…as youths protest human rights abuse by soldiers on rescue mission

Apparently disturbed by the Christmas bloodbath on Christmas Eve, Bokkos women stormed the palace of their district head, Saf Adanchin and set it ablaze after registering their displeasure at the police DPO’s office.

The women had visited the STF command and the DPO of police in Bokkos to register their pleasure over the serial arrests of Bokkos indigenes on the heels of two Fulani corpses found dead by unidentified persons in Bokkos.

Earlier the Bokkos Progressive Youths had issued a statement lamenting the bias of the security operatives before today’s incident.

In the statement signed by the youths president, Christopher Luka Tulladem queried the role of the military in arresting indigenes instead of the police and demand an explanation from the authorities.

    BOKKOS PROGRESSIVE YOUTHS
    5TH JANUARY 2024

HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE BY THE MILITARY IN BOKKOS L.G.A. OF PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA.

“It is with pain in our hearts that we write to address you concerning the continuous violation of Human Rights by the military sent to foil the attacks that started on 23rd December 2023 in Bokkos Local Government of Plateau State, Nigeria.

“Since the sad event happened, we have witnessed continuous arrest, detention, and brutalization of victims who managed to escape the horror of the attackers. In most cases, these victims have suffered incapacitation and bullet wounds from the same army who are supposed to protect them.

“The rate of this violation has taken a dramatic dimension since Wednesday 3rd January, 2024 with the continuous dehumanizing and brutal treatment meted out on our youths(All of Christian Faith and IDPs) on account of a corpse suspected to be a Fulani found somewhere.

” While we condemn all criminality in whatever guise, we are quick to mention here that the manner of operation by the military seems to target a particular faith.

“While we still mourn the deaths of over two hundred people in Bokkos ( All of Christian Faith) over the attacks the military in Bokkos failed to contain, even when they had prior intelligence from the Governor of the State (As mentioned by Sen. Abdullah I Ningi on the floor of the National Assembly), the failure to make any substantial arrest even after it happened is a matter of concern to us.

” We are shocked to see the manner of dehumanizing and brutal treatment meted out to these innocent people over the alleged killing of a Fulani. We are forced to ask these questions:

    1. How many terrorist (of whom their faith is known to you) have you arrested and dehumanized like this over the genocide in Bokkos?

    2. Is a Fulani’s life more important than other Nigerians?

    3. When has the Nigerian Military ceded its role of protecting territorial integrity to arrest and incapacitation of innocent civilians?

Arrest and investigation is purely a Police affair. They should quickly excuse themselves and allow police to do their constitutional duty.

    4. What happens to the military gadgets and equipment meant to assist in times like this? Are they all not in good condition at the time of these attacks?
And they can only be available when possibly it’s the other way?
These are questions that demand answers.

“We are fast losing our confidence in the Nigerian Military to be fair to all.
Again, we must add that these attacks happened in our villages, currently, our people cannot access their farms to irrigate their farms, we thought the military would have carried out clearance operations in those villages so that people could at least access their farms, but the issue is the reverse. The concentration of the military is in Bokkos town, showing their might on the victims of attacks while the remnants and crops of the victims are either looted or burnt by the terrorists.
Given the above, we call for the following:

    1. The President, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinibu (GCFR), The President of the Senate, Sen. God will Akpabio, National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. C.G. Musa, Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, to immediately direct the release of those incarcerated by the military and order for the treatment of those the military incapacitated (some were last seen with various degree of gunshot injuries and handcuffed in JUTH under the watch of the heavy military)

    2. The President should set up a high-powered committee to investigate the numerous cases of human abuses by the military and punish those found culpable.

    3. The President should review the recruitment of officers and men of the military within the last eight years. Our findings have shown that the majority of the men on the ground belong to a particular faith and seem to sympathize with their fellows against upholding the oath of their duty of being fair to all Nigerians. The young officers yesterday threatened to shoot a Father who approached a Senior Officer at their base to complain about the brutality meted out to his son. This is one among many cases.

The memory of our slain youths by the same military in 2016 is still fresh in our memory.
If we have lost confidence in the last regime to protect us, you must right the wrongs of the previous administration by carrying out your primary responsibility with utmost priority to gain back our confidence as a Nation.
    4. That the Inspector General of Police should order the immediate removal of the Divisional Police Officer from Bokkos. His continues resistance to transfer amid these attacks without bringing any soluti leaves us in doubt about his integrity. He must be investigated. It is alleg that he has worked to reverse several transfers on him. What is hy benefitting? This is a matter that demands urgent investigation.

We hope to brief you subsequently as events unfold.

Ogun state Police Command arrested a 49-year-old man identified as Ganiyu Shina on Thursday for bathing with blood at a community river in Kotopo area of Odeda local government in Ogun State.

The suspect was arrested when members of the community sighted him at the river bank, where he parked his Nissan commercial vehicle, came out with local sponge and a container filled with blood, and started bathing with it.

Immediately he discovered that some people were watching him, he took to his heels, but was chased and apprehended by members of the community.

A call was made to the police at Aregbe divisional headquarters by a member of the community, and the DPO, SP Bunmi Asogbon quickly led the patrol team to the scene, from where the suspect was brought to the station.

  • Insecurity: Nigerian leaders heartless, no blood in their veins – Bishop Kukah

Insecurity: Nigerian leaders heartless, no blood in their veins – Bishop Kukah

Bishop Matthew Kukah apparently peeved with the escalating state of insecurity in Nigeria has said Nigerian leaders have no blood flowing in their veins.

Kukah said this in his homily at the burial of late Rev Fr. Alphosus Yasshim Bello at Our Lady of Apostles Catholic Church, Independence Way, Kaduna.

Fr. Alphonsus Yashim Bello was kidnapped and murdered by suspected bandits on 21st May, 2021 in Katsina.

He was kidnapped alongside Rev Fr Joseph Keke.

According to Kukah, “Those who govern us are allowing this killing of citizens in their innocency because they have no blood in their hearts.

“There is no where in the whole world where barbarity and killings of human lives as being manifested in Nigeria of today.

There is no where citizens can be slaughtered in the whole world without the government showing empathy and concern.

“The continuous barbaric slaughter and murder of our people in their innocency suggest that our beautiful Presidential Villa, National Assembly, government houses are not evidence of civilization.

How did Nigeria come to this tragic situation? We know who they are, who they believed in and where their inspiration comes from. The government have never declared the kidnappers to be a terrorists group.

He queried, “Is it possible that you have a country where people have sworn with Qur’an and Bible to uphold the principle of governance, that they will do everything within their power to protect and defend the integrity of Nigerians and suddenly we are where we are today?

“I think the President and governors of Nigeria should address Nigerians and say, ‘fellow Nigerians, I have sworn that I will not protect you from foreign invaders, kidnappers and being killed.

“‘You are on your own. Your security is in your own hands. Keeping you safe is not our immediate priority.

  • AstraZeneca: Lagos investigating two cases of suspected blood clot

AstraZeneca: Lagos investigating two cases of suspected blood clot

The Lagos State Government has said it is investigating two cases of suspected blood clot following vaccination with AstraZenca vaccine in the state.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi disclosed this in a statement while giving update on COVID-19 vaccination in the state.

According to Abayomi, so far, following the administration of the first dose of the vaccine to 257,756 persons, just a few of the persons vaccinated experienced what is termed adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) or adverse event of special interest (AESI) characterised by pain at the injection site, fever or body pains lasting 24 to 48 hours and anaphylactic shock.

“We are being extremely diligent for blood coagulation disorders in view of the prevailing international scientific attention to the possibility of increased risk of developing blood clotting disorders and two cases are being investigated.

“It is important in the interest of scientific knowledge to be able to attribute any blood clotting problems directly to the administration of the vaccine.

“The Lagos State Government has robust surveillance systems to effectively monitor and track untoward events and I would like to urge anyone who experiences any adverse events to call the number of the LGA Disease Surveillance Notification written in front of the vaccination card so that such cases can be thoroughly investigated and monitored,” he said.

Abayomi said the government had learnt several lessons during this vaccination drive, and that the challenges encountered would be addressed before the commencement of the administration of the second doses vaccination drive.

One of the challenges, he said, included the need to perfect the digital platform that would ensure scheduling of clients to prevent overcrowding at the facilities, which led to opportunists taking advantage of chaos that might ensue.

Another challenge, he added, was continuous active risk communication to manage the expectation of the residents, educate them as to the need to properly monitor adverse events and report them through the official channels.

“We sincerely apologize to citizens that may have experienced any inconveniences during the first doses administration exercises and we pledge to try to manage the mammoth logistics more effectively moving forward.

“It is important to reiterate that residents, including vaccinated persons, must continue to adhere to the measures proposed to curb the spread of the virus, i.e. wearing of face masks in public, social distancing, avoidance of crowded areas, frequent washing of hands and practice of good respiratory hygiene.

“Lagos State is fully aware of the evolution and global circulation of COVID-19 virus mutant and variant strains that appear to be acquiring the ability to cause multiple waves characterized by more serious clinical outcomes in countries like India, Brazil and certain parts of Europe,” he stated.

He said Lagos State. the consistent epicenter of Nigeria, had come out of the second wave successfully, but noted that the government is not relaxing on its oars and is preparing assiduously for all eventualities. Mr. Governor is committed to achieve herd immunity for its population through the vaccination exercise.

  • Bloodletting in Shasha Ibadan must stop now – Atiku

Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on Monday said the bloodletting in Shasha area of Ibadan, Oyo State must stop now.

Several people lost their lives after a clash triggered by the fatal stabbing of a cobbler by a cart pusher in Shasha market, Ibadan, Oyo State, degenerated into an ethnic conflict.

Within hours, the conflict spread beyond the market, as the Hausa and Yoruba communities in Akinyele Local Government Area, where the market is located, went after each other.

Reacting to this, Atiku said the state of origin of every Nigerian is Nigeria and that every Nigerian had the right to live anywhere in the country.

“The state of origin of every Nigerian is Nigeria. Nigeria gave birth to the states. The states did not give birth to Nigeria.

“Every Nigerian state must be 100% for 100% of all Nigerians, 100% of the time. No exception. Therefore, the bloodletting must stop in Sasa, and stop in every other locality,” he stated.

  • Blood not enough in Nigeria, says Consultant

A consultant of haematology at the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Uche Nwokwu, says Nigeria is yet to meet its blood needs in the country.

He made this known in an interview in Abuja on Sunday to commemorate the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD).

WBDD is celebrated annually on June 14 to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.

However, the consultant said “we are still far from what is needed to take care of our blood need in a country of over 200 million people. We have not even met up to 10 per cent of our blood need as a country.

“So many people die due to blood loses in our country, especially where we have security challenges, where there are killings and trauma, crises in various communities, road traffic accidents, various diseases and people are going for various surgeries.

“The blood need of the country is quite huge and we are very far from meeting that need, so Nigerians are encouraged to willingly go to any blood donation centres around and do the needful.

“Federal Government has established National Blood Transfusion Service, and that has zonal offices across the country.

“People can voluntarily go to those centres and donate blood to save lives.”

The World Health Organisation (WHO) stipulates that at least one per cent of the population must be able or willing to donate blood.

Nigeria needs between two to four million units of blood annually with the population of 200 million going by the indicators that the WHO provided to be able to meet the transfusion requirement of Nigerians.

Nwokwu told NAN “there is still blood supply deficiency in the country, in spite of efforts of the Federal Government and Civil Society Organisations on awareness creation.”

He attributed the blood supply deficiency to some myths surrounding blood donation.

He explained that “I mean, the awareness and response is still far from expected because of the myth surrounding blood donation so there is still phobia for donating blood.

“People are afraid of the consequences of fainting, of losing blood themselves and that has affected blood donation.

“Traditional belief on blood has also affected the response of Nigerians to donate blood.”

The consultant, therefore, urged Nigerians to dismiss the myths surrounding blood donation and donate blood regularly, and emphasised its benefits.

He said that the benefits of blood donation are enormous, noting that “apart from the moral satisfaction of saving lives, your system has a way of replacing the blood you have donated within two weeks.

“It essentially makes one healthier if you donate and it is advisable to donate blood quarterly, once in three or four months is allowed. It makes the person healthier.

“Personally, I donate twice every year -January and July. I have been doing that and I have not had cause to need blood and have not been sick. In fact, I can remember the last time I took drug for malaria.

“I do it as sacrifice and God has been using it to strengthen me,’’ he said.

  • KILLINGS: End Wanton innocent blood shedding now or Nigeria risks God’s anger – Pastor Adeboye warns

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has said many people do not know that when the ground of a nation becomes saturated with the blood of the innocent, the ground responds by producing a plague.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports the General Overseer popularly referred to as Daddy GO by devout members of the RCCG made this known in his message at the monthly Holy Ghost service of the church.
The revered, succinctly spoken man of God enjoined all Nigerians not to stop praying for mercy and divine intervention for God to stop the bloodshed in the country.
“The Bible says the life of the animal is in the blood. So, the blood is powerful, and it speaks; it has a voice. So, when you shed blood; when you shed innocent blood, the blood speaks from the earth.
“And there is something many people don’t know. When the ground of a nation becomes saturated with the blood of the innocent, the ground responds by producing a plague.
“May I give just one illustration. When the ground of shall we just say, take just one nation, Sierra Leone; it is saturated with the blood of the innocent; plague came called Ebola. I’m sure you will remember.
“Now somebody then came and brought that Ebola to Nigeria, and he brought it at the time of our convention. Probably we remember. And people had already come by thousands from all over Africa. They were already here for the ministers conference leading to the convention.
“All the governments around, they heard it. They wrote to me what are we going to do, these people are here among your people. I went to God, Daddy help me! What do I do? If there should be a single case of Ebola in this place, during convention, we are finished, because it would be carried to the whole world.
“Daddy told me one thing, and I am telling you this now, so that you will know why you must pray. He said, no problem my son, I will stop the Ebola in Nigeria. He said because the cup of Nigeria is not yet full. And you know within two weeks, the Ebola vanished from Nigeria, because at that time, the cup of Nigeria is not yet full.
“That is why I have been crying to you, I have been telling you for almost a year now please pray that God would have mercy on Nigeria so that this bloodshed can end before our cup is full,” Adeboye revealed.
While also speaking at the programme, the RCCG GO sounded a note of warning to young ministers to flee every appearances of evil.

Building collapse: Red Cross, others appeal for blood for victims

The Nigerian Red Cross (NRC) has appealed for blood donations for victims of the collapsed building on Lagos Island.

Mr Olakunle Lasisi, Secretary of NRC, Lagos made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

Publication trending on social media to appeal to the public for blood donations

Speaking on the hashtags #DonateForItafaji and #savetheitafajichildren trending on social media, to solicit for blood donations from the public, he said Red Cross would partake in the exercise.

Lasisi added that he spoke with the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service on Wednesday, and confirmed that the information was true.

“They said, yes, they are aware of it.

“It was launched by the MD of the General Hospital, so they can have enough blood in the bank to assist the casualties of the collapsed building.

“When an incident like this happens, blood donations is always required to meet the demand of those in need of blood transfusion.

“It is a good opportunity for the blood bank to replenish because there are people who want to assist.

“Some of our members who are due for blood donation will be available,” he told NAN.

Lasisi commended the Red Cross volunteers and other agencies such as LASEMA, LASAMBUS, NEMA, FED FIRE and Nigeria Police, whose efforts ensured that lives were saved.

“We left the point at about 12:30 am; we were moving out the debris there.

“There are a lot of agencies and two construction companies also assisting.

“The data we were able to collate tells us that we have about 45 persons that were evacuated and a good number of them are students,” he disclosed.

  • The Dollar is thicker than blood – Owei Lakemfa

    By Owei Lakemfa.
As we struggle to survive raging floods, the White House was this week busy, not with helping humans fight them, but employing intercontinental ballistic missiles to shoot down the United Nations Report that humans are a major contributory factor.
The UN Report written by ninety-one authors and review editors from 40 countries, and, using more than 6,000 scientific references, had a total of 42,001 expert and government review comments before its release on October 8. It warned that the world has just twelve years to avert climate change catastrophe which would include massive flooding, wildfires and food shortages. The UN which says every extra bit of warming matters, called for limiting global warming to 1.5°C compared to 2°C, or more. It argued that if this achieved, by 2100, global sea level rise would be 10 cm lower, the likelihood of an Arctic Ocean free of sea ice in summer would be once per century, and coral reefs would decline by 70-90 percent rather than 99 percent.
However, American President Donald Trump who had once called climate change a hoax, dismissed the warnings saying: “You’d have to show me the scientists because they have a very big political agenda.” Andrew Emory Dessler, climate scientist and Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M University responded to Trump’s accusation: “At its heart, this is just a wacky conspiracy theory. It’s important to realize that there’s never been a conspiracy by a huge field of science. And this would have to be an extremely massive conspiracy, considering the thousands of scientists working on this. On the other hand, there have been many examples where political advocates have tried to cast doubt on science that is extremely solid. That’s what’s going on here.”
Professor Katharine Anne Scott Hayhoe, climate scientist at Texas Tech University, also responded to Trump: “A thermometer isn’t Democrat or Republican. It doesn’t give us a different answer depending on how we vote.”
Trump’s top White House Economic Adviser, Larry Kudlow also attacked the UN Report as overestimate. “I don’t think we should panic…I don’t think there’s an imminent disaster coming, but I think we should look at this in a level-headed and analytic way.”
As for the human element in climate change, he said: “I’m just saying do we know precisely…how much of it is man-made, how much of it is solar, how much of it is oceanic, how much of it is rainforest and other issues”
As this diversionary Trump war rages, I have become a daily monitor as the floods rise in my ancestral home in the Niger Delta. In the last few weeks some relatives and friends have had to relocate. Schools were closed in in many parts. But we continue to hope it will not get to the 2012 levels when whole towns and villages evacuated. That year, 363 Nigerians were killed in the floods with 2.1 million displaced. In the current floods, we have lost 141 persons. In the three East African countries of Kenya, Rwanda and Somalia, 300 lives have been lost to rains and floods this year.
In the last two weeks, floods killed at least 12 in southwestFrance, and another dozen on the Spanish island of Mallorca.Perhaps the most tragic of these disasters occurred on Sulawesi Island, Eastern Indonesia on September 28 when a combined 7.5-magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami, killed more than 1,700 persons. An unknown number were buried under soil or swept away by waves. So overwhelming was this disaster that the government decided the best option was simply to turn some villages into mass graves since there was little chance of exhuming most of those buried in the soil.
If there is a country where a general agreement has been reached that the climate has gone bunkers, it is Japan. This year, it has been hit by a combination of earthquakes, typhoons, landslides, floods and heat waves!
Trump who had last year, pulled the United States (US) out of the Paris Climate Change Accord, is not positing a counter scientific research or argument to that of the UN. His thoughts and policies are ruled by monetary, rather than human considerations or the future of the universe. This week while touring Florida where Hurricane Michael had made a landfall killing at least 31 with several people still missing, the American President revealed why he is opposed to curbing gas emissions and checking climate change: “I will say this. I don’t want to give trillions and trillions of dollars. I don’t want to lose millions and millions of jobs. I don’t want to be put at a disadvantage.”
Trump consistently rates money above human lives. In the on-going case of the suspected murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi embassy in Turkey, lots of Americans have argued that their country which claims to be a champion of fundamental human rights and press freedom, should take a stand against Saudi gross violations of human rights. Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky for instance, argues that: “The Saudis will keep killing civilians and journalists as long as we keep arming and assisting them. The President should immediately halt arms sales and military support to Saudi Arabia.” Trump retorted: “What good does that do us? I would not be in favor of stopping a country from spending $110 billion — which is an all-time record — and letting Russia have that money and letting China have that money,” His reference is to the 2017 arms deal with the Saudi monarchy.
On the UN Report, it is not Trump alone that sees it from the prism of the dollar. Florida Senator Marco Rubio, also has money, not human lives on his mind. Rubio who is witness to the Hurricane Michael catastrophe in his constituency, said although he recognises that human activity is the main cause of climate change, but policies that would be suggested to check this will need to be weighed against “the public interest and other topics.” He added: “If we’re going to have that debate about whether certain laws should be passed in order to alleviate what some scientists or a lot of scientists are saying is the cause of this, that has to be balanced with the public interest and other topics like the economy and the like.”
It is amazing that the US with a huge body of knowledge and knowledgeable people can be led by an administration which displays so much contempt for knowledge and universal wellbeing: the beautiful thing is that the rest of humanity is marching on.
