Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state will today bow out of the government house while Governor-elect, Biodun Oyebanji, will  be inaugurated as the governor of the state for a term of four years.

The June 18  governorship election, which was described as a three-horse race saw Biodun Oyebanji of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) poll 187, 057 votes; Segun Oni of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) poll 82, 211 and Bisi Kolawole of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) poll 67,457.

Meanwhile,  Fayemi has set up a 46-member committee to coordinate activities marking the end of his tenure as well as the inauguration ceremony for the incoming administration of Hon. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji.

According to a statement by Yinka Oyebode, Chief Press Secretary to the Ekiti Governor, the committee is to be led by the State First Lady, Erelu Bisi Fayemi as Chairperson, while Wife of the Governor-elect, Dr (Mrs) Olayemi Oyebanji is Co-Chairperson. Mr Seun Odewale, Director General, Bureau of Public Procurement, will serve as Secretary to the committee.

Similarly, Fayemi,  has assured the residents that dilapidated federal roads in the state will be given attention to bring relief to the users and complement the Ekiti State Agro-Allied Passenger International Airport.

The airport along Ijan-Ado Road in the state capital marked the last project inaugurated for use by his administration.

Speaking on Saturday at the inauguration of the airport, the governor said he, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Adeniyi Adebayo; and the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, had been making representations to the Federal Government on the state of federal roads in Ekiti.

Fayemi, who expressed satisfaction with the success of the project 10 years after its conception during his first administration in 2012, especially on the last day of his administration, said, “Upon my assumption of office in 2018, I appointed aviation experts and industry-related officials to kickstart the implementation of the project. They made several visits to communities in order to meet the requirements for the establishment of the airport.

“As a government that adheres strictly to the rule of law with unwavering respect for the rights of our people, we made several appeals to communities affected for enumeration of their farmlands to ensure commensurate monetary compensation is paid on their crops. To this end, a total of 669 claimants were duly compensated out of those that presented themselves for the exercise. We acquired 4,017 hectares of land from nine communities: Ago Aduloju, Aso Ayegunle, Bolorunduro, Igbogun, Araromi, Obbo, Afao, Orun, Igbemo, and Ijan, covering three local government areas in the state. My job is done, Ekiti Kete.”

The roads leading to the venue of the event and other adjoining streets within the precinct of the Ekiti patapo pavilion are under heavy security while Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and vans were stationed in front of the venue.

Scores of security personnel, comprising the men of the Police, Army, Department of State Security and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were sighted manning strategic positions around the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion, the venue of the event.

The memo reads in part: “A Transition Committee was constituted to among others, evolve strategies for a smooth transition from the incumbent to the incoming government.

  • Ekiti Election: Allegation of vote buying raised by elements who lost – Adamu

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Abdulahi Adamu, has dismissed the allegation of vote-buying leveled against the party during the Saturday’s Gubernatorial election in Ekiti.

Newsmen reports that the APC candidate, Biodun Oyebanji, polled 187, 057 votes to win the election.

Adamu, who addressed State House correspondents after he officially presented the Governor-elect (Oyebanji) to President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday in Abuja, said the allegation of vote buying was raised by elements who lost the election.

The party chairman called on the media to always avoid being used by aggrieved politicians who were bent on destroying the image of the country for political gains.

He said: “As a patriotic Nigerian that is privileged to lead the ruling party in this country today, I want to only appeal to the media.

“Please, don’t partake in portraying negative attitudes in our processes. If you do so, you are compromising. I’m sorry to say so. You’re compromising the integrity of our process as a country.

“I would have preferred if the person who asked that question saying, “Look, in America, this is what they do in a democracy in respect to the subject matter. In the United Kingdom or France this is what they do. This is what you are doing differently.’

“And please let us not be too much in the space of speculation.

“I have noticed that over the last maybe four or five general elections in this country, this issue of vote buying has taken a center stage. One can only evidence what he saw what he did and I’m sure his Excellency the governor-elect, responded in very good faith.

“Some of you, asking this particular question did not go Ekiti. You were not there.

“Somebody who is losing the election flied a kite. ‘Oh no, they are buying votes and all the kind of money they have we don’t have, that’s why I’m losing,’ and you are helping to market that opinion.

“I’m only appealing to you as a fellow Nigerian and somebody who has been in this your trade before today. Please, let us help build this country positively.”

On the perceived dangers of APC “space holder” for the presidential running mate of the ruling party not relinquishing the post, he said there was nothing to be worried about.

Adamu said: “Thank you very much. We are not in the speculative world. We are governed by the laws of the land.

“There’s nothing our presidential candidate has done with regards to returning his forms that is not within the confines of the law of the land.

“Everything we’ve done so far we have done very carefully with legal consultation and we are cocksure, we’re not going to have the kind of speculation that you are professing at this point in time.

“We’re very comfortable with what we have done. It is still pessimism. However, we are not in that school of thought yet. We don’t have to be there”, he said.

Also responding to the question of alleged vote buying, the winner of last Saturday’s Ekiti State governorship election, Oyebanji, said neither himself, nor the ruling APC was involved in the alleged vote buying during the polls.

Oyebanji said his victory was as a result of the works done by the APC-led administration in the state, coupled with the fact that he campaigned effectively and presented a reasonable manifesto to the people of the state.

“You said that it was an allegation. Well, where I voted, I did not witness anything like that, but people are entitled to their opinion, but not to their facts.

“I will speak for myself. I canvassed for votes, I had a manifesto that I unveiled to Ekiti people and I canvassed based on that manifesto.

“I’m part of a government that has done so well. The last time I was here, I said that if performance will be an indicator for electoral success that we have nothing to fear.

“So, as far as we are concerned in APC we did not involve in vote buying, but we’ve done so well and we have a manifesto that pleases our people,” he said.

The governor-elect was led to the Villa by a team of party leaders, including Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Governor of Ekiti, Kayode Fayemi; Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) and Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu.

Others were governor of Jigawa, Mohammed Badaru; and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, who was also governor of Ekiti State, between 1999 and 2003.

“Please take urgent actions aimed at redressing the plights of our people when you fully assume the mantle shortly.

  • Ekiti: Buhari congratulates Oyebanji, says victory well deserved

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Biodun Oyebanji, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), over his electoral victory in Saturday’s Ekiti State gubernatorial election, describing the victory as well deserved.

The president, in a congratulatory message issued by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, on Sunday in Abuja,

He urged Oyebanji to be magnanimous in victory in the interest of the people of the state.

Buhari also rejoiced with the APC Chairman, Sen. Abdulahi Adamu, and the National Working Committee for the victory, the first under the tenure of the newly elected executives of the party.

“This is a good beginning for you and your team. The APC is getting stronger and more united.

”The victory of our party in Ekiti is an indication of the confidence of Nigerians in the ability of our great party to deliver quality governance to all,” said the president.

He charged all APC members across and outside the country to see this as a good omen for the 2023 general elections and work assiduously to ensure the party’s victory, continuing the trend with Osun State next month in July.

The president also felicitated the people of Ekiti for the smooth conduct of the election, affirming that they were the real victors as they had been able to freely choose their leader for the next four years.

Besides, he lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the law enforcement agencies for the preparations put in place, urging them to keep the momentum for upcoming elections.

  • BREAKING NEWS: APC wins Ekiti governorship election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has retained the governorship seat of Ekiti State, winning in 15 out of the 16 Local Government Areas with 187,057 votes.

The party’s supporters leaped in jubilation in the early hours of Sunday when the results of Saturday’s governorship election showed Biodun Oyebanji defeated 15 other candidates.

Segun Oni of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) scored 82,211 votes while the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bisi Kolawole, scored 67,457 votes.

Kolawole won in his Efon Local Government Area where he scored 6,303 to beat APC’s 4,012 and SDP’s 339 votes.

Residents of the State Capital, Ado – Ekiti, trooped to the streets to celebrate the victory in the dead of the night.

At the Government House in the Oke Ayoba area of the town, other APC governors, led by the state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, monitored the exercise.

In Ikogosi-Ekiti, Ekiti West Local Government Area, where Oyebanji hails from, residents also began celebrating the victory of their kinsman at the poll.

Also in Ikere-Ekiti, where Oyebanji’s running mate, Mrs Monitade Afuye, hails from, residents also began celebration as the results were announced by the respective local government Returning Officers.

In different parts of the state also, some members of the ruling party celebrated the victory, describing it as well-deserved.

Our correspondents observed that prior to the announcement of the results at the collation centre, all the results from the 16 local government areas had been uploaded on the Result Viewing Portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission, known as IReV.

However, there were isolated cases of violence in some polling units.

For example, in Ekiti South-West Local Government Area, the APC scored 9,679 votes ahead of SDP’s 4,577 and PDP’s 4,474 votes.

The Returning Officer for the LGA, Prof Gbolagade Jonathan, reported that there was violence in Units 5 and 7, where he said some hoodlums from nowhere carted away the ballot boxes, after firing gunshots.

Also, in Ikere LGA, the APC also won with 12,086 votes against the PDP and SDP, which scored 3,789 and 1943 respectively. The Returning Officer, Prof Emmanuel Ajava, announced that votes in Unit 2 of the LGA were cancelled due to violence.

Although the governorship election held across the 16 Local Government Areas and was relatively peaceful, incidents of vote-buying characterised the poll.

Candidates and agents of some political parties also alleged inducement of voters to deprive them of the opportunity of making their free choices.

It was gathered that some party agents were arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over alleged vote-buying at a polling station at Ola Oluwa Grammar School, Ado Ekiti during the election.

A source, who spoke on the development, said the suspects were apprehended with a bag of cash allegedly being used to induce voters.

“One of the suspects, who claimed to be a party agent, was arrested and has been taken into custody,” the source said.

    Reactions:

    Allegations of vote-buying

The Social Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Chief Segun Oni, who voted at Ward 2, Unit 6 in Ifaki-Ekiti his home town, complained of vote-buying in Ado Ekiti and Oye Ekiti.

Oni, who described vote-buying as a violation of the Electoral Act, said, “I have been told that selling and buying of votes are going on in Ado and Oye. This is not allowed by the law. I want security agents to move in and stop those doing that.”

Also, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Dr Wole Oluyede, who voted at Igele Arokun Ward 3, Unit 6, Ikere Ekiti, said there was brazen vote-buying in the community allegedly perpetrated by agents of the All Progressives Congress.

Oluyede said, “The election today (Saturday) shows that we are not ready for democracy. The unfortunate thing is that those who took money do not want people to exercise their right to choose.

“Whatever is the outcome of the election does not reflect good governance and the wishes of the people. It does not reflect a good election. I wish Nigeria will be a better place for all of us.”

Similarly, the candidate of Action Democratic Party, Mrs Kemi Elebute-Halle, who voted at Unit 8, Ward 10, Odo Ayedun in Ikole LGA, lamented vote inducement, which she said did not make the election credible.

Elebute-Halle alleged, “In my polling unit, the APC gave N10, 000, the PDP gave N5, 000 while SDP gave N3, 000 per vote as inducement. The world is watching.”

The candidate, however, urged people to vote for a credible candidate, saying, “I want to rely on the commitment of our people to democracy. Irrespective of vote-buying, they would vote for me as their choice.”

Also, agents of the ADC and SDP at Ward 2 Unit 8, Iworoko, Ifelofun/Irepodun LGA of the state, alleged that a particular political party engaged in vote-buying.

The SDP agent, Bukunmi Oluwafemi, said the exercise was peaceful, observing that a party was involved in ‘see and buy,’ saying, “The voting went on well. People came out to vote. There is a party that is trying to do ‘see and buy’ but we have cautioned them.”

The ADC candidate, Yusuf Kehinde, who corroborated him, alleged that some people asked voters to reveal the party they voted for and collect money, saying, “They (voters) are showing their ballot papers to agents of a party and we said that shouldn’t be. A particular party is buying votes.”

But an APC agent, Muyideen Fatayo, who countered SDP and ADC agents, said, “There was no problem. Everything went well.”

His claim was also corroborated by the PDP agent in the ward, Matthew Fapohunda, who said the election was held without any hitch.

However, it was drama at Ward 10 Unit 9, Ilupeju along Ikere–Ado Expressway in Ikere Ekiti, Ikere LGA, as some officers of the state command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps allegedly stormed the polling unit and took away huge sum of money from some politicians.

A voter in the unit, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the undisclosed amount of money hijacked by the security men was meant for vote-buying in the area.

“They (NSCDC officers) stormed this unit and harassed the person holding the money. They collected the money from him and took it away. We who voted for APC and waited to collect our money could not get the money. It is disappointing. We were told that the money is over N2m,” the source said.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Funminiyi Afuye, who voted at Are/Araromi/Ayetoro Ward, Unit 009 Ikere Ekiti, said the vote-buying money allegedly seized by security agents was not from his party, APC, saying, “I am not aware of that. And if they seized money, it was not seized from my party.”

The APC candidate, Oyebanji, also denied reports that he wooed voters with money in his hometown.

Oyebanji, in a statement by his media aide, Raheem Akingbolu, titled, ‘Oyebanji didn’t give money to any voter,’ said, “Contrary to the malicious report, neither Oyebanji, nor any of his supporters gave money to anybody at any polling unit in Ikogosi. Aside from being Oyebanji’s town, the candidate enjoys overwhelming support in the community with optimism of recording a 100 per cent result.”

    Disagreement among parties

Also, the ADC candidate, Oluyede, who alleged that there was no election in Ekiti on Saturday, said there was not anything fair or good about it.

He said, “In my polling booth, they didn’t start elections until 10am. It was after that the polling officer said that they didn’t have a stamp to complete the process. They brought out of a bag by 10am and it was evident that they were trying to make people get into fracas with one another. We maintained decorum. We didn’t fight but I don’t think anybody trusted anything after. About the security in town, everybody that was arrested today as far as I know was my person.’’

However, the PDP candidate, Bisi Kolawole, who voted at Ward 08, Unit 01, said, “The process has been peaceful. We just hope there won’t be manipulation.’’

Also, the APC candidate who voted at Okelele Ward 06, Unit 003, Ikogosi Ekiti, in Ekiti West LGA, lauded the process, saying, “This is an improvement. I am happy that there was no case of apathy. The security build up has also been impressive. The process has been good and fine.”

Both Oyebanji and Kolawole lauded the INEC and the Bimodal Voter Authentication System technology used, saying it was a great improvement.

In the same vein, a PDP chieftain and former deputy governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, who voted at Ward 2,Unit 7, Okeruku, Ikere Ekiti, hailed the process, saying, “There was no hitch and the process was without any form of harassment in any part of the town.’’

    CSOs fault election

However, an election monitoring group, Yiaga Africa, which confirmed voter inducement and bribery through its observations, added, “Secrecy of the ballot was compromised as people could see how voters marked the ballots in Igede Ward II 13-13-06-014 in Irepodun/Ifelodun LGA.

Yiaga Africa Executive Director, Samson Itodo, said, “Party agents for the APC, PDP and SDP clustered around the voting cubicle and saw how voters marked their ballot papers. Yiaga Africa also received reports of missing names of registered voters on the BVAS. The voters were prevented from voting despite holding INEC issued PVCs.”

Also, the Nigerian Civil Societies Situation Room’s co-convener, James Ugochukwu, said though security officials arrived the polling units on time and were civil in their conduct, “the impact of their presence was not felt in voters’ coordination at most of the polling units. Also, the police failed to halt the apparent vote-buying witnessed by observers in virtually all the polling units.”

Ugochukwu said, “We wish to remind the police authorities of their responsibilities to halt and apprehend those involved in voters’ inducement and maintain law and order throughout the process and beyond.’’

NYSC hails exercise The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Muhammad Fadah, expressed delight at the adequate security provided for corps members working as INEC adhoc staff across polling units in the 16 council areas of the state.

Fadah, who spoke in Ado Ekiti while monitoring the safety of corps members on election duty, said the election was peaceful, adding that, “The corps members in the various polling units are safe. I went round to see my corps members. They are all safe and the election calm.’’

    Withdrawal rumours everywhere

Some parties denied reports of their candidates’ withdrawal from the race, describing the reports as fake.

The SDP candidate, Oni, and his ADP counterpart, Elebute-Halle, were rumoured to have withdrawn from the race to support particular candidates.

But the Segun Oni Campaign Organisation described the reports as outright false.

The SOCO Director of Media, Jackson Adebayo, who said Oni’s signature in the letter conveying the withdrawal was forged, added, “We want to say categorically that the release is complete falsehood and forgery which the APC is known for. The fear of the APC from the beginning has been that should Segun Oni participate in this election, their candidate will be disgracefully voted against, hence they resorted to falsehood and forgery.”

Also, the ADP governorship candidate, Elebute-Halle, on Saturday denied stepping down from the race. Elebute-Halle, who said she was set to win the election, debunked the news that she stepped down from the contest, saying, “It is a lie concocted by those afraid of my rising profile. Having come this far, it would be cowardly of me to back out.”

    Police arrest four

The state police command arrested about four persons over disruption of electoral process in some polling units in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

The state police spokesperson, Mr Sunday Abutu, who confirmed the development, said the suspects were in the command’s custody.

    We’ll sue INEC’

Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has urged INEC to ensure the prosecution of politicians and other party agents arrested by security agents for alleged vote-buying during the exercise.

The group stated this in a post on its verified Twitter page, @SERAPNigeria, on Saturday. It stated that the commission risked a lawsuit if it failed to prosecute the suspects.

Operatives of the EFCC and men of the Nigeria Police Force were reported to have arrested persons suspected to be engaging in vote-buying during the election.

Some of the suspects were paraded at the Oke Ori Omi Divisional Headquarters of the Force. The suspects were reported to have been caught with monies allegedly used for vote-buying.

SERAP wrote, “#EkitiDecides2022: We’re suing to compel INEC to prosecute anyone suspected to be responsible for vote-buying and electoral bribery in Ekiti State and the politicians who sent them.”

    Fayemi, monarch happy

The state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi said that the BVAS saved time and aided a large turnout of voters.

Fayemi made the remarks after casting his vote at Ogilolo Unit 009 Ward 11 in Isan-Ekiti, Oye council area. The governor, who voted around 9:15 am, said the process was seamless and a clear departure from the old system where accreditation of voters exceeded actual voting.

He said, “My PVC was still recognised through BVAS and this is the same PVC I have been using since the beginning of this process.’’

Besides, the Onisan of Isan-Ekiti, Oba Gabriel Adejuwon, who is also Chairman, Ekiti State Traditional Council, described the voter turnout as unprecedented and encouraging.

Adejuwon said that the traditional council’s sensitisation and enlightenment prior to the election was yielding the desired results.

Ekiti election: No results submitted on INEC results portal yet

No results have been submitted on the results portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the ongoing Ekiti State Governorship Election yet, a check has shown.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG), however, reports voting has been concluded in some polling units in the ongoing Ekiti election and the sorting of results has commenced.

So far, according to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the INEC, the governorship election has largely remained peaceful with a large voter turnout.

Speaking during a visit to the Resident Electoral Commissioner ( REC) in the state, Mr Teller Adeniran, shortly monitoring the exercise, the acting Deputy Commandant-General (DCG) of NSCDC, Mr Haruna Muhammad, said that voter turnout was impressive and had been without any chaos.

“This is a sign that people are enthusiastic to vote. We have received reports from other local government areas and it has been positive, as voting is going on simultaneously,” he said.

Muhammad said that the corps would continue to work closely with INEC and other sister agencies to ensure a hitch-free election process.

“The election is more like an isolated one. So, we don’t want to give room for violence,” he said.

Muhammad said that the corps had deployed intelligence officers to possible flash points for effective intelligence gathering.

“We are prepared to protect national assets and we have reserved personnel in case of any emergency.

“When the poll closes, the men on ground are to be used throughout the night, while those working now will rest and be redeployed to their positions,” he said.

Responding, Adeniran said that INEC officials were deployed in real time, while polling booths opened early.

“The major aim and determination of the commission are to have an open poll.

“We had created new units and migrated some names from some polling units. They had their names pasted and they had been informed,” he said.

Adeniran said that this was to reduce high number of voters in certain polling units.

He advised security agencies to be more proactive in tackling security challenges, especially in case of any emergency.

The REC appreciated the corps, alongside other security agencies, for diligently securing the electoral process.

APC candidate, Oyebanji, boasts of winning Ekiti election

Meanwhile, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Ekiti has expressed optimism that he would win the election.

Oyebanji made the assertions on Saturday after casting his vote, along with his wife, Olayemi, at the Ward 6, Unit 3, Okelele in Ikogosi-Ekiti.

Ekiti Polls : 86% INEC officials arrived polling units early – CDD

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) said its data from election observation from Ekiti indicated that 86 per cent of the National Electoral Commission (INEC)  officials arrived at their polling units by 8:30am.

Prof. Adele Jinadu, Chair, Centre for Democracy and Development , Election Analysis Centre (CDD-EAC), made this known in the centre’s  preliminary statement on the conduct of the ongoing Ekiti Governorship Election.

Jinadu said that the centre had been  closely observing the election after  CDD-EAC deployed 205 trained and accredited observers to the field for data collection.

According to him, the CDD-EAC observation of the election has the objective of ascertaining if the election is free, fair, credible and reflects the supremacy of the vote of the Ekiti electorate.

He added that the CDD-EAC  also set up a fake news hub aimed at tracking and fact-checking misinformation and disinformation capable of undermining the credibility of the election.

He said that, “Reports from CDD field observers indicate that the general atmosphere in which the election is being conducted has been peaceful.

”Voting has largely proceeded smoothly without any reported incidents of violence or disruption of the process.

“The Electronic Observer Platform further showed that 74 per cent of INEC poll officials addressed voters before the 8:30am official time of poll opening.

“CDD-EAC observers also reported a significant increase in the number of female INEC officials, with the data showing that eight polling units had poll officials who were exclusively female.”

Jinadu said that the  CDD-EAC data further showed that while four polling units had no female at all; all the others had both male and female INEC officials present.

He said that  CDD-EAC data indicated that in at least 83 per cent of polling units; critical election materials like ballot papers, BVAS devices, results sheets, ballot boxes and the voter register were available.

He said that in most of the polling units, CDD-EAC observers did not see or report any form of campaigning; however, in 11.3 per cent of polling units campaigns and display of campaign materials was reported.

He said that the data showed that  all polling units reported the presence of at least one party agent. However in Polling Unit 003, Ward 06 in Ekiti West LGA, only one party had an agent.

Jinadu said that CDD-EAC data showed that in all 168 Polling Units, BVAS was available; however in polling unit 010 Ward 10, in Irepodun Ifelodun LGA, there was no BVAS at the time when poll was expected to commence.

He added that  the CDD-EAC Fake News Hub tracked and fact-checked a number of fake news and misinformation trending on election day.
