SURPRISE! Ortom back-pedals, withdraws petition against Senator-Elect Zam

Benue Governor Samuel Ortom surprisingly has back-pedaled by withdrawing his petition against the election of Senator-Elect Chief Titus Zam of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Recall the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Zam as Senator-Elect for Benue North West.

Zam polled 143,141 votes to defeat Governor Samuel Ortom of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 106,880 votes.

Addressing reporters at Government House Makurdi, Ortom said: “Even though there was glaring evidence of malpractices including non-transmission of results electronically during the conduct of the Benue North West Senatorial election, I have taken the decision to withdraw my case from the tribunal. As the Bible says in John 3:27 ‘A man can receive nothing, except it is given to him from heaven’.

The Governor added: ‘’The decision to withdraw my case from the court is in the interest of peace and without prejudice to the suits filed by other candidates of our party, PDP.

‘’As a leader of PDP, I will continue to support the party in collaboration with other leaders to enable it to bounce back from the mistakes and drawbacks that are affecting it at the moment.

‘’Let me reassure the people of Benue State that as Governor, I will continue to provide selfless service in all sectors of development till the end of my tenure on May 29, 2023.

‘’For those I might have offended in this journey of serving the state and our country, I seek their forgiveness, as I also forgive those who have offended me.’’

APC cautions against granting Ortom’s loan request

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned commercial banks against granting loan request by Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue, whose tenure will end on May 29.

The Director of Communications, Alia/Ode Campaign Organisation, Mr. Tersoo Kula, said this in a statement on Saturday in Makurdi.

Kula alleged that the State House of Assembly had on Tuesday approved another N1 billion revolving overdraft for Ortom, saying that such loan would deepen the debt profile of the state.

“We have gathered on good authority that on Tuesday, Uba led Benue House of Assembly covertly approved an N1billion revolving overdraft for Ortom led executive.

“We are surprised that the house is still approving loans for Ortom having known that he is left with less than three months in office.

“We wonder why someone who wants to govern the state will continue indulging in mischief targeted at increasing the already frightening loan burden for the leadership to come,” Kula said.

He wondered why Ortom was still finding ways to multiply the state debt at the twilight of his administration and called on the people to reject the move.

“What is it that Ortom thinks he can achieve within the remaining two months of his tenure that he is now adding to the heavy debts he had incurred for the state,” he said.

Suspected herdsmen invade Benue communities, 50 feared killed

At least 50 persons have been feared killed during a four-day attack by suspected herdsmen who invaded some communities in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that the affected communities include Adam, Iyarinwa, Abamde Ityuluv, Waya Boagundu, Agura Ayaga and Azege areas in Turan Council Ward, Kwande LGA.

The immediate past Chairman of the LGA, Tertsua Yarkbewan, while speaking to journalists on the phone on Monday, said over 50 people were killed during the attacks by suspected herdsmen.

He said, “My people are being massacred like goats. What we have been hearing is that there are Fulani attacks, especially in Turan in the Kwande axis. Even places where there were no attacks before are witnessing attacks.

“Now, every day you hear that five or four people were killed, you cannot have the exact number of those that have been killed because some corpses are still in the bush and yet to be recovered. But looking at the number of people being killed in the past few days, I think the casualty figures should be over 50.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, when contacted, debunked the casualty figure.

She said, “They have not given me the report but it is not up to 50; the initial report they gave me there was a change of leadership of the division. The new DPO just reported last Friday and when I asked him to give me a situation report he said the area is calm now.”

Meanwhile, the governorship candidate of the APC, Hyacinth Alia, in a statement issued by one of his media aides, Isaac Uzaan, condemned the attacks on communities in Kwande and Gwer-West by suspected herders.

He also expressed deep concern over the herdsmen invasion of communities in the state and the gruesome killing of citizens, adding that the situation had become a new normal in the state.

“The Benue APC governorship candidate faulted the resurgence of the brutal killings of Benue citizens, wondering why such was coming at the heels of the presidential and National Assembly elections that produced Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president-elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement said.

In his reaction, the acting Chairman of PDP in the state, Isaac Teryila, condemned the attacks that resulted in the loss of people’s lives, the destruction of property including farms and the consequent displacement of people from their lands in the state.

“Those attacks, if not halted by security forces, will further worsen the problem of low voters’ turnout at the coming governorship and state House of Assembly elections slated to hold on March 11, 2023, across the state.”

Just In: Benue House members injured as Ortom’s convoy involved in auto crash

Many aides including two members of the Benue State House of Assembly were injured when the convoy of the state governor, Samuel Ortom, was involved in a car crash.

The accident occurred on Friday morning when the governor and the Peoples Democratic Party supporters were traveling to the Utokon community of Ado Local Government Area in continuation of the party governorship campaign rally.

  • 2023: Ortom explains reason why PDP ‘ll retain power in Benue

2023: Ortom explains reason why PDP ‘ll retain power in Benue

Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue has given reasons why the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will retain power in the state in the forthcoming elections.

Ortom spoke on Thursday at a political rally in Oju and Obi Local Government Areas of the state.

He said that the party had done all that it needed to do to win the forthcoming general elections with clear margins.

“As we speak, all the 276 councillors in the state are members of PDP while 26 out of 30 members of the state assembly are also members of our party.

“We also have seven House of Representatives members out of 11 and all the three Senators from Benue are members of PDP. Also, the Deputy Governor and the Governor are members of PDP.

“This goes to show that Benue is purely a PDP state and this we will maintain,” Ortom said.

He advised the people to arm themselves with their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), emphasising that the forthcoming elections were different from the past ones.

“The era of snatching ballot boxes is over. Now is the era of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS).

“With the introduction of BIVAS, you must be there at the polling unit to vote because the machine must capture you before you will vote. You should take this election very seriously,” the governor advised.

Meanwhile, the party’s governorship candidate, Mr Titus Uba, appreciated the people for their prayers while he was on medical vacation abroad.

Uba encouraged them to entrust him and his deputy, Mr John Ngbede, with their mandate, promising that they would never be disappointed if they gave them their votes.

He said that they would consolidate on Ortom’s outstanding legacies, stating that the governor  had built a solid foundation for security and they would leverage on it.

“We are blessed with arable land in the state, as such, we will use agriculture to develop the state through modern agricultural techniques,” Uba said.

Also, Ngbede said that they would build on what Ortom had done, pledging that they would not leave the civil servants out in their programmes.

The Senator representing Benue South Senatorial District, Sen. Abba Moro, promised to facilitate construction of the Otukpo-Obi-Oju-Yahe road and its completion before the end of his second term.

“The All Progressives Congress (APC) did not give you hope, as such, you should reject it and vote for all candidates of PDP from the bottom to the top,” Moro said.

Earlier, the Acting state Chairman of PDP, Mr Isaac Mffo, said that a vote for the party means securing the future of their children.

  • My mission in politics is to rescue Benue from PDP’s gross maladministration-says Rev. Fr Alia, APC guber candidate

My mission in politics is to rescue Benue from PDP’s gross maladministration-says Rev. Fr Alia, APC guber candidate

The All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Benue state, Rev. Fr Dr Hyacinth Alia, said on Wednesday that the major reason why he ventured into politics was borne out of the wish for collective effort to rescue the state from the maladministration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Dr Alia said his ambition to govern Benue state was more of struggle than politics, adding it was “more of a movement than contest.”

Rev. Alia, who spoke on Wednesday at the flag off of governorship campaign in Gboko, Benue state, pleaded with the people of Benue to team up with him “to rescue the soul of our dear state, Benue, from the abyss of gross maladministration as perpetrated by this PDP government.”

He said the failed PDP state government had already gone down.

“But we must deliberately arise and be willing to be used of God to bring His will to come to pass in Benue State.

“Much more is demanded of you and me. After the flag off today, you should not go to sleep. We are not underrating our opponents, having seen their desperation; they can do anything to retain themselves in power to inflict more pains on our great people.

“We must sacrifice our comfort, our energy, our sleep and our resources for a greater Benue.

“I therefore call on the good people of Benue State to go out en-masse and collect your voters’ cards and vote for APC Candidates from top to bottom.”

He said his entry into politics was equal to that of his priesthood, saying “many years ago, I offered myself to go into the Catholic Priesthood to re-route lost eternal destinies and prepare people spiritually for eternity.

“The work of a priest is not restricted to pulpit alone but to ensure that there are basic necessities here on earth which if denied that spiritual work for eternity becomes foolhardy.

“In the church, or outside of it, honesty, integrity and accountability are not just relevant, but necessary. And without which life becomes brutish.

“The same people that are in the church are also in the civil service, in the markets, on the farms and even in politics etc. All these people are lamenting, and truly, the church must act, even as the good news must be preached in all aspects of our society.

“Somebody must take the bull by the horns and halt the destructive slide we are experiencing. Hence, I have joined the teeming good people of Benue to take the state out of the woods.”

He stated that “leadership is given by God. But politics is not a one man game, but a game of the many. Every one contributes his or her quota to arrive at victory. I therefore stand here publicly, today, to say that my gubernatorial candidacy has not been due to my overwhelming intelligence. In every contest, one person would always take the lead.”

He continued: “Today we gather here to answer a call to return Benue State to responsibility and accountability. Ours is to shape governance in a way that the citizens can gleefully follow, with confidence in their leadership.

“In more ways than one, this is what has been lacking in the present administration. The citizens have lost hope in a government that has brazenly, in broad day light, misused the general heritage and commonwealth of the Benue people,” he told the gathering.

He lamented that more Benue indigenes in recent times had been pushed into utter penury.

“The difference between the unemployed and the civil servant is almost nonexistent. A grossly depleted civil service, non-existent bureaucracy, lack of incentives and ghost workers syndrome govern our public sector.

“Civil servants are perennially scared of retirement where all their years of servitude are discountenanced by a malicious administration that wickedly subjects them to a life of pain and dejection with their pensions and gratuities denied them.

“For eight years, there has been massive diversion of state finances for personal gains with impunity. Above all, the local government, as a tier of government has been rendered completely dysfunctional,” he said.

According to him, “Benue State rightly is nationally acclaimed ‘Food Basket of the Nation’. However, farming no longer holds any incentives to our teaming farming population who are abandoned and without farm input such as fertilizer, quality seeds and mechanized implements.

“The little that is produced is ravished away due to lack of storage facilities, while there are no rural roads to convey the products to the markets. The lack of agricultural extension services means our rural dwellers are mentally stocked in archaic ways of farming which limit their general output and dividends at the end of the cropping season.

“Two major rivers, the rivers Benue and Katsina Ala dissect the Benue topography, alongside many subsidiary streams and water ways, limitless Fadama, all lying in waste for lack of enhanced irrigation for all year round farming which is the best form of modern agriculture.

“Every sector of the Benue state economy requires a peculiar intervention. Our educational sector that has become nearly comatose. In most rural settings, entire primary schools lack the teachers to run them with many closing down. There are no positive inducements to lure our youths into teaching which ordinarily is the noblest profession. The school feeding program of the federal government, a plausible policy aimed at encouraging school enrollment especially in the villages has become a major conduit pipe for siphoning resources meant for the human capital development of our people in Benue State.

“The failures of this administration are out there in the public domain for all to behold. I will therefore not spend your precious time on futile lamentations, which cannot deliver us from the present rot.”

He lampooned the PDP candidate, whom he said “comes with the mantra to continue from where the incumbent governor would leave. What a pity! What is there to continue from? He says that Benue has made great progress under his mentor. Well, we don’t blame him; his would be continuation of lack of capacity, ineptitude, uncertainty, under-development, hunger and insecurity.”

He claimed that the essentials for comfortable living had continued to elude Benue people.

“With hope denied, many pensioners have died, leaving their families destitute. Many must have died with anger in their hearts, anger towards the government that has perpetrated and perpetuated such injustice on them,” he noted.

He boasted that he was endowed with adequate knowledge and exposure to ensure justice, security and peace to Benue.

He enumerated some of endowments of the state to include, a huge human capital from a growing and educated population. (Benue boasts of some of the brightest and fertile minds in Nigeria); large and fertile land mass across the state – from where the state rightly derives its name as the ‘food basket’ of the nation; Abundant agricultural and mineral resources; great potentials for oil and gas exploration; existence of rivers, among others.

“We have done our researches and planning and shall hit the ground running immediately we are sworn in, turning all these potentials into viable and verifiable achievements that would propel our state to an enviable position amongst the community of Nigerian states.

“We will Establish Permanent Integrated Forward Operation Bases for security men at all the flash points where there have been cases of armed attacks and displacement of people; evolve a policy for the rehabilitation and resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) into their ancestral homes; establish emergency toll-free call centers and short codes to ease reaction from security outfits in the state; strengthen the implementation of the Anti-Open Grazing Law for enhanced security, economic growth, and the development of Benue state; strengthen the operational capacity of existing security organisations in the state; reconcile all lingering land crises between communities and individuals to pave way for peaceful coexistence and development in the state.”

He promised if elected as Governor, he would resuscitate the state government agricultural agencies like Benue Agricultural Development Company (ADC), Benue Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (BNARDA), and Benue Tractor Hiring Agency (BENTHA) to encourage modernized agricultural practices in the state.

He also promised to revamp the Agricultural Training Institutes across Benue State to facilitate the training of low and middle level agricultural manpower.

“Give priority attention to the timely supply of subsidized farm inputs, especially fertilizer and quality seeds, to farmers through the revamped Benue Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (BNARDA) in the state.

“Ensure the revival of the fisheries department under the Ministry of Agriculture, alongside all the important fishing festivals in Benue State.

“Empower ministries, departments and agencies to propel and promote independent development of the state as an agrarian society, with capacity for food security and self sufficiency.

“Increase the capacity of the state’s strategic grain reserves and establish public modern warehousing facilities with cold storage (for perishable farm products) where local farmers and cottage industries can store finished products and raw materials.

“Upgrade and equip all Primary Health Centers (PHCs) via the Primary Healthcare Board in the council wards.

“Establish at least a functional diagnostic laboratory in each senatorial district of Benue State.”

On education, he promised to ensure the effective implementation of compulsory free primary education throughout the state.

    He promises to “engage and train adequate teachers for public schools with an emphasis on science, computer, technical, and mathematics teachers to re-enkindle public trust in public schools;

“Assist the education ministry in modifying the extant curriculum to capture the major indigenous languages in the state, viz., Tiv, Idoma, and Igede; and,

“Provide adequate and timely motivation to teachers through enhanced emoluments, training, and a conducive work environment,” among others.

  • 2023: Gov. Ortom wants INEC to make adequate provisions for Benue IDPs

2023: Gov. Ortom wants INEC to make adequate provisions for Benue IDPs

Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make adequate provisions for the over two million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state ahead of 2023 general elections.

He made the call at a roundtable discussion, tagged; “Contemporary Security Challenges and their Effects on 2023 General Elections”, organised by the Platinum Post Newspaper on Tuesday in Abuja.

The governor, represented by Prof. Magdalene Dura, his Special Adviser on Millenium Development Goals, said INEC should create polling units at IDPs’ camps and also engage its members as ad-hoc staff during elections.

This, he said, would ensure credibility of the elections at such centres while giving them a sense of belonging.

He also stressed the need for the Federal Government to ensure more security at the country’s borders, saying that the porous nature at the various borders had led to the infiltration of criminal elements into the country.

The Benue Governor alleged that Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) are already in wrong hands ahead of the 2023 general elections, saying there is the need for INEC to raise its game.

“There is need for government and INEC to ensure credibility of the electoral process,” he said.

He also expressed concern over the fate of over two million IDPs in his state whom, he said, had been rendered homeless as a result of insurgency.

He appealed to the Federal Government to come to the assistance of IDPs in Benue as it is doing to other IDPs in other parts of the country.

“There is lack of equity and justice in Nigeria. INEC needs to have comprehensive data on the IDPs so that they can create polling units for IDPs,” he said.

He added that since the possibility of IDPs returning to their homes to vote before the elections is slim, INEC must open discussions with them to know what they need.

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, who chaired the occasion, stressed the need to ensure the safety and security of voters, election personnel, materials, candidates, party agents, observers and media practitioners during the electioneering process.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Usman Mohammed, Gov. Ganduje called on the electorate to eschew acts of violence and other negative tendencies that could mar the conduct of 2023 general elections.

“The importance of the topic in relation to the nation’s current security situation in the face of an election cannot be over emphasised.

“And more so, my state, Kano, is among states in the federation, and particularly in the North that have had one security challenge or the other, which we have, with the will of God Almighty, been able to surmount.

“Kano is now one of the most peaceful states in the federation. Insecurity is one of the biggest challenges facing the conduct of the 2023 general elections.

“Ensuring the safety and security of voters, election personnel, materials, candidates, party agents, observers, the media and transporters among others is paramount,” Ganduje stressed.

He added that the responsibility had become more challenging in the context of the current asymmetric security situation in the country.

Ganduje said with few months to 2023 general elections, there was no better time for proactive measures than now to ensure that the country was secured enough for elections to be held across the nooks and crannies.

“However, despite the severity of the security challenges facing 2023 polls, I believe that the relevant security agencies have the potency to ensure that the process is made peaceful and secured by synergising effectively.

He advised that security agencies should, however, review their operational strategies and optimally deploy all operational assets towards addressing current and evolving general security threats ahead of the elections.

Mr Edwin Olofu, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Platinum Post, in his opening remarks, said the theme of the roundtable: “Contemporary Security Challenges And Their Effects On The 2023 General Elections”, is not only timely but very important.

This, he said, was considering the fact that there was a relationship between security and the peaceful conduct of the forthcoming general elections.

“Going by the campaigns and debates on issues relating to the governance of the country by candidates of the leading political parties.

“There is no doubt that the election is potentially going to be the most keenly contested in Nigeria’s political history.

“As members of the fourth estate of the realm, it is incumbent on us to mobilise the citizenry to prove the naysayers who are already instilling fears in the minds of the electorate that the election could be marred due to the spate of violent crimes in parts of the country,” he said.

He explained that the objective of the roundtable was to find answers to some nagging questions posed by the current security situation in the country.

Olofu said the roundtable was also to mobilise the electorate to exercise their franchise without fear or hindrance.

Commissioner of Police, Mr Kene Onwuemelie, who represented the Inspector General of Police (IGP) at the event, assured that the forthcoming general elections would hold in all parts of the country without rancor.

“All arrangements have been put in place to ensure violent-free elections. We are using this opportunity to warn trouble makers to have a change of mind, as the hands of the law will not spare them,” he said.

He added that the police would work with other security agencies to ensure the protection of lives and property before, during and after the elections.

Newsmen reports that the roundtable highlighted the need for government to sensitise the public on the power of voting, and the need to eschew violent conduct, before, during, and after the polls through effective media campaigns.

The event was attended by representatives of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Civil Society Organisations and the International Republican Institute (IRI) among others.

The Igbo are accommodating and hard working – Ortom

The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has expressed confidence in the Igbo people, saying they are accommodating and hard-working.

Ortom, who disclosed in Makurdi, the state capital, on Wednesday when Igbo PDP Forum paid him a courtesy visit, said the South-Easterners are accommodating and hard working.

According to Ortom, the Igbos are peaceful, stressing that they have the ability to live with other ethnic groups in the country.

He vowed to continue speaking to authority on the incessant attacks on Benue people by suspected armed herdsmen.

“The Igbo are accommodating and hard working. They are a group that can live with other ethnic groups and not like those that are killing my people and they want me to keep quiet.

“I will never keep quiet concerning incessant attacks on my people by herdsmen until the authorities do the right thing. I will continue to speak against injustice,” he said.

  • I remain LP Senatorial candidate for Benue North West – Lawmaker

I remain LP Senatorial candidate for Benue North West – Lawmaker

Rep. Mark Gbillah (LP-Benue) said he remained the candidate of Labour Party (LP) for Benue North-West Senatorial in the 2023 General Elections and not that of New the Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Gbillah said this on Friday in Abuja at a news conference.

He said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published his name for both LP and NNPP for the Benue North-West Senatorial district elections.

He said the publication was without his knowledge, adding the he had initiated legal action against INEC and NNPP in order to correct error.

He said INEC published his name as sent by NNPP even as he had already resigned his membership of the party and withdrawn his senatorial candidature on the platform of the NNPP.

The said his resignation and withdrawal from ANPP candidature was accompanied by an affidavit he deposed to on July 7.

He said he joined the LP and participated in its rescheduled senatorial primaries for the district on July 11.

He said the error occurred because of NNPP’s failure to upload the name of the candidate that replaced him to the INEC portal within the timeline provided by the electoral umpire.

The House of Reps member said he was returned unopposed as the LP candidate in the election, adding that the documents are all in INEC’s possession.

“It is therefore curious why INEC still published my name as the candidate for both parties when it is privy to all the above-mentioned facts and accompanying documents,” he said.
