Bayern thrash Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea’s Champions League campaign is surely over after they were brutally outclassed by Bayern Munich in the last-16 first-leg tie at Stamford Bridge.

The Bundesliga leaders followed in the footsteps of closest rivals RB Leipzig, who won at Tottenham at this same stage six days previously, by coming to the capital and producing a hugely impressive display.

And, as when Bayern inflicted an historic 7-2 home defeat on Spurs in October, former Arsenal star Serge Gnabry was the tormentor-in-chief as he revelled on his return to London.

The 24-year-old scored four at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and he delivered the end product Bayern had threatened from the kick-off when he struck clinically twice early in the second half after being set up by the outstanding Robert Lewandowski.

Lewandowski surely snuffed out any lingering hopes Chelsea had of a comeback when he finished off another sweeping attack, fed by the brilliant teenager Alphonso Davies.

As if this was not enough, Chelsea’s misery was compounded by defender Marcos Alonso being sent off late on after a clash with Lewandowski after the experienced Jorginho had been ruled out of the second leg when he received a silly yellow card for dissent.

  • Transfer: Chelsea move for Bayern’s David Alaba

Premier League side Chelsea are keen on a £60m move for Bayern Munich defender, David Alaba, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Blues boss, Frank Lampard, is looking to strengthen the left side of his defence in the January transfer window.

Lampard has been left unimpressed by his options in Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso.

Alaba, 27, has less than two years remaining on his deal with Bayern and Chelsea are ready to tempt him to move to England.

Alaba has made over 360 appearances for Bayern and is one of the most versatile members of their squad, having been played at left-back and in central defence this season.

Speaking about his future last month, the Austrian said: “I can imagine both: staying here or taking a different route.

“At the moment, however, we have goals here and I want to achieve them with Bayern Munich.”

  • Mourinho bans Tottenham players from watching replays of Bayern defeat

Mourinho bans Tottenham players from watching replays of Bayern defeat

Jose Mourinho has forbidden his Tottenham players from watching back their humiliating 7-2 defeat to Bayern Munich ahead of their match in Germany tonight.

Spurs, then managed by Mauricio Pochettino, suffered what was one of the heaviest defeats in their 137-year history back in October, despite having taken a first-half lead through Heung-min Son.

Two months on, and Mourinho has replaced Pochettino as manager and have qualified for the knockout stages of the competition.

But ahead of the reverse fixture of that devastating loss, Mourinho was asked whether he and his players have analysed the match – and if so, have the players been left scared by it.

“No, I forbid any image of it,” answered Mourinho. “I watched it a couple of times: me, my staff and analysts try to go through every single aspect of that but not one single image for the boys. No. Not at all. We’re going to focus more on us than on Bayern. “

“We’re going to try to develop our model of play, with different bodies, different phases, different players. But there is a certain way that we try to play football and try to develop our principles of play.

  • UCL: Pochettino calls for togetherness after Bayern defeat

Tottenham Manager, Mauricio Pochettino, says his team must “stay together” after a 7-2 defeat at home by Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Three goals in the last seven minutes rounded off a sorry evening for Tottenham, who led 1-0 only to fold in the closing stages.

The result left last year’s runners-up with one point from their first two matches and already facing a battle to make the knockout stages of the competition.

“It’s a tough situation, but you have to face it,’’ Pochettino told BT Sport.

“You have to be strong and keep going.

“We have to stay together and help each other.

“The best medicine is to be all together.’’

“When you receive this type of result, it’s important to believe in yourself.

“That is the only way to recover the good feeling,’’ the manager said.

Pochettino said he could not have foreseen the eventual result against Bayern after Spurs made a strong start.

“We dominated the game in the first 30 minutes.

“We were unlucky we were conceded at the end of the first half and after that, they were very clinical.

“After we scored the penalty for 4-2, we had chances to score a third and be in the game.

“It’s a tough result; It’s hard to accept.’’

Pochettino said Tottenham owed the fans a reaction when they play at Brighton on Saturday.

“We feel embarrassed for the result but we feel as bad as they feel, we’re very disappointed,’’ he said.

“But we need to be back together again because being together is the most important.’’

  • Gnabry hits four as Bayern Munich trounce Tottenham 7-2

Gnabry hits four as Bayern Munich trounce Tottenham 7-2

Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst home defeat in Europe as Serge Gnabry scored four times in Bayern Munich’s 7-2 romp to seize control of UEFA Champions League Group B on Tuesday.

Master marksman Robert Lewandowski also scored twice as Bayern responded to going behind in devastating fashion

When Son Heung-min gave last season’s runners-up Tottenham a deserved 12th minute lead, the home fans were buoyant.

But their hopes were crushed as Spurs leaked in seven goals at home for the first time in any major competition.

To make matters worse for Mauricio Pochettino’s shell-shocked side, it was Gnabry, a former Arsenal player, who was the architect of their humiliation.

In a rip-roaring start to the first clash between the sides for 35 years, Son had twice wasted guilt-edge opportunities before firing Tottenham in front.

But Tottenham’s lead lasted only three minutes as Joshua Kimmich’s superb long-range effort gave Hugo Lloris no chance.

Tottenham were still posing a threat in a wide-open game but three Bayern Munich goals in 10 minutes left their hopes of a first win in Group B in tatters.

Lewandowski has already bagged 10 goals in six Bundesliga games this season and showed why he is one of the world’s most-feared strikers as he beat Lloris with a shot on the turn seconds before the half-time.

If that was a cruel blow for Tottenham, what happened in the opening minutes of the second half was crushing.

Gnabry, who suffered several frustrating years at Arsenal, shredded Tottenham’s defence in the 53rd minute to score a breathtaking solo goal and struck again two minutes later.

Harry Kane’s penalty kick restored some hope for Tottenham on the hour after Danny Rose was adjudged to have been fouled.

But Bayern Munich were in ruthless mood.

Gnabry completed his hat-trick in the 83rd minute, racing on to Thiago Alcantara’s long ball and then wrong-footing Lloris with a classy finish.

With the home fans flooding towards the exits and Bayern Munich’s followers joyfully singing “football’s coming home”, the visitors piled on the agony.

Lewandowski was played in by Philippe Coutinho and he finished in deadly fashion.

With Tottenham’s defence AWOL again, Gnabry put Niko Kovac’s team in seventh heaven.

Bayern Munich lead Group B with six points from two games, with Tottenham on one.

Red Star Belgrade are second with three points after beating Olympiakos 3-1 in the group’s other match.(

  • Bundesliga: Bayern go top with victory at Paderborn

Bundesliga: Bayern go top with victory at Paderborn

Champions Bayern Munich went top of the Bundesliga as they won away at newly promoted Paderborn.

Robert Kovac’s side leapfrogged RB Leipzig, 3-1 losers at home to Schalke.

Serge Gnabry and Phillipe Coutinho put Bayern 2-0 up before Kai Proger responded for the hosts.

When Robert Lewandowski, who had missed a sitter, dinked in it meant he had scored in his first six games of the season, and Jamilu Collins’ thunderous strike proved only to be a consolation.

  • Bundesliga: Lewandowski double helps Bayern crush Cologne to go top

Bundesliga: Lewandowski double helps Bayern crush Cologne to go top

Bundesliga top scorer Robert Lewandowski scored twice to equal a 51-year-old record as champions Bayern Munich demolished Cologne 4-0 on Saturday to climb to the top spot of the standings.

Poland striker Lewandowski grabbed the first two goals.

And, after Cologne’s Kingsley Ehizibue was sent off, Philippe Coutinho converted a penalty to make it 3-0 and Ivan Perisic completed the rout with a low shot.

Lewandowski, who has been Bundesliga top scorer four times in the last six seasons, has now netted nine times in the opening five league matches.
He thus equalled a record set by Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Peter Mayer in the 1967-68 season.

Bayern are top on 11 points with RB Leipzig, on 10, facing Werder Bremen later on Saturday.

Borussia Dortmund, on nine, travel to Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.

  • Bayern Munich president Hoeness to retire in November

Uli Hoeness, the long-serving president of German football club Bayern Munich, is planning to retire and hand over his duties to a former Adidas chief executive in November.
According to German daily newspaper Bild on Wednesday, Hoeness will not stand for re-election as club president and intends to also quit his role as supervisory board chairman.
Bild is Germany’s largest-selling newspaper Bild, and it has proved credible in the past.
According to the report, Hoeness intends to hand over his duties as president to former Adidas CEO Herbert Hainer, who is already a member of the club’s supervisory board.
Bayern Munich was not immediately available for comment.
A World Cup and European Championship winner, Hoeness served the club as a player from 1970 to 1979 and took over as general manager, and later president, immediately after his career.
He is one of the wealthiest figures in German football.
His departure, along with Oliver Kahn’s planned take-over as general manager starting in 2022, will mark the beginning of a new era at the club.
In spite of the club’s hegemony in Germany in winning seven Bundesliga titles in a row, Bayern Munich have struggled to keep up at the international level.
After last winning the UEFA Champions League in 2013, Bayern Munich have failed to reach the final again.
Their elimination by eventual champions Liverpool in March in the round of 16 of the 2018/2019 season’s competition marked a recent low point.
Hoeness, aged 67, was re-elected in 2016 as club president after he had spent several months in prison for a multi-million euro tax evasion, a crime Hoeness admitted to German judges.

  • Arjen Robben announces retirement

Bayern Munchen legend Arjen Robben has announced his retirement from professional football.
The Netherlands captain, in a statement, on Thursday said: “It is without doubt the hardest decision I have had to make in my career.”
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid star has been plagued by injuries, making him miss most games in the 2018/2019 session.

  • Bayern coach confirms Lewandowski, Coman training ground fight

Bayern coach confirms Lewandowski, Coman training ground fight

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski and winger Kingsley Coman had a fist fight during training, boss Niko Kovac has confirmed.

The Croat says neither player will be punished following their clash on Thursday while preparing for Sunday’s Bundesliga match at Fortuna Dusseldorf.

“The three of us talked about it. The players are sorry and have apologised for their behaviour,” said Kovac.

“There will be no financial penalties and the matter has been resolved.”

Lewandowski is the leading scorer in the Bundesliga – with 21 goals – and joint top of the Champions League scoring charts with eight, although Bayern were eliminated by Liverpool in the last 16.

The German champions went top of the league by one point last weekend by beating previous leaders Borussia Dortmund 5-0.
