La Liga: Barca board ready to sack Dembele

Barcelona’s board are determined to cut loose Ousmane Dembele after Monday’s deadline day events.

After seeing Dembele refuse several attractive offers to leave, Barca directors have no interest in allowing him to pull on the club’s shirt again.

Barca want to hand Dembele a free transfer – on a mutual understanding – which could include a payout of his contract.

However, says AS, should the player refuse to leave, Barca are prepared to SACK the Frenchman. The process would involve paying out the remaining months of his contract immediately and de-registering him from the squad.

Either way, the feeling inside the board room is that Dembele must not be allowed to play for the club again.

Barca president Laporta and board split on Xavi

Barcelona president Joan Laporta and his board are split on Al Sadd coach Xavi as Ronald Koeman’s successor.

Sport says Xavi is the preferred option to replace Koeman for many of the Barcelona board, but he’s not Laporta’s first pick.

The Barça president was keen for Xavi to return to the club as B team coach, like Pep Guardiola did, but it’s not something the club’s former captain will consider.

For now, as revealed on Wednesday in SPORT, Belgium coach Roberto Martinez is the candidate Laporta is most in favour of.

Months ago, Laporta made it clear he wasn’t convinced Xavi was ready for the first team: “He needs a bit more experience. That’s what the club needs. It’s the same as we did with Rijkaard, who laid the foundations, and Guardiola, who brought excellence. This situation requires experience.”

    Barca board consider 14-player clearout

Barcelona management are preparing a massive clearout this summer – with as many as 14 players slated for the transfer list.

Mundo Deportivo says there will be a ‘revolution’, with up to 14 players departing the club.

Barcelona’s perilous financial position has been well documented, so if they want to strengthen any areas of the squad, they will first need to find suitors for some out-of-favour players.

The likes of Philippe Coutinho, Samuel Umtiti, Miralem Pjanic, Martin Braithwaite, Junior Firpo, Neto and Matheus Fernandes will all be put up for sale, but there could also be some big-name players that are made available.

In addition to disappointing on the pitch, Barcelona want to move some of them on – namely Coutinho, Umtiti and Pjanic – due to their high salaries, yet this is exactly why it will not be an easy task.

Meanwhile, Barcelona remain confident that Lionel Messi will end up putting pen to paper on a new contract, but president Joan Laporta and his board of directors are aware that they will need to sell a winning project to the Argentine in order for him to commit his future to the club.

The 33-year-old is happy with the progression that Barcelona’s youngsters are making, yet he wants some elite players to come in that can hit the ground running and improve the quality of the squad.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has approved the appointment of Tunde Hassan-Odukale as Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria Limited (FBN).

CBN also approved the appointment of Remi Babalola as Chairman of FBN Holdings Plc, a subsidiary of FBN.

It had earlier announced the removal of Mrs Ibukun Awosika as Chairman of the board of FBN and Mr Oba Otudeko as Chairman of the board of FBN Holdings

Also announced the reinstatement of Sola Adeduntan as Managing Director; Gbenga Shobo as Deputy Managing Director; and Remi Oni and Abdullahi Ibrahim as Executive Directors of FBN Limited.

Adeduntan was earlier removed by the Awosika-led board and replaced with Sobo as managing director, a move the apex bank condemned as not following due process.

The apex bank made this known in a series of tweets on its twitter handle on Thursday.

The action, said CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, was to protect 31 million customers and minority shareholders of First Bank.

“First Bank of Nigeria is one of Nigeria’s systemically important banks, given its historical significance, balance sheet size, large customer base and high level of interconnectedness with other financial service providers.

“CBN reassures First Bank of Nigeria depositors, creditors and other stakeholders of the bank of its commitment to ensure the stability of the financial system,” Emefiele said.

CBN also announced the appointments of Dr Fatade Abiodun Oluwole, Kofo Dosekun, Remi Lasaki and Dr Alimi Abdulrasaq as directors of FBN Holdings.

NAN reports that the CBN had earlier raised concerns over First Bank’s failure to comply with regulatory directives on divesting its interest in Honeywell Flour Mills.

The concerns were contained in a letter dated April 26, 2021 and addressed to Ibukun Awosika, erstwhile Chairman of FBN Limited.

It was in response to their audited International Financial Reporting Standards accounts for the 2020 financial year.

In the letter signed by Director of Banking Supervision, Haruna Mustafa, the apex bank said:

“We further noted that after four years the bank is yet to perfect its lien on the shares of Mr. Oba Otudeko in FBN Holdings which collateralised the restructured credit facilities for Honeywell Flour Mills contrary to the conditions precedent for the restructuring of the company’s credit facility.”

The apex bank instructed First Bank to diversify the equity investments in all non-permissible entities such as Honeywell Flour Mills and Bharti Airtel Nigeria Limited within 90 days.
