Barca chief speaks on reaching agreement with Lewandowski

Barcelona chief Mateu Alemany has played down reports of an agreement with Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

Bayern Munich have reiterated their stance that Lewandowski will not be sold in the summer transfer window, despite the fact the former Borussia Dortmund star has thus far refused to agree on a contract extension.

“We don’t have any agreement with the forward, that is speculation from the press that is very good for filling pages,” Alemany explained in an interview before kick-off against Eintracht Frankfurt.

    “It isn’t true.

“If we wanted him, the first thing we would do would be to talk to his club.”

Champions League: Real Madrid survive Chelsea’s nightmare

Spanish giants, Real Madrid survived Chelsea’s nightmare as Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze scored to ensure Villarreal eliminated Bayern Munich out of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Real Madrid held a 3-1 lead from the first leg of the tie but Chelsea pulled a stunner on the Spanish giants at the Bernabeu with the second leg of the tie ending in a 4:4 draw on aggregate at full time.

Karim Benzema put on a clinic for Los Blancos, displaying a clinical edge in the final third to score all three goals for the visitors at Stamford Bridge but it was Rodrygo who pulled level to give Real Madrid hope in the second leg encounter.

Fifteen minutes into the second leg, Mount, on the edge of the box, latched on to a flick from Werner and dispatched a firm right-footed strike past Courtois. He took a good first touch before burying his effort into the right corner of the net.

Into the second half at 51 minute, Chelsea again pulled the strings as Rudiger directed a pinpoint header past Courtois. Mount swinged a dangerous cross in from the right flank that sailed into the middle. Rudiger attacked the delivery before placing his effort with precision into the bottom-right corner.

However, in the 63rd minute of play, VAR played a huge moment in the tie as Alonso believed that he had fired Chelsea in front after dispatching a strike past Courtois at the second attempt.

However, VAR ruled that he handled the ball after seeing his first strike blocked by Carvajal. There was a slight touch and Madrid got a reprieve.

Meanwhile, in the 75th minute of play, Werner scored to put Chelsea in front of the tie. The German held his composure to bury a low strike into the net. It was Kovacic who released the forward in the inside-left channel and he cut back past the challenge of Carvajal. Werner still had work to do, but his effort clipped off Courtois and spun into the bottom-right corner.

Rodrygo, however, endured that Real Madrid remained in the tournament. The Brazilian guided a first-time strike past Mendy in the 80th minute, but the goal was all about Modric.

The veteran midfielder lifted a sublime cross to the back post with the outside of his right foot. Rodrygo only had to connect with the ball to score and did not disappoint with a deft touch to find the bottom-right corner.

Heading to extra-time after Rodrygo’s goal kept Madrid in the game after a brilliant surge from Chelsea, Benzema scored in the 96th minute of play to put Madrid back in front.

Benzema haunted Chelsea once more by scoring his fourth goal of the tie to put Madrid on course for the semi-finals. Vinicius did well down the left flank and dug out a cross for the Frenchman to attack. He placed his effort away from Mendy into the bottom-left corner with precision.

TNG reports Real Madrid won the game 5:4 on aggregate to join Villarreal that had earlier secured their place in the last four.

Champions League: Chukwueze eliminates Bayern for Villarreal

Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze scored to help Villarreal eliminate Bayern Munich out of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Villarreal secured a semi final spot in the Champions League in the process.

Villarreal entered the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie with a one goal advantage.

The Spanish side recorded a shock 1-0 win last week. Arnaut Danjuma’s strike was the difference during the first leg.

They maintained discipline to keep the German champions at bay in the second leg tie.

TNG reports it was Bayern Munich that was first to score in the second leg in the 52nd minute of play.

Lewandowski’s first shot of the night found the back of the net, punishing Parejo for a sloppy pass.

The Villarreal midfielder gave possession away, and that allowed Muller to pounce. The German international picked out Lewandowski, and the Pole did the rest, slotting the ball home via the far post.

With the goal, Lewandowski became the fifth player to score against 30 different Champions League teams as he joined Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Raul.

However, Villarreal replied in the 88th minute of play. Parejo’s quick thinking in the middle of the park was vital, as he played a crucial pass before Moreno was picked out.

The Villarreal striker looked across the pitch, and Chukwueze was waiting at the far post. The sub didn’t make a clean connection with the ball, but it was enough to beat Neuer.

Villarreal is now set to face either Benfica or Liverpool in the semi final.

  • Benzema treble as Real Madrid beat Chelsea, Bayern Munich lose

Benzema treble as Real Madrid beat Chelsea, Bayern Munich lose

Karim Benzema scored back-to-back UEFA Champions League hat-tricks as record winners Real Madrid took a big step towards the semi-finals with a 3-1 victory at title-holders Chelsea on Wednesday.

France striker Benzema headed home twice within three minutes midway through the first half.

He completed his treble seconds after the restart owing to a terrible blunder from goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Benzema had also scored a hat-trick in the previous game Real Madrid won with the same 3-1 scoreline, against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the last 16.

Kai Havertz was on target shortly before half-time for the Blues who eliminated Real Madrid in last year’s semi-finals.

They now face an uphill battle next week at the Bernabéu.

“They’re magic nights, like the other day at the Bernabéu against PSG. Today (Wednesday) we came out to win, to show we’re Real Madrid,” Benzema later said.

There was more joy for Spain as Europa League winners Villarreal beat harmless Bayern Munich 1-0 with the goal from Arnaut Danjuma’s early strike.

It was their next upset bid following a last 16 elimination of Juventus.

The other two first leg games were played on Tuesday, with Liverpool well placed winning 3-1 at Benfica while Manchester City edged Atletico Madrid 1-0.

Former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti tested negative just in time to make it to Stamford Bridge after a coronavirus infection at the helm of Real Madrid.

He then saw the unmarked Benzema head the opening goal in the 21st minute off a cross from Vinicius Junior who had hit the top of the bar earlier.

The goal rattled the Blues who had crashed 4-1 at the weekend against Brentford.

Three minutes later, Benzema wrong-footed Mendy by artistically heading Luka Modric’s cross into the far corner.

Havertz revived Chelsea’s hopes in the 40th minute when he headed in Jorginho’s chipped ball over the Real Madrid defence.

But Chelsea’s comeback attept stalled seconds after the restart when Mendy made a mess out of a routine pass to Antonio Rüdiger.

It left Benzema with an easy shot into the empty net for his 11th goal of the competition.

Romelo Lukaku came on only to head wide from a perfect position in the culmination of Chelsea’s woes.

“It is a heavy loss. It was one of the worst first halves that I saw from us here at Stamford Bridge,” Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel later said.

“If we keep playing like this … we will get hammered at Bernabeu.”

In Villarreal, Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies played his first game of the year after heart issues but it was the hosts who drew first blood after eight minutes.

That was when Danjuma fired in a low shot to complete a slick move on the right wing with his sixth goal of the campaign.

Bayern Munich were out of sorts but lucky because Francis Coquelin was ruled offside before his seemingly attempted cross went in.

Also, Gerard Moreno was denied by the left post, and he then missed the empty net from his own half after a mistake from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

“It was a deserved defeat. We weren’t good today. We didn’t defend well and lost too many balls,” Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

Forward Thomas Müller vowed: “We must now prepare for the return leg and hit back.”

  • Bayern Munich to face sanction for fielding 12 players against Freiburg

Bayern Munich to face sanction for fielding 12 players against Freiburg

Bayern Munich may be punished for fielding 12 players at some points in their Bundesliga game against Frieburg on Saturday

Leon Goretzka opened scoring after getting a starter’s shirt in four months in their controversial 4-1 thumping of Freiburg .

The result is a consolidation of Bayern munich’s top position on the Bundesliga table but the club may see some points withdrawn from them for the mix-up that happened in the game

“We drew the referee’s attention to the fact that Bayern had eleven outfield players on the pitch,” Freiburg director Jochen Saier said

All eyes will be on the German champions Bayern munich as they face Spanish side Villareal in the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

  • Bayern Munich cruise to victory over Union Berlin, but Hertha win

Bayern Munich cruise to victory over Union Berlin, but Hertha win

Tanguy Nianzou scored his first Bayern Munich goal on a rare start as the Bundesliga leaders recovered from two straight league draws on Saturday.

They had an easy 4-0 home win over Union Berlin.

The defending champions, seeking a 10th title in a row, increased their advantage back to seven points pending Borussia Dortmund’s trip to Cologne on Sunday.

Kingsley Coman opened the scoring on 16 minutes with a fast, swerving effort which goalkeeper Andreas Luthe should still have done better with.

“We played very well, we played together, we defended together. We were very efficient…and created lots of chances,” Coman said.

Nianzou, 19, then headed in a corner-kick on 25 minutes with Luthe getting a hand to the ball and again slightly at fault.

The French centre-back has struggled since arriving from Paris St-Germain (PSG) in 2020.

But the absences of Benjamin Pavard (coronavirus) and Niklas Süle (thigh injury) opened the door against Union Berlin.

He had a few worries defensively but eighth-placed Union Berlin could not find a final pass.

This is as Bayern Munich upped the ante on Borussia Dortmund with seven games left for the leaders to play.

Luthe’s terrible game continued when he crashed into Robert Lewandowski and the striker netted from the penalty kick spot just before the break.

Soon after the interval, the world player of the year scored his 31st of the league season after good work by Jamal Musiala.

Strugglers Hertha Berlin won 3-0 at home to Hoffenheim to move out of the automatic drop zone, in spite of new coach Felix Magath missing the game after contracting coronavirus.

Magath’s new British assistant Mark Fotheringham, relegated with Magath at Fulham in their last job in Europe together in 2014, was in charge on the Hertha Berlin bench and was energetic in his support.

“Mr Magath gave us some positive words and what Mark did on the sidelines was great,” midfielder Marco Richter said. “I don’t know if I should say but Mr Magath also talked to us at half-time (over the telephone).”

VfB Stuttgart stormed back from 2-1 down to win 3-2 at home to Augsburg to leave Hertha Berlin still in the relegation play-off spot.

Mainz beat Arminia Bielefeld 4-0 with goal-line technology wrongly awarding them another goal, which was taken away on video review.

Arminia Bielefeld slipped into the second automatic relegation spot.

They are a point behind Hertha Berlin, who are level on points with Stuttgart and Augsburg.

Rising COVID-19 figures in Germany also played minor havoc with other clubs.

Freiburg missed Nicolas Höfler in their 0-0 draw at bottom side Greuther Fürth and temporarily moved fourth ahead of RB Leipzig welcoming Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.

The match between Bochum and Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday was abandoned after a linesman was hit by a plastic cup thrown from the Bochum fans as Gladbach led 2-0.

  • Robert Lewandowski quits Bayern Munich training

Robert Lewandowski quits Bayern Munich training

Bayern Munich suffered a scare around their star striker Robert Lewandowski on Tuesday when he had to abandon training after slipping while attempting a shot.

World Footballer of the Year Lewandowski left the public session prematurely for medical examinations after the incident.

“I didn’t hit the ball cleanly and it hurts a bit,” Lewandowski said amid reports of a knee problem.

Bayern Munich later spoke of “a small injury” without disclosing any details in a club statement.

The Bundesliga champions will not want to be without their top goalscorer in the deciding weeks of the season.

Bayern Munich have reached the quarter-finals of the 2021/2022 UEFA Champions League, with the draw slated for Friday, and which will be played April 5/April 6 and April 12/April 13.

They went out at this stage last year against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) when Lewandowski was sidelined with injury.

Bayern Munich are top of the Bundesliga but their lead could be reduced to four points by Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

They play on Saturday against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, followed by an international break — where Poland’s Lewandowski has no game — before an April 2 date at Freiburg.

But there was also good news at the Bayern Munich camp as key midfielder Leon Goretzka returned to team training from a knee injury.

It is an injury which has seen him out of action for more than three months.

Corentin Tolisso was also back from an injury sustained last month.

“It went well and it was fun. Of course I’m excited to take the next steps now,” Goretzka said. “It’s extremely liberating. I hope I can come back better now.”

  • UCL: Liverpool survive Inter Milan scare as Bayern Munich thrash FC Salzburg

UCL: Liverpool survive Inter Milan scare as Bayern Munich thrash FC Salzburg

Liverpool on Tuesday slipped to a shock defeat against Inter Milan at Anfield but managed to seal their place into the Champions League quarterfinals with a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Lautaro Martinez’s wonder strike sealed a 1-0 win for the reigning Serie A champions but Inter failed to capitalise after Alexis Sanchez was sent off moments after the goal.

It is Liverpool’s first defeat in the competition this season but their 2-0 win at the San Siro last month was enough to seal their place in the final eight.

Jurgen Klopp’s side can now turn their attention to the Premier League with fixtures against Brighton and Arsenal to come in quick succession.

The first half was a tight affair with Inter edging the early stages as they pressed for an early goal but failed to create any clear-cut opportunity.

The game was stopped after 25 minutes when Liverpool supporters in the Kop stand alerted the referee and players to a medical emergency.

The match resumed and moments later, Liverpool almost took the lead on the night but Joel Matip’s header rattled off the crossbar.

Virgil Van Dijk came close to scoring from the resulting corner but Milan Skriniar made a stunning block to deny the Liverpool captain.

The hosts hit the woodwork again shortly after the break when Mohamed Salah’s close-range effort struck the bottom of the post.

Just after the hour mark, Inter silenced Anfield as Martinez hit a stunning strike from outside of the box that arrowed into the top corner.

Inter’s momentum was immediately halted seconds later when Sanchez received a second yellow card and the visitors were reduced to 10 men.

Liverpool started to dominate possession after the sending off and hit the woodwork for a third time after Salah’s effort struck the post.

Substitute Luis Diaz went close in stoppage time but his goalbound effort was cleared off the line by Arturo Vidal.

Liverpool have now reached the last eight of the Champions League for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

Bayern Munich thrash FC Salzburg to reach Champions League quarterfinals

Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski scored three times as Bayern Munich rolled into the Champions League quarterfinals with a 7-1 win over FC Salzburg at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

The Bundesliga leaders won the tie 8-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw against the Austrian side in Salzburg on Feb. 16.

Lewandowski had the hosts up two goals by the 21st minute, drawing a pair of fouls in the penalty area — both against Maximilian Wober — and calmly dispatching the resulting spot kicks to make it 2-0.

Lewandowski completed his first-half trick minutes later with a goal from close range and Serge Gnabry added Bayern’s fourth soon after following a Salzburg giveaway to effectively put the game to bed almost before it began.

Thomas Muller got on the scoresheet early in the second half, sweeping home from a Leroy Sane assist.

Maurits Kjaergaard managed to pull one back for Salzburg with a powerful shot that beat Manuel Neuer at his near post.

It was too little, too late for Salzburg, though, who were making the first knockout round appearance for an Austrian side in Champions League history.

Muller hit his second and Sane scored two minutes later as Julien Naglesmann’s side put further gloss on the scoreline en route to a 20th Champions League quarterfinal berth for the Bavarians.

The result marked the second time in Bayern Munich history they scored seven goals in a UCL knockout round match, the other being their infamous 8-2 win over FC Barcelona in the 2020 quarterfinals.

  • Bayern Munich draw at Salzburg, Liverpool beat Inter Milan in Champions League

Bayern Munich draw at Salzburg, Liverpool beat Inter Milan in Champions League

Red Bull Salzburg came within minutes of a famous victory on Wednesday in the last 16 of the 2021/2022 UEFA Champions League.

But Kingsley Coman’s late equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw for former champions Bayern Munich.

Coman, who got the winner in the 2019/2020 final match, converted at the back post in the 89th minute from a Thomas Müller flick.

Chikwubuike Adamu had previously opened the scoring in the 21st minute in what was Salzburg’s first-ever knock-out game in the elite competition.

Bayern Munich are now well placed going into the March 8 return leg.

But a second successive game without a win, following a shock 4-2 loss at Bochum in the Bundesliga, will cause concern in Munich.

Liverpool in contrast did live up to their status as favourites at Inter Milan.

But they were made to work hard for a 2-0 victory, courtesy of late goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) had beaten Real Madrid 1-0 on Tuesday when Manchester City cruised 5-0 at Sporting Lisbon.

The remaining first leg matches take place next week.

Bayern Munich’s only previous loss to an Austrian side came back in 1967 to Rapid Vienna, when they recovered and went on to lift the Cup Winners’ Cup.

Munich-born Karim Adeyemi, who played for Bayern as a youth, cut in from the right and his pass bobbled through for Adamu who fired high into the net.

Bayern Munich improved after the break but could not find a way past home goalkeeper Philipp Köhn until a last-gasp heave into the box landed at Coman’s foot.

“In the first half there was a bit too little,” Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich said. “Salzburg had dangerous counter-attacks.

“In the second half we controlled things better. You realised in the team that we wanted to win the game.”

Kimmich admitted, however, Bayern Munich were “not in a flow that goes by itself. That has impacted everyone.”

Köhn had denied Leroy Sane, and brilliantly grabbed the rebound from Serge Gnabry.

But Sven Ulreich, again deputising for the injured Manuel Neuer, also had his moments.

He prevented Brenden Aaronson making it 2-0 in the first half and was lucky when Benjamin Pavard could block Adamu on a rebound from Adeyemi’s second half chance.

“At the end, it felt like a defeat. But 1-1 is a result to be seen,” said Adeyemi. “We’re ready for the next game.”

Teammate Andreas Ulmer agreed: “It doesn’t feel so good right now. But with a bit of distance you can be proud.”

Inter Milan played at furious pace to disrupt Liverpool’s rhythm but struggled to make clear opportunities, other than Hakan Calhanoglu smacking the bar from close-range.

Liverpool survived the storm and Firmino’s glancing header from a 75th minute corner-kick broke the deadlock.

Salah swept home from inside the penalty box with seven minutes remaining to put a slightly harsh reflection on the scoreline.

But it does leave Jürgen Klopp’s side on the brink of the last eight.

“It’s a tough place to come, a really good team, a good system,” Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk said. “Overall it’s a very solid performance and a good result to take back home.

“I think it’s a well-deserved win, but it was very hard work. We needed to be ready to suffer and do the hard work, and we definitely did.”

  • Death threats made to Bayern Munich players in anonymous letter

Death threats made to Bayern Munich players in anonymous letter

Death threats have been made against several Bayern Munich players via an anonymous letter, a police spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday.

“We are investigating on suspicion of threats and disturbing the public peace by threatening to commit a crime,” said the spokesperson, who did not provide further details.

The Bild newspaper had reported the letter mentioned Robert Lewandowski, Manuel Neuer and Serge Gnabry by name.

The letter was received on Jan. 12 by the second division club St Pauli Hamburg, who turned it over to the police.

The letter reportedly said “Save the league, save the sport of football. Fire and death to the dirty Bayern pigs.”

Bayern Munich did not want to comment on the incident.
