  • How I want Nigerians to celebrate my 72nd birthday – Atiku

How I want Nigerians to celebrate my 72nd birthday – Atiku

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday said his 72nd birthday which holds on Sunday was coming at a time that calls for sober reflection and prayer, rather than merriment.

He said a time like this required a sharp focus on rescuing Nigeria from the economic crisis and global ignominy.

Atiku said this in a statement made available to journalists by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe.

The former Vice President, therefore, enjoined his family, friends, and associates to withhold from placing adverts to congratulate him.

While appreciating their good intentions, Atiku said he would prefer if his well-wishers instead channelled their funds for adverts and congratulatory messages to charity organisations of their choice, such as orphanages.

The statement read, “Atiku Abubakar understands clearly that birthdays are a time of celebration, of looking back and thanking God for life, for achievements and milestones, and for great expectations of a more glorious future to come.

He is also painfully aware that, at this time, many Nigerians have little to celebrate: the millions who are out of jobs, the civil servants who are owed months of salaries, the indigenes of villages and towns across Nigeria whose daily reality is violent insurgency or spontaneous attacks, the tens of millions whose dire economic circumstances have earned Nigeria the shameful title of the world’s extreme poverty capital of the world to mention but a few.

These times call for sober reflection and prayer, rather than merriment and jollification. These times require laser sharp focus on rescuing Nigeria from the economic crisis and global ignominy.

These times must be dedicated solely to the task of getting Nigeria working again, on JOBS (Jobs, Opportunities, Being United and Security). The time for celebration will definitely come. But, first of all, the battle for the soul of our nation must be won.

Atiku Abubakar thanks Nigerians for their overwhelming support of his quest to lead our great country out of darkness into light in 2019.”

  • Anenih cancels 85th birthday celebration, explains why

A former minister of works, Tony Anenih, has said he will not be celebrating his 85th birthday with pomp as a result of the poor state of affairs of the nation.

Anenih, also a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said in a statement on Monday that he was putting off the celebration initially scheduled to hold on August 4.

There is no doubt that attaining a milestone of 85 years on earth is a privilege enjoyed by a few; and, it is, therefore, an occasion worth celebrating with loved ones and friends,” Mr Anenih said.

On reflections, however, whilst I remain grateful to God for His unfailing love and sustenance that have kept me all through the years, I am, sadly, unable to fulfill this earnest desire to celebrate the milestone because of the unfortunate recent losses that befell my family in quick succession, the condition of my health and the sad state of the nation that has witnessed so much losses, bloodshed and apprehension.

Nonetheless, I sincerely appreciate the effort being made by government and some influential Nigerians to restore peace.

I believe that with prayers and faith in God, there is hope for restoration of peace and good neighbourliness in Nigeria soon and in the years ahead.”

Anenih urged all well-meaning Nigerians both at home and in the Diaspora to be united in purpose and join in prayers for God’s intervention in the affairs of our nation.

Indeed, members of my immediate family have decided to respect my decision and they have already cancelled initial arrangements to celebrate my 85th birthday with pomp,” said Mr Anenih, who is also titled as the Iyasele of Esanland.

While I pray to the Almighty God to perfect my health and give me the grace to witness many more years on earth, I believe that the future holds a great promise of wonderful times to get together for birthday celebrations and other festivities.”
