Bayern Munich defender agrees Real Madrid deal

Bayern Munich defender David Alaba is ready to join Real Madrid.

Off contract in June, Alaba has been fielding interest from clubs across Europe, though Real Madrid have always been considered favourites for his signing.

Sky Deutschland says Alaba has chosen to join Real at the end of the season.

Indeed, it’s suggested Alaba has not only agreed terms with the Spanish giants, but has already signed a five-year pre-contract.

Earlier reports had suggested Alaba was demanding €450,000-a-week from his next club.

PSG knockout Champions League holders to reach semis

Paris St Germain (PSG) reached the Champions League semi-finals despite a 1-0 home defeat by holders Bayern Munich, on Tuesday, as they progressed on away goals.

This was after a 3-3 aggregate result in a thriller that was on a knife edge until the final whistle.

Bayern striker, Eric Choupo-Moting scored the only goal before the interval, but it was not enough to overturn the German side’s 3-2 loss in last week’s first leg.

Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG side, who struggled at times in Munich, had the clearest chances but lacked efficiency, with Neymar hitting the woodwork twice and Kylian Mbappe’s speed proving tough to handle, but with no end product.

PSG kept their composure in a nerve-wrecking finale to book a last-four spot against Manchester City or Borussia Dortmund, who play on Wednesday, as they aim to reach the final for the second year in a row in their third semi-final appearance.

Bayern eventually paid for the absence of injured talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski and forward Serge Gnabry, who had tested positive for COVID-19, while PSG managed to live without captain Marquinhos and influential midfielder Marco Verrati.

“Normally, my team has so much quality in the final third, but today they were lacking that final punch.

“We have to accept that, even though we would have liked a different outcome,” said Bayern coach, Hansi Flick, who added that he would decide on his future at the club at the end of the season

“Now we’re in the semi-finals and we can dream big,” said Neymar.

Pochettino added: “We were very focused. It was a really tough match – I’m really happy because the players deserve big credit. To win and qualify for the semi-finals is an amazing moment for us.”

PSG’s home form has been a cause for concern this season, but this time they did not freeze and proved extremely dangerous on the break throughout the match.

Without the injured Marquinhos, Danilo started alongside Presnel Kimpembe in central defence for the French champions, while Bayern were also without Leon Goretzka in the midfield.

Bayern applied the pressure early on, but PSG threatened on the counter with Mbappe and Neymar having the early chances in an error-strewn start.

The visitors had their first attempt in the 25th minute when Leroy Sane’s curled short from outside the box went just wide.

PSG came then close on a quick break as Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer denied Neymar in a one-on-one after the Brazilian had been found unmarked by Mbappe.

Neymar was at it again three times in a handful of minutes with a powerful shot that Neuer deflected onto his post, a superb curled effort that crashed against the bar and another attempt that hit the post after he was played through by Mbappe.

But Bayern then went in front as Choupo-Moting headed home after PSG keeper Keylor Navas deflected David Alaba’s shot into the path of the former PSG player, giving the German champions the lead on the night five minutes before the break.

PSG went close again early in the second half when the excellent Angel Di Maria controlled Mbappe’s cross and sent the ball past a flying Neuer across the goal only for Neymar’s stretch to come up inches short as he tried to slide it home.

Mbappe thought he had equalised in the 78th minute after being played through by Neymar from just inside Bayern’s half, but a VAR review confirmed Italian referee Daniele Orsato’s decision to rule it out for offside.

Flick’s team created danger in the box repeatedly in the closing stages but the home defence held firm as PSG avenged last year’s 1-0 final defeat by Bayern.

  • Wijnaldum offered to Bayern Munich but…

Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has priced himself out of a move to Bayern Munich.

Wijnaldum is out of contract this summer, meaning clubs outside England could have approached him from January this year to negotiate personal terms for a free transfer, with several top European clubs said to be keen.

But Abendzeitung reports German giants Bayern have now pulled out of the race to sign the 30-year-old Dutchman.

Wijnaldum’s team apparently travelled to Munich but the reigning Bundesliga and European champions felt there was little to no chance of agreeing a deal given his contract demands.

Bayern have historically signed key players on free transfers from rivals, including Manuel Neuer, Robert Lewandowski, and Leon Goretzka.

But Hansi Flick’s side would prefer Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus and are therefore willing to pass on Wijnaldum.

UCL: Mbappe hits double as PSG shock Bayern Munich

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Paris St-Germain produced a superb away performance to beat title holders Bayern Munich in a thrilling Champions League quarter-final first leg.

This was a meeting between last year’s finalists and they both contributed in a hugely entertaining game that in itself would have been worthy of being the final of the competition.

Mbappe took just three minutes to make his mark as he was fed by Neymar and the striker thumped a drive through Manuel Neuer’s legs.

Marquinhos doubled the lead for the French champions midway through the first half with a neat finish from a great ball by Neymar before ex-PSG striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting headed home to halve the deficit.

Neuer made amends for his earlier mistake by denying Neymar from point-blank range early in the second half, before Keylor Navas kept out strikes from David Alaba and Benjamin Pavard at the other end.

But Bayern Munich kept up the pressure and deservedly levelled on the hour mark when Thomas Muller guided a header into the back of the net from Joshua Kimmich’s free kick.

However, Mbappe had the final say as he swept a low strike through Jerome Boateng’s legs late on to give PSG a third crucial away goal heading into the second leg.

We considered signing Ibrahimovic – Bayern chief

Bayern Munich supremo Uli Hoeness admits they’ve considered signing AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the past.

The Swede and Milan are set to enter new contract talks, with his current deal expiring June.

Asked if Bayern would be interested, Hoeness ruled out a move, but revealed they’d considered the centre-forward in the past.

“He’s a great player,” said Hoeness.

“But his salary expectations were also out of reach. We were interested once, but didn’t even get to the main course.”

Lewandowski receives state honour from Polish president

Poland and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski on Monday was awarded Commander’s Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order, one of the highest state honours, by Polish President Andrzej Duda.

World Player of the Year Lewandowski was awarded for his accomplishments in football as well as promoting Poland abroad.

During a ceremony at the presidential palace in Warsaw, the Polish president called Lewandowski “a national sports hero” and “the quintessence of perfection”, in praising the footballer for his hard work.

The Bayern Munich star underlined the role of his team-mates, coaches, family and friends, and stressed his focus on the challenges yet to come.

“Perhaps, when I sit on the couch I will think about the trophies won …

“But for now my ambition is big enough that I don’t want to become complacent,” said 32-year-old Lewandowski, who helped Bayern Munich to a treble of domestic league, Cup and UEFA Champions League last season.

Lewandowski is currently leading the Bundesliga’s scoring charts with 35 goals and has recently become the second all-time goalscorer of the league, behind Gerd Mueller.

He is within reach of Mueller’s long-standing record of 40 goals scored in one season.

In his 10 full Bundesliga seasons, Lewandowski has collected eight championships, six with Bayern Munich and two with Borussia Dortmund where he played 2010 to 2014.

In the Polish national team, Lewandowski played 116 games and scored 63 goals, both national records.

Lewandowski scores hat-trick as Bayern thrash Stuttgart

Robert Lewandowski scored a first-half hat-trick as 10-man Bayern Munich thrashed Stuttgart to go four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

Bayern’s Alphonso Davies was sent off after 12 minutes only for Lewandowski to open the scoring five minutes later.

Serge Gnabry doubled Bayern’s advantage and Lewandowski completed his hat-trick with two further goals before half-time.

The Poland striker has now scored 42 times for Bayern this season.

With referee Daniel Schlager showing Davies a straight red for a foul on Stuttgart’s Wataru Endo, Bayern’s winning run – which stood at five going into Saturday’s game – initially looked in danger.

However, three goals in the following 11 minutes put the game beyond doubt and the hosts cantered to all three points after the restart.

  • Bayern Munich and Flick make Champions League history

Bayern Munich and Flick make Champions League history

Hansi Flick has yet to lose or draw a Champions League knockout game while in charge of Bayern Munich, with his streak extending to seven matches on Wednesday via a 2-1 second-leg win over Lazio that sent the club to the last-eight.

Despite a late consolation finish from the visitors, the tie was never in doubt after Robert Lewandowski converted from the spot in the 33rd minute and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting widened the Bavarians’ lead midway through the second half.

Flick is off to an unparalleled start in Europe, and based on Bayern Munich’s comfort in dispatching their Italian foes 6-2 on aggregate, his perfect knockout record stands a reasonable chance of continuing in the quarter-finals.

There are several firsts Bayern Munich accomplished by smashing through Lazio.

They have now qualified for the quarter-finals 19 times – more than any other team in Champions League history. Flick, meanwhile, is the first manager to win each of his first seven knockout stage games in the competition.

The Bavarians have also tied their best unbeaten Champions League streak including group stage matches, avoiding defeat in 19 straight games.

  • Lewandowski has no thought of retiring yet

Lewandowski has no thought of retiring yet

World footballer of the year, Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich FC says he is not yet turning his thoughts to retirement.

He believes he can remain at the top level with the club for some time.

The Polish striker told the Sport Bild magazine he was aware people now looked at his age of 32, “but quite honestly: I feel better than at 26 or 27.

“I’m a better player now than six years ago.”

Lewandowski was top scorer for Bayern in every competition last season as they won the treble and leads the Bundesliga scoring chart again with 32 goals.

Scoring at a goal a game rate in the final nine matches of the season will see him break Gerd Mueller’s seemingly eternal record of 40 from 1971-72.

How long Lewandowski can maintain this form is difficult to predict, he said, “but I definitely trust myself for years to come to hold this level – at least!”

And a late career change to a softer league is also not something that appeals at this point in time.

“I can well imagine to end my career with Bayern at the highest level,” he said. “But it is still too soon for that.

“If something works well you shouldn’t end it.”

  • Tuchel has us pressing like Bayern, Liverpool – Rudiger

Tuchel has us pressing like Bayern, Liverpool – Rudiger

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger sees similarity between the playstyle of his club side and Bayern Munich.

The Blues have been on an excellent run since new boss Thomas Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard.

They are unbeaten in 12 matches in all competitions, their latest being a 2-0 success over Everton at home.

“It gives us maybe a little bit less stress behind,” Rudiger told the Daily Star.

“If you keep the opponent in their own half, even if they counter-attack, they still have to go 70-80 metres to our goal.

“I think that makes sense, to keep them high up the pitch, in their own half, as much as you can.”

Rudiger added: “When a team keeps you in your own half it’s very hard to go over the middle line.

“Liverpool did this so well in the last few years and this is because of Klopp. In Germany many teams play like this. Bayern Munich as well.

“What’s always been there is this counter-pressing. In those five seconds after you lose the ball, to try to win it back and then spaces open up and you are closer to the goal when you win it too.

“You don’t need to be going 70 metres to goal. You are already there.

“I think you can see the impact it had if you look at the results of the German national team – winning the World Cup in 2014.”
