Havertz leaves Germany squad to seal Chelsea move

Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Kai Havertz is set to sign for Chelsea in a deal worth about £71m, including add-ons.

The 21-year-old Germany international has been given permission to leave the national squad’s training camp and will travel to London before having a medical.

Havertz will become Frank Lampard’s sixth major signing of the summer.

The deal is expected to be completed within 24 hours.

Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga remains Chelsea’s record signing when he joined from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for a £71m fee.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller said he was “grateful to the national coach that Kai can now sort things out with our support on site in London”.

Havertz, who has seven caps, was an unused substitute in Germany’s 1-1 Nations League draw with Spain on Thursday, with the German team set to face Switzerland on Sunday.

Last week, the Bundesliga side’s head coach Peter Bosz said he “doesn’t expect Havertz to train with us again”.

Last season Havertz scored 18 goals in 45 appearances for Leverkusen, including seven in nine games after the Bundesliga season restarted.

Kai Havertz completed a medical with Chelsea in London on Sunday, reports have claimed.

The Blues have agreed to pay an initial £72m to Bayer Leverkusen, with an additional £18m of add-ons included.

The 21-year-old will sign a five-year contact with his new club.

And Bild’s head of football writer Christian Falk has confirmed Havertz passed a medical in England before linking up with the German national team on Monday.

He will become Chelsea’s club-record signing and the most expensive German player of all-time.

Chelsea will have to register Havertz by Thursday if he plays for Germany to be able to apply for an exemption so he won’t have to quarantine upon his arrival in the UK.

If they don’t Havertz risks missing the start of the Premier League season.

Dutch club announce signing of Kai Havertz

Heracles Almelo have jokingly announced the signing of Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz after Peter Bosz claimed he was joining the Dutch club following their Europa League exit.

Leverkusen’s European campaign came to an end against Inter on Monday night as they were beaten 2-1 by the Serie A side in Dusseldorf.

Nicolo Barella and Romelu Lukaku had given Inter a commanding lead inside 21 minutes, before Havertz reduced the deficit three minutes later.

According to Goal, Chelsea are keen on signing the 21-year-old although Leverkusen have warned that their star man will only be sold if the Blues pay their asking price.

And Bosz was asked whether the Germany international had played his final match for the club in a post-match press conference following his side’s defeat to Antonio Conte’s Inter.

He said: “Yes, I can exclusively announce he’ll play for Heracles Almelo.”

And following Bosz’s declaration, Heracles were quick to post a joke announcement that revealed that they had signed the forward.
