BREAKING: Gov Hyacinth Alia freezes all Benue State Govt accounts

Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, upon his swearing-in as the sixth Executive Governor of Benue State, alongside his Deputy, Dr. Sam Ode, has ordered all the State government accounts to be frozen.

Born in 1966, Alia becomes the second priest of the Roman Catholic Church to rule the state since creation in 1976.

Alia who was sworn in by the Chief Judge of Benue State, Hon. Justice Maurice Ikpambese, immediately froze all bank accounts belonging to the Benue State Government.

“May I announce that with immediate effect and until further notice, all Government Bank Accounts in all Banks are hereby frozen. A ‘Post No Debit’ instruction shall remain in force until all Signatories are changed. Any Bank that violates this instruction does so at its own risk,” he warned.

He said his administration would be guided by a seven-point development agenda featuring security of lives and property, industrialization, trade and investment, as well as human capital and social development.

Other priority areas include care for the environment to mitigate the effects of climate change, investment in
information and communications technology, Civil Service and local government systems reform, as well as the review of laws to make Benue state investor-friendly through political and economic governance.

“My fellow Benue citizens, these seven pillars represent a Social Contract between our Government and your good
selves. On these promises, we shall be held to account. You hired us with your votes to deliver on these promises. We will do everything in our powers to fulfill our side of the contract,” he promised.

He promised to work closely with security agencies and the Federal Government to ensure the safety of lives and property of Benue people.

“We will also work tirelessly to address the root causes of insecurity, such as poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion.”

The Catholic Priest pledged to prioritize job creation and economic empowerment by promoting private sector-led industrialization, with a particular emphasis on agriculture.

As part of measures to address the perennial problem of flooding in the state, Gov. Alia said Government would engage the Federal Authorities towards the dredging of the River Benue to address the flooding problem in Makurdi and other parts of the state.

According to him, Government has already set in motion machinery for clearing blocked drainage systems in Makurdi metropolis, pending when a comprehensive solution would be found to the perennial flooding of the state capital.

“To provide immediate succour to the army of unemployed youth in the state, we shall execute this exercise through a public works scheme or direct labour”.

He assured that in the next 100 days, work would commence on the design of a comprehensive infrastructure development programme involving unemployed graduate youth in continuation of government’s public works programme.

“In addition, our industrial parks and technology incubation centers, designed to bring the best out of our youth and provide gainful self-employment, would be equally unveiled within the period.”

To bring succour to the very poor people in the state, government had commenced negotiations with credible partners for soft revolving credit facilities based on good repayment record, particularly to women in all the council wards in the state, he said.

“In addition, we have commenced discussions for revamping the moribund Benue Microfinance Bank and repositioning it as a vehicle for microcredit delivery in the state. This would domesticate the delivery of microcredit to the poor as a cardinal pursuit of our administration.”

Alia is the second priest to govern the state as late Very Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu (12 June 1945 – 20 November 2005) became governor on 2 January, 1992, elected on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

2023 Census: I suspect a hidden agenda – Benue Governor, Ortom

Samuel Ortom the Benue state governor has called on the Federal Government to suspend the proposed National Population Census exercise slated to hold in  May 2023.

Ortom made the call on Wednesday when he received a delegation from the Middle Belt Forum led by its President, Dr Bitrus Pogu in Makurdi, the state capital.

He noted that it is not yet ripe to conduct the exercise, saying he suspects a hidden agenda towards the May date that the Federal Government has chosen.

The Governor added that if the exercise must hold, the FG should arrange for the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, to return to their homes.

He said, “The FG should suspend the issue of the census because it looks like the proposed census is coming with an agenda.

“So until they are able to restore security and all our IDPs return to their ancestral homes to give all of them opportunities to be counted in their homes of birth.

“Because I understand from the National Population Commission that those to be counted must be counted in their localities”.

The state has the worst record of herdsmen attack in the country, with thousands of persons killed within a year.

Benue has over two million persons living in different IDPs camps across the state.

Barely one week ago, the dreaded killer herdsmen invaded one of the IDPs’ camps and killed at least 35 persons.

“Benue is in ICU” – Gov-elect, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia tells Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has met with the Benue State Governor-elect, Hyacinth Alia, at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Wednesday.

Speaking to State House correspondents after the closed door meeting with the president, Alia frowned at the condition of the Benue State civil service.

According to him, the state’s civil service is in a state of near collapse and in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but he has come to infuse life into it and keep it moving.

Alia noted that the state owes backlog of salaries, pensions and gratuities and he hopes to remain focus and tackle the myriad of issues on his desk when he takes over office on May 29.

Asked if he would be probing his predecessor against the backdrop of his letter to the Benue Investment Property Company, warning them of financial transactions with the incumbent governor, Alia said:

“I haven’t looked at the books, so I wouldn’t want to be quite preemptive. Once I’m sworn in, I know that what the good people of Benue want is progress and development.

”And there’s so much that we need to put on track for things to work. Benue state is an agrarian zone and so we must focus on agriculture and upgrade it.

“Benue is very capable of feeding the whole nation, so we are not just the food basket of the nation by name and I am hoping that we will up our game in agriculture and take care of the rest as well.

“It is sad that the life of civil service in the state is near collapse, it’s in the ICU, so I just need to get in there and infuse life in it and keep it moving.

”We have a lot of backlog of unpaid salaries, pensions and gratuities. So, already I got much on the desk to keep a good focus on and I remain hopeful that I am going to do just that.”

The governor-elect on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), commended President Buhari for making a firm decision for the elections to take place.

On the animosity that pervades the state over the anti-grazing law, Alia said: “One thing must remain clear, when you say that the atmosphere was quite tensed, let it be on record that the Benue people are very hospital people.

”We are very friendly people and over the ages, we’ve lived all cultures and different people. And so if some mishap had happened in the last eight years, thank God the eight years has expired.

“I want everyone to feel that Benue is a home for everyone. Remember, before I am stepping in there as a governor, our history reveals that we have all cultures in Benue and so it is, we have all cultures in Nigeria in Benue.

”So I believe my time will not be any different. If there were some errors, I am coming to correct them.

”But I know for sure we are hospitable, we are friendly and the Benue State Assembly is also a knowledgeable Assembly.

”So the 10th Assembly is going to work for the people and do the work of the people. If by chance anybody perceived us to be a hostile state, please we are a renewed hope of Benue, a hospitable, friendly, law and order people.

”So, we are all welcome to Benue as we move in there.”

He disclosed this in his victory speech yesterday

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had declared Alia the winner of last Saturday’s governorship election in the State.

Alia of the All Progressives Congress, APC, defeated his closest rival, Titus Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, and Herman Hembe of the Labour Party to emerge winner of the poll.

  • Court orders removal of Benue LP dep. governorship candidate’s name from INEC list

Court orders removal of Benue LP dep. governorship candidate’s name from INEC list

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, ordered the removal of the name of Mr Idu Onyiloyi, Labour Party (LP) deputy governorship candidate for Benue elections from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s list.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment, also stopped Onyiloyi from further parading himself as the deputy governorship candidate of LP in the state for Saturday’s poll having voluntarily withdrawn his candidature.

Dr Ochechi Adejor had sued the LP, INEC and Onyiloyi as 1st to 3rd defendants respectively.

In the originating summons filed on Feb. 6, the plaintiff asked the court to determine whether having regard to the combined provisions of sections 221, 222 and Paragraph 15 of the Third Schedule,  has the power to substitute Onyiloyi’s name with his, having voluntarily withdrawn his candidature as deputy governorship candidate in an affidavit he deposed to and a letter transmitted to the party.

Adejor, therefore, sought an order compelling INEC to publish his name as LP’s deputy governorship candidate for Benue election.

He also sought an order restraining the commission from further accepting Onyiloyi’s names as candidate representing the party in the poll.

Delivering the judgment, the judge said he had found that the evidence of the Plaintiff (Adejor) in the case was credible.

“I find that the plaintiff has proved its case by credible evidence and is entitled to judgement in his favour and I so hold,” he said.

Justice Ekwo declared that Adejor was the LP’s valid candidate for the deputy governorship position for Benue election, having been validly nominated as candidate for the position following the voluntary withdrawal of Onyiloyi.

He declared that the withdrawal of Onyiloyi from the race subsisted and the publication of his name as the deputy governorship candidate was unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect.

The judge, therefore, gave an order of perpetual injunction restraining INEC from further accepting or publishing Onyiloyi’s name or any other person other than Adejor as the candidate representing LP for the office of the deputy governorship of Benue at the 2023 general elections.
