FG assures farmers of security support

The Federal Government has assured farmers of adequate security to return to their farmlands ahead of this year’s rainy season to boost agricultural activities nationwide.

Minister of State for Defence, Alh. Bello Matawalle, made this known during an interview with journalists in Maradun, Zamafara, on Sunday.

He said forest guards had been deployed to secure farmlands, and modern surveillance technology was being used to monitor and combat criminal activities.

“We are taking all necessary steps to ensure farmers return safely to their farms with full protection from any security threats across the country,” Matawalle stated.

He added that the government plans to develop indigenous defence and warfare systems to address security challenges and potentially supply them to other countries.

Matawalle urged governors to provide logistics support, including accommodation, operational vehicles, and intelligence gathering, to assist in securing rural communities.

He criticised some governors for engaging in blame games rather than supporting Federal Government efforts in addressing insecurity.

He stressed that security is everyone’s responsibility and called for public support for President Bola Tinubu’s combined military and non-military strategies to end criminality nationwide.

Zamfara: Matawalle woos Lawal to APC

The Minister of State for Defence and the immediate past Governor of Zamfara, Dr Bello Matawalle, has formerly invited Gov. Dauda Lawal to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is contained in a statement issued in Gusau on Sunday by Alhaji Ibrahim Dosara, former Commissioner for Information in the state.

He said that the minister made the call on Saturday at his residence in his hometown Maradun, while receiving thousands of supporters who paid him a Sallah homage.

He urged Lawal, who was voted on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Progressives for progress of the state.

According to the minister, instead of Lawal trying to sneak into the party, he should come out in the open to follow the proper channel and join the party.

“Dauda Lawal should come and join the APC rather than the hide-and-seek type of game the Governor is currently playing,” Matawalle was quoted as adding.

The minister assured Lawal that he does not hold any grudge against him, adding that Lawal was highly welcome into the comfortable fold of the APC.

Matawalle also urged Lawal to embrace the APC to join what he described as the trailblazer of security, progress, developments, peace and tranquility.

The minister emphasised that President Bola Tinubu, as a progressive leader, was a good manager of peace and tranquility.

“President Tinubu’s focus is on the development of the country and welcomes all wishing to join the trailblazer of peace, harmony growth and development.”

Matawalle assured his teeming supporters of his commitment to their welfare and urged them to continue to support Tinubu for the realisation of his Renewed Hope Agenda.

The minister urged the APC supporters in the state to support the president particularly in the areas of security, agriculture, health, social wellbeing and economic development.

He said the president had Zamfara at heart and he was always looking forward to salvaging its current situation of insecurity and economic hardship.

Matawalle appealed to the people of the state to give their maximum support to the laudable desire of the president.

The minister recalled how the Tinubu’s administration recently eliminated several terrorists’ kingpins and their foot soldiers, who were hitherto terrorising the state, the region and the county in general.

He said the president had recently ordered the security operatives to bring to an end, the spate of insecurity in northern Nigeria before the end of the year.

Matawalle said the the Ministry of Defence and the security high commands were tirelessly working out modalities to ensure compliance with the presidential directives.

He, however, lamented that Zamfara Government was not doing very well in terms of fighting banditry and welfare of the people of the state.

Matawalle said the Zamfara situation was so in spite of the huge monthly federal allocations being deployed to the state.

The minister, therefore, enjoined Lawal to justify the humongous federal allocations by providing developmental projects and basic infrastructure across the state.

The Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, has cautioned members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to avoid acts of insubordination against the party in the state.

Matawalle made the call on Sunday  while receiving the executives of the party from Anka, Bakura, Maradun and Talata Mafara Local Government Areas who paid him Sallah homage in his residence in his hometown, Maradun.

Matawalle, the immediate past Governor of the state, said APC members in the state should be thankful to God for having leaders with the people in their minds.

He commented another former Governor, Sen Abdul’aziz Yari, for his kind gestures to the development of the APC and the entire people of the state.

“As I always say, myself, Abdul’aziz Yari and other APC leaders in the state, we have been trying our best to improve the welfare of our members and good people of the state.

“I am using this medium to call on you to continue to support the party, we should avoid any acts of insubordination to the leadership of our great party.

“We should ignore any call to destroy the unity of our great party in the state,” he admonished.

Matawalle also called in the APC members to continue to be patient and assured them of more welfare packages, adding, “more  job opportunities are coming for the benefits of the state.”

The minister also called on the people of the state to continue to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration to promote the country.

“I want inform people of the state that President Tinubu has good intentions to develop Zamfara and the entire North-West.

“We are very grateful to Mr President for the ongoing Zaria-Gusau-Sokoto dual carriageway way.

“I am aware that, the Federal Government plans to execute more development projects in the state,” Matawalle added.

He mentioned Mayanchi to Guru and  Gusau-Isah-Sabon Birni highways, among others, as some of the major projects to be executed by the Tinubu’s administration.

  • Presidency reveals why Matawalle wasn’t sacked

Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to President Bola Tinubu, says allegations linking Bello Matawalle to the spate of banditry in the north-west have been found to be untrue.

Matawalle is the minister of state for defence. He was left on as Tinubu rejigged his cabinet on October 23.

Speaking in an interview on Arise TV , Onanuga said Matawalle, a former governor of Zamfara, was not sacked because the office of the national security adviser (NSA) investigated allegations bordering on his ties to bandits and found them spurious.

Matawalle has repeatedly been accused of working in cahoots with bandits in Nigeria’s north-west.

Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara, had also narrated how the government house was allegedly used to pay ransom for children of a permanent secretary during the Matawalle administration.

Lawal said if he were Matawalle, he would resign from the federal cabinet and work towards clearing his name.

In his response, Matawalle said he has no links with bandits terrorising the state

Onanuga said the allegations against Matawalle were “mere fabrication” and politically motivated.

“As far as I know, most of those things are just mere allegations,” the president’s aide said.

“In one of them, I got something like that and sent it to the NSA and asked: ‘Have you heard about this?’

“The NSA said: ‘No. We have probed a lot of those things; they are not true’. People are just bringing out all kinds of fake things and allegations. That is why the man (Matawalle) is still in the cabinet.

“The president, I’m sure, has heard many stories about him. For him to be there shows that… like I have said, some of those things have been probed; they have been found not to be true.

“The NSA office has already investigated some of those allegations. There are mere fabrication.”

How Bandits appoint, depose village heads – Sokoto LG chair

The Chairman of Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, Alhaji Sharifu Kamarawa, has told Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, that some communities in the council are still under the control of bandits.

Receiving the minister at the local government secretariat on Thursday, he said the bandits led by Kachalla Bello Turji, appointed and deposed village heads in those areas.

“Here in Isa town, we are living peacefully. The problem is in the eastern part of Isa. There are places that are still under the control of bandits. They appoint and depose village heads there.

“We are appealing for a military camp in Kagara to take care of those areas. We used to have a camp there before it was relocated. Then there was a relative peace in those places. So we want the camp back,” he appealed.

The chairman however admitted that since the death of Halilu Sububu, the bandits’ kingpin killed about a month ago, there had been a significant reduction in attacks on their communities.

According to him, they can now ply some roads which were formerly deserted.
In his remarks, the minister said President Bola Tinubu was seriously concerned about insecurity in the North, a reason he appointed northerners Ministers of Defence and heads of security operatives.

“The President also directed me to ensure militarisation of all the danger areas in the state. So we are going to creat a military base at Gundumi which will be patrolling Gundumi-Marnona road which remained closed for years,” he added.
Matawalle further assured residents of Isa of deployment of more security operatives to the area.

“So we need your support because the issue of security is everyone’s business. We need to know about the bandits movement.”

Swear with Quran you know nothing about banditry – Matawalle challenges Gov Lawal

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, on Tuesday, challenged the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, to swear with the Holy Quran to prove his innocence in banditry affecting the state.

Matawalle gave the charge on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily while debunking the governor’s claim which linked him to banditry in the state.

The minister recalled how he swore using the Quran that he had no connection with banditry.

During an appearance on TVC, Lawal had charged the minister to resign and address the allegations of him sponsoring banditry and money laundering during his tenure as governor.

“If I were him (Matawalle), I would resign and face all the allegations against me.

“For me honestly, I will step aside and face this allegation until I clear my name before I come back and continue my job. That should have been honourable. How will he have all these allegations against him and he is still the minister of defence?,” the governor said.

Reacting, Matawalle said, “They should bring any proof of that.”

While stating that the allegations were unfounded, the Minister of State for Defence explained that they were based on his dialogue with the bandits which other governors had done.

He said: “It was not only I that dialogued with bandits. Remember all the governors dialogue, the then governors of Niger and Sokoto states did the same. Why only me? Because it is Zamfara.

“Zamfara is a very complex state with terrible human beings with devilish ideas. Let me remind you I was the only governor that swore to the Holy Quran that I have no hand or connection with banditry or I am not happy with what is happening that if I am happy or if I am part of it or if I know those doing it or if I am collaborating with them God should not give me one-second grace.

“I challenged all the politicians, including General Ali Gusau and Dauda Lawal, to do the same. None of them could take the oath, and if they don’t take the oath that means they are part of it.”

REVEALED! Many governors like me negotiated with bandits, why crucify me – Matawalle

Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has denied allegations of aiding banditry, calling on accusers to provide evidence in his involvement.

He challenged the Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal to swear an oath with the Quran that he has no connection in banditry affecting the state.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, he defended his decision to engage in dialogue with bandits, a practice he says was supported by several governors and has led to the recovery of abducted persons and ammunition in Zamfara.

They should bring any proof of that,” the minister said.

”Because I dialogue, it was not only I, remember all the governors dialogue, the governor of Niger state dialogue with bandits, the governor of Sokoto did the same. while only me because it is Zamfara.”

”Zamfara is a very complex state with terrible human beings with devilish ideas”

Matawalle also indicated that his accusers are all involved in the activities they have alleged him of.

”Let me remind you I was the only governor that swore to the Holy Quran that I have no hand or connection with banditry or I am not happy with what is happening that if I am happy or if I am part of it or if I know those doing it or if I am collaborating with them God should not give  me one-second grace”

“I challenged all the politicians, including General Ali Gusau and Dauda Lawal, to do the same. None of them could take the oath, and if they don’t take the oath that means they are part of it,

“I have always acted in good faith, as have other governors who engaged in dialogue with bandits, including the Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello, and the Governor of Sokoto State. Yet, I seem to be singled out, perhaps because Zamfara is a complex state with terrible human beings with devilish ideas,” he stated.

According to estimates from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED)–at least five times more people were kidnapped in Nigeria last year than in both Mexico and Colombia combined — countries notorious for abductions

The minister argued that his fearlessness in tackling criminal elements in Zamfara has made him unpopular among those engaged in criminal activities.

“The people who oppose me do so because I go after them,” he remarked

When asked if these individuals were politicians. He said in the affirmation, “Yes, they are politicians, and I go after them.””

“The dialogue brought significant success,” Matawalle asserted, citing the recovery of weapons and the release of thousands of abducted individuals, including some foreign nationals.

Banditry and kidnapping are just some of the challenges facing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who came to power in May promising to tackle insecurity from criminal gangs, jihadists and other armed groups.

Drawing comparisons to the path of negotiations with bandits taken by then President Buhari, in his efforts to secure the release of the Chibok girls, Matawalle said, “This is a global practice; governments across the world enter into agreements to save lives,” he added.

Matawalle also condemned what he described as attempts to blackmail him for his efforts. “People are spreading misconceptions out of hate, but I have no regrets because we achieved a lot of success without paying a single kobo in ransom.”

The governor, who spoke during an appearance on TVC, said if Matawalle had any integrity left in him, he should honourably resign.

Lawal detailed how the government house was allegedly used to pay ransom for abducted children of a permanent secretary in the state.

He said: “If I were him (Matawalle), I would resign and face all the allegations against me.

“There was a permanent secretary, when his children were abducted… it was unfortunate that he had to pay ransom through the government house and it was also very clear from all the allegations that bandits were being kept at the government house.

“For me honestly, I will step aside and face this allegation until I clear my name before I come back and continue my job. That should have been honourable. How will he have all these allegations against him and he is still the minister of defence?”

Zamfara: I inherited empty treasury from Matawalle – Lawal

Zamfara state governor, Dauda Lawal has said he inherited an empty treasury from his predecessor.

Lawal stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today programme on Monday.

According to the governor, when he assumed office, he realized that over N250 billion was not accounted for under former Governor Bello Matawalle.

“EFCC made a pronouncement sometime around May 21, 2023 or there about that it was alleging that N70 billion was stolen. That means before I took over. By the time I took over, I realized that that N70 billion they mentioned was a child’s play.”

“So far based on available records, we realized over N250 billion was not accounted for. It is very funny. Let me explain to you the state I inherited. I inherited a very dysfunctional state. When I took over there was no N4 million in Zamfara State Government account – just empty.

“There was a backlog of salaries for four months. For three years. none of Zamfara indigene wrote either WAEC or NECO. I had to settle N1.3 billion for NECO and N1.6 billion for WAEC. Some of the students got their certificates after we settled WAEC and NECO.”

However, the governor said that he has never given a dime to bandits, saying he would never negotiate with them.

Zamfara is one of the states badly affected by banditry in the North West region.

Matawalle, now Minister of State for Defence, has severally denied handing over empty treasury to his successor.
