Just in: Nigerian Govt to ban beer parlours, others

The Lagos state government is considering prohibiting beer parlors and other drinking establishments from operating near or surrounding school environment

Before implementation, the state is also continuing discussing with relevant stakeholders on the 65-year retirement age policy, as opposed to the current 60-year retirement age for teachers in state employment.

Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, the state’s Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, made this indication during a question and answer session during a media briefing for the present National Council on Education meeting in the state.

He explained that the proposal to ban beer parlours from operating near schools is part of the move by the state government to nip in the bud or reduce to the barest minimum cases of drug abuse and other vices, particularly among children, and adolescents in the state.

According to him, it has been observed that the selling of hard drugs and the rest are more or less being carried out around businesses and ghettos which do not augur well for the society.

“We have also come up with safety clubs in schools in which we are partnering with the security agencies such as the police, Nigerian Immigration Service, Customs services, traditional rulers, CDAs, CDCs and more.

“We have passed the message across and we are acting as an interface. Even last month, we held a meeting with all the necessary stakeholders and we are looking forward to more.

He disclosed that ‘War Against Drug Abuse’ had been launched in schools in Epe as an example of community partnering with the police and other security agencies to campaign against drug abuse and other social vices.

“We’re not stopping there; it’s a collaborative effort. We are raising our voices against the negative impacts of drug abuse in our society.

“So, we are looking for all avenues to change the narrative and part of the proposal not to have beer parlours around schools again.

“We believe that if students see, watch and move around people who drink alcoholic substances or smoke and all that, they may be tempted or influenced to want to do the same. We don’t need to wait for such to happen before we arrest the situation.”

The commissioner, however, pointed out that the matter is still a proposal to be subjected to legislation before it becomes the state government’s policy and when that would be, is still unknown.

Free beer, doughnuts in US to promote acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines

Free beer, free doughnuts, savings bonds — government officials and businesses are teaming up to encourage Americans to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

President Joe Biden wants 70 percent of adults to have received at least one shot by Independence Day on July 4 and overcoming vaccine hesitancy is key to reaching the goal.

“We know there are millions of Americans who need a little bit of encouragement to get the shot,” Biden told reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

Some 56 percent of American adults — more than 145 million people — have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine but the pace of vaccination has been declining lately.

Federal, state and local officials are partnering with pharmacies, restaurants, breweries, supermarkets and sports teams to come up with incentives to get people to get their shots.

In New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy launched a “Shot and a Beer” program to encourage vaccination.

“Any New Jerseyan who gets their first vaccine dose in the month of May and takes their vaccination card to a participating brewery will receive a free beer,” Murphy tweeted.

The offer is only open, of course, to residents of the “Garden State” who are over the age of 21, the legal drinking age in the United States.

Governor Ned Lamont of the state of Connecticut unveiled a similar “Free Drink” promotion with participating restaurants last month.

In Washington, Mayor Muriel Bowser urged residents of the nation’s capital to “come get vaccinated and grab a beer, on us” at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Berlin launches ‘World’s longest beer garden’

As Berlin experiences sustained summer temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius, the City on Friday launched a weekend of beer-drinking at the International Beer Festival at the Central boulevard.

The “world’s longest beer garden,’’ as the organisers dub it, stretches along the Karl Marx Allee between Strausberger Platz and Frankfurter Tor and runs until Sunday.

A total of 2,400 beers from 350 breweries from around the world including focus country New Zealand, hence this year’s motto “Beers from the other side of the world’’ will be on offer, the organisers said.

In addition to the beer, live music at 19 stages along the route is expected to draw more than 800,000 visitors to the festival, which has no entry fee.

The temperatures have prompted doctors to urge caution. “Alcohol enters the bloodstream more quickly in the heat,’’ Peter Sefrin, an emergency doctor with the German Red Cross, said.

The more alcohol a drink contains, the more striking the effect; alcohol also reaches the brain more quickly in the heat, affecting concentration and allowing euphoria to take hold.

“A typical consequence is impaired self-awareness. This often leads to an overestimation of one’s abilities and arrogance: People often do things they would never do otherwise,’’ Sefrin said.

“We don’t want to take away people’s enjoyment of a refreshing beer,’’ Hannes Dietrich of the health insurance company Kaufmaennische Krankenkasse said, but he added that drinking too much alcohol in hot weather can lead to dizziness and even a loss of consciousness.
