JIBADE FASINA-THOMAS: ‘Offbeat Sam, the man with many lives, still alive and hilarious @ 90

    By Jibade Fasina-Thomas

I spoke to Sam yesterday. It was the eve of his birthday and I wanted to be sure the man was still around and kicking.

And to the disappointment of those who thought otherwise, he was…and sounded ever so cheerful.

“Jabso, you still dey?,” the familiar slender voice came through with a chuckle. I knew he was bracing up for more onslaught.

“Donald Trump has not kicked you out?,” he fired a salvo, reeling with loud laughter.

“I’m still very much around, Sam. Trump has no hold on me….,” I was saying under my breath, trying to suppress some protesting hiccups. He busted my blocks and forced me into the defence. He fired on: “You know, Donald Trump respects nobody. Ask Elon Musk..”

The conversation switched to his wellbeing. He was good. I reminded him of the man who, when commended for his good looks, sighed and answered: “You’re looking at the body; you’ve not asked after the engine.” I got him into a fit of laughter. “Jibade, the engine and the body don’t mean much when you’re 90. What we used to do all night, we now stare at it all day.”

More trouble as he delved into morbid matters. “So when are you leaving?” he asked unkindly. If you know him as well as I do, the import of that question would be clearly understood. “Leave for where?” I charged back, adding, “I’m waiting for you to leave first.” The old man replied: “It’s not by age…” I cut in: “I know; but I’ve been waiting for you to board the plane first.” My wife, who is also familiar with his biting humor, quipped: “Uncle Sam, it’s turn by turn according to age, now.” He laughed hilariously, unfazed by morbid thoughts. Old age has not mellowed the humor merchant.

The man I met at the defunct Daily Times at Kakawa Street, Lagos in 1961 is still as witty and as humane as he was in those terrific days he first wrote the OFFBEAT SAM column which eventually morphed into the SAD SAM column.

My friend. My senior colleague. My boss, who shunned any honorific status in his impecunious days, @ now wears a new garb of honor: he is hereinafter to be known and addressed as:
Chief Samson Oruru Amuka-Pemu, FNGE; Comander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

For a man who does not like being put on a pedestal, I cant wait to see how ‘Chief Sam Amuka-Pemu, CON’ will fly.

Congratulations, Uncle Sam, may God keep you till you hit the century mark. 🙏🏿🍷

    We love you.

A special one for Uncle Sam by: *Ajibade Fasina-thomas*

  • Followers, not leaders are Nigeria’s problem – Amaechi

Followers, not leaders are Nigeria’s problem – Amaechi

Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has said that Nigerian leaders and elites are not the country’s problem; rather, the problem lies with the followers.

Amaechi made the remarks at a public lecture themed “Weaponisation of Poverty as a Means of Underdevelopment: A Case Study of Nigeria,” held to commemorate his 60th birthday in Abuja on Saturday.

The former governor and ex-minister also blamed followers for not being proactive in holding their leaders accountable, which had allowed leaders to keep the people impoverished.

“Nigerian leaders and elites are not the problem of Nigeria; the problem of Nigeria is the followers.

“We say Nigeria is a capitalist country, but capitalists are those who invest in production.

“However, Nigeria does not produce anything; we just want to feast on the revenue gotten from crude oil.

He urged governments at all levels to create a viable environment for a productive economy instead of relying solely on revenue from oil.

Amaechi further said he was more concerned about advancing the country and respecting people with the necessary knowledge.

“I was ashamed of one of my appointees when I was Minister of Transport. I appointed her to improve and turn things around, but unfortunately, she was more interested in speaking Hausa/Fulani to the President.

“Nigeria is where it is today because many Nigerians vote based on religion and ethnicity.

“An ordinary northerner who is Muslim has no problem with an ordinary southerner who is Christian. The issue arises only during elections when religion is politicised.

“Let me tell you, no Nigerian leader cares for the poor because they know Nigerians can do nothing to them once they are in power,” Amaechi said.

On why he refused to work for President Bola Tinubu, Amaechi said he had already told the President that he would neither vote for nor work for him.

“I met President Tinubu in Yola and told him, ‘I will not work for you and I will not vote for you.’

“People say I do not work for either the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but that is because I was convinced there was an issue.”

He called on Nigerians to stand up and hold their leaders accountable to reduce poverty and insecurity.

Recalling his days as a student union activist with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Amaechi said he and his colleagues used to meet in Kano under the cover of night and move about the city without fear.

He noted that this was no longer possible due to abductions and other crimes, which he attributed to multidimensional poverty.

Earlier, the guest lecturer, Dr Chidi Amuta, observed that democracy in Nigeria had remained stunted because post-colonial parliaments were established on the backs of poor people.

“The form of political organisation preceded the content of the lives of the people. An unproductive political elite imposed formal democracy on a mostly poor population.

“This is why democracy has remained stunted in much of Africa.”

Amuta also pointed out that the categorisation of poverty in Nigeria as “multidimensional” unsettled politicians.

“While politicians often say Nigeria has about 100 million poor people, the new National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) categorisation puts the poverty population at a staggering 133 million.

“This represents 65 per cent of the fictional total population of about 220 million. In simple terms, those who are not poor have now been overwhelmed by the poor.”

He said the future of democracy in Nigeria depended on the fight against the expanding frontier of aggressive poverty.

Amuta stated that the immediate challenge for democracy in Nigeria and Africa was to recalibrate its relevance from the perspective of the poor majority.

He emphasised that democracy should be measured by how well it improved the welfare and rescued people from the “republic of poverty.”

“Let us, therefore, define democracy by the living conditions of the poor,” he added.

  • What Obasanjo said about African leaders to mark his 87th birthday

What Obasanjo said about African leaders to mark his 87th birthday

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Tuesday, said Africa must begin to groom selfless and transformational leaders to move the continent forward.

Obasanjo spoke in Abeokuta at an event organised to mark his 87th birthday.

The event also witnessed the launching of the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute (OOLI), an arm of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) and his new book titled: “The Art of Leading: Unconventional Wisdom from Biblical”.

Obasanjo said it was important to groom new leaders who would be selfless and willing to sacrifice for the greater good of Africa.

“Leadership is preeminent in anything we do and if leadership is preeminent in anything we do, how do we recruit?, how do we train? and how do we nurture leaders in all works of life?

“Leaders that will be transformational instead of transactional, leaders that will be servant leaders, sacrificial.

“In addition to writing books and talking about it, what do we need to inculcate? what do we need to make people absorb leadership tenets.

“Leadership principles and factors that will make us move fast and move far together and that is what Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute is about, ” Obasanjo said.

The former president also called for the adoption of an African-style democracy that would be sufficiently African in content and recognise its culture and history.

He said the adoption of Western liberal democracy gave room for electoral malpractice and encouraged politicians to win elections by “hook or crook”.

“We are rethinking liberal democracy because if it is relevant to their culture and their history, what they have given us is not relevant to our culture and to our history,” he said.

Also, a former President of Ghana, John Mahama, called on African leaders to practice all inclusive democracy that accommodate views of the oppositions.

According to him, effective leadership is important and it is one that continues to make progress even in the face of challenges.

The event was attended by former President Goodluck Jonathan and the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Mathew Kukah.

Others dignitaries include Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Gov. Caleb Mutfwang  of Plateau and Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa.

  • New Year: Agric Minister, Kyari felicitates with Nigerians, says food security will gather pace in 2024

New Year: Agric Minister, Kyari felicitates with Nigerians, says food security will gather pace in 2024

The Minister of Agriculture, Senator Abubakar Kyari has said food security will gather pace in 2024.

The Minister made this disclosure in a new year message to Nigeria noting that:

“We felicitate with fellow Nigerians, as we usher in a New Year of renewed hope and great expectations. We acknowledge that, in many respects, the past year, 2023, presented challenges to us as a nation, and as families and individuals.

” During this festive season, we heard citizens’ complaints about the cost of food items and citizens’ diminished purchasing power. We would like to assure Nigerians that we have heard their cries, and are working assiduously to arrest the high food inflationary trend that has been on for some time. In our task, we are happy that we have the full backing and encouragement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has deployed statesmanship in developing pathways to ease our national pains, and set the country on a higher and faster trajectory of growth and development.

“Affordability is one of the critical indices of food security, along with availability, accessibility, sustainability, and nutrition. We recognise that food affordability has been impacted by, among others, transportation costs, infrastructure impediments, and exchange rate volatility, especially with regard to the imported component of our food requirements.

“However, the good news is that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is boosting domestic production of staple crops. This has been accelerated with the launch, in November 2023, of the dry season farming, targeting wheat, rice, maize, and cassava. We hereby appeal to farmers to continue to heed the expert advice of Extension Service Agents. We also applaud state governments that have made interventions, in line with President Tinubu’s food security agenda.

” We call on all stakeholders in the agriculture and food security sector to be alert to the prospects and opportunities that the New Year presents. In 2024, we shall not only round off the dry season farming which commenced in November last year, but also have the full wet season farming, and thereafter the commencement of the next dry season farming. Several other agriculture-related programmes and projects are still running.

“For us in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, a number of items in our Strategic Work Plan will equally gather pace in the New Year. This includes formalising the processes and procedures for bringing under cultivation the vast arable land currently lying fallow in the possession of Federal institutions and establishments. Our goal in this regard is to significantly increase agricultural production in more secure environments.

“We will also proceed with the reform of Bank of Agriculture with the ultimate objective of enabling genuine farmers access affordable credit. This will be in addition to ramping up insurance for players in the agriculture and food security sector.

“Our sights are also set on boosting animal husbandry, poultry and allied businesses, aquaculture, as well as agro-forestry.

” Once again, while we congratulate Nigerians on the New Year, let us as citizens join hands to till our fertile lands and reap of the abundant harvests.

    Happy New Year!!!

Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
