ASUU Strike: Disregard calls for resumption, UNIBEN Mgt tells students

The Management of University of Benin has debunked information circulating that the institution was set to resume academic activities on Oct. 20.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls social networking platforms were saturated with the rumour two weeks after the university released details for its post UTME and Direct Entry screenings.

But the authorities in a statement issued by Dr Benedicta Ehanire, Public Relations Officer on Monday in Benin, advised students, parents and the public to disregard such information.

The institution, she said, had not announced any date for resumption.

  • Travelogue: From Ekpoma to Benin with pain – By Okoh Aihe

Travelogue: From Ekpoma to Benin with pain – By Okoh Aihe

I write this material with profound sense of pain, a hapless witness to a history of degeneration, and painful descent into a life of near worthlessness and hopelessness, a sustained devaluation of the 70s and 80s quality of living which has become a referenced nostalgia.

I write in honour of the voiceless and the traumatised people of Edo State of Esan, Etsako and Uhumonde extraction, especially those living in the propinquity of Ekpoma and Ehor axis, whose means of livelihood have been denuded and totally ruined by an express road that has become a curse, people who die or see death daily, people for whom frustration has become even an acceptable standard of living because government has left them behind or totally abandoned them to atrophy slowly.

I write in recollection of the beauty of life, growing up in Ishan and attending one of the best Secondary Schools in the old Bendel State, Annunciation Catholic College, Irrua, and being privileged to go into the University of Benin for undergraduate studies. Life was good. There was water, electricity and the roads were well maintained. One could travel to any part of Ishan at any particular time, day and night, and evil was hardly a consideration.

Reflections and recollections can make a smile break on the face. Such recall can be so overwhelming and really therapeutic, living in the present a life once lived but which has now receded to the realm of the dodos, a life fabled into existence but which once upon a time, was reality.

How can Esan land become a fabled reality to me, a native son, who grew his wisdom teeth in the village and can lay claim to knowing some of the mores and deep secrets of the people?

Pain! Lots of pain!! Life has hardly grown here ever since, instead a shameful diminishment, forlornness and a recourse to primitivity, of sheer wickedness and mindless humiliation of a whole race, has been steadily elevated.

I am seated in this Big Joe bus, which is more of a contraption than a vehicle that should actually be on the road. A friend is by my side but he doesn’t know the storm going on inside of me but which almost immediately is finding an expression through my nose as it is beginning to run immediately from dust and the threatening environment.

The journey from Ekpoma to Benin was a dash in those days, a quick trip that cost very little, but not any more. The road is broken extensively and completely dilapidated. This road built in the 70s was one of the very best; they called it an express road then even when that name was overfit. The road is in ruins and one can say it has nearly assumed the ignominy of wreck and devastation.

One part of the road is completely taken over by trucks or trailers, and the trailer line on this very day was close to Ehor, which is midway between Ishan and Benin City. That is the way we used to estimate the journey but is actually about 22 km. Just imagine the horror of fighting for space with angry trailer drivers for all of 22 km!

Some of these vehicles are trying to make their way to Okpella, to the cement factories owned by either Dangote or Bua. Yet some of the trucks should be heading to other parts of the country including Abuja. But they are stuck on this disaster called a road that looks more like an entrapment than a road. Some of the vehicles have also succumbed to the harshness and cruelty of the road, broken down with help very far away. Yet some others simply just tumble over and deposit that load and sometimes containers by the road side. It is chaos that is playing out between Ekpoma and Benin and  the situation could boil over very soon.

In my growing up years, I used to be very angry with trailer drivers because of the menace they cause on the roads, because of their speed, and sometimes some accidents that could be very fatal. But growing up has come with some more understanding, that the vehicles wasting on the road are peoples’ investments, their goods, including perishable items; they are wasting because the government they voted into power overtime fill their hopes with sawdust.

Some guy lamented that Governor Godwin Obaseki has let Ishan people down. I found myself defending him in spite of my self. Ishan is at the centre of an orchestrated neglect and rot. The major roads leading to Ishan – Benin to Ewu, Ewu through Auchi to Lokoja and Abuja, and the road from Uromi to Agbor, are all Federal Government roads. It is the failure of governance at the federal level that has brought a lot of shade on the state. Unfortunately, some unnecessary distractions of his administration have not helped his case at all.

I am aware that contract for the dualisation of the Benin – Ishan – Abuja road was awarded under the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration but the contract was hardly funded. Under this administration the road has enjoyed no attention at all despite its strategic importance to vehicular movements. The story ahead is not very good because a government that lives a life of borrowing has predicated its next year’s budget on what it can scrounge from people, and has no provisions for infrastructural development.

The story gets even worse. The wait for any intervening amelioration may be much longer. In the past efforts were focussed on dualisation  but with the road having failed completely, only a complete reconstruction will return life to that part of the state. Business and social activities on that route have to be restored. The people have to be reassured that they are part of the state and part of this country.

But I feel a lot of premonition because life has been politicised in our nation, even truth is politicised, to the extent that a failed government will want to paint pictures that don’t exist, pictures quite antithetical to the lived experience of the people.

This is not just a story of gloom and doom. Time has come for truth to win. I am old enough to know that this government does not have the money to embark on massive road construction across the states of the federation. But something needs to happen. The government must confess that truth and spruce up its image to attract organisations that are ready to participate in Public Private Partnership (ppp) projects. The government must do documentation with sincerity to protect participants from unnecessary litigation. This is one strand of development in most parts of the world. People must be able to collect their money once an investment has been made.

Unfortunately, this government has spent nearly eight years pursuing shadows and sowing untruths, and it is the lot of the people to suffer pain and frustration for not using their vote wisely.

Fidelity bank set to take over boards of Kano, Benin, Kaduna DISCOs

Fidelity Bank said it planned to take over the boards of Kano, Benin and Kaduna Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and to collateralise their shares.

The Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), Alex Okoh, and the Executive Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sanusi Garba said this in a joint statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

“Today, we were informed by Fidelity Bank that they have activated the call on the collateralised shares of Kano, Benin and Kaduna (Fidelity and AFREXIM) DISCOs.

“They have also initiated action to take over the Boards of these DISCOs and exercise the rights on the shares.

“Fidelity Bank’s action is a contractual and commercial intervention and is between the Core Investors in the DISCOs and the lender.

“BPE is involved because of the 40 per cent shareholding of the government in the DISCOs.’’

According to the statement, the new board members of the affected Kano DISCO are, Hasan Tukur, as Chairman, Nelson Ahaneku, and Engr. Rabiu Suleiman as members.

It said Benin DISCO would have K.C. Akuma, as the Chairman, Adeola Ijose and Charles Onwera as members.

The statement said Kaduna DISCO would have Abbas Jega as Chairman, Ameenu Abubakar and Marlene Ngoyi as members.

It said BPE had nominated Bashir Gwandu (Kano), Yomi Adeyemi (Benin), and Umar Abdullahi (Kaduna) as independent directors to represent the government’s 40 per cent interest in the three DISCOs respectively during the transition.

“We are engaging with the Central Bank of Nigeria (as the banking sector regulator) to ensure an orderly transition and to ensure that Fidelity Bank does not hold the DISCOs’ shares in perpetuity.

“It is envisaged that the majority interest in the entities would be sold to capable private sector investors willing and able to re-capitalise and manage the entities efficiently.

“We have also received assurances that Fidelity Bank will participate fully in all the ongoing market initiatives aimed at improving the sector (National Mass Metering Programme).’’

The statement said in the interim, NERC and BPE met on an emergency basis and activated the Business Continuity Process and appointed interim Managing Directors in the affected DISCOs.

They are Ahmad Dangana, Kano Disco, Henry Ajagbawa, Benin Disco, and Yusuf Yahaya, Kaduna Disco.

“Also, with the takeover of Ibadan DISCO by AMCON, the BPE has obtained approval from NERC to appoint Kingsley Achife as the interim managing director.

“In a temporary capacity, the leadership of AMCON will be a placeholder board for the Ibadan franchise.

“Ahmed Kuru will chair the board, Eberechukwu Uneze and Aminu Ismail as members, while Oluwaseyi Akinwale will represent the interest of the government on the board alongside the director-general of BPE.

“Lastly, we are re-structuring the Management and Board of Port Harcourt DISCO to forestall the imminent insolvency of the entity.

“As a condition for support to the entity to meet its market obligations, Iboroma Akpana will take over as the Chairman of the Board. Emmanuel Okotete, Eyo Ekpo, Ismaila Shuaibu and the director-general of BPE will form the interim Board. ‘’

It said Mr Benson Uwheru would take over as the Managing Director of PHEDC as part of the changes.

According to the statement, the government will support the activation of emergency funds through the Nigerian Electricity Market Stabilisation Facility.

This according to the statement is to support the entity, while it goes through restructuring and repositioning to serve the citizens of the franchise area better.

“We are working with the Minister of Power to ensure no service disruptions during these transitions.

“We remain committed to supporting the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry to serve Nigerians better,’’ it said.

  • Dubai new Human Trafficking destination – NAPTIP

Dubai new Human Trafficking destination – NAPTIP

Mr. Nduka Nwanwenne, Benin Zonal Commander, The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has disclosed that Dubai, United Arab Emirate (UAE), is now the destination of choice of victims of human trafficking.

He disclosed this on Wednesday, in Benin, at the commencement of a three-day sensitisation programme on human trafficking.

Nwanwenne explained that against the norm where victims of human trafficking were transported by their traffickers by land to their destinations, victims were now air transported.

“This is because the human traffickers have stepped up their game, and the destination of choice of victims of human trafficking was now Dubai.

“Human Trafficking is not abating in the country, because traffickers make so much money from their victims so they take it as a business.

“The traffickers are now also concentrating on rural areas for recruitment of their victims”, he said.

The zonal commander also revealed that irregular migration was also been used as a ploy for human trafficking, such that its victims were being exploited for their organs.

“There is now an increase in organ harvesting not just for money rituals, but also for transplants.

“This is because the need for organs is higher than the supply”, he added.

While noting that the issue of human trafficking was still on the front burner, Nwanwenne said that there was a need for partnership to end human trafficking.

He said that baby sales/baby factory operations were part of human trafficking and that there was a need for concerted efforts to end human trafficking.

“As security agencies we must be alive to our duties. We must join hands with government to fight the issue of human trafficking. I must also advice parents to stop putting pressure on their children to go and make money.

“Parents should control themselves and give birth to only the number of children they can cater for” he said.

Earlier, Segun Sanwo, representing the team lead for A-TIPSOM, Nigeria, said that the organisation believed that prevention was the bedrock to solving human trafficking.

Sanwo said that creating awareness was also a key to the fight against human trafficking, but that fighting the menace rested with individuals.

In her goodwill message, Mrs Adefunke Abiodun, first zonal commander, NAPTIP, Benin Zonal Office, said that NAPTIP couldn’t fight human trafficking alone.

She said that everyone needed to work collaboratively to make progress, as the fight against human trafficking was a collective thing.

Newsmen reports that the sensitisation programme was organised in partner with the Action Against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Immigrants in Nigeria (A-TIPSOM) Nigeria.

The programme was funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the International Ibero-America Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), a Spanish Government Foundation.

  • Why ‘side-chicks’ remain in business – Benin residents

Why ‘side-chicks’ remain in business – Benin residents

Some residents in Benin, the Edo capital, have said that some men would continue to keep mistresses, popularly called ‘side chicks’, due to their perceived benefits and strong grip.

The respondents’ submissions arise from the growing reports of infedility in the lives of men, especially the highly placed and celebrities in society.

Some men who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Benin claim that wives might never be able to compete with the side-chicks in terms of allure, attention to details and penchant for romance.

Mr Ojefia King, a businessman, revealed that most men had side-chicks for the fun of it.

According to him, side-chicks, most times do not have to expect anything except trips and sex from a man, whether married or single.

“Some side-chicks go after men because they are wealthy, while some others do it to meet their needs,” he said.

Also, Mr Larry Sideso, a Disc Jockey (DJ), said that men are attracted to the side-chicks because they had less stress and were always obedient and understanding of their needs and desires.

“I am married and I have a side-chick; she knows her place, no crossing of boundaries.

“My wife is aware of my side-chick.

“Like I said earlier, everybody knows their place. I don’t carry different ladies. I just have my wife and a side-chick.

“I love my wife so much. I won’t trade her for anything else, but my side-chick is only assisting,” he said.

Similarly, Mrs Ivie Idolor, a teacher, said that side-chicks were always answering the call of nature for men.

“If you study the creation of men critically, you will notice men have longer reproductive period than women.

“A man can still impregnate a woman even at 75 years of age, but a woman can’t give birth at such age.

“Thus, the sperms in a man can produce many children, which simply means when God said dominate and replenish the earth specifically means men’s duty to reproduce double.

“Men cannot help it, that’s what hormones have programmed them to do. So, when a guy has had enough of his main chick, he moves on and forgets about loving his main chick again,” she said.

On his part, Mr Richard Amekpa, a fashion designer, said men had side-chicks to get sexual satisfaction.

“Love, care, romance and sex are very important in a relationship or marriage.

“If a wife cannot satisfy the husband with that, he will definitely have someone else that will take her role.

“Total attention is very key to see the real beauty of a relationship.

“If a wife refuses to give the husband full attention, she is definitely opening the door for a side-chick,” he said.

However, Mr Isreal Osamuyi, a clergy, advised men to upgrade their wives to the standard they admire in other women.

Osamuyi said that most women hardly took care of themselves because they had one need or the other to take care of.

“Women that are married and have children always have one thousand and one responsibilies to attend to.

“So, there is little or no time at all to buy clothes, makeup and visit drinking bars or roam around with friends.

“I am not in support of men having side-chicks; but if I really want to peep into their world by trying to understand why, I think it’s purely because of insecurity,” he said.
