Bundesliga: Bayern Munich suffer biggest loss since 1978

Bayern Munich suffered their biggest defeat since 1978 as they were thrashed at Borussia Monchengladbach in the German Cup second round.

Gladbach led 1-0 after two minutes and 3-0 by the 21st minute.

Kouadio Kone slotted home his first goal for the club before Ramy Bensebaini swept home Jonas Hofmann’s cross and then netted a penalty.

Breel Embolo took advantage of a defensive mistake for the fourth and then his second from Luca Netz’s pass.

“I’m absolutely shocked. We simply didn’t turn up,” Bayern sports director and former player Hasan Salihamidzic told ARD.

“We were just not there. We did not win a single tackle or challenge in the entire first half.

“Everything that could go wrong went wrong. We let ourselves be outplayed in every situation – a collective blackout.”

Gladbach scored with five of their six shots on target – with Bayern having more possession and more efforts than the hosts without scoring.

It was only the second defeat Bayern, who named a first-choice team, have suffered under Julian Nagelsmann and ended a run of scoring in 85 consecutive games.

Nagelsmann was at home self-isolating, having tested positive for Covid-19.

Bayern last lost a game by a five-goal margin 43 years ago when Fortuna Dusseldorf beat them 7-1 in the Bundesliga.

Their record defeat remains a 7-0 home loss to Schalke in the league back in 1976 – but this is their biggest defeat in a competition they have won a record 20 times.

Adi Hutter’s Gladbach, who have lost four of their past eight games, are in the bottom half of the Bundesliga.

Bayern Munich fullback: I know I’m better than Alexander-Arnold

Bayern Munich fullback Benjamin Pavard insists he’s a better player than Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The France World Cup winner feels he doesn’t get the same positive press as Alexander-Arnold and PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi.

Pavard reasoned on Canal Football Club: “Great coaches put me as a right back because they have confidence in my ability.

“It’s not because of my beautiful eyes or my hair.

“On paper, Pavard is perhaps less sexy than Hakimi or Alexander-Arnold, but I think I am defensively more complete.”

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich beat Furth to go 3 points clear

Bayern Munich eased past hosts Greuther Fuerth 3-1 on Friday, in spite of playing almost the entire second half with 10 men.

The win helped the defending champions to open up a three-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga.

But Bayern Munich top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski saw his scoring streak snapped, after failing to equal Gerd Muller’s all-time record of scoring in 16 consecutive league games.

It was always going to be a one-sided encounter against the newly-promoted club, bottom in the Bundesliga and without a win this season, and Bayern Munich took a quick lead.

This was barely after just 10 minutes into the game with Thomas Muller slotting in from an Alphonso Davies cut-back.

Joshua Kimmich was devastatingly accurate with a low drive on the half hour to score his third league goal, after netting twice last week, and Lewandowski hit the woodwork just before the break.

A reckless challenge by Benjamin Pavard three minutes after the restart left the champions with 10 men, but it hardly changed the dynamic of the game.

A 68th minute own goal by Sebastian Griesbeck, under pressure from Lewandowski, killed off any slim hopes of a comeback that Fuerth may have been secretly harbouring.

The home fans did get a moment to savour when Cedric Itten headed in a cross in the 87th minute to cut the deficit.

Bayern Munich, who take on Dynamo Kyiv in the UEFA Champions League next week, move up to 16 points from six matches, with VfL Wolfsburg, on 13 in second place, travelling to Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Third-placed Borussia Dortmund, on 12, take on Borussia Monchengladbach.

Bundelisga giant Bayern Munich are in contact with Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

BILD says Rudiger, 28, has a year left on his Stamford Bridge deal – he earns around £100,000-a-week and is not even in the club’s top 10 earners.

They could lose the Germany international for nothing next summer if he does not sign an extension.

He can also sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club in January.

And Bayern have reached out to Rudiger’s agent, Sahr Senesie – who is also his half brother.

Rudiger is said to be after £200k-a-week with Chelsea reportedly only willing to pay £150k-a-week.

And that could also be too much for Bayern.

Liverpool target Karim Adeyemi admits he has ambitions beyond Anfield.

The RB Salzburg striker is being watched by Liverpool and Barcelona. But there’s another European giant the Germany international would favour should they come calling.

Despite being released by Bayern Munich as a junior, Adeyemi says he’d be happy to return.

Adeyemi told Marca: “If they (Bayern Munich) were to place a bid, I think I would choose that path.

“I want to show them what I can do, who I am and that it was a mistake to let me go. That motivates me.”

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich battling for Rudiger

Real Madrid are the latest team to show an interest in Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

The German is in the last year of his contract, as his current deal expires in the summer of 2022.

Real have now joined Bayern Munich in the race to sign Rudiger in the summer, according to reports in Spain.

Considering his contract situation, the centre-back can even speak to teams about a pre-contract in January.

Chelsea are still hopeful about tying him down to a new contract, but his wage demands are thought to be an issue.

Rudiger is a key member of Thomas Tuchel’s five-man defence at present.

Ex-Bayern Munich defender Boateng signs 2-year deal at Lyon

Former Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has joined Olympique Lyon on a two-year deal, the French Ligue 1 said on Wednesday.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup winner with Germany was out of contract in Munich in July and had bided his time before picking his next club.

Lyon, coached by former Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz, conceded 43 goals last term and were looking for an experienced defender.

The 32-year-old Boateng won two UEFA Champions League honours, nine Bundesliga titles and five German Cups at Bayern Munich.

Bundesliga: Lewandowski scores 300th goal for Bayern Munich

Robert Lewandowski brought up his triple century of goals for Bayern Munich on Saturday as the Poland star’s hat-trick helped the Bundesliga champions breeze past Hertha Berlin 5-0 in a one-sided encounter.

Lewandowski picked up right where he left off at the end of the last Bundesliga season and went into the weekend clash with two goals in as many games.

And he is now right back on top of the league scoring charts, which he has topped for six of the last eight years.

In 2020-21 the Polish striker set a new personal season best, netting an incredible 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga games to mark his biggest league return since arriving in the German top flight with Borussia Dortmund back in 2010.

Kimmich gets Bayern contract extension until 2025

Bundesliga champions FC Bayern Munich have renewed the contract of key midfielder Joshua Kimmich by two years until 2025.

Kimmich, 26, joined Munich in 2015 from RB Leipzig and has become a team leader there and in the national team over the past years. He has won every club title with Munich.

“The most important reason for my contract extension is that I can pursue my passion with joy every day here at FC Bayern.

“I have a team where I can achieve everything.

“I still don’t think I’m at the end of my development and I’m convinced there’s a lot possible at FC Bayern in the next years,” Kimmich said in a club statement.

Bayern board member for sport, Hasan Salihamidzic, spoke of a “strong signal, both internally and externally.”

Munich president Herbert Hainer said: “He’s developed into a top international player with us, and it’s important to us to keep players of this quality in our team for the long term.

“With him, FC Bayern have the best chances of achieving great and ambitious goals again in the future.”
