  • Yuletide: FRSC deploys 100 personnel on Benin-Ore Expressway

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ore Unit Command, Ondo State, says it has deplored 100 personnel, four patrol vehicles, two towing vehicles and an ambulance on the Benin-Ore expressway.

    The Unit Commander, Mr Philip Ozonnandi, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ore.

    Ozonnadi said that the measure was to ensure free flow of traffic and safety of lives and property on the route during the yuletide.

    The FRSC boss urged motorists plying the road to always slow down and park well whenever they were waved down by FRSC personnel for routine checks.

    He warned them against drugs and alcohol intake which might result in fatigue and cause them to sleep while on the wheel.

    Ozonnandi implored drivers of heavy duty vehicles to always pull off the road whenever they were tired to take a rest before continuing their journeys.

    He said the special FRSC road patrol would start on Wednesday nationwide.

    The unit commander, however, urged the public to call the FRSC toll free emergency line 122 in case of any emergency on the Benin-Ore expressway.

    90% of students in Benin Republic varsity are Nigerians – official

    President of the Houdegbe North American University, Republic of Benin, Dada Houdegbe, on Saturday announced that about 90 percent of its students were Nigerians.

    Houdegbe made the remark at the University’s award of degrees and conferment of honorary awards to its graduating students and other local and international personalities, NAN reports.

    “Three years ago, we graduated about 3,000 students from different areas of studies.

    “Today, the Houdegbe North American University is graduating about 2,000 students, as well as the conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees on deserving personalities.

    “Let me say that about 90 percent of students in our university are Nigerians, who are happy being our students,” he said.

    According to him, there is currently a growing interest of many young Nigerians in the courses being offered by the university, its affordability and good learning environment.

    The president said that the university was meant to build bridges across political, economic, linguistic and cultural divides in West Africa, in particular, and Africa, in general.

    Houdegbe commended former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his belief in the institution’s ideals, as well as the encouragement he had continued to give to the university.

  • Obaseki inaugurates Family Court in Benin

    Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo on Monday in Benin inaugurated the Family Court, to exclusively handle matters pertaining to children in both civil and criminal matters.

    He said if Nigeria could implement the family court, it would go a long way to address some of the challenges facing families.

    The governor, represented by his deputy, Mr Philip Shaibu, assured that the government would support the judiciary, especially as the 2017 appropriation bill provides for infrastructural development.

    He said that government would provide more courts as well as improve on the welfare of judges and judicial workers .

    The inauguration of the court marks the beginning of the implementation of the Edo State Child Rights Bill.

    The bill was passed into law in 2007 and was assented to by former governor, Oserhiemen Osunbor.

    The Chief Judge, Justice Cromwell Idahosa, who spoke, said that the Child Rights Bill extensively caters for the interest and rights of the child.

    Idahosa added that the court shall have exclusive jurisdiction to handle all matters pertaining to children in both civil and criminal matters.

    “With the inauguration of this court, there shall now be speedy trials in matters relating to children’s welfare and protection, specifically from undue exposure and exploitation.

    “The court will strive to provide families with the best possible outcome in child rights’ cases in accordance with the law and best global practices, he said.

    Edo Chairman, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mr Ede Asenoguan, said the inauguration would place the state amongst the few states in the country that have established the family court.

    “We are happy that today, our collective dream of caring for the rights of our children has been given a boost by this inauguration.

    “Certainly, our children deserve the best and I believe that no effort shall be spared in ensuring that the rights of children are protected and enforced whenever or wherever same is breached or violated, “he said.

  • Assistant Commissioner of Police commits suicide in Benin

     

    An Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP, identified as Christopher Osakue, has reportedly committed suicide in Benin, the Edo State capital.

    According to a report by The Punch, the late police officer, who was in charge of training and development at the state police command after his recent posting from Ondo State, allegedly shot himself in the head with his service pistol in his residence located on Upper Sokponba on Wednesday.

    Osakue had earlier suffered a partial stroke few years ago and was gradually recovering from it before he took his own life.

    According to the report, the deceased had sent a woman and a little boy, said to be living with him, on an errand before he shot himself to death.

    A neighbour was said to have heard a gunshot inside the ACP’s residence about 5pm on the said day and shortly after the sound of the gun, a frightening silence engulfed the entire building.

    Confirming the incident on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, CP, Haliru Gwandu, explained that the pistol which he allegedly used to commit the act was signed for at the Ondo State Police command before he was posted to Edo.

    The CP described the senior police’ death as a case of suicide.
