile, the police also arrested four members of the professional hunters’ group for their involvement in criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide after torturing a young man named Jacob Ayuba to death on allegations that he stole N150,000.

    Police nab father attempting to sell daughter for N1.5m

    The Police in Bauchi state have arrested a 49-year old father accused of attempting to sell his 5-year-old daughter for N1.5 million.

    The Commissioner of Police in the state, Auwal Muhammad, disclosed this on Thursday in Bauchi at a news conference.

    Muhammad said the suspect, who claimed to be a staff of Warji Local Government Council, was arrested for alleged child trafficking.

    According to the CP, the girl’s father went to take her from her mother, who had separated from him, on the pretext of taking her to his sister in Bauchi.

    Muhammad said that the father committed the offence on May 26, but unknown to him, the supposed buyer of the child was a police detective.

    “The defendant was arrested in a hotel in Bauchi after he bargained for N1.5 million to give up his biological daughter,” the CP said.

    According to him, the father also provided the person, who linked him to supposed buyer, with N40,000 for

    He said that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of investigation for the established offence.

    Muhammad also said that the command had arrested a suspected member of  a gang who murdered six corps members during the post presidential election violence in 2011 in Giade LGA of the state.

    The CP gave the names of the deceased corps members as; Nkwazema Anslem from Imo state, Adewumi Paul, Ekiti State, Okpokiri Obinna, Abia, Teidi Tosin, Kogi, Adewei Elliot, Bayelsa and Ukeoma Chibuzor from Imo state.

    He said that the suspect and his gang members, after the announcement of the presidential election result, armed with dangerous weapons, also stormed the Giade Divisional Police Headquarters and attacked one Rifkatu Bappa, a policewoman.

    He said that the policewoman sustained various degrees of injuries and was evacuated to Federal Medical Centre, Azare where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

    “The gang also attacked and broke into shops of traders and carted away valuables, further causing a breakdown of law and order.

    “After a manhunt for a decade, the suspect has been arrested and investigation is ongoing,” he said.

    Muhammad said that after the conclusion of investigation, the suspect would be arraigned in court.

    Bauchi govt extends palliative distribution

    Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has said that his administration would extend the palliative distribution exercise to mitigate the economic challenges being experienced by the people.

    Mohammed said the government had approved N10,000 cash award to state and local government workers to enable them to celebrate the Eid-el-Fitr in a happy mood.

    He stated this on Wednesday in Bauchi during the Eid prayer as part of the 2024 Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

    According to Mohammed, the economic situation requires collective effort between government at all levels and organisations to address, hence the extension of the palliative distribution beyond the Ramadan fast.

    He described the N10,000 Sallah gift to workers as an unprecedented move by his administration, and urged them to reciprocate the gesture through increased productivity.

    “I want to also use this opportunity to call on the Muslim faithful to restrengthen their relationship with one another and imbibe the spirit of love and forgiveness to attract Allah’s blessings,” he said.

    The prayer session was attended by thousands of worshipers including the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Development, Dr Ali Pate, Emir of Bauchi, Alh Rilwanu Adamu and top government functionaries.

    The congregation was led by the Chief Imam of Bauchi, Alh Bala Innah.

    Bauchi Speaker, Deputy resign from their positions

    The Speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly, Babayo Akuyam and his deputy, Ahmed Abdullahi, have resigned from their positions.

    Akuyam (PDP – Hardawa State Constituency), and Abdullahi (PDP – Dass State Constituency) announced their resignation at the plenary on Wednesday.

    This is to pave way for the return of the former Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman and his deputy, Jamilu Dahiru to their positions.

    The Court of Appeal, Abuja, in November 2023 sacked Sulaiman (PDP- Ningi Central State Constituency), and Dahiru (PDP – Bauchi Central State Constituency).

    The court also ordered for re-run in the March 11, 2023 general election in the constituencies.

    However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declared Suleiman and Dahiru winners of the Feb. 3 and Feb. 4, 2024 re-run election in the constuencies, respectively.

    The outgoing Speaker, Akuyam said the action was part of the agreement reached by the lawmakers to step down to enable the duo to return to their positions.

    He thanked the lawmakers and legislative staff for their support and cooperation during their stewardship of the House.

    Also speaking, Akuyam hailed the outgoing speaker and his deputy for keeping to their words.

    He also pledged to provide effective legislations for the betterment of the lives of the people.
