Bundesliga: Bayern Munich makes U-turn, set to retain Tuchel as manager

German side, Bayern Munich are open to retaining Thomas Tuchel as manager, despite agreeing to leave at the end of the season, according to report on ESPN.

It would be recalled that the former Chelsea and PSG boss announced back in February, that he would leave the Bundesliga club this summer after Bayern churned out poor results consecutively.

However,  Bayern have been rejected by potential replacements including Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick.

This has led to the former German champions holding talks with Tuchel about the possibility of staying on.

Tuchel also have the backing of the fans to stay back at the German side.

Tuchel has been linked with a move to Manchester United, but he fears he might not get the job even if Erik ten Hag leaves.

He however remains open to holding formal talks with United if negotiations break down with Bayern and a vacancy comes up at Old Trafford.

UCL: Real Madrid stun Bayern with two late goals to reach final

Real Madrid snatched an incredible semi-final victory as two late goals defeated Bayern Munich and set up a Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern looked to be heading to the final when Alphonso Davies cut in and blasted past Andriy Lunin after England captain Harry Kane had found him with a superb pass.

But Joselu grabbed an 88th-minute equaliser when he reacted quickest after Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who had been excellent up until then, fumbled Vinicius Jr’s effort.

There was even more drama to come two minutes later when Joselu, a former Stoke City striker, swept home from six yards after Antonio Rudiger’s square pass.

The goal was initially ruled offside, only for a video assistant referee (VAR) decision to show that Joselu was onside, sparking incredible scenes of celebration in the Bernabeu, with Real hanging on to win 4-3 on aggregate.

Real, 14-time European champions, will face Dortmund on Saturday, 1 June at Wembley.

There was controversy in the 13th minute of injury time at the end of the second half as Bayern’s Matthijs de Ligt thought he had taken the game to extra time.

A ball was played up to Noussair Mazraoui and the assistant referee’s flag was raised for offside, with a number of Real defenders stopping before Bayern’s De Ligt fired into the net.

Television replays suggested the original decision may not have been correct and that had the flag not been raised it would have needed to be checked by VAR, with Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel and a number of players including Kane and fellow Englishman Eric Dier strongly protesting against the decision.

UCL: Bayern’s Harry Kane smashes Champions League record

England and Bayern Munich forward, Harry Kane on Tuesday broke a UEFA Champions League record after scoring a goal in his side’s semi-final first leg 2-2 draw with Real Madrid.

Kane scored from the spot to put Bayern up 2-1 as both teams eventually drew 2-2 at the Allianz Arena.

During the encounter, Kane held his nerve to convert from 12 yards, taking his incredible tally to 43 goals in 43 games for Bayern Munich in all competitions in his phenomenal debut season.

However, Kane’s goal against Madrid meant the England captain broke the record for the most goal contributions (11) by an English player in a single Champions League campaign after eight goals and three assists in the competition this season.

The former Tottenham Hotspur star has now surpassed the likes of Steven Gerrard (10) and David Beckham (10).

Kane will now hope to lead Bayern to victory when they face Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the return leg next week.

UCL: Vini Jnr grabs brace as Real Madrid force Bayern Munchen to a 2-2 draw at Alianz Arena

Brazil forward, Vinicius Junior grabbed a brace as Real Madrid came from behind to share the spoils in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie with Bayern Munich at Alianz Arena.

Vini Jnr latched on to a through pass from teammate after beating  an onrushing defender with pace before a shot past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for the opener, before the South Korean fouled Rodrygo in the box and Vinicius put away the resulting penalty.

German player, Leroy Sane wriggled past a Real Madrid defender and sent a thunderous shot that beat goalie Andriy Lunin early in the second half.

Few minutes later, Jamal Musiala was tripped by Lucas Vazquez in the box and Harry Kane stepped up to convert the resultant penalty for Bayern second goal of the night.

Bayern dominated possesion in the first half but failed to take advantage  before Vinicius was played in behind by a clever Toni Kroos through ball.

Having had six shots and over 60% possession in the first 20 minutes – the best of the chances falling to Sane and Kane – Bayern were behind against the run of play.

The reverse fixture will be played at Real Madrid’s home ground Santiago Bernabeu next week.

Bayern have now turned to Zidane, after they were turned down by Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso.

Zidane has not coached since the end of 2020/21, when he left his role as the coach of Real Madrid of Spain.

But he recently revealed that he wants to return to the bench and Bayern Munich could be his next destination.

  • UCL: Ferdinand predicts outcome of Bayern vs Arsenal at Alianz Arena

UCL: Ferdinand predicts outcome of Bayern vs Arsenal at Alianz Arena

Rio Ferdinand a former Manchester United defender, has tipped  Bayern Munich to qualify ahead of Arsenal for the Champions League semi-final

Arsenal will travel to Germany to play Bayern Munich at the Alianz Arena on Wednesday.

The Gunners will be hoping to progress to the last four of the competition for the first time since 2009.

First leg ended 2-2 at the Emirate with Arsenal coming from behind to snatch a draw late in the game.

However it was a contrasting fortunes for both teams in their leagues as Arsenal lost at home to Aston Villa while Bayern defeated Koln 1-0

Ahead of the return leg in Munich, Ferdinand said: “I think it’s advantage Bayern Munich.

“Bayern are at home and have all that experience in Europe.

“Arsenal could win but it’s advantage Bayern for me.”

  • Bayern Munich showdown is perfect game for Arsenal to hit back – Rice

Bayern Munich showdown is perfect game for Arsenal to hit back – Rice

Declan Rice believes a Champions League quarter-final clash with Bayern Munich is the “perfect” game for Arsenal to overcome defeat to Aston Villa.

The Gunners were deservedly beaten 2-0 by Unai Emery’s men at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon as Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins scored the goals to boost Villa’s top-four hopes.

Arsenal would have returned to the Premier League summit with a win but now sit second, two points behind reigning champions Manchester City.

There is no time for Mikel Arteta’s players to lick their wounds, however, as they travel to Germany for the second leg of their finely-poised Champions League quarter-final against Bayern.

A 2-2 draw in north London last week leaves the tie on a knife-edge and Rice feels such a big game is just what Arsenal need after a rare slip-up.

“It’s the perfect game for a reaction,” he said.

“We need a reaction on Wednesday night and it is a great chance to show our character and leadership. It’s time to go out there and hopefully get into the semi-finals of the Champions League.

“We have to park this to the side now. It’s gone, it’s a game of football. We’ve lost but we need to bounce back, that’s for sure.

“Going to the Allianz Arena, it’s going to be a special night. It’s time to pull our socks up and show everyone why we’re in this position.”

This was former Arsenal boss Emery’s first trip back to the Emirates Stadium as Villa manager and the Spaniard severely dented the title charge of his old club.

Two key Bayern players resume training ahead of Arsenal clash

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and winger Leroy Sané returned to Bayern Munich team training on Monday, according to broadcasters Sky.

Both players were rested against Cologne on Saturday, but are expected to be available for the Champions League quarter-finals return leg against Arsenal on Wednesday.

The tie is locked at 2-2 and the Champions League is Bayern’s last chance at silverware this season, after Bayer Leverkusen ended the Bavarians’ 11-year reign as Bundesliga champions on Sunday.

France’s Kingley Coman is out after he suffered yet another leg muscle injury in Saturday’s 2-0 Bundesliga win against Cologne.

  • UCL: Kane returns to haunt Arsenal as Bayern Munich earn 2-2 draw

UCL: Kane returns to haunt Arsenal as Bayern Munich earn 2-2 draw

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane returned to north London to score his customary goal against Arsenal, as the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie ended 2-2 on Tuesday.

The former Tottenham Hotspur player, so often Arsenal’s nemesis in north London derbies, stroked home a penalty in the 32nd minute as the Bundesliga side hit back to lead 2-1.

Premier League leaders Arsenal, playing in their first Champions League quarter-final for 14 years, had gone in front early on with a clinical Bukayo Saka strike.

But Bayern, whose reign as German champions is as good as over as they trail Bayer Leverkusen by 16 points, showed they remain a European force to be reckoned with.

Arsenal were stunned as their former striker Serge Gnabry levelled six minutes later and Kane rolled home his 39th goal of an incredible first season for Bayern.

This was after Leroy Sane was brought down by William Saliba in the box.

Mikel Arteta’s side ensured they will head to Bavaria next Wednesday full of hope as substitute Leandro Trossard equalised in the 76th minute to leave the tie hanging in the balance.

The return of Kane, who scored a record 14 goals for Tottenham in the north London derby, to one of his favourite haunts was the big pre-match talking point.

And he duly silenced the Arsenal jeers.

“It wasn’t an easy game,” Kane said. “Arsenal are a really good team.

“They’re top of the Premier League right now so we had to dig deep at times but it’s a good result and hopefully we can make the difference at home.”

Predictably, Kane was booed every time he touched the ball although the England captain was hardly involved in the early exchanges as Arsenal seized the initiative.

Six-time champions Bayern, seeking salvation in Europe after a poor domestic season, were handicapped by having no fans inside the Emirates Stadium as punishment for their supporters throwing fireworks in the previous round.

They went behind in the 12th minute when Ben White played the ball inside to Saka who picked his spot and curled a low left-footed shot beyond Manuel Neuer.

White should have made it 2-0 soon afterwards but shot straight at Neuer and then Arsenal’s defence, so impregnable in the Premier League of late, suddenly went missing.

They carelessly lost possession in the 18th minute and Bayern punished them as Leon Goretzka fed a perfect pass to Gnabry who clipped a finish past the on-rushing David Raya.

Sane was then allowed to run and run from deep before being toppled by Saliba and referee Glenn Nyberg had the simplest decision to point to the penalty spot.

The 60,000 crowd suddenly went quiet as memories of heavy European defeats by Bayern, notably a 10-2 aggregate defeat in the last 16 in 2017, flooded back.

It would have gotten worse but for a goal-saving tackle by White on Sane.

Bayern, with another former Spurs player Eric Dier impressive in defence, looked comfortable after the break.

Arteta sent on Trossard and Gabriel Jesus just past the midway point of the second half. They combined in the 76th minute as Jesus fed Trossard to slot a low shot inside the post.

A frantic ending saw Bayern substitute Kingsley Coman strike the post from close range while the game ended with Arsenal screaming for a penalty.

This was after Saka went down in the area claiming he was fouled by Neuer.

“We’ve got a draw so the situation is clear, the winner moves on,” Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel said.

“We need the same devotion, passion and quality as we had tonight – and we’ll get through.”

Security was stepped up ahead of the game after Islamic State threatened drone attacks on Europe’s top club tournament.

  • Two Arsenal players risk suspension ahead of Bayern clash

Two Arsenal players risk suspension ahead of Bayern clash

Arsenal duo of Kai Havertz and Declan Rice are walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of the Champions League quarter-final first-leg against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

Havertz and Rice are both one booking away from suspension.

If either of the two players receives a yellow card at the Emirates, they will be banned from playing in the second leg at the Allianz Arena.

Gunners boss, Mikel Arteta, will be hoping that isn’t the game as Rice and Havertz have been key to their fine season.

Bayern is faced with a similar problem themselves. Were either Alphonso Davies or Leon Goretzka to pick up yellow cards, then they too would be out of action for the return leg on March 17.

All yellow cards accumulated over the course of the competition are wiped after the quarter-final stage, to prevent players from missing the final through too many yellow cards.
