  • NBC urged to regulate upcoming Big Brother Naija programme

NBC urged to regulate upcoming Big Brother Naija programme

Some Non-Governmental Organisations have called on the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to regulate the upcoming Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) Season Seven, a popular reality television programme, to become smoke-free.

The Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) and Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids gave the advice on Wednesday at a news conference in Abuja.

The Programme Officer of NTCA, Mr Chibuike Nwokorie, recalled that in 2021, the sixth edition of the BBNaija programme sparked public outrage when its participants flagrantly smoked on live television.

Nwokorie said that this violated the provisions of the National Tobacco Control (NTC) Act, 2015 on on-screen smoking.

He added that it also threatened the gains made on the ban on Tobacco Advertising, Promotion and Sponsorship (TAPS) in the country.

The programme officer said when it happened, the tobacco control community called on the NBC to act immediately.

“This year, as the programme is about to begin its seventh season, we are drawing the attention of the NBC to proactively engage the organisers of the show to ensure that there is no repeat of last year’s violations.

“We wish to make it clear that should there be reluctance on the part of the regulators or the organisers to ensure a smoke free programme, we will explore every available option in the interest of public health,’’ he said.

According to him, entertainment products set the agenda for many young people because they are the eyes through which they see the world.

“We also call on the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON) to caution its members from flouting tobacco control laws and ensure that they abide by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria including the NTC Act.

“We sound a note of caution to the organisers of BBN and a reminder of their responsibility towards the Nigerian population – At this time when Nigerians are hungry for quality leadership.’’

Nwokorie said that a programme with such national reach must be used to portray high standing role models for the Nigerian people.

“At this critical time of our nationhood journey, we cannot afford to have entertainment for mere entertainment sake, and young and impressionable Nigerians must not be manipulated into thinking that smoking is good.

“The National Film and Video Sensors Board (NFVCB) must live up to its responsibility of ensuring that all videos made and consumed in Nigeria strictly abide by the provisions of the NTC Act.

“This applies to the regulation of on-screen smoking and must see to the inclusion of text warnings or outright removal of needless on-screen smoking depictions,’’ Nwokorie said.

Mr Michael Olaniyan, the Technical Resource Officer, West Africa Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, urged the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to monitor and sanction violators of the TAPS ban in the digital space.

Olaniyan urged government’s agencies to enforce the NTC Act and its Regulations to work together and ensure that the ban on direct and indirect TAPS is comprehensively implemented in the country.

According to him, these should be done in line with Article 13 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

He said that NBC should exercise its mandate to ensure that BBN does not flout any provision of the NTC Act and enforce the law particularly penalties as listed in the law.

Olaniyan said the penalties ranged from N500,000 to N5 million option of fine and from six months to five years imprisonment depending on the gravities of the violations.

The seventh edition of the Big Brother Naija is set to hit the screen from July 23.

  • BBNaija returns with a bang, grand prize raised to N100m

This was disclosed by Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and West Africa Channels, Multichoice, at a news conference on Tuesday in Lagos.

According to Tejumola, the show is a much-anticipated one as the winner will go home with a grand prize of N100 million.

She explained that the winner would have a N50 million cash prize and N50 million worth of other prizes from the sponsors of the show.

She disclosed that the headline sponsor of the show was Pocket by Piggyvest while the associate sponsor remained Flutterwave.

“Yes, the Big Brother Naija season 7 is here, with a double launch from Saturday, July 23 to Sunday 24 on Africa Magic Urban, Showcase and Family.

“This can be viewed on DSTV channel 198 and Go tv channel 29 from 7pm.

“This is expected to run for 72 days, which is 10 weeks, there will be live eviction shows every Sunday as the show runs.

“The theme for the show is “Only Way is Up”,” she said.

Tejumola said that in view of the fact that Nigeria had started recording minimal cases of COVID-19 pandemic, the show would witness some level of individual engagement.

She said that the live shows would engage the audience unlike what was obtainable in the last two editions of the show.

She said this year’s season of the show would witness a return of a few pre-COVID-19 elements including the fan-favourite ‘Ninjas’ and a live studio audience.

“Fans can also expect a line-up of more engaging tasks, unpredictable twists and Big Brother’s wit.

“The show will also retain its voting style from last year, voting will only be on the Big Brother Naija website, mobile site, and the MyDStv and MyGOtv apps for active customers,” she said.

Tejumola said that the show would be an exceptional and unpredictable one as all speculations before the commencement of the show were wrong.

BBNaija: Housemates call for Maria’s head after food brawl

Housemates of Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) Season 6 on Thursday called for the head of their fellow housemate, Maria.

The BBNaija Shine Ya Eye housemates accused Maria of violence, a punishable offense in the BBNaija house.

The accusation followed a brawl over food, which started after the Head of House (HoH), Boma challenged Maria for throwing food on him.

Maria had furiously thrown her food into the sink at the same time Boma was washing his cutleries at the sink and some food substance splashed on him.

It all began when the housemates were talking about their tainted toilet during lunchtime on Thursday, day 12 of the show.

While they all ate, Angel talked about a stain on the toilet, stating that she tried cleaning it but it refused to go off.

According to her, the stain is from the chemical they used in washing the toilet but Niyi insisted that it was a poop stain.

As they all discussed, Maria got irritated, stood up from the table, tossed her food in the sink, and walked out from the lounge into the room.

Particles of the food splashed on Boma, who was washing his cutlery at the sink. He tried telling her but she had already left the lounge.

Peace could be heard saying, “Maria, that’s rude, do you understand? That’s very very rude.”

Boma then approached Maria in the room concerning her actions. He told her that she just walked away even as he tried to call her back.

“I didn’t mean to do that. I’m so sorry, I wasn’t looking,” Maria said.

While discussing the issue with Nini and Arin, Boma said Maria’s act was a sign of violence because she threw the food at him.

Then Arin said Maria threw some of the food and her drink on the floor as well.

She has lost my respect – White Money

Meanwhile, White Money who has been the self-proclaimed resident chef in the House also didn’t take Maria’s behaviour well and was heard saying that she has completely lost his respect.

This situation comes a week after the previous HoH, Peace confronted the Housemates for wasting food.

“This girl don lose my respect finally. Like, I don already dey dread her, but now, like good morning, good morning, f!ck out.

“We are in a task together, we win, f!ck out, we lose, f!ck out. No, no, no, she lost my respect. I don’t care menh!

“Even Pere is not in support of what she did. Pere is not in support of what she did. That is f!cked up mehn.

“I literally wrap my head around what we will eat. It’s not as if everybody can’t cook but you guys could hear the complaints; people are being underfed, then when somebody tries to make sure there is food for everybody, you go and waste it,” White Money said.

TNG reports food has been a major topic of discussion in the House, and more so now that the Shine Ya Eye Housemates collectively buy and share groceries.

Will they find a way to share without qualms?
