Chelsea fullback reveals key to Mount success

Chelsea fullback Ben Chilwell has been surprised by Mason Mount’s work ethic since they became teammates at Stamford Bridge.

There were doubts the 22-year-old would continue his ascension after Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.

However, Mount has been excellent since the German arrived and Chillwell thinks the ‘sky is the limit’ for his Chelsea and England teammate.

“Before I came here me and Mase were close through the England set-up, but that was only in training and playing with him a few times a season,” said Chilwell in a press conference prior to Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg with Porto, in which they hold a 2-0 lead.

“Now training with him every day, I see how good he really is. It’s not just his natural ability, but the fact he works very hard, he is very keen to learn all the time, and he is always doing extra work in the gym. He does everything he can to better himself.

“With the natural talent he has, his work-rate, the sky is the limit for him. Since I’ve come in until now, he has improved so much.

“If he keeps on doing what he is doing, scoring, assisting, staying humble, working hard, then he will be a great player for Chelsea and England for a long time.”

Ashley Cole reveals private chat with Chelsea left-back

Chelsea academy coach Ashley Cole has opened up on his private conversation with Ben Chilwell when he first arrived.

Chilwell, 23, has made a fine start to his Blues career since sealing a £50million move from Leicester in the summer.

“Defensively he’s been solid,” Cole said on Sky Sports ahead of the Blues’ win against Sheffield United. “He’s come into a side that was leaking goals with a lot of individual mistakes.

“Apart from Thiago Silva against West Brom the individual mistakes have been cut down.

“Chilwell, he can play in different areas of the pitch, he’s comfortable on the ball.

“I had a conversation with him and the first thing was ‘what do I need to make it at Chelsea’. He was so enthusiastic, he wanted to learn and he wanted to make it.

“We saw him at Leicester, that’s why Chelsea brought him and we’re seeing it now at Chelsea.”

Chelsea’s summer of free spending continues with the arrival of Ben Chilwell from Leicester city on a five-year deal worth £50m.

Chilwell is Chelsea’s third addition of the summer after the arrivals of winger Hakim Ziyech, 27, from Ajax and striker Timo Werner, 24, from RB Leipzig.

The defender, 23, is a Leicester academy product who made his debut for the club in 2015, and had a contract with the Foxes until 2024.

Chelsea are edging closer to landing Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell.

The London Evening Standard says Chelsea are close to striking a £50million deal with Leicester City for the signing of England international Chilwell.

Manager Frank Lampard has long considered the 23-year-old his first-choice target at left-back, a position identified as a problem since the early days of his reign.

The Blues have been tracking Chilwell since before January, but held reservations over the fee, with Leicester having initially hoped to bank around £80m – similar to that Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire last year.

However, given Chilwell’s desire to join Lampard’s project at Chelsea and the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic on clubs, the Foxes dropped their asking price.
