    Team Nigeria’s Olympic dreams fade as Ofili, Oborodudu miss out on medals

    Nigeria’s hope of winning its first medal at the ongoing Olympics was dashed following Blessing Oborududu’s defeat in the Women’s Freestyle 67kg bout on Tuesday.

    The Tokyo 2021 Olympics Silver Medallist lost to Japan’s Ozaki Nonaka 3-0.

     

    Another missed opportunity for Nigeria came when Favour Ofili placed fourth in the women’s 200m race at the Stade de France. American Gabrielle Thomas claimed the gold with a dominant performance, finishing in 21.83 seconds.

    Thomas, who took bronze in Tokyo and silver at last year’s world championships, finally achieved her long-promised global title, denying Julien Alfred a sprint double.

    Olympics: Team Nigeria eyes double medals as Ofili, Oborodudu compete today

    Favour Ofili and Blessing Oborududu will be the center of attention as Team Nigeria is expected to win at least two medals today (Tuesday, August 6th) at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

     

    In the women’s 200m final at 8:30 pm, Favour Ofili aims to make history by becoming Nigeria’s first sprinter to win an Olympic gold medal. Ofili is in excellent form, having set a new season’s best of 22.05 seconds to secure her place in the final on Monday.

    She finished second behind new 100m champion Julien Alfred in the first semi-final, clocking two season bests in just 24 hours, with 22.24 seconds in her heat on Sunday.

     

    Her 22.05 seconds is the third-fastest time in the semi-finals, behind Julien Alfred’s 21.98 seconds and Gabby Thomas’ 21.86 seconds, positioning her in the bronze medal zone at least.

    The 21-year-old is determined to win Nigeria’s first individual track event gold medal at the Olympics or at least break the 28-year medal drought in the 200m event, last won by Mary Onyali with a bronze in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.     Earlier, at 5:15 pm, Blessing Oborududu will compete in the 65 kg freestyle wrestling bronze medal match, seeking to deliver Nigeria’s first medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Oborududu, a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, is aiming to make up for her narrow 3-1 defeat to Kyrgyzstan’s Meerim Zhumanazarova in the semi-finals. She is favored to win the bronze against North Korea’s Pak Sol Gum and add another Olympic medal to her collection.

     

    As Nigerians eagerly await these events, they hope Favour Ofili and Blessing Oborududu can deliver as expected and bring pride to Team Nigeria.

    Nigeria’s Blessing Oborududu did not qualify for the final of the women’s 68kg wrestling event on Monday after losing her semi-final match.

    She was defeated 3-1 by Kyrgyzstan’s Meerim Zhumanazarova, falling short of her silver medal performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

    Oborududu will now compete in a repechage mini-tournament for a chance to win one of the two bronze medals available.

    Paris 2024: Blessing Oborodudu qualifies for semi-final in Wrestling

    Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Blessing Oborududu advanced to the semi-finals of the women’s 68kg freestyle wrestling event on Monday, coming from behind to defeat France’s world No. 3 Koumba Larroque 6-2.

     

    Relying on her wits and experience, the Nigerian wrestler overcame the challenge posed by Larroque and the supportive home crowd. Oborududu trailed 2-1 in the second period but secured a crucial takedown with 1:10 left. As Larroque pressed for the winning score, Oborududu clinched the victory with another takedown.

     

    In the quarter-finals, Oborududu faced former Canadian world champion Linda Morais, defeating her 8-2. Despite trailing 2-0 in the first period after a takedown by Morais, Oborududu staged a strong comeback in the second period, executing three takedowns for the win.

     

    Koumba Larroque reached the quarter-finals by defeating New Zealand’s Tayla Ford 6-0.

    Asaba 2022: Nigerian wrestler, Blessing Oborodudu hails event’s organizers

    Nigerian wrestler, Blessing Oborodudu has hailed the organizers of the Asaba 2022 Sports festival saying it’s an improvement upon the last one held in Edo state.

    Although, Oborodudu claimed not to have really gone around to see every game and venue but said the ones she has seen so far have surpassed her expectations.

    On the wrestling event that started on Tuesday, the female wrestler gave thumbs up to the organizer but only said the only negative is that the wrestling hall is small.

    Oborodudu mentioned this while granting an interview to TheNewsGuru at the tournament.

    She said she has spotted good wrestlers at the NSF, saying the future of the tournament in the country is bright.

    On seeing upcoming wrestlers beating her record, she said it’s her prayers to see young wrestlers Male &Female competing and winning laurels for the country.

    She said she began wrestling during her secondary days and eventually joined the wrestling team much later when she discovered she could do it.

    Blessing Oborududu won Olympic Games’ silver medal in the women’s freestyle 68kg, the first won by a Nigerian wrestler in history.

    The 32-year-old won the Tokyo 2020 silver medal n her third appearance at the Olympics since 2012 in London.

    Oborududu announced herself to the wrestling world in 2007 when she was invited to join Nigeria’s team for the African Games. She was unrivalled in secondary school, where she started wrestling, and quickly caught the attention of the Bayelsa government, a Southern state in Nigeria, that invited her for the prestigious National Sports Festival.

    Two years later, she cemented her position in the National Wrestling team and has maintained the spot, being a regular in continental tournaments.

    Tokyo 2020: Oborodudu guarantees Nigeria first Olympics medal

    Finally Team Nigeria is guaranteed a medal at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics, thanks to Blessing Oborodudu for winning her semi-final wrestling bout against Mongolia’s Battsetseg Soronzonbold.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Oborodudu won her semi-final bout against Soronzonbold in the women’s 68 kg wrestling to guarantee Nigeria gold or silver in the final.

    Oborodudu beat Soronzonbold 7-2 to land a first ever medal for Nigeria in wrestling at the Olympics.

    Soronzonbold won bronze at the 2012 London Olympics and two gold medals at the 2010 and 2015 World Championships.

    Oborodudu is now guaranteed a gold or silver in the final and will take on 28-year-old Tamyra Mensah from USA on Tuesday.

    Mensah, who won bronze and gold at the World Championships in 2018 and 2019 respectively, beat Ukraine’s Alla Cherkasova 10-4 in the other semi-final.
