“Following recent happenings in the political alignment of the state governor, I am persuaded to review my involvement in the current state administration.

“Consequently, being a founding and subsisting member of the PDP in Cross River, I cannot in good conscience remain in my appointment as Special Adviser on Sustainable Development Goals.

“I hereby resign my appointment as Special Adviser immediately. I am very grateful to Gov. Ayade for finding me worthy to serve the state in the said capacity.

“Nevertheless, I will continue to support the state and government in any way possible as a stakeholder and senior citizen,” the letter read.

Defection: If PDP is willing I may return – Gov Ayade

The Governor of Cross River State, Prof Ben Ayade has said if the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is willing, he might return to the party he left on Thursday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Ayade was speaking on national television when he made this assertion, stressing that if the PDP should win the presidency in 2023, and the party is willing, he will support them.

On his possibility of going back to the PDP if it takes over in 2023, Ayade simply said: “If they’re willing, I will support them if they emerge; if they don’t want, I will remain. If I find it’s policy in line with my philosophy, but I doubt it because of the people they are parading.

Meanwhile, the Cross River State Governor said who is who in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) pleaded with him not to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reacting to a question that 24 hours before his defection, the publicity secretary of PDP had insisted that he was not defecting, Ayade said he was still a loyal member of the PDP 24 hours before his defection.

“Kola was very right, I was actually still a loyal member before my sudden summersault to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” he said.

He further explained that the thrust on why he defected was based on the fact that his voice can’t be heard in the opposition.

On whether members of the National Assembly will defect with him, Ayade said:

“Members of the National Assembly were there and I hold the political structure of Cross River State having 38,000 political appointees across the 18 LGAs of the state.

“If Ayade defects, others must follow me because the political structure of the state is with me so they must defect with me”.

Only elected member of APC in Cross River bares mind on defection of Gov Ayade

The only elected member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State, Hon. Alex Egbona, the member representing Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives has bared his mind on the defection of the State Governor, Prof Ben Ayade to the ruling party.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Ayade, elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), along with members of the PDP in the State, elected, appointed or otherwise, became defected members of the APC on Thursday.

Ayade declared Cross River as an APC State at the State Executive Council Chamber, Governor’s Office in Calabar after a two-hour meeting with seven APC Governors led by the APC interim chairman and Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni.

Speaking on the development, Egbona, who now happens to be the only elected member of the APC in the State, in a statement, expressed excitement on the defection of Ayade, saying the Governor’s defection has opened up a new chapter for the people of Cross River.

The statement reads: “History has been made today in Cross River State, as our governor, Prof Ben Ayade leads scores of PDP members and critical stakeholders from the state to the ruling APC. It feels good to see that our dear state is now listed in the comity of progressive states.

“Before now, I was like a lone child, being the only elected member of the party from Cross River. But today, the music has changed. Other elected personalities have now joined the fold. The broom revolution has hit Cross River State and our people will be the greatest beneficiaries.

“The coming into the APC of our governor and some members of the state house of assembly, National Assembly, political appointees, local government chairmen and all progressive minded Cross Riverians has opened up a new chapter for us as a people. It speaks of better days for Cross River State in the days ahead.

“This is what we have been waiting for. Getting our state back into the federal architectural ecosystem is the best thing to happen to us at this time.

“In my capacity as the elected representative of the APC from Cross River, I am glad to welcome Nigeria’s first digital governor, a humble servant of the people, a senator of the Federal Republic, a friend and compatriot, Prof Ben Ayade, to the APC family. I also welcome all the other defectors to the family. I am ready to work with the new family members to take our state to the next level”.

TNG reports Governor Ayade on Thursday dumped the PDP for the APC, highlighting the character attributes of President Muhammadu Buhari and the realisation that Cross River, which has been emasculated economically, following the ceding of its oil wells, need to be in sync with the party at the center, as the main reasons for joining the APC.

According to the governor, “having seen and known the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and his commitment to this country, his nationalistic disposition and all the efforts he has made to bring Nigeria to where we are today, it is obvious that at this point we needed to join hands with him to build a Nigeria that we can be proud of .

“We need all governors to recognize that it is not party that matters. It is character, it is honor, it is commitment to the vision of this great nation. We all need to as a team work ahead of the president by working towards building a prosperous country that the succession worries of 2023 will come without the fears and the worries the international community has for us.

“I believe that if everyone of us as governor joins hands with Mr President, I think we can sit on the same dining table and fashion out a way to govern this country.”

Speaking on the development, an elated Buni said he and his team were in the state to formally welcome Governor Ayade to the APC.

His words: “I am here on behalf of the APC family to welcome His Excellency the Executive Governor of Cross River State formally to the APC. As from today he is the leader of the party in the state.”

Why I left PDP for APC – Governor Ayade

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade has, shortly after his defection, opened up on why he left the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

While there are indications that Governor Ayade left the PDP over fracas with Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, the Cross River State Governor has stated he left the PDP having seen and known President Muhammadu Buhari and all the efforts he has made to bring Nigeria to where it is today.

Ayade stated that he believes that if every Governor in the country should join hands with Buhari, they can sit on the same dining table with the President to fashion out a way to govern the country properly.

“Having seen and known the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and his commitment to this country, his nationalistic disposition and all the efforts he has made to bring Nigeria to where we are today, it is obvious that at this point we need to join hands with him to build a Nigeria that we can be proud of.

“I believe that if everyone of us as Governor joins hands with Mr President, I think we can sit on the same dining table and fashion out a way to govern this country.

“Today, I am officially announcing my defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” Governor Ayade stated.

Gov. Ayade assures on Obudu airport

Gov. Ben Ayade of Cross River has given assurance that the construction work on the Obudu International Passenger and Cargo Airport would be ready within the stipulated time.

Ayade, who gave the assurance while inspecting the project on Sunday at Obudu, however, did not state the exact time the airport would be ready for inauguration and operation.

The governor expressed satisfaction with the speed of work at the project site in Obudu, saying that the number of contractors engaged in the project would ensure completion in stipulated time.

“I am quite excited at the progress of work so far, we have five subcontractors working here at the Obudu International passenger/cargo airport and we hope to be done with all the earthworks in the next four months.

“The contract was only awarded earlier this year and they moved to site about two months ago and they have achieved about 35 per cent in terms of job completion.

“We are passionate about this project, we are very aggressive about this project, you can see the number of equipment and different subcontractors on site,” he said.

He said that the airport project and the state-owned airline, Cally Air, had been positioned to change the economic narrative of the state by increasing its tourism potentials.

“The Cally Air is completely set up to drive traffic into the state. If you take Emirates out of Dubai, you will have no Dubai, therefore we must understand the fact that logistics is key in today’s world.

“No matter how much you want to depend on a digital world, some physical movement remains imperative,” he added.

Ayade noted that the airport is a vital life wire for the Obudu Cattle Ranch.

He explained that the facility has the capacity to meet Nigeria’s tourism needs, hence the need to create higher footfalls and densification for the ranch.

“To achieve this, access is critical. You cannot have access to Obudu Cattle Ranch even if you were to come in from Lagos, for example.

“You will have to land in Calabar and then you have to deal with six hours of travel time by road to get to the Ranch, which is quite discouraging.

“Tourism cannot be tolerated; tourism is a pleasure. When it becomes tolerance it becomes torture.

“So, we needed to deal with the access because even if I have to put gold in the Ranch nobody will come unless the access to the Ranch is very convenient.

“Beyond increasing footfalls to the Ranch, the main objective of the airport is to create an industrialization process that will give every industry in the state an export potential.

“You have to invest in Naira and earn in dollar for this country to grow,” Ayade said.

  • Ayade: PIB must address delisting of Cross River as oil producing state

Ayade: PIB must address delisting of Cross River as oil producing state

As the Joint Committee on Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) tours the country for stakeholders’ inputs, Cross River State governor, Sir Ben Ayade, has tasked the National Assembly to handle related issues to the bill with circumspection to avoid contentions that are likely to trail its ultimate passage into law.

Addressing the committee members led by its Chairman, Senator Sabo Muhammed Nakuda, during a courtesy call at the Governor’s Lodge, Calabar, Ayade said owing to its delicate and controversial nature, “the details of the PIB remains a subject for further analytical dissection.”

Governor Ayade added that “inspite of the haste with which we want to drive the PIB, we must exercise ecclesiastical caution to ensure that the PIB bill does not throw up other developments that will bring about other contentions and continuous struggle.”

Specifically, Ayade flayed the focus of the bill which he noted, centered more on oil bearing communities, with scant regard to communities that suffer direct impact of exploration activities.

“While we make haste, we must show caution as the people of Cross River State have a very strong feeling that the PIB bill must address their unique concern,” the governor charged, decrying that “the PIB bill focuses so much on producing communities without emphasizing on the adversely impacted communities.

“We are the most impacted, because all the oils within the “Akpami” fields find their way into Cross River State.

“Right here where you sit, directly behind my house here, is the Calabar River, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean directly into the Akpami wells. One of those wells is just 36 kilometers from here. When there is a spill, where does it go to? It comes here.”

Ayade who lamented the plight of some of his coastal subjects whose main occupation is fishing, said “our people depend on fishing, our state has been completely dislocated from the oil producing states.”

On the state’s non oil producing status, Ayade queried : “I do not understand how on earth Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom States, as well as Cameroon will have oil and only Cross River will be non-oil producing state.
As a professor of science, and one who had worked in the oil industry before coming into politics, there is no science, no spiritualism, no magic that can explain this except politics.”

According to the governor, “the PIB must address that. You cannot even in law and even biblically, take from a brother who has so much to give to a brother who has little. But to take from a brother who has nothing to give to a brother who has more, is a political issue that the National Assembly and indeed the PIB must cure.

“A good example is how Cross River State gets less than two billion naira allocation in a month while a sister state will be dealing with twelve, thirteen billion. Such an unequal distribution of wealth exacts pains and anguish. It is unnatural and that is the essence the National Assembly.

“For an egalitarian distribution of resources, this nation can only become one when there is fairness, equity and justice. That’s all we seek and that’s all we crave as a state.”

Reeling out more of the litany of woes wrought on the state, occasioned by a series of injustices by the federal government, Ayade wept: “As a state we feel pained. I have been in the same downstream Committee. I asked what is the petroleum consumption of Cross River State? It is near nothing because they have kept us in abject poverty. We have been reduced to want in body, spirit and in soul.”

Seeking remedy from the Joint Committee of the National Assembly on PIB, Governor Ayade entreated: “This is a great opportunity for us as a people to say if you are making a new law, please whatever is the revenue, whatever are the taxes ensure that the price regulation you give to the oil industry should also be commiserate to what the state consumes. If I don’t consume as much diesel and you are giving a waiver or discount, let that discount, it’s applicability to Cross River be relative to the consumption.

“It’s unfair for Cross River to suffer losses in oil wells, a loss which was meant to be temporary, because the political solution that engineered that was intended to last for ten years and subject to review. That review had not been done.”

Ayade disclosed that in spite of the delisting of Cross River from the oil bearing states, the state still boasts of huge hydrocarbon deposits, “so as PIB comes before me and I know that in Biase and Odukpani Local Government Areas of Cross River State, we have huge inland deposits of crude.

“I have done this analysis and have sent the report since 2016 to the President and asked for a discretionary right for the exploration and exploitation of our hydrocarbon deposits. I have not received a correspondent to date.”

Other finds, according to the governor, “is a huge deposit of gas in Ogoja axis sharing boundary with Ebonyi. This, I have also reported with a geo locations and issued as a report.

“How does PIB address this? So why not review the marginal fields allocation process to fast track the process of extracting the hydro carbon reserves, to take advantage of it and diversify the economy before it becomes old fashion.

“So I agree with the need for us to show some speed in passing the PIB, but I feel that the people of Cross River State have treated unfairly. Where is the moral conscience of this country, a state with a population of 4.2 million people gets a little over a billion naira while another state with about the same demography gets 14 to 16 billion naira monthly?”

Gov. Ayade presents 2021 budget of N277.7bn

Gov. Ben Ayade of Cross River on Thursday in Calabar presented the 2021 budget of N277.7billion to the State House of Assembly.

Ayade, who tagged the budget as “Budget of Blush and Bliss’’, said it was aimed at improving the welfare of residents of the state.

While giving a breakdown the budget, the governor explained that “Of the figure N277.7billion, a sum of N192billion represents the recurrent expenditure which represents 69 per cent of the budget.

“31 per cent of the budget is now being reduced and left for basic expenditure which is the sum of N85.1billion.

“The 31 per cent is to deal with infrastructure, water resources, foreign relationship, information system, climate change and also strengthen our social media unit’’.

According to him, the budget will also focus on efforts to diminish hunger and poverty, increase youths’ employment and enhance security and rural development.

He noted that the outgoing year was characterised by the Covid-19 pandemic and the EndSARS, with negative impacts on the economy.

The governor disclosed that few days ago, the state got the final registration for CallyAir, a state-owned commercial airline to commence operations soon.

Earlier, Speaker of the House, Mr Eteng Jonah-Williams, said that the current year would go down in history as “the year of ups and down”, calling for strategic actions and deep thinking.

He, however, noted that in spite of the year’s challenges, the house worked overtime to see that the 2020 budget was passed, paving way for economic growth and socio political transformation in the state.

He commended the state governor for giving approval for the employment of 20,000 workers into the state civil service and the indefinite suspension of tuition fees by indigenes of the state in Cross River State University of Technology.
