Release Nnamdi Kanu – Reps tell FG

The House of Representatives has advised the Federal Government to release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Nnamdi Kanu as a panacea for peace in the South East geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

Chairman of the House Adhoc committee, Rep. Obinna Aguocha stated this at the resumed hearing of the committee set up to interface with relevant security agencies to reduce kidnapping, assassinations and banditry in and around Isiukwuato and Umunnochi Local Government Area of Abia State.

He said: “As we navigate the complexities of security concerns, we must also be prepared to tackle the root causes of these issues at their core and work to ensure lasting solutions that would stand the test of time.

“For absolute peace, reduction of crime and criminality, investment in meaningful infrastructure development, ending the unproductive sit-at-home and improving economic growth and opportunities in the Southeast, starts with the government’s recognition of the rule of law, justics, and equitable inclusion of the Southeast zone in the project Nigeria and the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from unlawful detention to ensure lasting peace and security in the entire region”.

Recall that the House before going on its annual recess had pledged to wade into the matter following a similar demand through a motion, but yet to take any action to that effect.

Rep. Aguocha further stated, “the challenges we face are not mere statistics or headlines; they are real-life manifestations that affect the lives of our people, disrupt the functioning of our institutions and communities, thus impeding the growth of our region”.

According to the lawmaker, instances of criminal activities, banditry, kidnapping, assassinations, communal and religious clashes, and threats to life have shaken the very foundation of our societies.

“As leaders and stakeholders, it is incumbent upon us to come together, transcending our differences, to find sustainable solutions that will quell these threats and pave the way for a brighter future.

“We recognize that insecurity cannot be combated by one entity alone; it does require a collective, multi-faceted approach that encompasses various perspectives and expertise of law enforcement agencies, community leaders, policymakers, scholars, and citizens”, he added.

According to him, the ongoing engagement will provide the opportunity to harness the diverse perspectives and channel them into coherent, actionable strategies for peace.

“The cross-border dynamics of the primary focus areas bring additional complexity to the challenges of the task ahead. The common borders, shared with four other states connect the primary focus areas to Ebonyi State via Isiagu, Enugu State via Agwu, Imo state via Okigwe and Anambra via Awka.

“The opportunity for interstate collaboration presents itself and must be explored to foster regional participation. The challenges faced by one state ripple across its neighbors, and therefore, our strategies for resolution must be all inclusive. By synergizing our resources, expertise, and perspectives, we can create a stronger front against insecurity and strengthen the bonds that bind us together.

“This committee wishes to applaud the efforts of state governments in the Southeast region as well as the Federal government for its demonstrable commitment to peace and security in the Southeast”, he stated.

Rep. Amobi Ogah, sponsor of the motion that led to the set up of this Adhoc Committee accused the police of using multiple checkpoints in the troubled areas to extort money from innocent citizens, instead of combing the bushes to flush out the criminals as demanded by the House through its resolution.

He said of all the prayers, including setting up of a joint security task force to comb the bushes, nothing has been done, but rather the mounting of multiple checkpoints, which he described as “embarrassing”, while kidnapping is yet on the increase.

“I want this to be on record that the police are doing nothing, but collecting money”, he said.

To save the situation, Chairman of the committee called for a closed door session, for the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, Mr. Kenechukwu Onwumelie to brief the panel.

Ekpa working for DSS – Emma Powerful alleges

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has alleged that the factional leader, Mr Simon Ekpa was working for the Department of State Services (DSS), to bring down the group.

Publicity Secretary of the group, Emma Powerful made the allegations in a press release on Monday, claiming that Ekpa was in 2016, trained by DSS and sent into IPOB as a mole.

Ekpa, a Finland-based separatist leader, since the arrest of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu in 2021, claimed leadership of the group and later styled himself as the Prime Minister of the Biafra Government in Exile.

He is alleged to be responsible for the civil disobedience orders in the southeast region and is reported to be responsible for the violence unleashed on innocent people during the sit-at-home days.

Although IPOB has constantly dissociated itself from the activities of Ekpa, the self-appointed disciple of Nnamdi Kanu, he insists his actions are to demand the speedy release of Kanu.

Powerful said: “Ekpa was prior to this period groomed by the Nigerian DSS to usurp the leadership of IPOB in 2016 but that evil plans failed woefully.

“Simon Ekpa was the same person as the faceless Okwudili that DSS created in 2016 as the new leader of IPOB when our leader was in detention in 2016. Prior to this time, Simon was a hater of Ndigbo and particularly, IPOB in Finland. IPOB members in Finland will attest to this.

“Simon Ekpa is the exclusive project of the Nigerian DSS, to create a situation of unrest and hostilities in the South East which the end product was to destroy the image of IPOB.”

The group said if it was not so, the federal government would have taken certain steps to arrest his activities in the zone.

“Why is the Nigerian government not making any effort to diplomatically engage the Finnish Government about the visible hostilities of Ekpa? Why did Nigeria suppress the Legal Investigation of Ekpa in Finland, also his court cases in Nigeria?”

The group said if the federal government was serious about ending Ekpa’s rascality in the zone, it would have ordered the DSS to allow Kanu to address his followers through his social media channels.

The group also called on its members to discountenance Ekpa while also challenging him to attempt to dish orders to IPOB members without using Kanu’s name and see that no one would listen to him.

  • Analysis: Nnamdi Kanu’s letter deepens South East sit-at-home dilemma

Analysis: Nnamdi Kanu’s letter deepens South East sit-at-home dilemma

As tensions rise in Nigeria’s South East region, the two-week sit-at-home order scheduled to commence on Monday, July 31st, has become a subject of controversy.

Last week, compliance with the order led to tragic consequences as protests erupted in Enugu, resulting in the loss of at least two lives.

The situation has been further compounded by a purported handwritten letter from incarcerated Biafran leader Nnamdi Kanu, instructing Finland-based separatist agitator Simon Ekpa to end the “infamous and reckless sit-at-home” order imposed on the region.

During plenary on Thursday, the Senate vehemently condemned the sit-at-home civil disobedience actions in the South East that have disrupted and destroyed economic activities and stepped down the call to consider a prayer for the release of Kanu on bail, as a way of curbing the situation in the region.

Addressing a motion titled: “Condemning the Disruptive Nature of ‘Sit-At-Home’ Demonstrations in the South East-Nigeria” sponsored by Senator Osita Izunaso Bonaventure (Imo West) and co-sponsored by 14 other senators from the South East, the Senate President Godswill Akpabio said “If Governors in South-East obey Sit-At-Home, it means the real Gov of South-East is Ekpa”.

The Senate further urged the Federal Government to collaborate with the Finnish government to extradite Ekpa for prosecution.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the quest for Biafra’s independence has been a long-standing struggle in Nigeria, marked by periods of unrest and tension.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group, has been at the forefront of this movement, advocating for the secession of the southeastern region from Nigeria to form an independent Biafran state. Kanu had played a key role in galvanizing support for the cause both within the country and in the diaspora.

The sit-at-home order started as a civil disobedience movement by pro-Biafra groups, calling on residents to remain at home on Mondays as a form of protest after Kanu was arrested by the Department of State Security (DSS) in June 2021.

However, over time, it evolved and gained traction, garnering widespread compliance from the people in the region, impacting business activities and resulting in deadly clashes and face-offs with security operatives.

In response to the two-week sit-at-home call, some transport companies have indicated that they may not release their buses to ply that route.

Ekpa, the self-acclaimed Prime Minister of the the Biafran Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), insists that the sit-at-home order has a five-point agenda – to pressure the Nigerian government for the immediate and unconditional release of Kanu, prepare for Biafra’s self-referendum and assert the determination of Biafrans to take control of their own future.

It also seeks to “invalidate the legitimacy of those who claim to represent Nigeria within the Biafran territory and demonstrate that the BRGIE is in charge and enjoys 99 per cent loyalty from the Biafran people,” Ekpa said.

“The sit-at-home will be executed in a phased manner, starting with a total lockdown in Biafraland from Monday, July 31 to Friday, August 4, 2023.

“During this period, all Biafran markets will remain closed. However, the sit-at-home will be temporarily suspended on Saturday, August 5, and Sunday, August 6, allowing for a two-day break where markets will reopen.

“The second phase of the sit-at-home will resume from Monday, August 7, to Friday, August 11, 2023, with another total lockdown in Biafraland. Once again, the sit-at-home will be interrupted for two days, Saturday, August 12, and Sunday, August 13, when all Biafran markets will reopen,” he added.

The Biafra agitators have called on all oil companies operating in the South East region to shut down their oil exploration activities on the designated dates.

However, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, issued a statement on Saturday, confirmed the authenticity of Kanu’s handwritten note to Ekpa calling for an end to the enforcement of the sit-at-home order and disassociating Kanu and IPOB from the “senseless” imposition.

The statement also accuses certain elements within the movement of blackmailing IPOB and Kanu through the violent enforcement of the sit-at-home order.

“When our leader called for complete peace in Biafraland and to protect our people instead of killing them in one of his court appearances, he was referring to the infiltrators to stop their infamous enforcement of sit-at-home orders and enforcement.

“Every Biafran must stop observing any sit-at-home order from the infiltrators. The reckless enforcement and abuse of sit-at-homes is an opportunity for criminals to kidnap, murder, maim, and snatch cars from innocent citizens,” IPOB’s spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Ekpa remains resolute in his commitment to the two-week sit-at-home order, which he says is “non-negotiable”.

“I will not listen to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, from DSS, from Hospital or from Nigeria. I will not talk to him on phone, on video call, on television call or internet call. I want to talk with him one on one in Finland.

“I am here to Liberate Biafra and I don’t expect political criminals to be part of the liberation. From this day 29.7.2023, I cut off all communication with anyone in Nigeria side including lawyers to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“The only communication will be when Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is released from dungeon. We are not stepping back an inch until Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is freed,” Ekpa said.

The two-week sit-at-home order has heightened tensions in the southeast region and calls for dialogue and a peaceful resolution have grown stronger.

Peter Obi speaks on taking pictures with Simon Ekpa [See photo]

Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections, Peter Obi has described as fake, a photo of him and the Finland-based pro-Biafra agitator,  Mr Simon Ekpa.

The Head of the Obi-Datti Media Office, Mr. Diran Onifade, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.

Recalled that  Expa had been allegedly responsible for calling for several sit-at-home orders in the South-East region,  which had allegedly resulted in loss of many lives and property.

Onifade said the perpetrators of the fake photo inserted Obi’s popular supporter and rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, to further claim credibility.

Peter Obi speaks on taking pictures with Simon Ekpa

He said they all grew up being educated that photos tell a thousand stories and do not tell lies as photos were usually self-evident.

According to him, yet that was long years ago and long before digital technology took the World like a storm.

Onifade said the standard narrative had changed remarkably with dubious minds always ready to deploy it’s creatively albeit negatively, to create what was non-existent.

He said: “The scenario is exactly what played out in the photoshopped picture of  Peter Obi supposedly standing with the Finland-based irritant Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa.

“This is all in a desperate move to drag Obi’s name into disrepute by linking him with the ugly story that Ekpa has become in Nigeria.

“For clarity, the picture was taken by Obi standing with an admirer on a Virgin Flight on Friday, July 21, 2023.

“In trying to authenticate their filthy and disgustingly dirty act, they inserted the picture of Aisha Yusuf behind them.

“The memory may be short to forget that Obi was the first to describe the sit-at-home thing as an act being engineered and bred by a criminal that the system has refused to squarely tackle.”

Onifade said the menace of this crime was becoming manifest even to attract the views of the nation’s parliament, it may be necessary to critically study the handling of this crime.

In a related development, he said some people had put out a loss leader advert,  purporting Peter Obi as “providing 20GB Free Data and N5000 Airtime in celebration of his 62nd Birthday.

“This is a SCAM!  Subscriber beware!!.”

Onifade said it was mind-boggling that these criminal ploys were passed off as playing politics.

He said that instead of seeking the line of a final solution to the cankerworm that had embarrassingly held the region and the country down, some mischief makers who were obsessed with Peter Obi’s rising fame were concerned with linking him to Ekpa.

According to him, yet another failed attempt to dent the political Eagle whose concern is how to create a new Nigeria and reduce the poverty in the land.

He said the reasonable thing to do if this country was sincere in tackling its economic challenges was to study the views expressed by this phenomenal political leader of contemporary Nigeria instead of trolling him endlessly.

Biafra militant leader blasts Dokubo, says he speak from both sides

Princewill Chimezie Richards, a Pro-Biafra agitation leader, has accused the former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo of speaking from both sides of his mouth.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Asari, who visited Aso Rock yesterday, had warned that the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, would cause chaos.

Princewill, whose group operates mainly around the Gulf of Guinea while reacting in a statement, accused Asari of playing double standards, adding that “he speaks from both sides of his mouth.”

“I know him, he never stands on anything, was it not a few days ago he was shouting that Senate President should go to the South East as if it’s of any importance to the people of the region. Now he has changed mouth that the South East got what they deserved.”

According to Princewill, Dokubo is on a mission to collect the pipeline contract given to Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, his rival but repentant militant leader.

“His main mission to Aso Villa is to beg for contract, and very soon Tompolo’s contract will be terminated. Let’s see if he is Tinubu’s godfather.”

IPOB speaks on printing Biafra currency, operation of government in exile

The Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) on Wednesday explained their stance on printing Biafra currency and operation of  a government in exile.

Emma Powerful, IPOB’s spokesman issued a warning to those he described as autopilot to desist from such a move.

Powerful made this known via a statement he  signed and released on Wednesday.

According to Powerful’s statement, IPOB has distanced itself from an autopilot group, declaring that the group has no faction.

Powerful also distanced IPOB from those operating Radio Biafra in the United States.

He noted that those operating under the guise of the Directorate of State are not members of IPOB.

The statement read in parts: “We the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of the great liberator Nnamdi Kanu once again reiterate that IPOB is not part of the formation of Biafra government in exile anywhere.

“The people behind the shambolic Radio Biafra government in exile in the USA are not IPOB members, and they should stop linking themselves to us.

“Those piloting government in exile in the USA are not IPOB members, and they don’t mean well for Biafra freedom and restoration.

“IPOB has no plan to print Biafra currency, stamps, and other important state documents because we are not yet a sovereign nation. If we print currencies now, where can they be used as legal tender?”

Abducted female officer not rescued yet – Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army (NA) has disclosed Lieutenant P. P. Johnson, a female officer who was abducted while visiting her grandmother in Aku-Okigwe in Imo state is yet to be rescued.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations made the disclosure in a statement on Friday.

Recall that Lieutenant P. P. Johnson was abducted by unknown gunmen on Monday 26 December 2022 shortly after completing her Cadet training and subsequent commissioning as a Lieutenant into the Nigerian Army.

A video footage of her abduction emerged on social media where her abductors claimed the abduction was in line with their fight for Biafra against the Nigerian State.

The statement reads: “It is instructive that the officer’s circumstance as a woman and a Nigerian citizen of South Eastern extraction did not dissuade her abductors from dehumanizing her in their mindless attempt to commit atrocities under the guise of fighting for Biafra.

“This evidently is another pointer to the myriads of crimes being unleashed by IPOB/ ESN on Ndigbo, the very people they claim to be fighting for their emancipation.

“It should therefore be crystal clear to those who are still in doubt of the true status of these groups, that IPOB/ESN are terrorists, masquerading as freedom fighters and do not deserve the support of anyone particularly the good people of South East Nigeria.

“The NA wishes to state that the information making the rounds is unsubstantiated as the officer is yet to be released or rescued from her abductors.

“Likewise, the video footage being circulated and associated with the rescue claim is an old video of the arrest of a suspect earlier effected by troops.

“Much as we appreciate the concern and goodwill of the general public for her safe rescue, we also wish to note that the information on the rescue of the officer did not emanate from the NA.

“The Nigerian Army will leave no stone unturned in its effort to rescue the officer and bring the perpetrators to book. We appeal to the general public to provide credible and reliable information that could lead to her safe rescue and arrest of the perpetrators”.

  • Supreme Court to determine Nnamdi Kanu’s fate- FG

Supreme Court to determine Nnamdi Kanu’s fate- FG

In a bid to continuously detain the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. the Federal Government has filed seven grounds of appeal against the October 13 Court of Appeal judgment which discharged him.

It asked the Supreme Court to set aside the judgment and restore the charge against the respondent to be tried at the trial court.

The government, in a motion on notice in support of the appeal, is also seeking a stay of execution of the judgment of the court presided over by Justice Jummai Sankey, pending the hearing and final determination of its appeal, noting that the IPOB leader posed a flight risk.

The notice of appeal dated October 18 was signed by the Director, Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mohammed Abubakar, Assistant Chief State Counsel, D. Kaswe and A. Aluko and Senior State Counsel, G. Nweze, Department of Public Prosecution, Federal Ministry of Justice.

The appellant averred that the appellate court erred in law when it held that the trial court had no jurisdiction to try Kanu because of “the extraordinary rendition of the respondent.”

It stated, “There was no evidence led by the respondent before the court of the first instance and indeed before the court below to show how he was allegedly abducted and rendered to Nigeria as required by Section 139 of the Evidence Act, 2011 since he alleged that he was abducted without following due process of law.”

The appeal court misdirected itself when it relied heavily on the Organisation of African Unions Conventions on the Prevention and Combating of Terrorism, the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights and cases decided from foreign jurisdictions as against the substantive law covering the criminal procedure in Nigeria

The appellant also contended that the court below erred when it held that the executive arm must not be allowed to benefit from the abduction of the respondent “when in fact and by its judgment, the respondent was allowed to benefit from his illegality of disobeying the orders of the court when he jumped bail and was rewarded with a discharge from the charges pending against him at the trial court thereby occasioning a miscarriage of justice against the state and the victims of the crimes perpetrated by the respondent.”

The government claimed that the appeal court was wrong by saying that how Kanu was brought back to the country can vitiate and indeed weaken the criminal charges of treason, treasonable felony and terrorism brought against him.

It added that the lower court made that decision without taking into account the fact that the nature of the “entry’’ of the respondent is not relevant in the determination of the charges against him.

The appellant further stated that the appeal court justices failed to be bound by established judicial precedent on the mode of “entry” of a defendant charged with the commission of an offence established by the Supreme Court.

The appeal court, the FG noted, misdirected itself when it relied heavily on the Organisation of African Unions Conventions on the Prevention and Combating of Terrorism, the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights and cases decided from foreign jurisdictions as against the substantive law covering the criminal procedure in Nigeria.

“The court below overlooked the submissions of the appellant with regards to the ACJA, 2015 which takes its taproot from the grundnorm Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) to the effect that it is the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 that governs the trial of every Nigerian charged with the commission of a crime, this failure occasioned the miscarriage of justice,’’ the appeal notice read.

The FG further argued that the court below erred in law when it discharged the respondent of the offences mentioned in counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 bordering on terrorism offences contained in the amended charge dated January 14, 2022, and retained by the trial court for want of jurisdiction.

The appeal observed that the appellate court was completely silent and closed its eyes to the obvious fact of the issues which predate the rendition of the respondent because he was standing trial for conspiracy, and treasonable felony terrorism before his escape.

“If the learned Justices of the Court of Appeal had taken into consideration the act of illegality of the respondent in jumping bail and the corresponding duty of the appellant to ensure his presence in court, the decision of the court would have been different,’’ the appeal read.

In an affidavit, Loveme Odubo of the Department of Public Prosecution, Federal Ministry of Justice, stated that Kanu has a history of jumping bail and may be difficult to secure if the appeal was not granted.

The affidavit read, “That the respondent is a flight risk person given his previous antecedent of jumping bail while standing trial.

“The respondent is a dual citizen of both Nigeria and Britain which will make it easy for him to move out of Nigeria and escape justice. That the respondent’s presence will be difficult to secure should the judgment of the court below is not overturned and set aside by the Supreme Court.

“There is a need to stay the execution of the judgment of this honourable court to avoid a situation where the judgment of the Supreme Court will be overreached and rendered nugatory.’’

Obey Court of Appeal ruling- Senate S’East Caucus
Meanwhile, the South East Caucus in the Senate has intervened in the case of the Federal Government against Kanu, urging that the ruling by the Court of Appeal be obeyed.

In a statement jointly signed by 14 South-East Senators on Thursday, they advised the government against appealing the ruling at the Supreme Court but rather asked the Presidency to utilise the opportunity presented by the Appeal Court ruling and consider a political solution to solve the lingering problem in the interest of the country’s unity and peaceful coexistence of Nigerians.

The statement said, “This is the time to show magnanimity and statesmanship. The Appeal Court has provided the leeway for the authorities to walk the talk as ones desirous of preserving Nigeria’s unity and respect for her diversity.

“Accordingly, we as a Caucus and stakeholders in the Nigeria project, appeal to Mr President, to remember the promise he made to a delegation of elders of Igboland sometime ago and release Nnamdi Kanu.”
