We’re more effective than Barca – Nagelsmann

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann was pleased with their finishing for victory over Barcelona.

Bayern won Tuesday night’s Champions League 2-0 thanks to goals from Lucas Hernandez and Leroy Sane.

Nagelsmann said, “We have to be honest, in the first half we didn’t find the game and Barça created more chances for us.

“But in the second half, we played better and with more speed. We have scored goals and we have had more effectiveness than them.”

Nagelsmann was also asked about Robert Lewandowski’s performance on the night.

He added: “He has not scored and that is positive; he has been found to be dangerous. I have greeted him, but I am no longer his coach, the one who has to talk about him is Xavi.”

  • What prepared me for Barca move – Lewandowski

What prepared me for Barca move – Lewandowski

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski admits he’s loved his first weeks at the Nou Camp and playing under Pep Guardiola prepared him for the move.

Lewandowski enjoyed his signing presentation last week.

He said: “I feel like a small child who enters a huge store of new toys . What I feel in Barcelona so far is pure happiness and motivation to start this new chapter,” says the Pole, who adds that “in Munich I was missing new challenges. I won many titles and I recognize that I felt less and less intensity. I needed another challenge. A boost. A change of environment.”

Lewandowski played for former Barca coach Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich.

He also said: “Guardiola’s philosophy and his style of caring for and managing the team I think basically was Barça at Bayern Munich. Xavi is very similar to Guardiola. They were both ‘6’, they worked together. They think football in the same way. With that memory in mind, Barça was the only option for me and it was a great preparation when I was there.

“I didn’t talk to Guardiola before signing. But when I was with him at Bayern it was like a great preparation to get to Barça one day. All the staff were Spanish, there were eight Spanish players. During that period I had a very good relationship with Thiago and Javi Martínez. Both of them congratulated me when I signed for Barça.”

  • I know I hurt many Bayern fans – Lewandowski reveals

I know I hurt many Bayern fans – Lewandowski reveals

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski admits he has hurt Bayern Munich fans and hopes he can fix his relationship with them

He is happy with his decision to sign for Barca, as he explained in a recent interview shortly after the 6-0 win over Pumas.

Lewandowski is, however, slightly sad about the manner in which things ended with Bayern Munich.

“I know that hurt a lot of fans,” he told Sport1. “I can understand that and now I just apologise for that. At that time it was important and necessary for me to make it clear that I was ready for a change.

“At the end of the day, we are all human. After 12 years in Germany, it was clear to me that my time was over. I wanted to make that clear, and of course it was not easy for Bayern to accept a sale during this phase.

“It was a difficult situation for everyone involved and we had to find the best solution. I needed this change, this move to another country, to another club. I feel like a child who has a new toy.”

Some Bayern fans yelled pro-Real Madrid slogans like ‘Hala Madrid’ at the striker as he left the Bavarian’s training camp when he returned to collect his things.

“Yes, I heard that, and I laughed,” he said. “But there were also some people shouting my name. That was really nice.

“In the last few weeks I have also met some fans in the street who have expressed their understanding for my situation and wished me all the best.”

  • I’m ready to beat Liverpool with Bayern – Mane

I’m ready to beat Liverpool with Bayern – Mane

Bayern Munich striker Sadio Mane says he won’t hesitate if he has the chance to dump Liverpool out of the Champions League this season.

Mane was part of the Reds team that cruised past the German giants in the Round of 16 back in 2019, with the Senegalese striker bagging a brace to eliminate Bayern in their own backyard. Liverpool went on to win the entire competition after beating Tottenham in the final.

But after six fruitful years at Anfield, Mane’s loyalty is now to Bayern and he says: I said maybe my favourite but now I would say second favourite goal, not my first, because he’s my teammate. No, I’m joking… Of course, I think it was a good goal, kind of a good goal. We had a good game. This is behind us. If we’re going to meet again, of course as Bayern Munich we’d beat Liverpool.”

He added: “I don’t think it’s easy. I want to be clearer. If you play for Bayern Munich,I came here to win all the games possible. Of course, to win all the trophies. Of course, before the beginning of the season our target is to win all the trophies possible. I’m here to help my teammates and to achieve our dreams.”

  • Sadio Mane shines in 8-goal thriller as Bayern Munich lift German Super Cup

Sadio Mane shines in 8-goal thriller as Bayern Munich lift German Super Cup

Sadio Mané scored on his competitive debut for new-look Bayern Munich as they overcame RB Leipzig 5-3 in thrilling fashion on Saturday to lift the German Super Cup.

Germany teenager Jamal Musiala rifled Bayern Munich ahead after RB Leipzig had failed to clear a corner-kick after 14 minutes.

Ex-Liverpool forward Mané then tapped in on the half hour from Serge Gnabry’s pass as the Bavarians quickly got used to life without new FC Barcelona signing Robert Lewandowski.

Benjamin Pavard made it three before the interval.

The season curtain-raiser between last term’s Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and the German Cup winners was held in Leipzig.

But the hosts did little to threaten the visitors until Marcel Halstenberg’s second-half header.

Gnabry and Christopher Nkunku then traded goals before Dani Olmo’s late strike for RB Leipzig made things interesting, only for Leroy Sané to score at the death.

“I’m really, really happy to win my first trophy with Bayern Munich. “I’m looking forward to more trophies,” Mané said later on.

Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann, formerly at RB Leipzig, started Senegal’s African Player of the Year while other new signings such as Matthijs de Ligt began on the bench.

RB Leipzig’s Domenico Tedesco meanwhile included Austria midfielder Konrad Laimer, heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

But left-back Angelino was missing as he looks for another club with Hoffenheim’s David Raum set to arrive.

After a minute’s silence and applause for late Germany great Uwe Seeler, the first excitement came when Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer raced out of his box.

But he failed to clear the ball, only for his defenders to mop up for him.

Bayern Munich then took the lead but it was more to do with RB Leipzig’s casual defending than anything.

After some pinball in the box, 19-year-old Musiala pounced and made no mistake.

A lot is expected of midfielder Musiala this season —- with Bayern Munich set to play without an out-and-out striker —- and he passed his audition with aplomb.

RB Leipzig, linked in the media with former Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl, thought they had soon levelled.

But Nkunku —- Bundesliga Player of the Season last term —- was rightly flagged offside.

Mané then made the headlines, even though in truth it was one of the easiest goals he will ever score, with two more efforts later on chalked off for offside.

Musiala took centre stage again by setting up Pavard on the stroke of half-time.

But RB Leipzig’s defending was again loose following the departure of Nordi Mukiele to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

Substitute Andre Silva struck the bar for RB Leipzig after the break and Halstenberg went one better with his own header from a corner-kick.

But any hopes of a comeback were quickly ended by Gnabry smashing into the roof of the net.

Nkunku’s 77th-minute penalty kick and Olmo’s fine finish came too late for the Red Bulls as Bayern Munich’s defence suddenly wilted, before Sané had the last laugh on the break.

“In the first half they simply showed their strength. They were coming from everywhere, left and right,” said RB Leipzig’s Tedesco.

“We’ve got to improve and bring the lads to a good level.”

The game clashed with the first round of the German Cup, meaning that RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich take on Ottensen and Viktoria Cologne at the end of August.

Bayern Munich kick off the Bundesliga campaign at Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo would not fit our philosophy – Bayern Munich chief

Cristiano Ronaldo would not fit our philosophy – Bayern Munich chief

Bayern Munich chief Oliver Kahn admits Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo cannot fit into the German club system.

Ronaldo has been linked with Bayern as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, now of Barcelona.

Kahn told BILD: “We discussed Cristiano’s situation internally.

“I consider him one of the best footballers in history. We came to the conclusion that, despite our admiration for Cristiano, he would not fit our philosophy at the moment.”

Kahn’s comments came in the same day as Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerez branded links with Ronaldo as “an invention”.

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich turn down C. Ronaldo’s bid

The Portuguese was offered to the LaLiga giants despite his history with their bitter rivals Real Madrid.

Ronaldo wants to leave Manchester United after just signing last season for the English club side.

The five times Ballon d’Or winner is yet to return to training and pre-season games for the Red Devils.

But the 37-year-old’s exit strategy has become increasingly desperate

Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has offered him to top European clubs but has been unable to find a buyer for the striker.

The player was rejected by Atletico Madrid because they cannot afford to fund the transfer because of their financial situation, while Real Madrid have no intention of re-signing him.

Spanish radio station Cope has outlined how Mendes even sensationally offered his client to Barcelona this summer but received a negative response.

That Ronaldo would rather play for the Catalan club next season rather than United speaks volumes of his intentions to leave.

Atletico Madrid remains a favourable option for the forward despite being the fierce rivals of former club Real Madrid. The 37-year-old has grown frustrated at United after shouldering much of the responsibility last season.

  • Lewandowski heads to Barca in deal worth N30.6bn

Lewandowski heads to Barca in deal worth N30.6bn

La Liga side, Barcelona has confirmed the final agreement to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich for €50 million ($51 million, about N30.6 billion), including add-ons, on a four-year contract.

The Poland international travelled to Miami to meet his new team-mates on Sunday, the day after Barca confirmed they had struck an agreement in principle with Bayern Munich.

Lewandowski subsequently passed his medical, with Bayern Munich “officially” announcing his departure on Tuesday.

Barca soon confirmed the transfer details for the talismanic striker, who will have a €500m buyout clause.

The 33-year-old scored 50 goals across all competitions last season, the most across Europe’s top five leagues, as Bayern Munich lifted their 10th Bundesliga title in a row.

Lewandowski broke Gerd Muller’s long-standing Bundesliga record by scoring 41 goals in a single season in the 2020/2021 campaign.

His 43 league goals in 2021 serve as the record for a calendar year in Germany’s top tier.

The forward’s 312 Bundesliga goals are the second-most scored by any player in competition’s history, behind Muller (365).

He leaves Bayern Munich having accumulated 344 goals and 57 assists across 375 appearances in all competitions.

Though club coach Julian Nagelsmann was reluctant to let Lewandowski leave, he suggested Bayern Munich’s game plan will become more “unpredictable” after his departure.

“When someone like Robert plays upfront, you play more crosses,” he told reporters on Bayern Munich’s pre-season tour in the U.S. “The way we’re going to play will change. It’s a new Bayern Munich.

“It will be a challenge —- and I like challenges. It’s good for everyone, we have to find new ways and be creative.

“In the past it might have been easier for the opponents to prepare for our game. Now we’re going to be even more unpredictable.”
