Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems and Afro-pop singer Burna Boy were big-time winners at the 23rd BET Awards held on Sunday night in Los Angeles.

Whilst Tems and Burna scooped home one award each, another Nigerian singer,  Davido delivered an electrifying performance at the event.

After losing two of her three nominations, Tems snagged the “Best Collaboration” gong for her contribution to Future’s ‘Wait For U’ which also features Canadian rapper, Drake.

‘Wait For U’ won the ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ at the 2023 Grammys.

The BET is the second major award the song, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart last year, has won.

Prior to winning an award plaque at the 2023 BET Awards, Tems lost the “Best Female R&B/Pop Artist” category to SZA, and the “Viewer’s Choice” award to Beyoncé.

Similarly, Burna Boy lost the “Best Male R&B/Pop Artist” to Chris Brown and Usher, and the “Best Video Director” to Teyana Taylor.

However, the ‘African Giant’ crooner scooped the “Best International Act” award for a record fourth time.

Beyoncé and SZA tie for most wins at this year’s BET Awards (3 each).

  • Tems tasks Nigerian female musicians on self confidence

Tems tasks Nigerian female musicians on self confidence

Winner of the Best International Act at the BET Awards 2022, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has applauded Nigerian female musicians for believing in themselves in the entertainment industry.

Since she set out with her melodious track entitled, ‘Try Me’ in 2019, Tems has continued to warm the hearts of the world till she got meritorious attention a few years ago.

“Things are changing for sure. I think more women are believing in themselves, I think more women are coming out and realizing that they can do it,” Tems said in a recent interview.

She added: “When things like that happen, the economy opens up. Conversations open up and there’s more spotlight on the whole country because it’s not just about the men. There’s now something new, something fresh, something different.”

Currently, the singer and songwriter is topping US Billboard Hot 100 chart as she becomes the first African artist to have five entries on the world chart, and Nigerian with the most entries.

This is coming with her recent affiliation with Beyonce on a single entitled, ‘Move’ debuting at number 55 on the chart, dated August 13, 2022.

Tems proved her writing prowess on Beyonce’s newest single. The song is off the American singer’s ‘Renaissance’ album featuring the Nigerian star and Grace Jones.

Tems tasks Nigerian female musicians on self confidence

The new feat is the latest in a series of many Tems’ bodies of work that are hitting new high points on the world music chart.

‘Essence remix’ featuring Wizkid and Justin Beiber peaked at No.9, followed up by Drake’s ‘Fountains’ that peaked at number 26 in September 2016, ‘Wait for You’ ft. Future & Drake peaked on top of the charts (at No.1.). She also scored her first solo entry recently with her 2020 single ‘Free Mind’ debuting at number 90.

With this, Tems broke her four-entry tie with Afropop songster Wizkid with whom she recently held the record for most Billboard Hot 100 entries by a Nigerian performer.

Tems’ achievements in 2022 include a feature on the soundtrack of Marvel Studio’s latest production; ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ as well as being the first-ever female African artiste to win the BET Best International Act; also nominated for ‘Best New Artiste’ and first ever African artiste (alongside Wizkid) to win a major BET award category- Best Collaboration Award. Her song, ‘Vibe Out’ was one of the songs on Former US President, Barack Obama’s annual summer playlist.

With two EPs (Broken Ears and If Orange was a Place) behind her, Tems is yet to release her debut album but she seems ready to take over Nigeria’s music industry which is highly dominated by men.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the singer rose to prominence after she was featured on Wizkid’s 2020 single, “Essence”, which reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 after the release of a remixed version with an additional feature from Justin Bieber, and earned her a Grammy Award nomination.

That same year, she was featured on Drake’s song, “Fountains”.

On 25 September 2020, she released her debut extended play, For Broken Ears. Tems released her second extended play, If Orange Was a Place (2021), after being signed to RCA Records.

In 2022, Tems’ vocals from her song “Higher” were sampled by Future on his single, “Wait for U”, which led to her being credited as a featured artist on the song.

It debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first African artist to debut at number one and the second Nigerian artist to top the chart.

Tems covered Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry” for the Marvel movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, released in July 2022 and in the same month her song “Free Mind” from her debut EP debuted on the Hot 100.

Throughout her career, Tems has received multiple award nominations, winning two NAACP Image Awards, two BET Awards and a Soul Train Music Award.

  • Black lives celebrated, mourned at emotional BET Awards

Black power, suffering and the fight for justice took centre stage at the BET awards on Sunday, the first Black celebrity event in the U.S. since nationwide mass protests broke out this month over systemic racism.

The show, which celebrates Black excellence in music, film, sports and philanthropy, was filled with speeches, songs, images of protests and the names of dozens of Black men and women who have died at the hands of police in recent years.

The BET Awards was established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other American minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year.

Beyonce, who was given a humanitarian award by former U.S. first lady Michelle Obama for her charitable initiatives, urged the Black community to use its vote in upcoming U.S. elections to dismantle “racist and unequal systems.”

“We have to vote like our life depends on it, because it does,” the singer said.

The awards show, broadcast live for the first time in its 20-year history on America’s mainstream CBS channel, featured commercials from the likes of Coca-Cola, Ford, Nissan, P&G, L’Oreal and Facebook that both celebrated the achievements of Black people and highlighted the challenges they face.

A remixed version of veteran New York rap group Public Enemy’s 1989 anthem “Fight the Power,” featuring photos of this month’s street protests, opened the show, whose slogan was “Our culture can’t be canceled.”

Da Baby’s performance of “Rockstar” began with the rapper singing while lying on the ground under the knee of a police officer, in a recreation of last month’s arrest and death of George Floyd in Minneapolis that sparked the protests.

Newcomer Roddy Ricch wore a “Black Lives Matter” shirt, John Legend played his ballad, “We Will Never Break,” and Alicia Keys sang an emotional new song, “Perfect Way to Die,” about the black lives lost over the decades.

The show was a mix of pre-recorded performances and virtual appearances because of the coronavirus pandemic that shut down production of television shows in mid-March.

Awards went to Ricch’s “Please Excuse Me for Being Anti-Social,” which won album of the year, Megan Thee Stallion for best female hip-hop artist and Lizzo was named best female R&B/pop artist.

Gymnast Simone Biles and basketball star LeBron James were named sportswoman and man of the year respectively. Nigerian musician Burna Boy was named best international act.

Although Nigerian singer was a no-show at the event held at Microsoft Theatre, he was represented by his mother, Bose Ogulu.

Bose walked gingerly to the stage and announced he has a message from her son: Please remember that you were Africans, BEFORE ??YOU??WERE??ANYTHING” – Bose said.

Each year, the BET Awards ceremony celebrates Black entertainers in music, television, movies, sports, and more.

“”This is our show celebrating our people and our talent and our network. This is the biggest night in entertainment,” said host Regina Hall.
