    Repentant terrorists on Tuesday night invaded a police station in Maiduguri in an attempt to set free their colleagues that were arrested earlier over alleged drug offences.

    However, Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, Kenneth Daso, who confirmed that there was an incident at the police station, said the assailants were repelled by officers on duty.

    Daso said the security breach was heralded by an operation carried out by the police.

    He said, “On the 30/04/24 at about 1745hrs in a joint operation raid at the Kasuwar Fara, following an intelligence report that some drug peddlers, smokers, repentant and Boko Haram insurgents are indulging in nefarious activities, eight persons were arrested including seven male and a female in that operation with 476grams of illicit substances.

    Just in: Nigerian soldier injured as Maj Gen’s vehicle runs over IED planted by Boko Haram

    A military vehicle belonging to Major General MLD Sara, Theatre Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (JTF) North East (NE), Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) of the Nigerian Army has exploded after running over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Boko Haram terrorists.

    According to reports, a soldier was injured in the incident.

    The incident, which occurred in Kukareta, Yobe State was a trap set for soldiers by militants of the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram known as the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

    They are formerly known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihā.

    During the attack, the driver of the vehicle sustained a leg injury while the vehicle was badly damaged.

    However, Major General Sara and another army officer also in the military vehicle were unhurt.

    According to a military signal, the army commander was on an assessment trip to a military formation – 233 Battalion on the outskirts of Kukareta which was earlier attacked by the terrorists, when the incident occurred.

    The gunmen had launched an attack on the town where they also killed a mobile policeman and two civilians.

    “While on assessment visit to the amp by the Comd Sector 2 JTF NE OPHK Maj Gen MLD Sara’s at about 040930A, an IED planted at the entrance gate to the camp exploded which injured the Commander’s driver on the leg while the Comds staff car was also damaged but the Comd and his Radio operator were unhurt.

    “The situation is being assessed while a detailed investigation has commenced,” the military signal read.

    Tinubu urges FG to go after Kuje Prison attackers

    Sen. Bola Tinubu, All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 presidential candidate, has called on relevant authorities to go after Tuesday’s attackers of Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

    Tinubu who is also one of the leaders of the APC, made the call in a statement by his Media Officer, Mr Tunde Rahman, in Abuja.

    He particularly condemned the terrorists attack on the centre, saying that the incessant terror attacks plaguing the country was worrisome.

    The former two-term Lagos State governor, while calling on Nigerians to remain vigilant and united behind constituted authorities, said fleeing inmates from the facility must be re-arrested and returned to the facility.

    “These incessant attacks on government’s institutions and innocent citizens are a sad reminder that we still have a lot to do to put these evil forces in check.”

    He condemned the dastardly attack, urging the government to immediately go after the attackers and fleeing inmates of the facility.

    While calling for full investigation of the incident and the possible failure to act on intelligence, Tinubu said Nigerians must all remain vigilant and united.

    He added that the moment called for national unity and deep introspection.
    He, however, said that Nigerians should continue to support the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in its battle against insurgents and determination to confront agents of darkness.

    He commiserated with the families and relations of those who lost their lives in the attack and called on government to continue to provide succor and medical attention to those injured.

    Newsmen recalled that the facility’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Abubakar Umar, had in a statement, said four inmates died in the attack while 16 sustained injuries and were being treated.

    A security personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), drafted to the centre was also shot dead by the attackers who stormed the facility through the fence and main entrance, using explosive devices.

    Umar said 879 inmates escaped from the facility out of which 443 had been recaptured while efforts were ongoing to get all fleeing inmates.

    About 24 hours after the incident, a terrorist group, Islamic State West Africa (ISWAP), claimed responsibility for the attack.

    In a video shared by the terrorist group on Wednesday, many of the inmates were seen fleeing the prison.

    Umar assured that the service would deploy its Corrections Information Management System (CIMS) in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission, (NIMC) to track all fleeing inmates and return them to custody

  • Gov. Zulum inaugurates committee on repatriation, management of repentant insurgents

    Borno state governor Babagana Zulum  has inaugurated a committee on repatriation of Borno citizens leaving in Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

    Zulum while Inaugurating the committee on Monday in Government House Maiduguri, said the committee would also manage repentant insurgents, particularly how they are to come out of the bush, their rehabilitation and reintegration into the society.

    Zulum said proper handling of the task assigned the committee which has the State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Kadafur as Chairman, would lead to increased surrender of remnants of the insurgents and bring peace to Borno for the needed development.

    He explained that already the Federal Government had constituted similar committee on repatriation of victims of insurgency taking refuge in neighbouring countries.

    The Federal committee is headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and would collaborate with that of Borno for synergy.

    The governor, however, noted that there was currently a challenge of lack of space to accommodate surrendering insurgents as all the three camps provided for them had been filled to capacity.

     He said government had discussed with Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, on the need to have bigger camps.

    While reiterating the commitment of the state to fund the activities of the committee,  Zulum said it should also look for other source of funding from public and private organisations.

    He explained that few months ago, the state secured 15 million Euros as support from Germany and was being managed by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

    The Co-chairman, Mr Kaka Shehu, who thanked the governor for the confidence  reposed in them,  assured the government and people of Borno of thier commitment to deliver.

    Shehu said the committee would work in close synergy with its Federal Government counterpart for maximum result.

    Newsmen reports that Zulum also inaugurated a committee for the resettlement of residents of Mairari and Gudumbali, the headquarters of Guzamala Local Government area.

     The  area is the only remaining local government headquarters in Borno whose residents were yet to return since its recovery from insurgents.

    Borno Gov. escapes death as Boko Haram attacks convoy, kills 4

    Boko Haram terrorists have attacked the convoy of the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima and killed two soldiers and two civilians on Wednesday.

    The governor narrowly escaped death.

    According to reports, the attack happened near the town of Dikwa while Shettima was on the campaign trail ahead of nationwide elections on Saturday.

    Two soldiers and two other civilians, were reportedly killed during the ambush.
