Hernandez told me to join Bayern Munich – Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe has spoken glowingly about Bayern Munich while revealing Lucas Hernandez has urged him to join the Bundesliga giants.

Mbappe has been heavily linked with a big-money move to Real Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window, having yet to reach an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain over a contract extension.

However, the 22-year-old says that Hernandez has been trying to convince him to choose a different path while away on international duty with France.

Mbappe has now expressed his admiration towards Bayern after talks with one of their players, telling SportBild : “Lucas Hernandez told me that I should come to Munich to play for Bayern.

“Bayern is one of the five best clubs in the world. One can only congratulate them on how they manage to keep the quality in the squad every year. They just know what they’re doing.

“Now [Jerome] Boateng and [David] Alaba have left, but [Dayot] Upamecano, who is an excellent defender, came in. They have a clear concept that makes them a great club.

“And yes, you are always a favourite for any title. So I’ll always have to win against Bayern in the future if I want to win a trophy.”

Pressed on whether he could leave PSG this year or as a free agent in 2022, the forward added: “In football, you never know what’s going to happen. But I am currently very happy as it is.”

David Alaba’s father rejects Bayern Munich claims

The father of David Alaba insists they didn’t walk out on Bayern Munich.

Alaba is joining Real Madrid in a Bosman deal at the end of the month.

And father, George, insists they gave Bayern the chance to renew his deal: “A few things did not go well.

“Those responsible know what happened in the talks. I can only say one thing: the fronts were hardened in the end.”

On moving to Real Madrid, Alaba’s father added: “David knew from the start that he wanted to join this club when he left Bavaria.”

Real Madrid confirm signing of David Alaba

La Liga giant Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of David Alaba on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Bayern Munich.

Several leading European clubs had been linked with his signature, but Alaba has chosen to continue his career at Santiago Bernabeu.

Real confirmed that Alaba has signed a five-year deal at the club and will join up with his new team-mates after the European Championships, at which Alaba will be a key figure in the Austrian side.

  • Lewandowski breaks Mueller’s 49-year scoring record

Lewandowski breaks Mueller’s 49-year scoring record

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski said it felt like being in a “science fiction film” as he scored his 41st Bundesliga goal of the season on Saturday to break Gerd Mueller’s 49-year-old German league record for a single campaign.

Lewandowski scored in the 90th minute of Bayern’s 5-2 home win over Augsburg having equalled Mueller’s record of 40, which was set in 1971/72, last weekend.

Lewandowski broke Mueller’s mark with a classic poacher’s effort, rounding the Augsburg goalkeeper to fire home having snapped up the rebound after Leroy Sane’s shot was parried just before the whistle.

“You wait for 90 minutes and then it comes in the last few seconds,” Lewandowski told Sky.

“It was like being in a science fiction film. I’ve lost my voice.

“I saw Leroy shoot for goal, I had to keep believing and luckily it came off.”

Lewandowski claimed the record having had his six previous shots all saved as Bayern were presented with the Bundesliga trophy after the final whistle for the ninth straight season

They finished the season 13 points clear in the table.

“I was a little bit disappointed to have not scored sooner, but sometimes such records have to be fought for,” added Lewandowski.

“I was patient and believed until the end. I thank my team, who share the record with me.”

It was the last game for Bayern head coach Hansi Flick, who will be replaced by Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann next season having won seven titles over the last 18 months.

At the other end of the table, Werder Bremen were relegated on the last day of the season after 40 years in Germany’s top flight.

Cologne’s 1-0 home win over bottom side Schalke meant automatic relegation for Bremen, who were thumped 4-2 at home to Moenchengladbach.

This is Bremen’s first relegation since 1979/80 before coming back up the following season.

Union Berlin qualified for the new Europa Conference League play-offs finishing seventh in the table with a shock 2-1 win over second-placed RB Leipzig.

  • Chelsea make contact with Robert Lewandowski

Chelsea make contact with Robert Lewandowski

Premier League club Chelsea have made contact with Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, according to Sky Sport in Germany.

Lewandowski has enjoyed another stellar season in the Bundesliga and Bayern are in no mood to countenance the Poland international’s departure.

However, that has not stopped rumours swirling around his future, with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain linked with an approach.

Chelsea are also said to have made their interest known to Lewandowski, but the Premier League is not viewed as the most attractive destination for the forward, who reportedly has Spain as a preference if he is to move.

I really wanted to join Man Utd – Upamecano

Departing RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano admits he wanted to sign for Manchester United at 17.

Upamecano will join Bayern Munich this summer and recalled coming close to joining United as a teen.

But he recalled to the Athletic: “I was a young boy. I wanted to sign for them straight away.

“Manchester United! But then my parents took me aside and said: ‘Let’s think carefully about this’.”

He added: “We thought about it for a long time and then decided that going ‘etape par etape’ [step by step] was the best option for me.”

  • Bayern Munich win 9th straight Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich win 9th straight Bundesliga title

Rampant Bayern Munich were confirmed as German champions for the 31st time on Saturday and extended their record run of consecutive Bundesliga titles to nine.

RB Leipzig’s 3-2 defeat at Borussia Dortmund handed the title to Bayern Munich, who celebrated in the later game with an emphatic 6-0 triumph at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick to move onto 39 goals for the season from just 27 appearances, one behind Gerd Mueller’s Bundesliga record with two games left to play.

Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick, leaving at the end of the campaign after winning seven trophies, later said: “The coaching staff are so proud to have accompanied this team for two years.

“It has been a pleasure. I really, really enjoy working with the team. We have a team with enormous quality.”

Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho scored twice, including a late winner which not only sealed the title for rivals Bayern Munich but also boosted his side’s UEFA Champions League hopes.

They moved up to fourth —- two points ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt who host Mainz on Sunday.

Third-placed Wolfsburg look well set to achieve their European dream after a 3-0 win over Union Berlin.

Werder Bremen, who had lost seven straight times in the league, drew 0-0 with sixth-placed Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim beat relegated Schalke 04 4-2 having been 2-0 down.

Second-bottom Cologne welcome Freiburg on Sunday when fellow relegation candidates Hertha Berlin and Arminia Bielefeld also meet.

VfB Stuttgart beat struggling Augsburg 2-1 on Friday.

A well-worked move put Borussia Dortmund ahead early with Thorgan Hazard’s flick releasing Marco Reus who finished with aplomb.

Borussia Dortmund, without the injured Erling Haaland, thought they should have had a penalty kick for Kevin Kampl’s handball just before the break but appeals were waved away.

Sancho then made it 2-0 early in the second period when he fired home amid lax RB Leipzig defending.

Lukas Klostermann headed in a corner-kick to reduce the deficit and out of nowhere it was suddenly 2-2 on 77 minutes through RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo.

But Sancho was on fire and won it for Borussia Dortmund after another superb move on 87 minutes.

“In the second half we played well,” Klostermann said. “We have to lift our heads up quickly. The next game is very important.”

RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann leaves for Bayern Munich at the end of the season, but the 33-year-old can still sign off from RB Leipzig with some glory.

This will be when his current side meet Borussia Dortmund again in the German Cup final on Thursday.

“Congratulations (to Bayern) on a deserved title,” Nagelsmann said while grinning.

It is the second Bundesliga triumph for Flick who took over during last season but is departing amid disagreements with sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.

There is also the speculation linking him to the Germany job which will be vacant after Euro 2020.

All but one of Bayern Munich’s national titles have come in the Bundesliga era from 1963-1964.

Their current streak started with the league, German Cup and Champions League treble in 2013, a feat repeated under Flick in 2020.

Their dominant decade also included further German Cups in 2014, 2016 and 2019, and a handful of minor trophies.

Gladbach were lambs to the slaughter and Lewandowski opened the scoring after two minutes.

Thomas Mueller’s deflected effort followed before an acrobatic finish gave Lewandowski his 200th Bundesliga goal for Bayern Munich from Mueller’s 17th assist of the league campaign.

Kingsley Coman rattled in a fourth just before the break.

Lewandowski converted a penalty kick midway through the second half to leave Mueller’s record of 40 goals very much in his sights.

A late red card for Tanguy Nianzou for a professional foul was the only blemish for Bayern Munich, with Leroy Sane then making it 6-0.

  • Martinez to leave Bayern Munich after 9 years

Martinez to leave Bayern Munich after 9 years

Spanish veteran Javi Martinez will leave Bayern Munich after nine years in summer after both sides agreed not to renew his contract, the Bundesliga champions said on Tuesday.

Bayern Munich signed the defender and midfielder Martinez in 2012 for a then club record 40 million euros (48 million dollars) from Athletic Bilbao.

Now 33, he was part of the Bayern Munich team which won the 2013 and 2020 trebles, and he won 23 titles overall during his term.

“It was a difficult decision when we signed Javi Martinez in summer 2012 because the transfer fee of 40 million euros was a record amount for us at the time.

“The decision was spot on,” Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

Board member Oliver Kahn named him (Martinez) “an important cornerstone of our team for nine years, during which time we have made history”.

The club’s board member for sports Hasan Salihamidzic also said Martinez’s “track record is almost unparalleled.”

President Herbert Hainer said “Martinez will always have a special place in the history of this club.”

Martinez, whose future is not known, said: “I lived for this club, always gave everything for it, and am very happy about the many titles we won together.

“FC Bayern and its fans will forever be in my heart.”

Bayern Munich said Martinez along with the other outgoing figures —— players David Alaba and Jermome Boateng, and coach Hansi Flick —- would “be given a fitting farewell by FC Bayern”

The club said the farewell which would come at the end of the season was in recognition of their great achievements for the club”.

  • Bayern Munich announce Nagelsmann as manager

Bayern Munich announce Nagelsmann as manager

Bayern Munich have announced Julian Nagelsmann will take charge next season.

The Bundesliga giants have agreed a world-record £21.7million compensation package with RB Leipzig.

Nagelsmann agreed personal terms with the German champions on Monday, before a huge pay-off was sealed and the deal was announced on Tuesday morning.

The news will come as a huge blow to Tottenham in their search for a new manager, with the German high on their list of potential candidates.

Current Bayern boss Hansi Flick announced earlier this month that he wants his contract terminated at the end of the season, with last season’s Treble-winning manager strongly linked to the Germany national team role.

Nagelsmann has impressed at the helm of RB Leipzig, guiding them to a third-placed finish last season, while this time around they sit second with five games to play.

  • Bayern miss chance to secure title after loss at Mainz

Bayern miss chance to secure title after loss at Mainz

Bayern Munich blew the chance to clinch the Bundesliga title on Saturday as the club world champions crashed to a 2-1 defeat away to Mainz.

Victory at Mainz, where Bayern last lost nearly a decade ago, would have secured a ninth successive German title for Hansi Flick’s side.

First-half goals by Jonathan Burkardt and Robin Quaison sealed Mainz’s third straight win, pulling them away from the relegation fight and forcing Bayern to wait to be crowned champions.

On his return from a knee injury, Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski scored just before the final whistle to leave him four short of Gerd Mueller’s all-time record of 40 Bundesliga goals in a season.

Bayern can still win the title on Sunday without kicking a ball if second-placed RB Leipzig, who are 10 points behind Munich, lose at home to Stuttgart.
