Transfer: Liverpool accept Bayern Munich offer for Diaz

German Bundesliga club Bayern Munich have reached a deal with Liverpool for Luis Diaz.

The Colombia international winger is moving to Bayern for €75m, says Fussball Transfers.

Liverpool have accepted Bayern’s latest offer, with only minor details needing to be ironed out.

Bayern have convinced Diaz with a massive rise on his Liverpool wages. While he has a salary of €3m at Anfield, Bayern are offering €14m-a-year.

Diaz has accepted the proposal and is now ready to move to Munich.

There is confidence inside Bayern that the transfer will be finalised in the coming days. Transfer insider Sacha Tavolieri also reports that Díaz expects the green light from the Reds to make his way to Germany.

‘A disaster’ – Alex Ferguson reveals his worst signing at Man Utd

Former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson as revealed that Owen Hargreaves is his worst signing at Old Trafford.

Speaking in his autobiographical documentary, Never Give InFerguson recalled signing Hargreaves from Bayern Munich in 2007 for €25m.

“We started to prepare an offer for Hargreaves, but I had doubts. I didn’t get a good vibe about him signing,” Ferguson revealed.

“His agent was a nice man, a lawyer. I told him that at Manchester United we could help him develop. But it turned out to be a disaster.”

Hargreaves’ time was marred by injuries as he amassed just 39 appearances in four seasons, with two goals and two assists.

“He had no confidence. He didn’t show the determination to overcome the physical challenges. It was one of the most disappointing operations of my career,” added Ferguson.

  • UCL: Inter edge out Bayern Munich to reach semis

UCL: Inter edge out Bayern Munich to reach semis

Inter Milan booked their place in the Champions League semi-finals with a thrilling draw against Bayern Munich at San Siro Stadium.

The Italian champions led 2-1 from the first leg but their advantage was wiped out by Harry Kane’s crisp, low strike early in the second half.

That goal sparked Inter into life and just nine minutes later they were in front on the night and in complete control of the tie.

First, Lautaro Martinez lashed home from six yards as the ball dropped kindly for him from a corner.

Three minutes later, another corner and this time defender Benjamin Pavard powered in a header from Hakan Calhanoglu’s delivery.

Bayern did not give up though, and with 14 minutes remaining they drew level thanks to Eric Dier’s looping back-post header from a tight angle.

Vincent Kompany’s side pushed for a third goal to force extra time, and in the fifth of six added minutes the chance came but Thomas Muller could not direct his header past Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Despite the late scare, it is Inter who progress to face Barcelona in a tantalising last-four tie.

  • Frattesi strikes late as Inter stun Bayern Munich

Frattesi strikes late as Inter stun Bayern Munich

Davide Frattesi scored an 88th-minute winner to ensure Inter Milan will take an advantage back to the San Siro after a 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-final tie, a result which ends Die Roten’s 22-match unbeaten home run in this competition.

In spite of their ever-lengthening injury list, it was a promising start for Bayern, who went close when Michael Olise shot flew wide of the post among the early exchanges. Although Inter started to get into the game more after that, they struggled to breach the staunch Bayern backline, and the best chances continued to go the way of the hosts.

Olise was causing Inter the most trouble, and it was his lay-off from Jonas Urbig’s long ball which set up Harry Kane to shoot across goal and agonisingly against the outside of the far post.

Kane’s miss initially went unpunished by Carlos Augusto, who hit the side netting at the other end just moments later, but Inter worked tirelessly to notch an opener against the run of play before the break.

Augusto’s low cross caught the Bayern defence unaware and found Marcus Thuram, who flicked the ball back for Lautaro Martínez to arrive and caress into the top corner with the outside of his boot.

Inter refused to let up following the restart, fashioning multiple chances, including a Martínez shot from an angle which was batted away by Urbig. Bayern slowed things down in response and successfully regained control, but chances remained at a premium, aside from Raphaël Guerreiro’s well-hit volley which sailed just over.

That was until a frantic final 10 minutes in which the hosts repeatedly went close, before finally hitting a poetic equaliser. Konrad Laimer brought down Joshua Kimmich’s cross and sent it back across the face of goal, where Thomas Müller – the space investigator himself – lost his marker and prodded into the open net.

Perhaps Bayern were overtaken by relief, but they totally went to sleep after the leveller and allowed Inter a stunning winner. Nicolò Barella played in Augusto, who unselfishly squared it for Frattesi to finish and silence the Allianz Arena.

The result puts Bayern’s chances of contesting the final at this ground in serious jeopardy, and history isn’t on their side given that they have never won a UCL or European Cup knockout tie after losing the first leg at home.

Things look better for Inter, who are favourites to lift both the Serie A and Coppa Italia trophies, and may have a shot at the treble if they can successfully see out the second leg.

  • UCL: Harry Kane makes history as Bayern cruise to quarter-finals

UCL: Harry Kane makes history as Bayern cruise to quarter-finals

Harry Kane made history as Bayern Munich confirmed their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with 2-0 victory against Bayer Leverkusen.

The striker’s close-range finish in the 52nd minute was his 10th in Europe this season, more than any other English player has scored in a single campaign in the competition’s history.

Bayern came into the second-leg tie with a 3-0 lead following a commanding performance at home last week, and were again the better side in Leverkusen.

Vincent Kompany’s men posed the greater threat in the first half, with Michael Olise and Kingsley Coman both firing narrowly wide.

Leverkusen needed to come out and attack after the break, but it was Bayern who put the tie beyond doubt when Patrik Schick’s attempted clearance of a Joshua Kimmich free-kick fell straight at the feet of Kane who bundled home from a few yards out.

With their star man Florian Wirtz ruled out with an ankle ligament injury, the hosts lacked invention and impact in the attacking third.

Xabi Alonso’s side were looking to become only the fifth side in Champions League history to overturn a three-goal first leg deficit, yet it took them 65 minutes to register a shot on target.

Jeremie Frimpong forced Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig into a smart low stop, before Schick headed straight at the visiting stopper moments later

Leverkusen’s desperation left more space for Bayern to exploit and Alphonso Davies took full advantage by converting Kane’s cross from close range in the 71st minute.

The England captain then spurned a good chance to add a third when he placed wide under little pressure, before he rattled the crossbar with a snap-shot on the turn. Jamal Musiala also struck the post from a tight angle with 10 minutes left after being sent away by Serge Gnabry’s pass.

Bayern will face Inter Milan in the quarter-finals after the Serie A champions defeated Feyenoord. The first leg will take place on 7/8 April with the second leg a week later.

  • Bundesliga: Harry Kane doubtful for match against Frankfurt

Bundesliga: Harry Kane doubtful for match against Frankfurt

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane is doubtful for their Bundesliga home match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday due to calf issues.

Kane was subbed off at half-time of Bayern’s Champions League last 16 play-off against Celtic on Wednesday evening. After the game, he said: “I need to get checked and see what’s exactly going on.”

Ahead of the match, he took a break before the final training session. “I wanted to take every chance to be on the pitch,” Kane said of his first-half performance.

But he and Coach Vincent Kompany realised that it would be better “to make room for another player.”

Kompany said that it was “a shame that Harry was out” and that he couldn’t yet said for how long he will be sidelined.

Alphonso Davies scored deep into stoppage-time to give Bayern a 1-1 draw, which was enough to advance to the last 16 combined with the 2-1 win in the first leg.

“We knew they would come here with high intensity, and we know we had to match that intensity, which we did,” Davies said.

Kompany added: “Of course, we want to beat our opponents by as large a margin as possible, but if that doesn’t work, then you have to work hard for the results. That’s exactly what we’ve done, and in the end, what counts is that we’ve gone through.”

A draw on Friday will set up the last 16 ties and Bayern will face either Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen or La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

Board member for sport Max Eberl said he would prefer to face Atletico Madrid because “if you’re talking about an European Cup, you would like to play internationally.”

  • Bayern Munich strike in 94th minute to end Celtic’s UCL journey

Bayern Munich strike in 94th minute to end Celtic’s UCL journey

Celtic’s Champions League adventure came to a halt in gut-wrenching fashion as Bayern Munich struck in the 94th minute to deny them a stunning victory in Germany and snatch a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Trailing 2-1 after the first leg of the play-off round at Parkhead, Celtic led when Nicolas Kuhn capitalised on Kim Min-jae’s error to give Brendan Rodgers’ side a shock lead just after the hour.

That was after a first half in which Celtic passed up four fine opportunities to score – Kuhn, Callum McGregor, and Daizen Maeda, twice, all going close – while England captain Harry Kane hit the bar before he was substituted at half-time.

Celtic would not be denied after the break, though, when Maeda burst forward and funnelled the ball to Kuhn, who took advantage of Kim’s hesitancy to slip past Manuel Neuer.

Bayern, stunned into action, pushed for a leveller. Leon Goretzka nodded wide; Joshua Kimmich forced Kasper Schmeichel into a fine save; and Leroy Sane drilled a shot just past the post.

Celtic were on the back foot, unable to get out of their own half and counter Vincent Kompany’s side, and eventually – with extra time within sight – they cracked to concede with the last kick of the game.

Michael Olise’s cross was met by Goretzka, whose header was brilliantly saved by Schmeichel. The ball dropped in front of the empty goal, and Cameron Carter-Vickers’ attempts to clear were thwarted by Alphonso Davies, who bundled over the line.

  • Tottenham agree deal to sign Bayern Munich forward

Tottenham agree deal to sign Bayern Munich forward

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal to sign France Under-21s forward Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.

The structure of the transfer is yet to be confirmed – and it is unclear if it will be a permanent or loan deal.

The 19-year-old reportedly rejected Spurs earlier this month but is now expected to move to north London.

A picture was posted by his agent Gadiri Camara on Monday appearing to show them both on board a private jet.

Tottenham beat Brentford 2-0 on Sunday at Gtech Community Stadium for their first league win in eight Premier League matches.

Ange Postecoglou’s side sit 14th in the table but are in the last 16 of the Europa League and the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

On Thursday, Tottenham play the second leg of their semi-final at Liverpool after Spurs won the first leg 1-0.

If the Tel deal is completed, it would be the club’s second in two days after they announced the signing of Austria defender Kevin Danso on loan from Ligue 1 club Lens on Sunday.

Tel had been linked with a move to Manchester United, but European football expert Julien Laurens said Postecoglou urged the striker to opt for Spurs instead.

“Ange Postecoglou spoke with Mathys Tel at length earlier today and convinced him to come to Tottenham,” said Laurens.

“Huge role played by the Spurs manager to get one of the most coveted youngsters in Europe.”

  • Bayern Munich begs PSG over nauseating banners

Bayern Munich begs PSG over nauseating banners

Bayern Munich has begged Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday over presence of banners with offensive messages aimed at the French club’s president Nasser al-Khelaifi during their Champions League clash.
PSG visited Bayern’s Allianz Arena on Tuesday and a section of the home support unveiled a banner with a profanity aimed at the “plutocratic Al-Khelaifi”.
A separate banner with a picture of Al-Khelaifi’s head crossed out was also displayed, as well as two banners reading “Minister, club owner, TV rights holder, UEFA EXCO member & ECA chairman all in one”.
Some Bayern fans also reportedly sang insulting chants about the French club itself after the match, which the hosts won 1-0.
“FC Bayern would like to apologise when its opponents and their representatives in its stadium feel personally attacked in this manner and tone and are offended as a result,” read a statement on Bayern’s website.
The club would like to make it clear that these banners were not authorised by FC Bayern and do not reflect its stance.”
“They are not in keeping with the good and long-standing relationship between the two clubs. The tone of these banners also goes against the style of FC Bayern and the respectful relationship the club has with its international partners,” the Bavarian club added.
Al-Khelaifi became president of PSG in 2011, following the acquisition of the club by Qatar Sports Investments (QSI).
The 51-year-old has also been the president of the European Club Association since April 2021, and was reelected in September of last year on a four-year mandate.
In addition, Al-Khelaifi is the chair of beIN Media Group, which holds distribution rights for various football competitions, including France’s Ligue 1 and Germany’s Bundesliga.
QSI is a subsidiary of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) — the country’s sovereign wealth fund which has assets worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
  • Who I asked about Kompany before appointment – Bayern chief

Who I asked about Kompany before appointment – Bayern chief

Bayern Munich board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admits they asked Pep Guardiola about Vincent Kompany before hiring him.

Kompany moved to Bayern this summer from Burnley, though also was former Bayern coach Guardiola’s Manchester City captain.

Rummenigge told Kicker: “Max Eberl (the sporting director) asked me to talk to him because I am very close friends with Pep.

“I told Pep that I needed an analysis that was authentic and honest. We then spoke on the phone for almost two hours. To make a long story short, he said that he was 100 percent convinced that Vincent Kompany was absolutely the right coach for Bayern.

“Sometimes fate helps you. The number of rejections that Max Eberl unfortunately had to deal with meant that we may have gotten exactly the coach we needed for this team.

“There were two decisive factors: the team likes the style of football, and so do the fans. Football should be fun. This is exactly why children play in the street. And you can see that in our team too.”
