Euro 2020: Lukaku pays tribute to Eriksen after netting brace

Romelu Lukaku paid tribute to his Inter Milan team-mate Christian Eriksen after scoring against Russia to help world number one side Belgium start Euro 2020 with a win.

Denmark midfielder Eriksen collapsed on the pitch earlier on Saturday in the Group B game with Finland and received emergency treatment on the field.

There was some doubt as to whether Belgium’s game with Russia – Denmark’s group rivals – in St Petersburg would go ahead as scheduled because of events in Copenhagen before it was given the all-clear after the Danish Football Association revealed Eriksen was “awake” in hospital.

Lukaku opened the scoring after pouncing on a mistake by Andrey Semenov and celebrated his goal by shouting “Chris, Chris, I love you” in front of a television camera.

Roberto Martinez’s side added to their lead before half-time after substitute Thomas Meunier – an early replacement for injured Leicester defender Timothy Castagne – slotted home when Anton Shunin failed to hold a cross.

In-form Lukaku added a late third with a composed finish to seal a comfortable win.

The victory put Belgium, one of the fancied teams at Euro 2020, top of the group, level on points with Finland, who beat Denmark in a game which was suspended following Eriksen’s collapse before being re-started.

Why Onuachu is Nigeria’s best player – Ezeji

Former Nigeria striker Victor Ezeji has named Paul Onuachu as Nigeria’s best player in the 2020-21 season because of the number of goals he scored in the Belgian First Division A.

Onuachu scored 33 goals in 38 league appearances for Genk as they finished second behind champions Club Brugge on the table, and he also helped them win the Belgian Cup.

Thanks to his individual brilliance, the 27-year-old became the fifth Nigerian to win the Ebony shoe (Best African player in Belgium) after Daniel Amokachi (1992 and 1994), Victor Ikpeba (1993), Godwin Okpara (1995), and Celestine Babayaro (1996).

“Onuachu is my best Nigerian player this season, for him to have scored that number of goals in Belgium shows class even though we might say the league is not up to the top five leagues in Europe, to score goals in Nigeria is difficult talkless of Europe,” Ezeji told Goal.

  • La Liga: ‘Hazard has switched off again at Real Madrid’

La Liga: ‘Hazard has switched off again at Real Madrid’

Eden Hazard has “switched off” again at Real Madrid, according to Tony Cascarino, who says the ex-Chelsea star is failing to live up to his “great” potential.

Madrid invested €100 million (£90m/$118m) in Hazard’s talents in the summer of 2019, having seen him become one of Europe’s most effective wingers during his seven-year stay at Stamford Bridge.

The Belgium international scored 110 goals in 352 outings for Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles, two Europa League crowns and the FA Cup in the process, but has so far been unable to reach the same heights at Santiago Bernabeu.

Although Hazard did manage to become a Liga winner in his first season with the Blancos, he only scored once in 16 domestic outings amid persistent struggles for form and fitness.

Those issues have continued at the start of the 2020-21 campaign, with Cascarino of the opinion that the ex-Blues talisman has allowed his standards to slip.

The former Chelsea forward says Hazard was guilty of doing the same throughout his time in west London, with a lack of consistency preventing him from nailing down a place among the greatest players in history.

“Eden Hazard is an incredibly gifted player, but he’s had a really difficult time since he went to Real Madrid for that huge fee,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

“Injuries and obviously the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t helped him, it’s affected his career, but what a talent he can be for Belgium.

“He went to Real Madrid to become the best player in the world, he even mentioned that, he talked about that when he joined Madrid, but what a difficult time he’s had since he’s joined. It’s been really hard on him. He’s found it tough.

“Obviously injuries have played a huge part in it, he went to Real Madrid and apparently was a tad overweight, he lost his confidence, but he seems to recovered his fitness of late.

“Belgium miss him. I can remember his performance against Brazil in the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup, it was him and Neymar both out on the right and Hazard outplayed Neymar all night. He was just superb.

“I really miss seeing Hazard being Hazard, because he is a great player when he’s on.

“He has done this a couple of times, he has switched off in his career and Chelsea fans will tell you. There were a couple of times where he just switched off at Chelsea.

“But when he switches on he’s up there with the best players who have ever played the game.

“We just haven’t seen Hazard at a best for a long time.”

  • Nations League: England beat world’s top-ranked team Belgium

Nations League: England beat world’s top-ranked team Belgium

England came from behind to overcome the world’s top-ranked team Belgium and record an important Nations League victory at Wembley.

Belgium took a lead their early superiority deserved when Romelu Lukaku sent England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford the wrong way after the striker had been brought down by Eric Dier’s poor challenge.

England were on the back foot for most of the first half but were handed a lifeline back into the game six minutes before half-time when captain Jordan Henderson went down very easily in a tussle with Thomas Meunier, Marcus Rashford scoring from the spot.

Gareth Southgate’s side enjoyed much more possession after the break but needed a large slice of luck to take the lead after 64 minutes, Mason Mount’s effort deflecting off Toby Alderweireld and looping over keeper Simon Mignolet to inflict Belgium’s first loss since November 2018.

  • I have had the worst season of my career – Hazard

I have had the worst season of my career – Hazard

Eden Hazard has admitted to having mixed emotions after Real Madrid’s La Liga triumph, insisting the 2019-20 campaign has been “the worst season” of his career to date.

Much was expected of Hazard when he completed a €100 million (£91m/$114m) move to Santiago Bernabeu from Chelsea last summer.

The Belgium international was initially seen as the natural successor to Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Juventus in 2018, but he hasn’t quite been able to live up to that billing during his debut season in La Liga.

He told France Info: “This year, we collectively won this league title, but I have surely had the worst season of my career individually.”

Belgium top as Super Eagles retain 31st position in FIFA ranking

The Super Eagles of Nigeria has retained the number 31 position worldwide according to the latest ranking by world football’s governing body, FIFA.

According to the new FIFA Coca-cola rankings released every month and published on FIFA’s official website, the Super Eagles of Nigeria coached by Gernot Rohr is 31st in the world and third in Africa, behind Senegal.

Senegal, Africa’s number one team, are 20th in the world while Tunisia remain number two in Africa and 27th in the world.

According to the new ranking, Belgium is the number one team in the world while world cup winners France are number two. Brazil is number three while England is fourth.

Some minor movement in the top 50 sees Wales (23rd, down 1) and Paraguay (41st, down 1) each fall down a spot, while Ghana (46th, up 1) rise ever so slightly.

Palestine (103rd, up 3) are the first biggest climbers of 2020. The AFC side’s success in January’s Bangabandhu Cup sees them leapfrog Estonia, Trinidad and Tobago, Mozambique and Kenya as they secured the biggest move by points and rank.

Beaten Bangabandhu Cup finalists Burundi (149, up 2), who like Palestine contested four matches in January, move into the top 150.

Elsewhere, Aruba (200, up 1) and Pakistan (200, up 1) managed to improve on their respective positions amidst a rather quiet month in international football.

Belgium become first nation to qualify for Euro 2020

Belgium became the first team to qualify for Euro 2020 as Romelu Lukaku scored twice in a 9-0 thrashing of San Marino.

Roberto Martinez’ side have an unassailable 11-point lead over third-place Cyprus in Group I.

Belgium led 6-0 at the break after Lukaku’s brace, two own goals and Nacer Chadli and Youri Tielemans’ strikes.

Christian Benteke made it 7-0 before Yari Verschaeren scored a penalty and Timothy Castagne wrapped up the win.

Lukaku’s double takes his international tally to 51 and makes him the first player to score 50 goals for Belgium.

The Inter Milan striker has six goals in 10 games for club and country this season.

Meanwhile, Russia look set to join Belgium in progressing from Group I as they strengthened their position in second place with a 4-0 win against Scotland.

  • Euro 2020 Qualifiers: De Bruyne inspires Belgium to 4-0 rout of Scotland

Euro 2020 Qualifiers: De Bruyne inspires Belgium to 4-0 rout of Scotland

Belgium kept their 100 percent record intact in Euro 2020 qualifying Group I with a 4-0 stroll past a disappointing Scotland side at a subdued Hampden Park on Monday.

Roberto Martinez’s side, top of the FIFA rankings, were a class above their hosts as they scored three times before halftime through Romelu Lukaku, Thomas Vermaelen and Toby Alderweireld — all created by Kevin de Bruyne.

De Bruyne then capped a superb individual display with a clinical finish late on.

Victory left Belgium with 18 points from six games, three more than second-placed Russia who needed an 89th-minute goal by Mario Fernandes to beat Kazakhstan 1-0.

The top two go through to next year’s finals.

Scotland’s joint heaviest home defeat means their slender hopes of qualifying from the group are virtually over, although they could still reach the tournament via the Nations League playoffs, with a semi-final place already secured.

Belgium needed only nine minutes to take the lead with their first serious foray into Scottish territory.

Moments after Scotland had a free kick at the other end, Belgium counter-attacked in deadly fashion with Dries Mertens driving forward before finding De Bruyne who rolled a pass across the pitch for Lukaku to score with ease.

It completely knocked the stuffing out of the Scots and it was 2-0 in the 24th minute when De Bruyne whipped in a cross and Vermaelen arrived to side-foot past keeper David Marshall.

The game was effectively over already and Scotland’s night got even worse in the 32nd minute when De Bruyne swung over a corner and an unmarked Alderweireld headed in off the crossbar.

It was a passion-less display by Scotland and Belgium could afford the luxury of playing the rest of the match in cruise control as they claimed another easy three points.

De Bruyne saved the best goal to last as he planted a first-time shot past Marshall after being played in by Lukaku.

Scotland dropped to second from bottom in the table after Cyprus beat San Marino 4-0 to move above the Scots by a point.
