Why Jonathan’s govt faced civic pressures – Gov El-Rufai

    …says Nigeria’s problems have evolved since 2014

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has opened up on the context under which civic pressures were brought on the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Muyiwa Adekeye, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication made this known in the statement on Tuesday.

This is following an old video of Governor El-Rufai that re-surfaced on the Internet in which the Governor was seen critically criticising Jonathan.

El-Rufai in the video was seen calling on the then president Jonathan to use all options, including negotiation, to rescue the Chibok girls.

Negotiation, a stance the Governor is presently against, and which he himself is presently facing criticisms for.

A statement released by the Special Adviser to the Governor, quoted El-Rufai to have said Nigeria’s journey since the 2014 Chibok tragedy has proven that the solution to violent crimes, including terrorism and banditry is not to negotiate.

He stated that the quantum of money paid as ransom following many negotiations with bandits have not stopped kidnappings, reduced their frequency or deterred the criminals.

He also stated that the Governor’s suggestion years ago cannot be taken as the immutable answer to Nigeria’s problems, which he said has evolved since 2014.

The statement reads: “Amidst the violence unleashed by criminal elements on the people of Kaduna State, some commentators have responded by blaming KDSG for asserting that the duty of the state is to uphold the law and not to reward hoodlums for violating the lives, property and liberties of citizens.

“Those pushing that kind of narrative are sharing a video clip of a 2014 interview in which Malam Nasir El-Rufai called on the government of President Goodluck Jonathan to use all options, including negotiation, to rescue the Chibok girls.

“The years since 2014 may have led some people to forget the denial and doubt that defined the FG’s response to the Chibok abductions, especially the initial refusal to acknowledge that it happened. That was the context under which civic pressures were brought on the government.

“Nigeria’s journey since the 2014 Chibok tragedy has proven that the solution to violent crimes, including terrorism and banditry, is a robust response from the state and its coercive agencies.

“The quantum of money paid as ransom following many negotiations with bandits have not stopped kidnappings, reduced their frequency or deterred the criminals.

“The experience of many states in the Northwest of Nigeria since 2015 has included cattle rustling, kidnappings, killings and the devastation of communities by criminals.

“Several states sought to negotiate their way out of the problems by talking to bandits, paying them money or offering them amnesty. This has not worked and has only encouraged the criminals to press ahead for a surrender of the public treasury to them. That is clearly not in the public interest.

“Mass abduction was like in novelty in 2014. But the facts have changed since then. Negotiations and ransoms have been undertaken, but these have not stopped the criminals. It has only encouraged them.

“It is only prudent to review one’s position when the facts change, and the suggestion made by a citizen years ago cannot be taken as the immutable answer to a serious problem which has evolved since 2014, no matter the viral replays of the said video clip.

“The Kaduna State Government has been consistently transparent about its security challenges. It has supported and continues to resource the security agencies in the state.

“We are engaging the Federal Government to have security responses that move away from reactive response of repelling bandits towards a comprehensive, proactive offensive that takes the battle to the criminals and uproots them.

“As a sub-national, with no direct control of any of the security agencies, we cannot make this task more difficult by giving criminals the resources to acquire more arms.

“KDSG regrets the recent kidnaps and killings of students from tertiary institutions in our state, and we sympathize with their families with whom we share the aim of the safe return of all the students.

“We mourn the dead students and we offer our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. The ruthless and heartless resort of the kidnappers to murdering these young persons is part of their effort to further their blackmail and compel us to abandon our ‘no-ransom, no-negotiation’ policy.

“Are people bothering with the consequences of state surrender to hoodlums, or is the continued politicization of security challenges not going to make all of us ultimately victims of the insurgents?

“The fact that criminals seek to hold us by the jugular does not mean we should surrender and create an incentive for more crime.

“In today’s Nigeria, it has become fashionable to treat the unlawful demands of bandits as worthy of consideration and to lampoon people who insist that outlaws should be crushed and not mollycoddled or availed the resources they can use to unleash further outrages”.

  • Buni speaks on security situation in Yobe after days of Boko Haram attacks

Buni speaks on security situation in Yobe after days of Boko Haram attacks

Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni, on Tuesday said the security situation in the state generally needed quick response and reassessment.

Buni made his position known during an emergency security meeting in Damaturu.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that some Boko Haram insurgents invaded communities in Geidam Local Government of the state attacking households and spreading their philosophies. On Monday, a viral video of residents leaving the area surfaced online.

Speaking on the development, the governor said: “We thanked God for the relative peace we now enjoy in most parts of the state.

“However, the sad events in Geidam calls for quick response and reassessment of the security situation in our respective communities and the state generally,” he said.

The governor condemned the recent Boko Haram attack on Geidam town.

He described the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks on Geidam in which some lives were lost with men, women, children, young and old forced out of their homes as sad.

Buni said the displacement of the victims in this holy month of Ramadan, was condemnable, crude and grossly inhumane.

He said that the meeting concentrated on strategic engagement of critical stakeholders to discuss issues of security as they affected individual communities and the state at large.

He noted that special a security plan was mapped out to figh insurgency in Geidam because of its geographical location, sitting close to the Lake Chad basin.

Buni also noted that Geidam was bordering Niger Republic and Damasak in Borno, one of the areas heavily infiltrated by Boko Haram insurgents.

“I am pleased to state that far reaching decisions were made at the meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff especially, on reinforcement of personnel and improved strategy to effectively combat the attacks,” he said.

The governor enjoined the people to volunteer credible and timely information to the security agencies to enhance proactive actions being taken in curbing the menace of the terrorists.

“We must expose every bad egg in our communities even if they are our relations, including our biological children.

“It is our responsibility to report suspicious movements in or near our communities. We cannot keep blaming government and security agencies while people hoard valuable information.”, Buni stressed.

Medical doctor arrested for allegedly being Boko Haram informants

The government of Niger State in north-central Nigeria has said it has arrested nine persons, including a medical doctor, for being Boko Haram informants.

Abdulberqy Ebbo, the Director-General of strategic operations, ICT and public enlightenment unit at the Niger State Government House, claimed the men confessed to revealing the movements of troops to Boko Haram fighters.

“One of the 9 arrested bandits’ informants in Niger state is a medical doctor, they’ve also confessed to leaking information on troops movements to bandits,” Ebbo said.

One of the 9 arrested bandits’ informants in Niger state is a medical doctor, they’ve also confessed to leaking information on troops movements to bandits. What could more horrendous than drumming support for your own people to be killed and their farm lands destroyed?

Boko Haram insurgents have been carrying out a campaign of terror in Nigeria’s northeast for over two decades.

Although Boko Haram insurgents have been largely confined to the northeast, Niger State has been seeing an uptick in the activities of the terror in recent months.

At least 27 students of Government Science College (GSC) Kagara and 14 others including teachers were abducted when armed bandits attacked their school in February.

Tens of people have also killed or kidnapped in the state by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram fighters.

The governor of the state Sani Bello said on Monday evening that the terror group has hoisted its flag in parts of the state.

Bello said at least 50m communities are under the control of the group. He said he feared the group may want to establish a base in the state.

“They’ve taken over the territory, they’ve installed their flag,” Bello said. “I am confirming that now. They’ve taken over the wives of people by force”, he said.

“Boko Haram elements are trying to use these areas as their home just like they did in Sambisa.”

The presence of Boko Haram in the state portends danger for Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. The group had carried multiple attacks in the city before President Muhammadu Buhari came into power in May 2015.

A despondent Bello said the Nigerian Government has not offered any help and that he would not wait for it to come.

“I have not lost hope from the federal government, but I am not waiting for anyone anymore,” he said.

  • Insecurity: We as Buhari’s supporters can no longer keep quiet – Senator Adeyemi

Insecurity: We as Buhari’s supporters can no longer keep quiet – Senator Adeyemi

The Senator Representing Kogi West Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the National Assembly (NASS), Senator Smart Adeyemi has said supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari can no longer keep quiet over the security situation of the country.

Senator Adeyemi stated this on Tuesday, while debating a motion moved by Senator Sani Musa on the activities of bandits and Boko Haram terrorists in Shiroro and Rafi Local Government Areas of Niger State.

He described the present situation of the country as worse than the civil war, and that President Buhari must rise to the occasion and bring in people to save the country or else, Adeyemi said, everyone would be consumed.

“Insecurity is a serious problem today in Nigeria and there comes a time we cannot but speak the truth. Today, all of us have been threatened. We need not run away from the fact that this is the worst instability we are facing.

“In fact, this is worse than the civil war. The answer is very simple. We cannot pretend that we are capable of confronting the issues we are facing. Let us shout and call for foreign support.

“The President should get to know that we as supporters can no longer keep quiet. The nation is on fire. The President must rise to the occasion and bring in people to save this country or else we will be consumed. We cannot keep quiet any longer.

“It has gotten to a situation that we cannot sleep with our two eyes closed. Our security system has collapsed and because it has failed we need to look for foreign support.

“The President must know that this is a bad time for our nation. Let us shut down this National Assembly if we cannot save this country,” the Kogi Senator said.

Contributing to the motion, the APC Senator representing Osun Central, Senator Ajibola Basiru, who is also Spokesperson of the Nigeria Senate, said the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is incapable of securing the country as it is.

Senator Basiru, who is also Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, argued that there was need to recruit at least five thousand security personnel in each state of the federation.

“As at today the @PoliceNG is incapable of securing the country. It is also important that we need to come up with a martial plan to address this issue of insecurity in Nigeria.

“And in minimum, we need to recruit at least five thousand security personnel in each state. We should stop lamenting as a National Assembly and take actions,” he said.

Meanwhile, citing Order 42 and 52, seeking the leave of the Senate, and presenting the motion, Senator Musa lamented the activities of bandits and Boko Haram terrorists in Shiroro and Rafi Local Government Areas of Niger State, which he said has taken a dangerous dimension.

He noted: “in this hallowed chamber we have made several resolutions, set up Ad-hoc Committee on Security and declared every support at bringing an end to the persistent insecurity in our nation.

“We have appropriated budget and also advances numerous steps to support our nation’s security agencies, yet insecurity has continued to elude the nation.

“Almost seven years now Niger East Senatorial District of Niger State have come under constant and sustained multiple deadly attacks by heartless, venomous and hydra headed Boko Haram terrorists who are always heavily armed with assorted sophisticated and dangerous weapons unleashing their horror on our innocent populace”.

He further noted: “negative effects of atrocities committed by these heartless monsters in the period under review include among others, total collapse of the local economies of the affected victims, total collapse of educational system in the affected areas, famine due to collapse of agricultural activities, displacement as a result of desertion of crisis prone areas, depopulation as a result of wanton deaths, social vices such as drug abuse and thuggery emanating from struggle for survival, trauma arising from serial rape cases and inhumane, cruel and deadly subjugation.

“Unfortunately, these repeated attacks are taking place amidst absence of slightest hindrance, resistance or confrontation from the authorities concerned.

“Cognisance that about 42 communities across the two local government areas of Shiroro and Munya Local Government have so far fallen under the Boko Haram control with about 5,000 villagers already displaced in the last three days.

“They have kidnapped many and their wives seized from them and forcefully attached to Boko Haram members.

“Three military camps in Allawa, Bassa and Zagzaga in the two local government areas have been sacked and some security personnel killed by the insurgents in the last one month of renewed attacks.

“I can authoritatively confirm that the Boko Haram terrorist have mounted their flags in many of the villages they have captured such as Kaure, Alawa and Magami. Inhabitants of these war-torn parts of the State have been abandoned and left to their fate thereby compelling them to wallow in perpetual agony and abject misery.

“Furthermore at this moment primary schools in Gwada, Kuta, Pandogari and Minna have hurriedly been turned to IDP camps following the sacking of nearly 5600 villagers from their ancestral homes in Shiroro, Rafi and Munya local government areas in the last few weeks by bandits who raided the towns and villages.

“And what this means is that if they can launched attacks without hindrance in Niger East Senatorial District then I don’t see how we can be safe Abuja anymore.

“Again notes before the recent Bandits struck Kagara headquarters of Rafi Local Government, Madaka-Gari, Maikujeri, Magami, Zangouru, Bassa, Gusoro, Galadiman Kogo and Kokki villages where all attacked with casualties as more than 46 people were killed.

“And between March 2021 to date same terrorist have launched serial attacks on daily basis to adjoining villages of Alawa, Shakodna, Chiri, Kwaki, Ajatayi, Gwassa, Barden Dawaki and Gyammamiya communities in Munya and Shiroro local Government Areas of Niger State killing many innocent people which also resulted to the lost of more than 25 Gallant soldiers, mobile policemen and other security personnel, while more than 16 civilians were killed, many others unaccounted and leaving over 2300 displaced, while over 1500 are now sheltered at Primary Schools turned temporary camps at Erena, Galadima-Kogo and Zumba.

“The number of persons said to have been killed by bandits in Niger East are over 475 between January 2020 to date.

“Aware that the Federal Government had made frantic efforts in curbing the menace through various Operations to tackle cases of terrorism, banditry, cattle rustling and kidnapping across Nigeria, but yet the expected return of peace in our land is unattainable.

“And this call for a total review of the nations security architecture as proposed in the report of the senate ad-hoc committee on Security.

“Further aware that confirmed reports emanating from those affected areas of Allawa and Bassa towns in Shiroro local government, Niger State indicated that the Joint Security Task Force stationed there have been withdrawn.

“However, no reason have been advanced for the withdrawal but observers believe it will not be unconnected with the casualties suffered by the JSTF during last unfortunate invasion and ambushing of the troops stationed at Alawa by the heartless, venomous and hydraheaded terrorists.

“Worried that the continuous security challenges and related attacks by terrorist on towns, villages and communities in Shiroro, Rafi and Munya Local Government Areas of Niger State have meted untold hardship on the people and has subjected the affected areas under serious survival threat.

“If this menace is not drastically addressed, the attacks will continue and the danger is that it may escalate further to other communities. which are mostly farming communities and they are farmers, may desert their farms this season and this will negatively affect the food sufficiency and economic diversification policy of the Federal Government”.

Reacting, Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi said: “This issue is not just Niger, it is all over the country. My observation is what is so wrong in our system that makes us not to respect early warning signals?

“In the last 10 years there have been several reports that has given us indications that Nigeria may be entering into the situation that we are describing now. Fundamentally, what are we doing wrongly that will make us to ignore warning signals?

“That is where my concern is. We need to have a private session with the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of this country to find a lasting solution to this huge national embarrassment.

“What we are witnessing is internal insurrection that is snowballing into the case of a war”.

Meanwhile, on his part, Senator Gabriel Suswam said: “The Executive has shown clear incompetence of handling this security issue. Let us do the needful. Let us seriously sit down with Mr. President as a house to show the seriousness of what we have found ourselves in.

“Otherwise we will just find people who will overwhelm us here. Gradually people are getting very impatient. The motion moved by our colleague here is about the fourth time he has moved such a motion.

“Let us have an Executive Session and frankly discuss this thing so that we can frankly talk and come up with solutions so that we can save Nigeria”.

Also, Senator Biodun Olujimi said: “I believe we are all tired coming here to talk about insecurity, kidnapping and all the sort. We are where we must now bring out all our arsenals and use on insecurity. There is no political will to handle insecurity.

“We must know what government wants to do about insecurity and this Senate must insist and find out what they want to do”.

However, Senator Seriake Dickson blamed the issues bewildering the nation on a faulty constitutional structure, stressing that the challenge the nation is faced with is a challenge of leadership.

He said: “I am impressed that we are looking at issues passionately as we ought to. Right now, there is also loss of fate in the Nigeria dream, project and vision.

“This is why some of us including myself have taken the position that all these issues that are bewildering us is a product of the faulty constitutional structure. How can one man comfortably sit down in Abuja & police our nation of about 200 million people?

“We are about to lose the Nigeria dream and we should not let that happen. The challenge is the challenge of leadership. Everyone must rise to the occasion.

“Mr. President should rise and take leadership and do what he has to do including leading in the area of fundamental constitutional reform”.

Following debate on the motion, the Senate resolves to: “Call on the Chief of Defense Staff, the Chief of Army Staff and the Inspector General of Police to immediately deploy troops to defend the unarmed populace and bring back security to the affected communities, which is the only antidote to restoring confidence in the security and safety of the affected communities.

“Urge the Chief of Army Staff and the Inspector General of Police to as a matter of urgency direct for the establishment of a permanent military and police command base at the axis adjoining Shiroro and Rafi Local Government areas respectively and to redesigned the modus of operandi of the military operations within the affected areas so as to curtail the escalating insecurity.

“Direct the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and NEMA to as a matter national emergency provide relief materials and medical support team to the victims immediately.

“Call on the Senate to observe a minute silence for all the victims of these callous acts of criminality”.

Outrage as old video shows Gov El-Rufai calling for negotiation with terrorists

An old video that shows Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai calling on ex-president Goodluck Jonathan to negotiate with Boko Haram for the release of Chibok girls has re-surfaced on the Internet.

The video has sparked an outrage, while reactions continue to trail the ongoing attacks and abductions of citizens in Kaduna State given the stance of the State Government not to negotiate with bandits.

Governor El-Rufai in the old video expressed his support for negotiation with terrorists which is contrary to his current stance as Kaduna State Governor.

“Whatever it takes to rescue those girls should be done. If one of these girls was Jonathan’s daughter the story will be different, the only reason these girls are still in captivity is because they are not the daughter of any important man in Nigeria and we know it,” the Governor said in the video.

He added: “…if you say am politicising terrorism then go and rescue the girls so that I don’t have the basis to politicise it.

“I am in support of every option, when you have lives of your citizens at risk, you should not take any option off the table, you should be flexible, you should listen, you should negotiate and look the price you have to pay and get those girls out, you should not say you won’t do this, you won’t do that, it’s irresponsible”.

Governor El-Rufai has been under more pressure to negotiate with bandits following the most recent attack involving the students of Greenfield University Kaduna.

The attack led to the kidnapping of an unspecified number of students amongst which five have so far been killed.

I will not allow my reputation muddled – Pantami

Spokesperson to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Uwa Suleiman has said Isa Ali Pantami will not sit idly to see his hard-earned reputation muddled.

Spokesperson to the embattled Minister made this known in a statement on Monday, alleging that there are plans to release doctored videos purporting to show the Minister in a compromising condition.

Suleiman stated that the plans to release the doctored videos of Pantami was the next stage of the “cancel campaign” against the Minister, and that there would be consequences.

The statement reads: “We are in receipt of credible intelligence that the same forces who have been championing a well-coordinated and richly funded campaign against the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, are now unto the next stage of their diabolic project.

“This time around, the forces of evil are shopping for willing partners as well as their usual avenues, to release doctored videos purporting to show the Honourable Minister in an alleged compromising condition, as a way of creating injury on his image.

“We are least surprised by this recent move which is a clear intensification of their desperation, having failed in their assault on the personality of the Honourable Minister, despite their previous efforts.

“After concocting lies and half-truths linking the Honourable Minister with terrorism, despite his well-documented stance against Boko Haram and similar groups, these adversaries went to the extent of doctoring a document with capacity to endanger national security. It was a relief for peace-loving Nigerians that the gimmick also failed to strike that sensitive chord.

“This notice therefore is to alert the public to the latest ungodly plan and to warn the perpetrators about the consequences of such action.

“The Honourable Minister will not sit idly to see his hard-earned reputation as a respected community leader, Islamic Scholar and public servant being muddled in the mud by paid agents with no adherence to truth and fear of God”.

  • B/Haram: Embrace negotiation, save Nigeria N1.2 trillion annually: Ex-diplomat advocates

B/Haram: Embrace negotiation, save Nigeria N1.2 trillion annually: Ex-diplomat advocates

A former Nigerian diplomat has told the Federal Government to embrace negotiated settlement option to save Nigeria about N1.2 trillion being spent annually to defeat Boko Haram.

Foreign policy expert, Dr Nnamdi Onochie, gave the advice on Monday in Abuja while speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sudden death of President Idris Deby of Chad.

Deby, a key ally of France in the fight against jihadists in the Maghreb, died in battle in southern Chad on April 19, throwing his nation into fresh political uncertainty.

Onochie argued that Deby’s death and the unfolding succession crisis in Chad would compound issues for Nigeria, in its bid to crush Boko Haram insurgents.

Nigeria has been fighting Boko Haram since 2009 in a bitter conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions in the war-wracked north east.

“Now that President Derby has died, efforts to replace him between his son and the opposition will further aggravate the situation in Nigeria’s North East for all state and non-state actors.

“I advocate that Nigeria should negotiate an end to the activities of Boko Haram in the areas where the insurgency is active.’’

Onochie argued that embracing dialogue would stop “the endless bleeding’’ of Nigeria’s economy by the conflict.

According to him, Nigeria should leave the intricate ethnic politics in Chad for leaders of that country to sort out, instead of getting involved in the complex politics of the impoverished country.

Onochie, a former Nigerian envoy to Algeria, said that he was familiar with the politics of Chad, having met the country’s former president, Hissan Habre and having also been following Deby’s activities.

“It is in our best interest to end the war through negotiated strength.

“If I were the president or if I get elected as the next president of the federal republic of Nigeria in 2023, I will pursue and carry out a policy to end the war by negotiation.

“Is there any other viable alternative or can Nigeria continue fighting the war sine die? The answer is no,’’ the former diplomat said.

Chad, which gained independence from France in 1960 has known no peace for years, making the country one of the poorest in the world. (

Boko Haram terrorists distribute pamphlets, attack new IGP’s hometown in Yobe State

Boko Haram terrorists on Friday attacked Geidam local government area of Yobe State.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG gathered that Geidam is the hometown of the acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Usman Alkali Baba.

According to sources, a military jet has been deployed to the town to dislodge the insurgents.

Geidam previously came under attack on February 9, barely after newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Attahiru visited troops

Information on the number of casualties involved in Friday’s attack was unavailable but residents said there was tension in the town.

Meanwhile, the terrorists circulated a pamphlet during the attack, urging residents to support their cause to establish a Muslim caliphate or be killed.

The one-page pamphlet reads in part: “Our major aim: to uplift the word of Allah, protect the religion of Islam and the wealth of the followers.

“Our target: those who do not believe in our ideology, Christians and even Muslims who do not believe in our teachings.

“Any Muslim who is not supporting the empire of Islam is our target.

“Anyone who comes to us for forgiveness, and stop fighting us will be exempted from attacks.”
