Police refute Boko Haram arrest claims in Lagos, label report as fear-mongering

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed claims that Boko Haram suspects were arrested in the state, calling the report false and aimed at inciting public fear.

On Thursday, Kumar Sanda, head of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Lagos, allegedly claimed that thousands of suspected Boko Haram members had been apprehended in the city. “If I mention the number of Boko Haram members we’ve arrested in Lagos State, it would be hard to believe. But we’ve arrested thousands,” he reportedly stated.

In response, police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin issued a statement on Friday saying Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh immediately ordered an investigation into the claims. According to Hundeyin, the investigation found no evidence of any Boko Haram presence or arrests across the state.

The statement emphasized that leaders and workers in the trailer park areas mentioned in the original report confirmed that no such individuals were seen or detained there.

“To verify the claim, surveillance officers, the Lagos State Police Intelligence Department (SID), and other police units were dispatched to the specified areas. No arrests or sightings of Boko Haram members were reported anywhere in Lagos State,” the police said.

Hundeyin condemned the report as entirely false and designed to stir panic, assuring residents that there is no cause for alarm. He urged the public to ignore the rumor and continue their daily activities without fear.

Boko Haram in Lagos: Police open up over reported arrest of suspects

The Police Command in Lagos State has debunked a publication in some newspapers dated April 17, 2025 asserting that hundreds of Boko Haram suspects have been apprehended in Lagos.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin refuted this in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

He said that following the publication, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Olohundare Jimoh, directed an immediate investigation into the report to ascertain the true position of the claim.

“The outcome of the investigation reveals that there is nowhere throughout Lagos State that the group mentioned in the report – Boko Haram – were seen or sighted or arrested.

“Furthermore, in the trailer park communities mentioned, the leaders, operators, and drivers in the indicated places in the report clarified to the police that there were no such elements of Boko Haram seen or arrested in those localities.

“The command, notwithstanding, deployed surveillance police detectives, the Lagos State Police Intelligence Department (SID), and other formations of the Force to the mentioned places for the purpose of verification of the claim.

“No one confirmed the presence or arrest of such group members as reported in the write-up throughout Lagos State.

“Therefore, the report in its entirety is false, malicious, and ill-intended to cause fear and apprehension in the minds of the public,” he said.

Hundeyin enjoined residents to disregard and discountenance the write-up as untrue and a figment of the imagination of the writer which was very unfortunate and despicable and should be outrightly ignored.

“Members of the public are encouraged by the Commissioner of Police to go about their duties and other means of livelihood without fear or apprehension, ” he said.

The image maker enjoined the media not to allow the use of their esteemed publications to incite fake news, and outright falsehood that could jeopardise the peace and tranquility being enjoyed in the state.

“The writer of the story is advised to verify facts and truth of any information before going to the press,” he said.

The spokesperson assured residents of their safety and the police commitment to protection of lives and property in the state.

He encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or call the control room on 08063299264.

BREAKING: Boko Haram IED blast k!lls seven along Maiduguri-Damboa Road

No fewer than seven people were killed on Saturday following the detonation of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State.

The deadly incident occurred along the Maiduguri-Damboa Road, a notorious route that cuts through the Sambisa Forest—an area long plagued by insurgent activities.

The victims were part of a convoy of vehicles being escorted by the military from Damboa to Maiduguri.

According to eyewitness accounts and local sources, the explosion struck as the convoy—organized to provide safe passage through the volatile region—was underway. Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to a hospital in Maiduguri for urgent treatment.

The Maiduguri-Damboa Road serves as a vital link between the state capital and several local government areas in southern Borno, including Chibok and Gwoza.

For years, the route remained closed to civilian traffic due to persistent terrorist threats. However, under the administration of Governor Babagana Zulum, the road was reopened, with military escorts deployed to accompany travelers twice weekly after clearing the area for explosives.

Saturday’s attack raises fresh concerns about the safety of the corridor, despite consistent military presence. The blast also comes just days after Governor Zulum publicly raised alarm over renewed Boko Haram activity in the state, highlighting the persistent threat the group poses to peace and development in the region.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident, while investigations and security operations in the area continue.

In his opening remarks, the governor commended the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies for their unwavering support in the fight against Boko Haram.

He noted that more efforts have to be put in place through equipping and deploying of technological warfare to the military to stem the tide of all renewed attacks bedevilling parts of the Sahelian Borno which shares an international border with three African countries of Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

“As I address this important gathering today, it is unfortunate that the renewed Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings in many communities almost on a daily basis without confrontation signalled that Borno State is losing ground,” he stated.

“As you are all aware my administration has been very supportive of the military and other security agencies in the fight against Boko Haram and other terrorists leading to relative peace in the last three years, it is disheartening to note the recent attacks and dislodgement of military formations in Wajirko, Sabon Gari in Damboa local government, Wulgo in Gamboru Ngala, Izge in Gwoza local government areas among other related killing of innocent civilians and security agencies calls for serious concern, and it is a set back in the fragile state of Borno and the North East region.

Also contributing on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Shehu of Borno, hailed security agencies in the fight against terrorism, but emphasized that about three local government areas of Guzamala, Marte, Abbadam and some parts of Mobbar are still under the total control of Boko Haram, stressing that, most of these communities are without civil authority.

He also called on the Federal Government to reconstruct the dilapidated and deplorable Biu-Damboa-Maiduguri, Maiduguri-Dikwa-Ngala, Maiduguri-Monguno-Kukawa, and Biu-Damaturu federal roads, among others.

At the time of filing this report, the security meeting is still ongoing.

  • Why it’s difficult to end Boko Haram – CDS Musa gives reasons

Why it’s difficult to end Boko Haram – CDS Musa gives reasons

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has explained why the fight against the Boko Haram terrorist groups has lasted for 16 years.

The group began sophisticated attacks, initially against soft targets, but progressed in 2011 to include suicide bombings of police buildings and the United Nations office in Abuja.

The government’s establishment of a state of emergency at the beginning of 2012, extended in the following year to cover the entire northeast of Nigeria.

Apart from the killing of tens of thousands of innocent citizens in the region, about 2.3 million people have been displaced by the conflict since May 2013.

The Chief of Defence Staff highlighted issues that might have led to the military’s prolonged battle with the insurgents.

“This Boko Haram thing is a lot. Then I tell you this, for them to have survived for 16 years and are still fighting, how are they getting their funding? Who’s sustaining them? Because they cannot just be doing it actively just like that.

What I tell people is- no country should allow this kind of thing to commence. It is a difficult operation to eradicate, extremely difficult.

“Because before now, when we had the conventional kind of warfare, you are fighting a country. You know you’re fighting for territory. You want to achieve something.

Now you are fighting with people that have nothing to lose. It is an ideology they have in their minds. They believe they are right and you are wrong. He believes if he kills you, he’s getting a blessing. If you kill him, he’s going to heaven. That’s absolutely nothing to lose.
