  • Why Boko Haram insurgents are surrendering – Official

Why Boko Haram insurgents are surrendering – Official

Retired Brig.-Gen. Abdullahi Ishaq, the Special Adviser to Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno on Security, has attributed the mass surrendering of Boko Haram insurgents to the State Government’s offer to receive and rehabilitate them.

Ishaq said this in a presentation titled “The Impact of Borno Model in the Fight against Terrorists in Borno”, at a public lecture organised by University of Maiduguri on Wednesday in Maiduguri.

“I want to say without fear of contradiction that apart the fact that the insurgents have been degraded by the military, the window opened by the Zulum administration for them to surrender and the political will exhibited by the government has made many of them to surrender,” he said.

“The first batch of 35 insurgents who surrendered and received good treatments, encouraged others to also surrender, because of the reception given them.
” This included the governor’s visit to talk to them and this encouraged more others to surrender.

“That week I received over 1,500 of them who came out from the bush,” Ishaq said.

He added that the resolve by the people to accept those who surrendered back into the society also facilitated their surrendering.

“They are happy to hear that the people of Borno are ready to forgive them,” he said.

Ishaq said that the death of former leader of the group, Malam Abubakar Shekau and the supremacy fighting between the Boko Haram and the ISWAP group also created a wide division as many insurgents abandoned the fight saying it was no longer about ideology.

“Shekau’s death coupled with the fact that most of the die hard Boko Haram members have been killed in combats with military and the inhouse fighting made many mostly those conscripted to abandoned the fight.

“Most of conservative or die hard members of Boko Haram died of military action or in house fighting; over 90 per cent of them are dead.

“Hence, many of those conscripted started coming out,” Ishaq said.

He lauded the military for working in synergy with security agencies in the fight against the insurgents .

Over 100,000 Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters and their families have so far surrendered to troops in the state under the,“ Borno Model.

Gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly attacked an office of the Nigeria Customs Service in a town in  Geidam LGA, Yobe State, killing one operative, Usman Gombe.

It was gathered that the insurgents stormed the Customs office along Maine Soroa Road in a Volkswagen Golf and a Land Rover around 10:00 pm on Saturday and started shooting.

“They struck when they were sure the Customs officers had retired home. Panicked by the rain of bullets, the officers scampered for safety; some escaped through the gate, while others scaled the fence.

“Unfortunately, one of the officers, Usman Gombe, was shot dead while attempting to climb the fence,” a security source told newsmen.

According to him,  the assailants also burnt down the Customs patrol van, a generator, and part of the office building.

“This is the second time the Boko Haram insurgents are killing Customs officers. Last month, an officer, Babalola, and his junior officer were abducted and later killed by the insurgents,” the source said.

Residents of the town disclosed that the activities of Boko Haram insurgents on the outskirts of Geidam had increased in recent times.

“They collect taxes from farmers and herdsmen a few kilometres from the town, and nobody is doing anything.

“Instead, the security operatives have relocated over 17 checkpoints into the town where they also taxed traders that brought goods through the same route. We are in difficult condition in this town,” one of the traders alleged.

He reiterated the commitment of his administration to continue to provide the needed support to the military for maximum success in its assignment of restoring peace in Borno.

Earlier, Gen. Musa said he was in Borno to boost troops’ morale and to thank the government and people of Borno for their support.

Buhari’s legacies would be remembered positively– Ghana President

President Nana Akufo-Addo, of Ghana has praised President Muhammadu Buhari, for  Combating Boko haram in his administration.

President Akufo-Addo while speaking during a public launch of two biographies about Buhari’s life on Friday, disclosed that history would remember the outgoing Nigerian president kindly.

The event, which featured the unveiling of the books titled “State of Repair: How Muhammadu Buhari Tried to Change Nigeria for Good” by Antony Goldman and “The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari” by Senator Abu Ibrahim, was attended by dignitaries and raised over N500 million.

He commended Buhari’s contributions to diversifying the Nigerian agriculture, revitalizing the economy, and ensuring significant growth rates.

The Ghanaian president highlighted Buhar’s role as chairman of the Authority of Heads of States and Government of ECOWAS, the Gulf of Guinea Commission and his coordination of the fight against COVID-19 in ECOWAS.

He expressed belief that Buhari’s legacies would be remembered positively.

He also expressed admiration for Buhari and his leadership, stating that Nigeria, West Africa, Africa and the world would miss his thoughtful decision-making and dedication to Nigerian and African interests.

“Likewise, through the launch of today’s biographies, the story of President Muhammadu Buhari, a man who made such a great effort to change Nigeria for good, is being told by those who have had the opportunity to see for themselves at firsthand, from the beginning of his mandate as a democratically elected president, to his last days in office, the highs and lows of his tenure thus far. From what I have read and know, the life of Muhammadu Buhari has been truly an amazing story.

“The works the President Buhari has done in helping to diversify Nigerian agriculture and thereby enhancing significantly agricultural productivity, reviving the economy and ensuring consistently fast rates of growth. These developments, for me, have vindicated the choice of Nigerians, which I believe enabled continuity in office for the APC, through President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
