  • Manuel Neuer to return for Germany against Austria

Bayern Munich Goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer will make his return to action in Germany’s pre-World Cup friendly match with Austria on Saturday, goalkeeping coach Andreas Koepke has said.

“As it stands, Manuel will play,” Koepke told journalists Tuesday at the team training camp in Eppan, Italy. “This is a real test. These are the games he needs.”

Neuer, 32, missed the majority of the season for Bayern Munich with a broken foot and has not played for Germany since October 2016. He did play 30 minutes in a Monday training game, however, as Germany routed their under-20 side 7-1.

Coach Joachim Loew has given his number one and captain every chance to prove his fitness for the World Cup in Russia, which starts June 14, but must submit his final 23-man squad to governing body FIFA on Monday – meaning the Austria fixture in Klagenfurt is crucial for Neuer.

“Afterwards we have to use our instinct with Manuel, if it’s a go or not,” said Koepke.

Meanwhile, forwards Mario Gomez and Leroy Sane had differing days as the latter led his team to victory in a small training tournament while the former had to do regeneration work.

Gomez, 32, trained away from the rest of the group as did defender Jerome Boateng as he continues his recovery from a thigh injury.

Sane on the other hand twice scored the only goal in two ‘final’ games as his Blue Team won a six-a-side competition.

Mats Hummels led the White Team, defeated in the final while Thomas Mueller, in a team with Neuer, was tournament top scorer with three goals.

  • Frank Ribery signs one-year extension

    Frank Ribery signs one-year extension

Franck Ribery has signed a new one-year deal with German champions Bayern Munich.

Ribery is out-of-contract in the summer, and was widely expected to leave the German champions, but has opted to remain in Munich for what will be his 12th year with the club.

The 35-year-old winger, who joined Bayern from French side Marseille in 2007, has scored 117 goals in 385 appearances for the Bundesliga champions.

In a statement, Ribery said: “I am very happy to be able to play another year for this great club. Munich has long since become a home for my family and for me.

“I am therefore very proud to be able to wear the jersey of Bayern for the new season.”

Ribery has become the fifth player in Bayern’s history to win eight Bundesliga titles joining Oliver Kahn, Mehmet Scholl, Phillip Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Bayern are still waiting to hear if Arjen Robben will follow Ribery in signing a new deal, with the Dutchman, who is currently injured, still weighing up the club’s latest offer.

  • BREAKING: Real Madrid through to three consecutive finals after beating Bayern

Defending champions, Real Madrid are through to the third consecutive finals of the UEFA champions league after defeating Bayern Munich 4-3 on aggregate at Santiago Bernabua.

Joshua Kimmich scored early on for the German champions from six yards out, before Karim Benzema headed in for Real from Marcelo’s fine left-wing cross eight minutes later.

A second for Benzema, after a horrendous mistake from Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, put Real in control, although Bayern’s on-loan James Rodriguez then scored against his parent club to set up a dramatic finale.

Bayern had chances to win it, but Corentin Tolisso and Thomas Muller’s efforts were saved by Keylor Navas and Mats Hummels headed wide as the Spanish side held on.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos made six clearances in the first half, more than all of Bayern Munich’s players combined (five).

Real will face either Liverpool or Roma in the final in Kiev, Ukraine, on 26 May with Jurgen Klopp’s side leading 5-2 before Wednesday’s second leg in Rome.

Navas produced heroics at the other end to turn a vicious deflected Alaba effort behind, and Ramos was again fortunate not to concede a penalty after another challenge on Lewandowski.

The tie should have been put to bed by Ronaldo, but he blazed Marcelo’s cross wide with a close-range volley.

And that miss soon loomed large as James gave Bayern hope once more, following up his blocked volley from Nikas Sule’s cross and firing through Navas’ legs at the near post.
Navas had to get down low to keep out a Muller header as Madrid’s nerves were further jangled, but a defence that never looked secure withstood the pressure to put Los Blancos within 90 minutes of a fourth European crown in five seasons.

  • Champions League: Real Madrid v Bayern preview, stats

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has said his side will look to attack Bayern Munich quickly in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final, second leg as they seek to remain on course for an unprecedented third consecutive European Cup.

“The key for us is think about winning the game and go onto the pitch wanting to do that. We need to go out to score quickly and that’s what we’ll try to do,” Zidane told a news conference.

Meanwhile, Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes has defended top-scorer Robert Lewandowski following his lack of Champions League goals.

“Lewy has my complete support. Every striker, including myself, has phases where they don’t score,” said Heynckes at his pre-match press conference.

“But he has scored a lot of goals this season and you can’t forget that he once scored four goals against Real in the semi-final of the Champions League for Dortmund.

“So who knows what’ll happen tomorrow?”

Real should have playmaker Isco available after the Spain international trained on Monday having recovered from a shoulder problem.

But right-back Carvajal is set to miss out after injuring his hamstring in Wednesday’s first leg at the Allianz Arena.

Meanwhile, Bayern will be without wide man Robben and defender Boateng after the duo picked up injuries in last week’s first leg.

However, both left-back Alaba (thigh) and midfielder Martinez (head) should feature after recovering from thigh and head knocks, respectively.

    Opta stats

No team has ever overturned a 2-1 home first-leg defeat in the Champions League, in seven previous such occurrences.

Bayern Munich and Real Madrid will meet for the 26th time in European competition, more than any other fixture. Real Madrid have now won 12 of these encounters to Bayern’s 11 victories (2 draws).

Bayern Munich have lost their last six games against Real Madrid (all in the knockout stages of the Champions League), their longest ever run of defeats against one opponent in European competition. Their last away win against Real was in May 2001, in the Champions League semis (1-0, goal by Giovane Elber).

Real Madrid have scored in each of their last 41 Champions League games at the Bernabeu, last failing to find the net in April 2011 against Barcelona (0-2). In that run, they’ve won 34 games, drawn five and lost only two, including their latest outing against Juventus in this year’s quarter-finals (1-3).

Under Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid have never been knocked out in the Champions League, progressing in all eight of their two-legged Champions League ties as well as winning the two finals they’ve appeared in. They’ve also won seven of their eight knockout games at home.

  • Champions League: Real Madrid cruise past Bayern in semi-final first leg

Defending champion Real Madrid took control of their Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich with victory in the first leg at the Allianz Arena.

The holders, attempting to win the competition for the third successive season, struggled defensively but were clinical in attack – and Marcelo and Marco Asensio scored either side of half-time.

Marcelo smashed home a half-volley from the edge of the penalty area to level matters before Asensio capitalised on an error by Rafinha to score a breakaway goal.

Joshua Kimmich had put Bayern in front when he slotted past Keylor Navas at the near post.

The German champions missed a host of chances in an error-strewn encounter, while Real forward Cristiano Ronaldo had a goal ruled out for handball as his run of scoring in every game of this year’s competition ended.

Bayern must now score at least twice at the Bernabeu next Tuesday to prevent Real reaching a fourth final in five years.

  • Bayern v Madrid: Rodriguez revenge, Madrid have suffered at the hands of ex-players

Bayern Munich midfielder James Rodriguez wants to add his name to the list of Real Madrid players who have been jilted by the Spanish club and taken their revenge in the Champions League.

The Colombia midfielder faces the club that let him go out on loan last summer and what better way to show them what a mistake they made than to knock them out of their favourite competition?

Rodriguez won two Champions League medals with Madrid and a league title but he fell out of favour with Zinedine Zidane last season and Bayern Munich have taken him on a two-year loan deal that they look set to make permanent.

If Rodriguez puts Madrid out he will be following in the footsteps of Fernando Morientes and Alvaro Morata who did the same when at Monaco and Juventus.

Spain centre-forward Morientes was a big favourite with team-mates and fans at the Santiago Bernabeu but he was loaned to Monaco in the 2003-04 season.

He faced Madrid in the quarter-finals and scored a late goal in the first leg at the Bernabeu to make the score 4-2 in Madrid’s favour.

The goal was generously applauded by home supporters still fond of Morientes – little did they know he would go on to knock them out.

He scored again in the second leg and with a 3-1 home win Monaco went through and Real Madrid, with Ronaldo and Raul up front, went out.

History repeated itself in the 2014-15 season with Morata. He had been sold to Juventus with a buy-back clause and the two teams met in the semi-final.

Morata scored in the first leg that ended 2-1 to Juventus. Cristiano Ronaldo scored for Real Madrid in the second leg but Morata scored an equaliser on the night that sent the Italians through on aggregate.

Madrid often put what is called in Spain: a fear clause, into loan deals in La Liga that prevent players who have been loaned out to other clubs playing against them.

But that cannot happen in the Champions League and the Spanish club are now hoping Rodriguez does not make them pay for letting him go last summer.

Real Madrid say the midfielder they signed in 2014 could end up costing the German club 42 million euros (51 million dollars) if they sign him permanently, plus 13 million euros in loan fees.

But his form this season suggests he will be worth the money.

He has six goals and 12 assists in 34 games in all competitions and has won over new Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes.

Real Madrid are hoping anything Rodriguez does, Cristiano Ronaldo can do better.

He has scored 26 goals in 22 matches against German opposition with nine of those goals coming in six games against Bayern Munich.

Bayern defender Jerome Boateng is well aware of the threat. He told Kicker: “No striker could be more complete than Ronaldo. He can score with his right, his left or his head. He is a machine.”

Ronaldo and Rodriguez were team-mates at Real Madrid last season. Whoever comes out on top in the next two games could decide which team reaches the final.

  • Champions League semi-finals: Liverpool v Roma, Bayern Munich v Real Madrid

Liverpool will play Roma in the Champions League semi-finals, with Bayern Munich facing Real Madrid.

The Reds, who beat Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate in the last round, will host Roma on Tuesday, 24 April with the return leg on Wednesday, 2 May.

Arsenal will face Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals, while Red Bull Salzburg meet Marseille.

The Gunners will play the first leg at home on Thursday, 26 April, with the second leg a week later on 3 May.

The Europa League final will be in Lyon, France on Wednesday, 16 May, with the winner guaranteed a place in next season’s Champions League.

The Champions League final will be held in Kiev, Ukraine on Saturday, 26 May.

Liverpool, Champions League winners in 2005, have not faced Roma in a competitive match since March 2002.

The Reds’ top scorer Mohamed Salah will face the club he left for £34m in the summer.

Roma are fourth in Serie A – 21 points behind leaders Juventus.

They staged a remarkable comeback to beat Barcelona 3-0 on Wednesday and win their quarter-final on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate draw.

“If anybody thinks this is the easiest draw then I cannot help this person,” said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

“They obviously didn’t see both games against Barcelona. In the first result, 4-1 was not how the game was – it was Lionel Messi genius against a good side of Roma.

“The second leg was outstanding, it was outstanding what they did. They should have probably won 4-0 or 5-0 – I was really impressed.

“It is just the draw and I know it is very exciting, but it is good because the most important news is we are still in the competition.”

  • Champions League: Bayern must be careful against Sevilla – Robben

Bayern Munich must not be complacent against Sevilla in the home leg of their Champions League quarter-final, says winger Arjen Robben.

German champions Bayern, who won 2-1 in Seville last week, are aiming to reach a seventh European semi-final in nine years.

Sevilla knocked Manchester United out in the previous round.

“We need to be careful,” said Robben. “They did brilliantly in Manchester and we know we have to perform.”

French striker Wissam Ben Yedder scored both goals in Sevilla’s shock 2-1 win at Old Trafford last month after a goalless draw in Spain.

Bayern has been knocked out by a Spanish team in each of the four seasons since they last won the Champions League in 2012-13.

“A 2-1 win away from home is always great, but it’s not the same as 5-0 against Besiktas,” said Robben, referring to their first-leg win in the last 16.

Germany defender Jerome Boateng, 29, is fit for Bayern despite bruising a foot in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Augsburg, which sealed a sixth successive Bundesliga title.

Left-back David Alaba, back in training after a back injury, and midfielder Arturo Vidal, who has a knock, are unlikely to play.

Robert Lewandowski, who has scored 35 goals in 39 games this season, Franck Ribery, Joshua Kimmich, Corentin Tolisso, Jerome Boateng and Sebastian Rudy, are one yellow card away from missing a potential semi-final.

Sevilla, without a win in four games since shocking Manchester United, welcome Argentina midfielder Ever Banega back from suspension.

Head coach Vincenzo Montella is under pressure following a 4-0 league defeat at Celta Vigo on Saturday.

“The impossible things might become possible if you believe – and I still believe,” he Montella

  • Bayern Munich clinch sixth consecutive league title

Bayern Munich clinch sixth consecutive league title

German champions Bayern Munich came from behind to wrap up their sixth consecutive Bundesliga title with a 4-1 win over Augsburg.

Jupp Heynckes’ side picked up the Bavarian derby win they needed to become champions with five games to spare.

They had trailed through Niklas Sule’s own goal but Corentin Tolisso and James Rodriguez set them on their way towards a 28th German championship.

Arjen Robben converted Rodriguez’s cut-back and Sandro Wagner headed a fourth.

Treble-chasing Bayern rested a host of players with Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sevilla in mind. Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Thiago, Franck Ribery, Mats Hummels and Javi Martinez were all on the bench.

They had looked in trouble when Sven Ulreich’s parried save hit Sule and flew into their own net. But Tolisso headed in Joshua Kimmich’s cross and Rodriguez then smashed home from close range.

Robben’s powerful third – his 95th Bundesliga goal – confirmed the victory – and Wagner completed the rout late on.

  • Sevilla v Bayern Munich preview: First Champions League quarter-final first leg game

Sevilla and Bayern Munich will meet for the first time in European competition as they play the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

The Germans are on the cusp on yet another Bundesliga title after their 6-0 demolition of Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, but their recent record in Spain is poor, having lost on all five of their last trips to the country and having been eliminated by a Spanish club in the competition in each of the last four seasons.

“We need to score goals, especially away against them,” said Bayern winger Arjen Robben. “It will be a fierce game. They are very strong at home and with their fans it will be a sizzling atmosphere. We need to be at the top of our game.”

Sevilla are undefeated in their 11 home games against German clubs, but will be making their first appearance in the Champions League quarter-finals and manager Vincenzo Montella is hoping the experience will only improve his squad.

“When you’re in this kind of competition, opponents demand a lot of your mental and physical energy,” he told a pre-match press conference.

“We paid for it in La Liga but I like this situation and I think we’re used to playing every three days against top opponents. It helps us reach a better level so we can take advantage of the talent of the team.

“Bayern are accustomed to scoring a lot of goals, to having the ball. We have to do the same so we make them do things they’re not used to.”

    Team news

Bayern have included Arturo Vidal and Juan Bernat in their squad after the pair passed late fitness tests.

Coach Jupp Heynckes will have the luxury of an almost full squad to chose from, apart from Manuel Neuer (foot) and Kingsley Coman, who has been out with an ankle problem since late February.

Sevilla knocked out Man Utd in the last round to reach out their first ever Champions League quarter-final

Ever Banega is suspended for Sevilla and will not feature, while Montella has questions marks over the fitness of Gabriel Mercado and Jesus Navas.
